Kim’s Coastal Bedroom Twin | room makeover

Every once in a while, I get to see how something I share on my blog inspires someone else.  Most of the time, it’s just me at my laptop, pressing publish and receiving a handful of comments as feedback.  Over a year ago, though, I received an e-mail from one of my blog readers, Barbara, who was so in love with my design for my parents’ bedroom that she decided to replicate it in her own home.  She reached out a few times to ask questions and get clarification on sources or measurements for the built-ins my dad and I built, and then, a few months ago, she sent the final result.

As a reminder, here are a few photos of my parents’ room makeover…

And here is Barbara’s room…

She did a fantastic job, didn’t she?  I love that she made choices that worked with her room and the things she already had, while still capturing the same calming, coastal vibe.

Barbara was so kind to take these pictures of her room and give me permission to share them here on the blog.

Several years ago, I toyed with the idea of doing more room makeovers, but I came to the conclusion that my approach to room makeovers didn’t translate well to working with clients.  I like to let rooms evolve over time, and especially in that season of life, I preferred to do as much of it myself as possible.  It is fulfilling for me to do exactly this – share my approach, the process, and the end result, and hope that blog readers will take what speaks to them and run with it.

That’s just what Barbara did, and well done, indeed!

  1. Great job! Barbara completed a beautiful room using so many of the features you accomplished in your mom’s makeover. Thanks to you both for sharing photos as I love seeing a good reveal and this reminds us how utilizing someone else’s inspiration can help us begin a project that we can make our own.

  2. Beautiful rooms! Well done Barbara and Marian!
I’ve been meaning to comment for a while, and this gave me a little push. We recently renovated our kitchen, and I borrowed heavily from yours :). In fact, I sent a screen shot of your window area to show our builder and my husband what I wanted. I also looked and looked for sconces and couldn’t find anything I loved, then I looked back on your post on your scon looked on Ebay. I finally found something very similar to yours, and I love them! I can’t tell you how many times I went back and looked at your kitchen posts. So thank you very much! I am so pleased with our kitchen and am very grateful for your inspiration. It would not have turned out as well without you!

  3. The tea you enjoyed in Italy was the price included in your tour or did you have to pay separately ? ? Tks for responding !

  4. Wow!!! She did an awesome job. At first, I thought I was still looking at your parent’s room. She should be very proud.

  5. She did a FAB job with that sweet bedroom of hers – and you did a fab job on your parents’ room. This was a really neat post and I hope it happens again cuz there’s nothing like imitation being the most sincere form of flattery!

  6. Marian, wanted to look up that bedskirt link on your old post and it’s no longer working – do you know if it is still available and if so I’d love a fresh link to it, if I may, please?

    1. If you click over to the reveal post (linked at the bottom), all of the materials and products are linked.

  7. The inspiration was fabulous and the interpretation was very well done. I’m impressed. At first, I didn’t realize I was looking at a new bedroom and had to flip back and forth. Not a twin or a clone but certainly a close relative.

  8. I was confused at first but then realized that it’s a similar room with a similar design. Both are beautiful!!!

  9. What a great job Barbara did with your inspiration and ideas. You’ve provided me with inspiration and ideas for years now. I believe I learned from you that you don’t have to buy new, simpley take a good look at what you own and what makes you happy and then go from there. It saves money and seems more homey and comfortable.

  10. Well done Barbara, it looks fabulous!!! I have always loved this room that Marian shared with us and yours is just as fantastic!!! So calming!

  11. Congratulations Barbara. Job well done. Both rooms are beautiful and calming. Thank you for sharing these images.

  12. Wow! Barbara did an amazing job and for a moment, I thought I was looking at your parents’ bedroom. Your parents’ bedroom was one of my favorite makeovers and every time I see it again, I discover something new I hadn’t noticed before. For instance, I never really noticed the tall chest with display before and how beautiful it is. Barbara has a painted high boy in her bedroom that is as equally gorgeous. What I most love about both bedrooms is that it has a coastal, calm and tranquil feel without screaming coastal which I think takes away from a room. Thanks for sharing Barbaras great work!

  13. I love how Barbara took your parents’ bedroom as an example and turned her own bedroom into such a lovely space.
