One of my favorite decorating books for over twenty years is New Country Style by Country Home. I remember pouring over one particular room again and again that showed how dramatically a room’s look can change by swapping out slipcovers. The room was completely transformed, and I always wanted to replicate that in my own home. I’ve shared before that I sew out of thriftiness and because it allows me to customize my home, but it’s not my favorite thing to do. Making one slipcover for each piece of furniture has always been enough, and I’ve never been able to coax myself into making a second set.
The sofa in our living room, though- the Elias from SixPenny– has a changeable cover and comes in a wide variety of fabric options. I started with something safe – a linen cover in Warm Oatmeal.
After having the sofa for a couple of years, I was ready to try a different cover for a new look and some versatility to swap the covers with the change of the seasons. So, last week, I removed the linen covers to have them cleaned, gave everything a good fluff and vacuum, and put on the new covers. I selected cotton velvet in the color Sugar Rush.
Oh my goodness…isn’t it gorgeous? It exceeded all expectations and looks absolutely stunning. While an off-white linen has been my default slipcover choice for years, this shows me how much warmth and color I was missing! It speaks to the painting and makes my cool blues and greens pop. It’s really beautiful.

If you can’t tell, I am over the moon about it. I thought initially that I would swap back to the linen covers in the spring, but now I’m not so sure! The color is just so perfect for this room, and I think I would miss it.
I haven’t had a lot of time to work on home projects over the past few months, so it was nice to take an hour or so to give the living room some attention beyond running the vacuum and dusting.
