antique purchases with mom

Most of you have my taste pretty nailed down!  When I asked which pieces you thought I bought while on my antique trip with mom, you were pretty spot on!  (You can read that post HERE.)  Truth be told, I wanted to buy everything I highlight, but I’ve hit that tipping point where I need to be very particular about what I buy.  Years of antiquing as a hobby and a business has my house pretty well furnished.  But, my kindred spirits get that it’s too fun to not mill around antique stores and markets now and then.  So, here is what I bought… Of course, the goose.  I love concrete pieces for the garden and this one was just too good to pass up, even with the repaired beak. The posture and patina are perfect.  My only hesitation was the break and strange repair (it’s like a putty or

antiquing with mom

After visiting the local art museum and grabbing lunch at a bistro, Mom and I went to one of my favorite antique stores.  Since purging ironstone and antiques earlier this year, I’ve been disciplined about not bringing a bunch of stuff back into the house.  I do love milling about in antique stores, second-hand shops, and markets, though, and I’m resigned to the fact that there will always be some amount of stuff coming and going.  It just needs to be intentional and in moderation!  So, I kept this in mind as we walked the aisles of Beaver Creek Antique Market. Right off the bat, my attention was grabbed by a concrete goose sitting on the counter.  Typically, pieces sitting on the counter were placed there by shoppers who intend to buy them.  The absence of a tag also made me think it was already claimed.  I asked about it

the fate of the open kitchen shelves

I’ve been looking for and considering an alternative to the inexpensive open shelves we added during our kitchen renovation.  We were at the end of the project and the budget, and I was also experiencing decision fatigue.  But I quickly realized I didn’t have a place to put my mixer or all of my ironstone collection, so I came up with an inexpensive solution – open shelves made out of stair treads and metal brackets, all painted the color of the wall.  It was budget-friendly, pretty easy to install, customizable, and would meet the immediate need.  I always thought they would eventually be replaced with something else, but I keep coming back to the same problem when I look at antique wall shelves or even when I consider building something – there is simply too much stuff. This is one of the realizations that urged me to start thinning my

the practice of letting go

Over the weekend, I started cleaning out my ironstone collection, pulling the pieces I felt ready to part with. As I was sharing pictures of the growing piles of stuff, I started getting messages essentially asking if everything was okay; if I was okay. Was there some big life event that was forcing this purge? Did I need some quick cash? Were we moving, or had I just received a worrisome diagnosis?  It made me smile that letting go of things, some of which have been synonymous with my aesthetic for over a decade, brought such concern.  I put those fears to rest and shared a link to the blog post I wrote about hitting my “stuff threshold” a couple of weeks ago.  (You can read that post HERE.)  This wasn’t brought on by any major life events but by a slow and subtle change within me that made me

the story of the ironstone milk pans

One of the vendors that’s been a favorite at the Lucketts Spring & Fall Markets each year has been Barn Fresh Designs.  They always have lovely pieces, an eye-catching display, and reasonable prices.  I’ve bought a few things from them over the last few markets and was excited to see them in a new space at the 2024 Fall Market.  I recognized their pieces right away and exclaimed, “You moved!”  I was pulling a couple of chunky gold frames off of a wall to purchase and Bob came over to hold them for me and say hello.  In addition to their new location, I was also surprised by the presence of a large ironstone milk pan I had passed up at the Spring Market.  So, let me tell you about the ironstone milk pans… I bought a nesting set of them from Barn Fresh Designs at the Spring 2023 market.

favorite things | antique transferware plates

I have loved antique transferware plates for years, decades even.  I think they were one of my earliest yard sale purchases as a newlywed.  I remember reading a magazine article that showcased stacks of mismatched antique transferware plates that had been collected over time and I fell in love with the idea of having a set of dishes that wasn’t a set at all.  I also subscribed to the idea early in my decorating journey that pretty plates and platters made unique and inexpensive wall art and I’ve been hanging them on the walls ever since. Even though I have well over 100 plates and platters (it’s probably closer to 200), I still am drawn to them and find new excuses to acquire them.  Well, these would be perfect for a still-life painting, so I can buy them to use as props.  If you’re a collector, you understand that some

antique ironstone breadbox

As I shared last week in THIS POST, I did a bit of antiquing and thrifting and found some great pieces.  The outings also reminded me why I can’t do this too often!  There is just so much good stuff out there and it can be hard to not bring it all home.  I did pretty well at staying focused, though, and I found an absolutely incredible piece that deserved its own blog post.  As I combed through the booths at a local antique shop for copper for my kitchen, I spotted a bread box that caused me to lean in and examine it closer.  At first, I thought it was wood and enamel and nothing too exciting, but there was something that I recognized in the luster of the white material and I was certain when I saw the crazing.  I removed the things on top of the box

ironstone cake stands | the holy grail of antique ironstone

Jeff and I were planning to work on the hall trim on his day off a couple of weeks ago, but the weather was rainy and cold and it was not the best day to set up a miter saw on the driveway.  On top of that, I was pretty tired from the long workday I had with my parents.  You can read about what we accomplished HERE.  So, I suggested we go out to breakfast and then hit some antique and used furniture stores to see if we could find a piece to use as a printer stand and for office supply storage.  Something for this spot… So we went to a couple of my favorite local spots and, when I rounded a corner, I spotted ironstone. I am at the place in my ironstone collection where I only buy pieces that are really special, but I still have
