tidying up the laundry room

Before we left on our trip, we’ve been working on tidying up the house and taking care of things that have been overlooked for a while.  The laundry room was one of those areas that just needed a little tidying up.  I like open shelves for their display value, but they can get a little messy as you use things and put them back.  As I did with the living room shelves and kitchen counters, I also just wanted to clean and simplify the stuff on the shelves.  As I’ve shared recently, there is always tension within me between wanting to be neat and wanting to display all of my favorite things.  I tend to add more, then pull back, then add more back in again, and the cycle continues.

Jason Gray has a song titled Order Disorder Reorder Over & Over and that’s a pretty good description of my styling.

So, here is how the shelves are looking in the laundry room after a little tidying up.  (I was doing laundry.  Hence the lights.)

I removed some things from the top of the cabinets and simplified the other shelves.  The styling still fills the space, but it’s not quite as full.  I also removed the scissors and brushes hanging from the wire rack over the sink, just so it can breathe visually for a while.

This laundry room has come a long way with just beadboard and paint!  You can see the details of the laundry room makeover HERE.

I plan to do more cleaning and organizing when we get back.  It’s a task that can be hard to start, but it becomes like a snowball rolling down the hill.  It’s all about momentum…

  1. I love your laundry room. So stylish for a ulitarian room. What is opposite the washer and dryer?

  2. Love the whole room! I am a detail person. The jute spool has caught my eye. Probably because I use jute often & it is always loose. You actually have so much “eye candy” to look at! Thank you for sharing.

  3. Hi. How has the paint job on the cabinets held up based on the supplies you used on the laminate? I want to do the same and I’d like to know. We sure don’t want alot of chipping to contend with. Would you suggest anything different based on your latest experiences?

    Thanks much!!!

  4. I like having my things out on display and I collect alot. There is a fine line for me between just right and too much. So when it gets to that too much stage, I edit. The metal shelf above the sink is so unusual and just right. I like the natural bristle brushes and the green color. I like the supports for the shelves. Oh, let’s face it, I love everything about your laundry room!

  5. I’ve always loved your laundry room. There is something about how you have made such a necessary and often ugly room in the house, into a thing of beauty. Looks like it would be fun to do laundry at your house.

  6. Hi Marion,
I just luv your laundry room. Especially with the green shelves and green painted cupboard below the sink. You style everything perfectly!
What is the color name and brand paint you used?

the new fridge

The day of the delivery was bittersweet.  After over a month of fetching milk, butter, cheese, eggs, leftovers, and such from the garage fridge, we were going to have a working refrigerator in our kitchen again.  That was the sweet part.  The bitter part was knowing  I would no longer
