Calvin’s Christmas Bedroom

I took some time a couple of weeks ago to put some finishing touches on Calvin’s room and, while I did that, I added a few Christmas decorations. I finally swapped out the brass curtain rod with this matte black single curtain rod from Birch Lane.  This one is pretty heavy duty just in case someone thinks it’s a good idea to hang on the drapes.  My boys generally don’t do that sort of thing, but it’s always in the realm of possibility. I didn’t swap out the rings out of laziness, to be quite honest, but I actually don’t hate the brass rings with the black rod as much as I thought I would.  Even though there is something unexpected and interesting about it to me, I will swap them out for black ones at some point. I hung some wool pom-poms from the curtain rod and headboard for a playful,

“Created by Dreamers”

A few months ago, I reviewed a mattress from Leesa.  It was a foam mattress that comes in a box, delivered to your door.  I’m a big fan of a foam mattress, but not everyone is, so Leesa figured out a way to get springs inside a mattress that can still be compressed, fit in a box, and delivered to your door. Their new luxury mattress is called Sapira. The box was sitting in the living room for a few days before I had the chance to get it out of the box.  It’s a little comical that Jeff no longer thinks anything of large boxes being delivered to our house.  He doesn’t even ask me what it is!  It’s just a part of what I do. So, this big, black box was sitting in the living room and I mentioned it one night at dinner. “Oh, that box in

DIY window valance

Good evening from New York!  I spent the better part of the day driving through the rolling hills and small towns of PA and NY and even got to stop in at an antique store and eat dinner at an amazing restaurant, so I can’t complain. Anyway, earlier this week I worked on a valance for the dormer window in Calvin’s room and I thought I would share how to make this simple window treatment… (I’m still figuring out the cord situation in this desk area, so don’t judge!) I started out by cutting a board the width I wanted the valance.  In my case, it was the width from one wall to the other, since it’s a dormer window.  I just used a scrap board, but a 1 x 2 would be perfect. I then cut a piece of fabric about 3″ longer than the height of the window

Furniture for the Family Room & Calvin’s Room

A few days ago, I shared the new arrangement in our family room as well as the progress on Calvin’s room.  I said I would give all of the details on the new pieces of furniture and this post is making good on that promise! Now, I admit, furniture stores have never been my thing.  Give me a flea market, antique store, thrift shop or yard sale!  That’s where most of my pieces have been found and I’m pretty proud of my resourcefulness and ability to make-do.  But there are some pieces that can be difficult to find second-hand and it’s also nice to mix in the new with the old to make a home a little more comfortable, functional, or hard-wearing. A few months ago, I rearranged the furniture in my family room to a two-sofa setup in an “L” shape.  One sofa was leather and another wore a white

progress in Calvin’s room…

We made some real progress in Calvin’s room the past couple of weeks.  As a reminder, we’re transitioning our guest room into a room for our youngest son, Calvin.  He’s ready to have everything done right now, but I’ve been trying to teach him that good rooms aren’t rushed together.  It’s about collecting just the right items and that can take time. With the addition of a desk, bean bag chair, more masculine bed frame, some navy bedding, and a rug, it’s looking a lot more like a boy’s room, and a pretty cool one at that. One of my favorite pieces, though, is his new nightstand.  This room is really small and we needed a small nightstand to fit in the tight space.  I was using a stool when it was a guest room, but Calvin needed something a little more substantial. I happened to have a piece in

The trials of decorating for an 8-year-old boy

Decorating for kids is hard.  I’m learning that as I’m working with my eight-year-old on transforming the guest room into his room.  We have conversations about it that go something like this… “So, let’s talk about your room, bud, and how you would like it to look.” “Okay.” “What colors would you like?” “Ummm… Red, green, black, gray, orange, blue.  And some yellow.” “Hmm.  Okay.  How about a theme?” “Oh!  Broncos and Star Wars and Ninja Turtles.” “Um.  Okay.  Which is your favorite?” “I want to paint the walls and have you paint a big Mikey over there and a light saber over there…” And it just deteriorated from there. Now, I’m all for letting him have a say in his room.  I want him to love it.  But, I also know that most eight year old boys lack a design sense or the concept that when they are twelve,

artwork for Calvin’s room

I remember a conversation I had with Jeanne Oliver a few years ago.  We were talking about art and the classes she offers through her website.  At the time, she was offering a painting class that was based on copying the work of masters.  I remember not knowing quite how to feel about that…a class that is encouraging a student of art to copy the work of someone else.  Isn’t that a no-no? Well, that conversation was such an encouragement to me.  Jeanne shared how copying can be a wonderful way to learn new techniques and explore your own style within the framework of someone else’s work.  Copying is a bad thing when you just rip someone off and don’t give them credit or when you’re delving into the world of copyright infringement, but when you’re using it as a learning tool, there is a lot of value in it.

guest room to boy’s room

My boys have been sharing a room from the point when my youngest, Calvin, was sleeping through the night.  They are 19 months apart and both boys, so it’s just made sense to have them share a room. Now that they are nine and almost eight, I’m seeing that they are both craving their own space.  Since they have the same interests and are so close in age they pretty much share everything.  While they are best friends and get along most of the time, there is definitely a little too much togetherness and that’s showing as they pick at each other. So, we have decided to turn the guest room into Calvin’s room.  We only use it a few times a year for guests, so it really makes sense to claim it for one of the boys. I honestly resisted the idea for a while, but I thought back to
