Lucketts Finds 2015

Between the heat and humidity, bruises and goose-eggs from moving furniture, early mornings, and take-out and fair food, my body was crying out for rest, healthy food and a bit of pampering.  I’m finally starting to feel a bit more like myself this afternoon.  I slept in, spent the morning unapologetically binge-watching Masterpiece Classics, ate mixed veggies and baked chicken for dinner and even soaked in a lavender epsom salt bath.  I could probably spend a few more days like this, but there are deadlines and things to be done, so Kriste and I are back in the studio tomorrow.

We literally dumped everything from Lucketts on the studio floor.  The things that didn’t sell and the boxes, bags, tents, tarps…it’s all haphazardly cluttering up our creative space, so we need to get things sorted and organized.  I also want to inventory what’s left, so we can put it up for sale.

Since I’ve been overloading you with pictures from our booth, I thought I would break it up and share pictures of a few of the things I bought.

It’s really hard to come away from Lucketts without buying something!  I usually expect to find a few goodies, but next year I need to set a budget for myself and plan a little better.  Last year, I just bought a few 78 records for my phonograph, but this year, I found a bunch of things I couldn’t resist.  I sort of stumbled into all of them.

It was mid-day on Friday and I skimmed the booths on the way back from a visit to the port-o-potties.  A shelf with a few ironstone tureens caught my eye.  I swung my leg around mid-step to head into the booth for a closer look.  These tureens were old, unique and well-priced, so I offered to buy all three and came back from a bathroom trip with an armload of ironstone.

Jeff squinted his eyes at me and shook his head.  “Are you buying stuff from your own booth?”

“No, no.  I bought this ironstone from another booth.”  The fact that my booth was full of ironstone and I was still hunting it was not lost on me.  There was no way I could explain that this ironstone was different than what I had in my booth, so I just carried it to Kriste and asked her to put it in a box for me.  I think she shook her head, too.

I bought the two tureens in the front row…

The really old pieces of ironstone speak to me louder than most pieces and these have some nice age to them.  The discoloration and crazing make me love them even more.

…and this is the third one.

I later picked up this sweet little pitcher on the middle shelf…

…and this larger pitcher that was stained to perfection captured my fancy as well.

I was counting the buds on one of my hydrangeas and there are over 40 of them, so this pitcher will soon be filled with cuttings from my own bushes!  I’m particularly excited about this one, because it’s only given me leaves for four years and now it’s finally blooming.

Speaking of gardening, one thing that’s been on my wish list for a while is a new (old) patio set. I’ve been looking around on Craig’s List, but hadn’t found anything I really loved that was a good price.  I wanted something with four to six chairs, vintage metal, preferably white, and Jeff wanted chairs with arms.  When I was walking in on Saturday morning, I spotted a set that fit everything we were looking for.  I knew the dealer, so she gave me a nice discount and it fit in the price range I had in mind for a set.  Sold!

And it looks so good on the deck!  I’m really enjoying gardening and working on the outside of the house a bit more this year and I’m looking forward to some alfresco dining.

I came home with two more pieces, but I’ll share those another day…

Nice scores. I love vintage iron patio furniture and have a basement full of Woodard waiting for restoration. You can’t do that with plastic furniture and it doesn’t blow away in the wind. I am currently looking for the curved sofa that Woodard offered.

Masterpiece Theater is my weakness and I watch everything before it comes to the US by going to simplyjune.org The new series called Poldark is a must. I don’t know how I am going to wait until the next season is released.

Jan, thanks for the website tip. I used to pre-view on “watch_TVseries.net” but not without attracting malware and bugs. I will definitely try your suggestion around October when Downton Abbey’s last season is aired in the UK. Have you seen the first series of Poldark that Masterpiece Theater produced back in the 70’s? You might enjoy it!

        • Jan

No, I haven’t, but I might need to watch something Poldark to tide me over until the second season. Be prepared to swoon.

Nice find! In case you weren’t aware, your patio set is vintage Salterini. I have the same set, in my family for at least 50 years. I have vivid memories of my mom with a paintbrush applying seafoam green to them, over the original patina green color, but when I got the set 15 years ago, I had them sandblasted and powdercoated in black. They are fantastic, and I hope you enjoy them.

        Marian,
You did score with a Salerini patio set.
My wife and I found a woodard set and found it in a 1957 Woodard Chantilly Rose ad on google. It is a pale rose pink and looks great with our dove grey house. It is so pretty my Mom in Law can’t wait till we have our first cookout.

I am totally with you on the more crazed and brown, the better the ironstone. Nice choices!

    4. Alicia

My parents have that patio set and the glider that goes with it. They bought theirs new and we just repainted it for them this weekend as it was needing a little freshening up. Hope you enjoy yours!

I’ve recently started using your paints! Love them! I noticed the buffet holding the ironstone – you didn’t paint the whole thing. Do you have a picture of the entire piece? I’m inspired and love that you left some of it original.

    6. the uncommon pearl

Glad you had a bit of time of shopping yourself! I especially love your new to you patio set overlooking your beautiful yard. Gardening is fun. I like to think of it as decorating outdoors 🙂

Of course, the Ironstone is always a winner 😉

I bought a patio set in 1980, when I was expecting my first child….we still have it today… at the time it was a fortune, over 250.00 with cushion and umbrella. I have clear coated it several times and spray painted it 3 times in between…It winters on our covered porch…still looks good and solid as can be…my daughter has the same set you have. Some things do last forever.. How is your son doing with the pump? My daugher has experienced some lows with hers, Now, after having it for 12 years she can can adjust it herself…She used to have to eat a snack at bedtime and as a teenager not always doable. As a pregnant 25 years old with twins she would sometimes fall asleep and not eat…low blood sugars are scarey….after 20 years of this lifestyle, we always have gummi bears, reg soda, OJ, some kind of instant carbs. We are friends with a family who child in pre K has a pump. The teacher or caregiver can moniter it with a remote…such great strides in medicine…Rest up Buttercup. K

OK, just one question, did your ironstone slop bucket sell? Still dreaming about it!!!

    9. Teresa

      Marian,
I am sure you got some serious eye rolls from your husband, Kristie and family when you came walking back with more Ironstone! Its hard to walk away from a beautiful, unique piece of ironstone that’s priced decent.

Besides buying the beautiful wheat pattern Ironstone sugar bowl and small pitcher from you on Saturday, I also found a few other pieces. One being a set of scalloped shaped bread dishes. The tureen you bought at Lucketts is almost identical to the one I found a few weeks ago at a consignment shop in Richmond. I cant figure out what piece of fruit or nut is on the lid though?

      • Sarah

If your willing to share, I’d love to know where a good consignment shop in Richmond is! 🙂 I live in Richmond and am always looking for new places to shop!

        • Teresa

          Hi Sarah,
I will be glad to share. I live in the Chester area but I shop all around town. Here are some on my list that I really like:

          1) West End Antiques Mall on Staples Mill Rd
          2) Whispers of Time, Consignment Connection and RVA antiques on Lakeside Avenue. ( I believe each has a website.)
          3) Lizzies and Alexander’s Antiques on Midlothian Turnpike.
          4) Through the Garden Gate on Rt. 301. (A little far out in Hanover county but worth the drive).

There is another in the Gayton road area but I cant think of the name at this moment. Hope this helps!

    10. Rowena Philbeck

Wow Marian, You did good on the way to a potty break..LOL. Take more of those next time and find some good deals!!! I so wish I could come their one year but I live in Texas and that would be quite a drive. Would be fun and maybe when I retire would be a good road trip and I would have to bring a trailer for sure. Thanks for sharing and loved the video. Get some rest!!!

I’m so happy you were able to purchase a few items! But the most important question I have is, did you sell the ironstone slop bucket?

    12. Eileen

It’s nice that you were able to make some purchases for yourself….and what else, but More ironstone! It’s hard to say no to a passion! I’m also a Masterpiece Classics fan and the whole PBS channel. Besides Downtown Abbey(of course), there’s the Paradise, Mr. Selfridge and Call the midwife. Great way to rest up!

      • Alicia

re Masterpiece Classics…PBS channel – there’s also Sherlock (yes!), Wolfhall, Grantchester, Doc Martin, Foyle’s War, Inspector Lewis, Endeavor, Vera, The Paradise (not to be confused with Paradise) and oldies like Inspector Lynley, the original Poldark (1970’s), MI-5, Forsythe Saga (Damien Lewis), and so, so much more.

    13. Alicia

“unapologetically binge-watching Masterpiece Classics” is one of my favorite ways of entertaining myself! You deserve it! Could you share which one of the “classics” you were watching? So many excellent productions to choose from.

    14. tanya

I love the stained ironstone pieces! Loved and used rather than stuck on a shelf, they hold so much more history and value (to me) in their imperfection. Beautiful finds.

    15. Anya

You did well! The patio set is very cute, and I’m looking forward to seeing photos of your hydrangea blossoms in ironstone pitchers. I love the crazing and discoloration too, I love to think of the pieces actually being used and loved by someone.

    16. Donna Doble-Brown

Marian, thanks for the response in regards to the toolbox . . . When you have time, could you or Kriste just snap a pic of the inside with your phone for me? And how much do you think shipping would be? I
I deleted your email by mistake . . .ugh! SORRY!

      Thanks for the help!

      Hi Marian,
I told hubby that this year’s Lucketts was on my Bucket List and I gave him the dates, etc. Lo and behold, he suggested we hop in the car and make the trip from WIsconsin this coming weekend which is Memorial Day 🙂 Just a week late he was due to his selective hearing…boohoo! I wasn’t after your ironstone but was after one or two of your French chairs so my question is this? How many do you have and when will you be selling them? Since hubby is now making it up to me, I know he would drive to Pennsylvania so as to score, hopefully, a chair or two. I’m especially fond of the checks with the yellow toile but any will do I’m thinking. Is it possible for you to send me a list and description of your chairs either for purchasing now or at your sale? I would so appreciate it 🙂 On another note, your porta potty trip was definitely a success because my hubby also uses the ol’ porta potty trip as an excuse and invariably comes back much later loaded down with goodies Sounds as though you’re two of a kind? Rest up over the long weekend…

HA HA HA..You just threw Me into a childhood flashback with that patio set, Marian!! My parents had the same set in black when I was growing up..I still have the barcart sitting on My round flagstone patio, Looking very lonely because I too,Haven’t found a set either (Although I just seen a curved, dark “wicker” set @ World Market that just caught My eye!!) other then the Tiger Lillies that surround the patio (Put in by the previous owner & VERY overgrown) That is the only thing out there. It needs to be sanded & painted because My Mom had painted it every color under the sun until She moved into a small Co-Op in ’93 & sold the set along with giving Me the bar cart. The paint is now chipping off & shows every color as if it was a personal scrapbook for Me.I hope You enjoy all Your beautiful finds..You did good,Girl!!

    19. Dee

Love your stoneware. I am very familiar with the potters of Stoke-On-Trent. I have some tiles made there on my website with a bit of history on the village.
There is a lot of information online about the village and a large museum is there- thought you might be interested
Hope you got a good bit of rest after your weekend- enjoy following your posts!
