Laundry Room

tidying up the laundry room

Before we left on our trip, we’ve been working on tidying up the house and taking care of things that have been overlooked for a while.  The laundry room was one of those areas that just needed a little tidying up.  I like open shelves for their display value, but they can get a little messy as you use things and put them back.  As I did with the living room shelves and kitchen counters, I also just wanted to clean and simplify the stuff on the shelves.  As I’ve shared recently, there is always tension within me between wanting to be neat and wanting to display all of my favorite things.  I tend to add more, then pull back, then add more back in again, and the cycle continues. Jason Gray has a song titled Order Disorder Reorder Over & Over and that’s a pretty good description of my

finally, a faucet that listens…

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by .  As always all words and opinions are honest and my own. You never realize how much you’re at your kitchen sink until you set up a camera to capture your activities.  (Or when you’re doing a kitchen renovation and don’t have a sink!)  In just making breakfast for everyone, filling up the water bowl for Sebastian and the kitties, wiping down the counters, washing the dishes, watering some plants, I visited the sink again and again.  The kitchen is the heart of the home and the kitchen sink and faucet are definitely important fixtures. We recently upgraded our faucet to the .  I must admit that I didn’t really know how high tech faucets could get until we installed and started using this one.  It addresses so many issues with ordinary faucets like figuring out the best way to turn them on when your

Tidying the Laundry Room & Bottling Cleaners

A few weeks ago, I was in a cleaning and organizing mood.  I am the sort of person who’s in that kind of mood pretty regularly, but this was on another level.  It started with getting all of my cleaning supplies sorted out and turned into reorganizing the laundry room shelves.  I keep cleaners, sponges, brushes, etc. all over the house, so that cleaning is easy.  Under the sink of each bathroom is a bottle of glass cleaner, toilet cleaner, a toilet brush, sponges, a couple of rolls of paper towels, all-purpose cleaners, scouring powder or paste, paper towels, a few clean microfiber dust cloths, and a small box of garbage bags.  (I share some of my favorite cleaners in THIS POST.)  In the master bathroom, I also have dishwasher tabs and a big bottle of white vinegar for cleaning the jet tub.  In a three-story house, this means I

In case you missed any of the other posts in the Laundry Room Makeover Series, you can catch up here… Part One – Inspiration & Bead Board Installation Part Two – The Reveal Part Three – Tools & Tips In this post, I’ll share sources for everything (well, as much as I can source) and will also talk through the functionality of this space. I must say that organizing the shelves was my favorite part of the makeover.  I love it when things that are useful and hard-working can also look pretty and be out in the open.  It really doesn’t have to be form OR function.  It can be both. So, let’s talk about the shelf over the sink first, since that’s where I put the things I use most.  Because the washer and dryer are so tall, it’s a little hard to reach the cabinets over them without

Laundry Room Makeover | Part 3 | Tools & Tips

In part one, you saw the inspiration and progress for the laundry room makeover.  In part two, you saw the reveal.  Now, it’s time to get into the nitty gritty details of the tools and products I used. First of all, the kind of bead board I used was a thin, tongue and groove plank bead board from Home Depot.  It’s double-beaded, solid wood bead board by Pine Ridge.  I wasn’t able to find it on the Home Depot website, but I found it in the wood paneling section.  It comes in 8′ lengths and a shorter length for chair-rail height installation. As you can see, it has grooves on the back, which makes it easier to do “rip cuts” (cuts lengthwise), when needed.  Because it’s thin, I found it easy to work with (cut, fit around light switches, etc.) and I was able to sit it right on top

Laundry Room Makeover | Part 2 | The Reveal

Okay, well, it’s almost the laundry room reveal.  This is how it looks after all of the big stuff is done.  I am waiting for the new schoolhouse-style light fixture and I still need to paint the trim on all of the doors, but those are just small finishing details and I don’t want to wait another week to show you the finished space! Someone on Instagram asked why I was spending so much time and energy on a room no one sees.  Well, I see it!  That’s why I like my bedroom closet organized and the drawers in my studio tidy.  I’m the only one who sees those spaces, but it matters to me that they are organized and look nice.  Aside from that, more people do see this laundry room, since it’s right off our kitchen and it’s the entrance from the garage.  People are coming and going through
