the hardware, the cow and more

I revealed my painted cabinets in my post yesterday and here is what it looks like with the new hardware. It is so true that hardware is the jewelry in a kitchen.  It’s like a simple dress that’s brought to life with the right necklace.  The bronze hardware really pops against the white and gives the kitchen a more farmhouse sort of look.  I just love it!

I’ll share all of my sources, colors, products, etc. in a future post.  Since I didn’t get to upload the pictures yesterday, I wanted to give a preview of my family room.  I’ll do a full “before and after” post once I get the curtains and some other things finished, but that is going to take me a few weeks and I don’t want to leave you hanging.
A few readers with a keen eye noticed my cow painting hiding behind the pot rack.
Here’s the full view.  Isn’t it wonderful?  It’s so soft and a little whimsical.  It was painted by the lovely and talented Laura Dreyer.  She’s looking for some clients, so contact her through her website if you’re interested in having her paint something for you.  I’m also going to start carrying some of her paintings in my space at Lucketts.  Check out her recent work on her blog and she also has a few original sketches and a beautiful print for sale in her Etsy Shop

To the left of the kitchen cabinets, I hung an antique tobacco basket above a yard sale bench.  The bench provides additional seating when we have a house full of teenagers (my husband is a youth pastor) and it hides the baseboard heaters a bit.  The paint was a little chippy, so I hosed off the loose paint and then sealed it with a coat of wax.  Now it’s baby smooth.

My tea towel pillow has found a nice home on one of my slip covered wing chairs and a vintage wool US Navy blanket is slung over the back.

More to come!

  2. Oh, Marian. Like so much of your house, your kitchen is magazine-worthy! What a wonderful job you did. You should be really, really proud. I'm proud for you!

  3. Love the new hardware. I had my hands on a tobacco basket last summer but didnt scoop it up fast enough. I hope to get one before we move from NC. I LOVE that navy blanket with your pillow.

  4. love it! you move faster than anybody i know! do you sleep? 🙂 i love the white cabinets – used to have a white kitchen, now i have chocolate maple beadboard cabs and very similar knobs that you have. i also have an antique tobaco basket – mine hangs over my fireplace and i hung mine the other way – i might turn it around now! thanks for sharing wonder woman!

  5. oh my word…i want to move in…can you tell me about your counter tops? they look like concrete or soapstone. whatever they are i like 'em!

  6. In all the honesty I can muster without, (i hope) sounding rude… evidently your kitchen has never made a lasting impression on me, or you've kept it hidden?
Guess what! It's my *new favorite kitchen.
    Oh yes. it is!
I keep coming back to see it again and again…

  7. Kitchen looks great and the cow! The colors are lovely! Your farmhouse kitchen is CRYING, SCREAMING, HOLLERIN' out for a beadboard backsplash!!! Would be easy (for talented and handy you) I think!!

  8. Love it all. You were so lucky you didn't have exposed hinges to deal with. What a pain! The beadboard doors are so much more prominent in white than the stained look. My first love is fabric and sewing so I am waiting patiently to see the curtains. :o)

  9. absolutely amazing! I didnt think it could get any better when i saw the other post- but the hardware MAKES the cabinets! fabulous!

  10. Had you revealed only after the hardware, I would not have appreciated what an amazing difference they make. Beautiful!!!

  11. Very nice. I painted my kitchen white years ago and two years ago went with the black hardware. This year I painted the centre of my cupboards black to match the blackboard inserts I put in a set of hanging cupboards. You cannot go wrong with white, it goes with everything. Gorgeous job!

  12. I was a unsure about your cabinets but with that hardware, I LOVE them…what a difference!! Makes me feel a little better, too, b/c I'm in the end stages of painting mine, and I'm not sure about them…using Old white chalk paint with Paris Gray wash over them. I think I may like them when it's all done. But I totally understand why you didn't want to wax all your cabinets!!! YIKES!!

  13. Your kitchen looks amazing, wow what a difference. I cant wait to do mine and seeing yours has really inspired me. I wish I had a bigger kitchen but on the other hand I dont relish the idea of painting 50+ DOORS WHEW. I love the cow painting it's so soft and pretty.

  14. You just nudged me one step closer to painting my ugly, orange, cheap, much hated, builder grade cabinets white. I just wish I had your youth and energy to do it. Your kitchen looks absolutely amazing!

  15. Simply beautiful, Marian! Love all the white in your kitchen with the dark knobs! Delicious! And your sweet pillow and your bench….? Awesome! You are soooo inspiring, girl!

  16. the hardware is the perfect finishing touch on the cabinets. Can't wait to see more of your family room….

  17. The kitchen looks amazing and that hardware is beautiful, just finishes everything off so perfectly. LOVE that cow painting! It looks like a dream. So pretty; Laura is a wonderful artist!

    Best,

  18. wow, you have been busy. So glad to see you doing something for your home. You paint lovely pieces and make great slips and pillows and you are usually selling them. So, it's nice to see your space coming together for you to enjoy.

  19. Whew, that was worth all the effort! The jewelry is lovely on your cabinets, perfect finishing touch. I smile when I look at the pictures and all your accessories on the counters. It reminds me of the post you did about editing your counters, and how you have a habit of having a lot of stuff on your counters. I just wonder…what else did you have on your counters before? I am totally a counter clutter free type of gal, but your stuff is so unique I can see why you want to display it. Great job Marian, your hard work will be enjoyed for years to come..

  20. Great job on those cabinets. Thanks for the how-to video. You make it look so easy, but I know it's not. My jaw dropped when you said you had 51 doors to paint. Ouch! Can't wait to see the living room.

  21. First , let me say your kitchen looks amazing! You are very lucky to have a husband who goes along with your ideas!
I was wondering what type of paint finish you used on the cabinets – gloss, semi-gloss, eggshell? I've used semi-gloss on furniture and it seems to always be sticky, especially in hot or damp weather. (Which is why I will use chalk paint for furniture from now on). I'm curious about the cabinets. My brother wants to paint his kitchen cabinets and asked me what is the best one to use.

  22. Seriously amazing! I bet every morning when you wake up & go in there you cant wipe the grin off your face!! That kitchen SINGS! my dear!! and Im a without a doubt sure we will see it one day featured in BH&G; or Cottage & Bungalows!! (if they havent called you already)
I love such beautiful before & afters like this!

  23. Finally, the full cow – I love it! Very soft and dreamy and the color is perfect in that room. This whole post looks awesome. Can't believe the difference it made to paint your cabinets. Well worth the work! -Nan

  24. Marian,
This post about your kitchen re-do via paint and hardware is probably the most inspirational post I've seen in awhile. What an amazing transformation. If anyone wasn't sure about painting cupboards that are just so-so should definitely see the transformation. Wonderful! Its so beautiful.

  25. Your kitchen looks SO beautiful!!! I also have maple cabinets that I want to paint white…my husband is not on board. 🙂

I was wondering what made you decide to use oil based paint as opposed to the proclassic and what made you do them by hand since you have a sprayer? Did you paint the inside of your cabinets too?

You did such a great job! It's TONS of work

  26. Loveing the kitchen. The pot rack is just perfect. I have a small one and love mine. It is fun to decorate for Christmas also. Kathy

  27. Love the hardware and cabinets. Not sure what "I" think of the wall color, but that's me, I like more color, even if it is pastel. Guess I'm the only one ever to say that! :O

    Norma

  28. Love, love, love your kitchen! I like how you've paired it with vintage items. Makes it so homely and beautiful! You're such an inspiration!

  29. You're so right- the kitchen looked beautiful before when you posted without the hardware, but the hardware really does make it pop!

I live in Loudoun county, VA and just found out that Lucketts isn't too far away. I may have to make my way up there while the kids are at the sitter tomorrow. 😉

  30. It looks so warm and inviting in there! I am sure any teenager that came into that room would feel comfortable and relaxed, just by being in such a calming space. Also, your pots look amazing! Ick, I am cringing at the look of my pots on my pot rack. They are so in need of a shine…..

  31. I have looked @ each photo at least a million times. Words can't explain my luv for your new look in your home. Super amazing. Love it all.

  32. The cabinets are beautiful…as is your kitchen! Very bright & cozy seeming…plus I love your green counter tops! I was going to go the way of white with my kitchen cabinets but the green ended up being even more perfect choice for my kitchen in particular. Yours looks wonderful 🙂

  33. Wow! It's awesome! I just returned from visiting my daughter and seeing the inside of her new home for the first time. Her cabs are white with the antique bronze hardware and it's true, it just pops. In fact all of the hardware in her home is the antique bronze against the painted white woodwork and it was a awesome visual to look down her long hallway (with tons of doors) and see the clean lines and contrast.

    Love your kitchen!

  34. I do love that hardware! We are going to {finally!} paint our cabinets soon. I always wanted white cabinets and that's what we'll do, but unless we change the doors, there will be no hardware since these are the kind that don't need knobs. 🙁

  35. New to all the bloging, etc. Saw your white cabinets with the black hardware. Im in the mist of redoing my cabinets with the bead board, etc. i have to know where did you get the hardware!? Please share. Looking for that style and with the new floors it would just put the finishing touch.

    Thank you
