Kim’s Coastal Bedroom Twin | room makeover

Every once in a while, I get to see how something I share on my blog inspires someone else.  Most of the time, it’s just me at my laptop, pressing publish and receiving a handful of comments as feedback.  Over a year ago, though, I received an e-mail from one of my blog readers, Barbara, who was so in love with my design for my parents’ bedroom that she decided to replicate it in her own home.  She reached out a few times to ask questions and get clarification on sources or measurements for the built-ins my dad and I built, and then, a few months ago, she sent the final result. As a reminder, here are a few photos of my parents’ room makeover… As a reminder, here is what my parents’ bedroom looks like.  You can find links to all of the posts about this room makeover here…

proper heights for wainscoting

I don’t usually care for “decorating rules.”  They are typically preferences and gimmicks more than actual rules.  “Blue and green should never be seen.” is one rule that I threw in the garbage bin pretty quickly when I started decorating.  I want to ask the person who came up with that adage if they ever stepped outside with their eyes open.  The dominant colors in nature are undeniably blue and green, and it’s one of the most harmonious and beautiful combinations.  Now that I’ve poo-pooed decorating rules, I will say that there are design principles that seem to be universal across all art forms.  One of those principles is the rule of thirds.  Trios are more aesthetically pleasing than duos when arranging a vignette.  A photo or painting composition is stronger when the focal point or horizon line is placed following the rule of thirds.  Eye makeup looks better if

dining room options & taking creative risks

Last week, I shared that I was contemplating the fate of the hand-painted dining room mural and unintentionally posted it on April 1, so a few readers thought it might be a joke!  It might seem a little nutty, but it wasn’t a joke.  It’s not unusual for me to look at something I painted and decide I don’t like it.  I’ve thrown paintings away, repainted or stripped pieces of furniture, and goodness knows I’ve painted rooms repeatedly over the years.  I used to joke with Jeff that we were losing square footage in our PA house because I repainted the walls so many times.  While the dining room mural was a much bigger time investment than just rolling paint on, I’m still able to look at it the same as if I picked a paint color that isn’t playing with the light as well as I’d hoped.  I can

the fate of the dining room mural

Sooooo… remember the dining room mural? The one that I designed, hand-painted, and spent hours and hours on?  Well, I’m rethinking it.  Let me explain… First, let me say that I do love how it turned out.  I love the colors and style of the mural, and even though there are some areas I want to work on, I’m happy with the overall design and look.  I decided to call it “finished for now” as we went into the holidays, so I could step away and think about what I wanted to do next.  I knew I wanted to work a bit more on the distant trees and the foreground, and I was considering adding a glaze over the entire mural to mute the effect. Once I had some distance from all the work I put into it, I was able to get a fresh perspective.  There are things about

dining room mural | for now

We’re back home from visiting family for Thanksgiving.  We unpacked and put up the Christmas tree the day we got home so we had lots of time to enjoy the lights and ambience through the season.  I also set up a tree in the dining room, which is exciting to see against the backdrop of the mural.  This week, I’ll be working on more Christmas decorating, but before we get into that, I wanted to share what the mural looks like for now.  I still don’t consider it finished because I want to add or adjust a few things, and I’m still strongly considering applying an antiquing glaze to mute the colors and soften the overall look.  I even received the glaze just before we left for our trip, but I decided I would get through Christmas and then decide. So, here is how it looks for now… I love

dining room makeover | the new velvet curtains

Last week, I made a final push to get the dining room mural to a place I could call it “done for now” and put the room back together.  The best part was hanging up the new curtains custom-made for the room by Neutral Curtains.  (As a disclosure, I partnered with Neutral Curtains for an Instagram post and received these curtains as a part of that partnership.  This blog post is not a part of my obligation, though.  I wanted to share here because the curtains are gorgeous and my experience with them was excellent.) The first thing I love about Neutral Curtains is you can order an entire sample book for $1.00, which includes free shipping.  That’s not $1.00 for one swatch.  It’s for an entire book.  I ordered all the books so I could feel the fabric options and see the colors in my own space. And my

dining room landscape mural | diving in

I had the palette selected for the dining room mural.  I’ve painted murals before including a landscape mural in my previous dining room.  I had inspiration pictures, sketches, and a vision.  Now that the ceiling has a fresh coat, and the wainscoting is installed, primed, and painted, nothing is preventing me from starting the mural except me and I have honestly been a bit of an impediment.  This might be counter to what you’d expect from someone who has painted a lot of things, but I’m not going into this project with a massive amount of confidence.  I’m going into it knowing that if it doesn’t work out, it’s okay.  I can put a coat of primer over it and go in a new direction. But, I want to do this mural, so I need to start.  Aside from dragging my own feet, two things were holding me up.  One

basement floor progress | 1970 home renovation

A part of me felt like sharing the process of this basement makeover here on the blog wouldn’t be very fulfilling.  With other rooms in the house, there is going to be a transformation with well-lit photos at the end of the journey.  With zero natural light in this space, a drop ceiling, and cold fluorescent lighting, this makeover isn’t going to end in an Instagram-worthy photo shoot.  But, I know that many people who live in older homes in the US states where basements are the norm are dealing with a similar situation.  Basements in the 1970s and 80s were typically unfinished or, if they were finished, they were places for the Christmas decorations, the washer, dryer, and chest freezer, ping-pong tables, workout equipment, a playroom for the kids, and a hangout for the teenagers.  I remember rollerskating in my friend’s basement in the early 1990s because it was
