Interiors of a Storyteller

I feature books I’m reading each week in my Four Things series, but every once in a while, I come across a book that needs its own blog post.  Such is the case with Interiors of a Storyteller by Stephanie Sabbe.  The official book release is tomorrow, but my friends at Gibbs Smith, who know my love of their decorating and design books, sent me an advanced copy.  (You can purchase it HERE on Amazon.)  I have followed Stephanie on her Instagram page @sabbeinteriordesign, but I didn’t put two-and-two together that this was her book until I started flipping through it and the style felt familiar. Stephanie’s decorating style is right up my alley.  It’s classic and sophisticated yet each room feels like a real, lived-in space.  It’s beautiful while not being overly starched and fussy.  None of the rooms feel like they should be roped off or just had

Taschen Book Sale

One of my favorite publishers/booksellers, Taschen Books is having a huge sale, so even though I typically don’t post on the weekends, I thought I would share some of the titles in my own library that are on sale.  Their books are always a feast for the eyes with gorgeous photography, and high-quality paper, and many of their books are enormous coffee-table style books that I love pouring over.  They also have a huge selection of books on art and design.  Most of these books are 50% off, so it’s a pretty sweet sale for my fellow book-lovers…  (Just a warning before you go browsing – Taschen carries “adult books” as well and not all of the covers are censored.  I search specific categories to try to avoid those titles.) I bought The World’s Most Beautiful Libraries at Costco a few years ago and it is a little slice of

what’s in my gardening books stack

I’m a book-stacker.  When I am interesting in a subject, I’ll pull books on that topic and make a stack on my studio counter.  If I feel like there are holes in my collection or some tempting new books are available, I’ll buy a few more to add to the stack.  I’ll then grab books from that stack to read when I have some free time or when I’m headed to an appointment or another place where I might be waiting.  The current stack on my studio counter follows a clear theme – gardening.  It’s full of some of my favorite gardening books that I’ve had for years along with some that I just opened a few days ago. If you know me, you know I like big books.  Helping me move isn’t fun because not only do I have lots of boxes of books, but I have lots of

art books | new releases in 2024

Well, now that I have more shelf space in the studio, I can buy more books!  I say that partially in jest, but my book-loving mind does think that way to an extent.  There is a practical, organized side of me, though, that understands limits are good and things are only valuable if I can interact with them meaningfully.  They have to be accessible and useful to be enjoyed, so keeping that in mind, there will always be some limits.  That being said, I really, really love and use my art books.  I visit and revisit them regularly, so I feel like I can justify making more room for more books without feeling guilty. I have learned, though, that I need to be intentional about the books I curate, so I’ve gotten in the habit of maintaining a pretty meticulous art books wish list.  When I see a book I’m

my recent favorite art books

Earlier this year, I tried to paint a few landscapes and they all ended up being wiped off the panel.  I felt like I had completely forgotten how to paint a landscape, which was strange because that’s where I started.  I think it had more to do with the fact that I was growing in other areas artistically.  The light in this house had pushed me in a new direction with my still-life paintings and I could see how much I was improving.  When I switched over to paint a landscape, it would feel flat and forced and I wasn’t happy with the results. So, I dove into studying and practicing.  I’ve been reading books, observing nature through photos and sketching, and I’m taking a few new art classes focusing on the landscape, trees, and skies.  (I took or am taking online classes from Erin Spencer, Julie Davis, and Scot

best art book series | for beginners

You may have noticed that I like my books.  Art books, specifically, are my favorite with design and decorating books as a very close second.  I have amassed quite a collection over the past few years and I have most of the books in my library listed in my Amazon store HERE.  With 357 books on the list, though, I know it can be overwhelming to find the book recommendation you’re looking for.  Since I’m asked with some regularity, I thought I would do a few posts with my top books from specific categories.  Today, I’m sharing the top ten books from my collection that I picked for beginners. This was really hard to narrow down because the book that is best for you depends on your interests, what mediums you want to study, which subjects you want to draw or paint, how you learn, and your starting point.  So,

books from friends

One of my favorite things about the online world is that we have the chance to meet and connect with people we would never meet otherwise.  I have gotten to know people who love the things I love and even those who write about the things I love.  There are certainly many things I can and have bemoaned about social media, but I do love this aspect of it.  As a result of some of these connections, I’m occasionally sent something a fellow creative and author has put out in the world.  Over the summer and into the fall, I received a bunch!  Some were temporarily lost in the shuffle of the move and some were mailed to temporary addresses until we were settled or sat on top of a pile of boxes until I could get things opened and organized.  While I haven’t had time to thoroughly read each

the reader’s corner | used books

When we arrived in Raleigh last week, my mother-in-law started going over potential outings.  She shared the names of a few thrift stores she thought I might want to check out and she mentioned that my niece, Lizzy, could give me a comprehensive tour of the best-used book shops in the area.  Well, I perked up at that!  Lizzy and I have always had a lot of interests in common from theatre to crochet.  Now, we share a love of poking around used book stores to build our personal libraries.  We chatted about what kind of books I look for (art, design, decorating) and she knew just the spot to take me – The Reader’s Corner. I was actually so distracted at the thought of all of those used books that I forgot to bring my cell phone with me, so I couldn’t take pictures!  The one above was sourced
