Painted Signs

hand painted bread sign

Let me start off by saying this was supposed to be a tutorial, but it won’t be.  The reason is that I mindlessly deleted all of the process photos!!  Ah!  I try to keep my camera card “uncluttered”, so I delete all files once they are uploaded.  Well, I got a little overenthusiastic in my decluttering and deleted these files before I put them on my computer.  Not only did I delete these pictures, but also pictures for a freelance tutorial.  I redid those because I had to, but this will just be the tutorial that wasn’t meant to be. Anyway, I’ve been looking for something to hang over my range, but I just haven’t come across anything that is just right.  I even did some thorough shopping of my house and tried a few different platters, trays, breadboards, etc.  I would hang one and leave it for a day

Making an “Antique” Sign

 I must apologize!  I posted a teaser about this sign I made for Cottages & Bungalows and said I would post the tutorial after the issue was off newsstands.  Well…that was in August, so I think it’s safe to say that those issues have been pulled.  So, at long last, here it is… What you’ll need: 12” wide pine board cut to desired length Acrylic craft paint (at least three colors) 2 ½” sash brush 1” artist brush, 1.0 liner brush, ½” angled shader Computer Printer and printer paper Scissors Tape Graphite transfer paper Ballpoint pen 80 grit sand paper Dark brown soft furniture wax Round brush or cotton cloth Clean cotton cloth Drill with driver bits Tape measure or ruler 2 D-ring hangers Hammer and nails   How to do it: Cut a piece of 12” wide pine board to desired length or use a piece of scrap lumber.

Antique Sign Tutorial

If you’re looking for the full tutorial on making an antique sign, you can find it HERE. I can hardly believe that I have been writing for Cottages & Bungalows magazine for over a year! Wow.  It’s been a real honor to write their DIY Essentials column to share everything from how to make no sew drapes to building a simple bird house to building a shelf.  In the issue currently on newsstands, I show how to make an “antique” sign using graphite transfer paper.  I love any project using paint and this photo shoot was one of my favorites… If you want to see the tutorial, check out the magazine.  I’ll post it on my blog in a few weeks when the magazine is no long available.   I tell you, you never know what is going to happen when you start a blog.   I never, ever, EVER thought

My House

{my turn}

I’ve been working like crazy getting ready for the holiday open house and working on other projects, so my home has been a bit of a wreck.  Now it’s time to focus some attention on things I get to keep and things that will make my home more enjoyable for me and my family.  (Well, mostly me.  My boys don’t care about curtains and pillows and painted furniture and accessories.)  I don’t have a huge window to do this, but I’m going to take a few days and get some things done around here.  I already started by moving an old ceder chest into my living room.  I already painted it, of course, but I snapped this picture before I did.  I’m not sure if I LOVE it there, yet, but it’s giving me an idea for scale.  I’d like to find something really interesting, though.  I have an idea

The story of Annabel & Rupert

This is a story about love.  A man who loves a woman.  A woman who loves a blog.  A designer who loves to create.  I received an e-mail last week from a gentleman…let’s call him “Rupert.”  Rupert had a request.  His wife, let’s call her “Annabel”, loves my blog and he would love to surprise her with one of my hand painted signs for mother’s day.  Unfortunately, all of the signs he was interested in were sold.  It’s one of my busiest months, but I just couldn’t say no to creating a custom sign just for them. He wanted something French, related to ice cream or candy.  I found a vintage French chocolate label on The Graphics Fairy and designed a sign around it.  Rupert wanted a graphic, so I used the crown image from the label. …and he wanted blue and white, so I used Annie Sloan’s Aubusson with Old White

market sign & my pavilion

I finished this sign the morning I brought it to Lucketts, so we didn’t have a chance to do a proper photo shoot together.  Sorry!  I really love how this one turned out, though.  The bead board door was already painted a cream color, so I simply painted over it with Antibes Green with lettering in Old White and shadow in Graphite (all chalk paint.)  Once dry, I used a palm sander to use and abuse the sign until it looked how I wanted it to.  The piece was finished with a mix of clear and brown wax.  Check out my Waxes 101 video if you’d like to see my technique.   I just bought some huge barn doors today to paint some signs on.  They sell well and it’s fun to create my own “art” to sell in my space.   Some of you were a little confused about the “pavilion” idea, so I

Lion Coffee Sign

I thought I would share my latest hand painted sign with you today.  It’s a big one…about five feet long! I used an antique Christmas coffee ad I found at The Graphics Fairy.  I cropped the text and put it in my projector to transfer it to my board.  I found this awesome door at an antique store a few weeks ago.  It was painted in the prettiest chalky blue and had really cool hinges.  Honestly, I’ve been hoarding it for myself, but it’s just been sitting in my office and I needed things to take to Lucketts, so I had to let it go.  Donna, I know you’re suffering from rust envy.  Just go snuggle with one of your bolts and you’ll be okay.  Oh…it looked so perfect in my house.  Sigh.  Can’t keep ’em all.  If you’re interested in making an “old” sign of your own, check out

Apiary & Fresh Butter

In the frenzy of getting things ready to take to my retail spaces, I turned my attention to two neglected pieces of wood in the corner of my office.  They belonged to a drop leaf table that had seen better days.  For the first one, I pulled some inspiration from The Graphics Fairy, where I found this beautiful bee graphic. I’ve been thinking about making an Apiary sign for a while, so I enjoyed finally putting brush to board on this one. This one is going to the Old Lucketts Store to sell.  The second sign was inspired by what I’ve been eating far too much of lately… …and now I have to start Weight Watchers online and working with my “personal trainer” on the Kinect.  You’d think I’d lose weight with all of the work I do, but when you replace running on the treadmill with blogging…well…enough said.  Anyway, I
