makeover in a month | home office makeover reveal

The makeover in a month is finished and it’s time for me to share the full home office makeover reveal! A few weeks ago, when I was planning out the projects to work on with my parents, my office wasn’t officially on the list.  I had written “home office – stripes?”  I was considering something like painting tone-on-tone stripes on the walls.  I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I knew it needed just a little something more.  I rearranged and fluffed the office a bit a couple of months ago (all with things I had on hand) and liked the result, but I wanted to make the walls more interesting and customize the desk chair.  Wallpaper and inexpensive 2/3-height paneling did the trick! If you missed the first few posts about this home office makeover, you can find them here… Installing the paneling Slipcovering the desk chair

makeover in a month | blue and white wallpaper in the home office

Welcome to part three of the Makeover in a Month series with Leslie of My 100-Year-Old Home,   Melissa of The Inspired Room,  and KariAnne of Thistlewood Farms.  Just as it sounds, we’re each giving one room a makeover in a month!  I’ve been working on adding more layers and detail to my home office.  It hasn’t been a total overhaul, but building on what was already there to make it a bit more interesting.  I started by adding 2/3-height paneling and slipcovering my desk chair and now I’m hanging this charming blue and white wallpaper above the paneling. If you follow me on Instagram, then you know I had a bit of a decorating meltdown over this decision.  I wasn’t crying over a pint of ice cream or anything, but I became paralyzed when I second-guessed myself.  Should I paint the paneling a color?  Is white too boring and predictable?  Would the wallpaper be

makeover in a month | slipcovered desk chair

If you missed part one of the Makeover in a Month series, where we installed and painted paneling, you can catch up HERE.  In this post, I’m continuing my office makeover by sharing my slipcovered desk chair. If you’re observant, you may have noticed that a few desk chairs have come and gone from my workspaces over the years.  I have a terrible time finding one that is comfortable, but doesn’t look like something from the set of Star Trek.  The vintage-style desk chair that is comfortable for long days on the computer has been elusive.  It’s been a struggle that has resulted in purchasing and passing along half a dozen desk chairs over the years.  The bright side is that my kids are always excited to claim my latest reject! When Jeff and I both had to work from home and I was sitting in my studio chair all

makeover in a month | installing paneling in the office

If you follow me on Instagram, you know we were installing paneling in my office last week!  In case you haven’t caught on, we’re making a big push on home projects this summer.  There are a few things that have led to this project push – my shoulder is finally project-ready (it’s been doing so well), we’ve saved up for some of these bigger projects and finally pulled the trigger, my parents were able to visit for the first time in almost a year and they are here to help with the DIY stuff, and the main thing is that I have a one huge project coming up that all of these projects tie in to!  All of this to say, there is a method to the madness.  It’s not just that I have a bee in my bonnet! So, when Leslie of My 100-Year-Old Home pitched the idea of

five things | decorating a home office

I did Let’s Go with Layla (of the Lettered Cottage) today on Instagram Stories and thought I would share my tips and ideas for decorating a home office here on the blog as well!  Aaaaand, I decided “five things” would be a good series to post on the blog now and then…  just five little tips, tricks, ideas, thoughts, etc. in a neatly packaged post.  I know there is so much information spread over 3,000+ blog posts, so it’s nice to consolidate some of those ideas in a short & sweet post. So, here we go – five tips when decorating a home office… ONE sometimes new is better than vintage/antique As a lover of antiques and all things old, worn, and patinaed, it’s really hard for me to say it, but sometimes you need a new desk or a new chair for a home office to be functional and

gold leaf frame & office details

I was supposed to be cleaning.  Let me say that right upfront.  It was a self-imposed task, but my home projects have distracted me from basic housekeeping.  I gave the kitchen a quick cleaning – wiping down the counters and the stove, emptying the dishwasher, vacuuming.  I even got as far as cleaning the toilet in the 1/2 bathroom and running the vacuum in the living room, but the cleaning stopped there.  The rabbit trail started with hanging a picture light over my Manet study and it turned into reclaiming my office, rearranging furniture, and gold leafing my inspiration board frame.  It wasn’t what I should’ve done, but it’s what I needed to do.  I’ve learned that when inspiration strikes, I just need to roll with it and the cleaning can wait. Jeff has been inhabiting my office since March, but he’s working at the church more often and, when

reworking the office shelves

Buying used books on Amazon and regular visits to means that the bookshelves in my office and studio are always in flux.  I’m constantly having to arrange and rearrange to accommodate new acquisitions.  So, a couple of weeks ago, I took some time to get the shelves in both my office and studio tidied up. Yes, I organize my books by color and size.  It just looks neater on the shelf to me and I can still find what I’m looking for, because books that are similar in topic are stored on different shelves in different rooms.  All of my art and design books are in my studio and my home and business books are in my office.  This method isn’t going to work for everyone, but it works for me! I also decided to hang my guitar next to the bookshelf.  I find that I’m more likely to pick

studio desk chair & the computer ban

Since I did the office/studio furniture shuffle in February, I’ve been sitting on makeshift desk chairs.  At first, it was a Fench cane chair that worked pretty well, even if it wasn’t the best height or the most comfortable.  But, I could slowly feel the cane seat loosening and it finally punched through (which was awesome for my self-esteem.)  So, in a pinch, I pulled in a dining chair.  It worked fine, but I noticed my back would be aching after a long day at the computer.  I needed a proper desk chair for my studio desk. I looked for months, but I just wasn’t finding what I wanted.  I had to be comfortable, not ridiculously expensive, and I didn’t want it to look like something from the set of Star Trek.  I wanted it to be adjustable, have arms, and the ability to rock. Let me tell you…I looked
