Kim’s Coastal Bedroom | part 2 | the before

I went over to my mom & dad’s house today to take some before pictures of their master bedroom, the one that’s my next makeover project.

I shared the concept for the room in part 1, but here’s a reminder…

The space right now is a pretty blank slate.  My parents moved here a few years ago and my mom’s always been a little stuck on this room.

(As an aside, when I first got to the house, my mom went running to the bedroom in front of me.  She said she wanted to make sure it was nice and clean.  She didn’t want to have happen to her what happened to Megan!  In case you missed it, I went to Megan’s house to work on her master bedroom and we ended up working on her home office instead, which happened to be the room where she threw all of the junk before I came over.  Poor Megan, her junkiest room was posted all over my blog.)

They have made a few changes recently.  They swapped their bed from a king to a queen and added plantation shutters to the windows.  The wall color is pretty, but my mom’s not in love with it for this room.  She painted the walls when she first moved in and wasn’t trying to match anything specifically, but just wanted something other than builder-grade white.

We’re going to get rid of the bookshelf on the right and my dad and I are going to make built-ins around the bed, similar to this…

My mom was initially against the planking behind the bed, but with all of your encouraging comments and my brothers prompting, she’s decided to go for it.  Or let me go for it, rather.

She actually did ask me how many holes I would put in her wall, though.

Lots, probably.   But it’ll look great and, my brother pulled out Shaunna’s famous words, “Spackle dries in like three minutes, ya’ll!”

I’m going to paint the tall cabinet, of course, and I have a really cool idea for giving it a new/old look.

And we’re getting a 9 x 12 flatweave rug to soften the wood floors.  They are pretty, but look a little stark right now.

We’ll also change out the mirror over the long dresser.  We already found a beautiful wood-framed antique mirror on a shopping trip a few weeks ago.  It’ll update the overall look of the dresser.

I’m going to slipcover this wing chair to make it more neutral.  It’s a nice chair and a good scale for the space, so we’ll keep it.

Do you notice the little blonde girl in the dirndl?  Yep.  That’s me.

In addition to taking before pictures, I needed to get some measurements for the built-ins and bedskirt.

The built-ins can’t go wall-to-wall, because of the plantation shutters and I don’t want to crowd the window.  So, we’re going to put the bed a little to the right of center to allow that room and still have the built-ins be symmetrical.

We also have to work around the drawers in the base of their bed.  The cabinets can’t be too deep or you can’t open the drawers.

So, I did lots of staring, thinking, measuring, sketching, note-taking and adding.

I’ll share my sketches and more detailed plans for the room soon…

I can’t wait to see the room when it’s finished! I love the coastal look you have in mind.

I’m so glad she’s on board to do the planked walls! And I love how your brother quoted Shauna! Lol! Every time I make another hole in my wall I hear “spackle dries in like 3 minutes ya’ll” and I smile 🙂

Interesting that decisions already made (shutters, drawers under bed) will affect the position and layout of the built-ins. And that is part of design: problem-solving. Looking forward to your elegant solutions!

I love your blog! Have a nice weekend:)

sound wonderful, and she will love it, after all she is your biggest fan. I have been looking for a piece like that tall chest. Do you know what it is called?
Can’t wait to see the progress!

I have no idea! I think it’s a part of a larger unit, but I’m not sure. My mom got it from my grandma.

        • Kim

It came from Cosco years ago. Marian’s grandmother bought two. We ended up with one. It is great storage but I have been wanting to paint it for a couple of years. So can’t wait.

ok…..that is why I like it, then. old designs are the best. thank you for telling me that. I love it, and know it is going to be beautiful!

This is going to be interesting to see how you pull this off! But I’m sure you will. 😉

Can you cut away some of the wood on the clunky feet of the furniture? “Coastal” seems light and breezy.

I’m having a problem with the colors…..where’s the blue? Why light mustard??

Lots of softening needed…..I don’t know about more wood around the bed.

Sorry to be critical but am trying to be helpful.

How exciting. Can’t wait to see how you change the dresser. Too cute that pic of you. 🙂

A quick question, I can’t seem to find that floral pattern. Looks like a Waverly…checked Sailrite but don’t seem to locate it. What is that pattern or product number please. Thank you in advance, love what it will be like….totally refreshing!

      • Karen

Thank you Marian, for the info. Turns out I have my guest bedroom in the works, something to me was missing. The floral fabric just sang to me, so it may be something I can use to give that extra punch to the room. Your project will be beautiful. The paint color for the room is Benjamin Moore, Quiet moments…very similar to yours,,,so you see where I am going. Thanks again.

Want to come to San Diego?:):)

For the shiplap- could you mount it on a slim underlayer and then attach that to the wall? Just to limit the number of holes?
Just an idea. Love seeing the creative process and thanks for taking us along!

    12. Shelly

      Marian,
Maybe you could make a cubby for the CPap machine in the shelving unit around the bed. It could have tambor door. That way it could be hidden away when not in use.
      Blessings

That is one of the things I asked Marian to figure out. It has to be easy. As you can see I have a basket but he doesn’t tuck the hose in. So Marian has an idea for it. It certainly is not decorative is it? And I know there are lots of people that have them so we may start a trend :).

    13. Marlene Stephenson

Well you gave us somewhat of an idea, sounds wonderful can’t wait to see how it all goes together.

    14. Cecilia

Love the plans for this room. It’s going to be gorgeous! Can’t wait to see more.

I have a cpap also. It is on the second (or lower) open shelf of my bedside table. The power strip for all my chargers, bedside lamp, cpap, etc is on the floor parallel to the side of the bed right near the top. The hose for the cpap goes out the side of the table and is tucked behind all the pillows on the bed. I need to move the cpap to refill the humidifier part every few days. Don’t forget to have lots of outlets reachable from each side of the bed. i.e.: radio, phone, lamp, heating pad, chargers for kindle, cpap, magnifying mirror (hard to see the eyebrows) alarm clock, etc.
What’s funny is that your mom said she has wanted to paint that skinny dresser for several years. The cobbler’s kids have no shoes.

    16. Liz H.

Hi Ladies- I second Tamara’s suggestion, you could cut plywood to go where the planking will go and use it as the base for the planking. You’d only need 4-6 screws to attach the entire “package” to studs in the wall and in 6-10 years it could easily come down & be replaced with something else. I love the design, it’s a fresh modern take on a coastal space, great creativity!

      Love your enginuity & energy.

I love the room and can’t wait to see you use your magic to enhance it. I love your style!

I enjoy following your process which I try to follow when updating our rooms. We’re re-doing each room in the house, with the goal to sell in one year, and on a barely-there budget! But with your processes and tutorials I know we can come pretty close to fresh and beautiful. Ours is a 225 year old farmhouse; the original rooms will be done in farmhouse primitive and the additions in more of an industrial farmhouse look. Its a LOT of work, but if it allows us to sell our dream-house-turned-money-pit, it’ll be worth it! Love your style – and thanks for all the tips!

I love seeing the befores the afters. You have a great blank canvas (you don’t have to cover deep pink walls like we did when we bough this house… the whole house had old 80’s pink walls, like being stuck in a bottle of peptobismol).

Really looking forward to see how it all turns out.

    21. Deb

So glad you are doing a room in your parents home! Looking forward to see the process!

    22. Lauren Baxter

I love the space, so much potential and YAY for planked walls, I think she’s going to love it once it’s done. I can’t wait to see what you do with the tall cabinet. I think that dresser would look great in the farmhouse white (if your allowed to paint it). I can’t wait to see the blues in that space, I think there should be some pops of green in their too 😉 maybe even if it’s just plants on the shelves?

I love your fabric choices! Can you share the fabric above next to the floral? I am in the process of Coastalizing a house myself and THAT. IS. PERFECTT!!!

Great ideas and I’m so glad your Mom is going with the plank wall! Just don’t let her be around when you are nailing it in place ;). I love Shauna’s comment!

      Have fun!

PS: Don’t you love that it doesn’t matter how old we are- Moms still have our 1st grade picture on their wall? <3

    25. Lori

Can you tell me what kind of fabric you prefer to use to slipcover ? I have two chairs that need them badly. Thanks! Lori
