Who (what) am I decorating for?

A few months ago, when I was picking something out for my bathroom, a thought occurred to me….

Why am I picking this?  Because I love it?  Because it’s best for my family?  Because it will photography well?  It’s more in line with what a magazine might want to feature?  Who or what am I decorating for?

Dangerous thoughts.

The decorating choices I make have changed a lot since I started blogging and writing freelance articles and getting magazine features.  My style hasn’t changed…just evolved a bit.  I did have to face the truth, though, that I do look at everything now in terms of how it will photograph.  I find myself buying things just because they will look good in pictures.  Arranging furniture in ways that will look good for pictures.  Choosing materials and paint colors that will look good in pictures.  It’s happened so slowly that I’ve hardly noticed it, but it hit me in the face a few months ago and I’ve struggled with it since and honestly, haven’t known quite what to do with this realization.

It’s not that the choices I’m making aren’t my style or that I’m expecting my family to live 24/7 in a magazine photo, but I am letting the fact that my home and my business are tangled together be one of the biggest factors in my decorating decisions.  I am always wanting to change things out to keep the look fresh.

I don’t know if that’s right or wrong.  It’s just sort of the way it is.  Part of the reality of being a home/DIY blogger?  The nature of the business?  I suppose it’s not all that different from a model or actress making decisions about her hair, tattoos, piercings, style, etc. based on the kind of work she wants to get.

I don’t really have a point in sharing this.  It’s just been on my mind and I’m trying to be more mindful about why I’m making the choices I am.  It’s okay to want to have something that looks great in a photograph, but it has to be balanced with what I love, what works for my family, what’s functional and what’s livable.  I feel like my home is all of those things, but maybe I need to make a few more decorating decisions that aren’t based on whether they are photogenic or not.

I guess more than that, I want my readers to know that behind the caned furniture…

…and fluffed pillows…

There is a life that’s lived here.  There are Lego houses on the furniture and curtain panels missing and trim that still needs to be finished.  It is a real home…

…but, if I’m totally honest, maybe not as real as a home that isn’t photographed daily.

I’ve been cleaning up my house this week, since it’s very fuzzy and crumby and sticky and dirty and messy after neglecting it as I got ready for the Chapel Market.  When I clean, I get really inspired, so yesterday, I hung a row of ironstone plates on an awkward wall in the living room.  I also touched up the wall paint.  Since it’s an awkward wall, it became the place I stacked boxes and antique store finds and the wall has taken a beating.  A fresh coat of paint and a simple row of ironstone plates made a huge difference.

…and I love how it works with the new Dental Cabinet.

After cleaning, my living room was box-free for the first time in months…for about a day.

My husband just got a fancy video camera, microphones, etc., so I can start taking my video tutorials a bit more seriously.  Okay, a lot more seriously than my current videos that are made with a Flip camera on a tripod without any thought to sound or lighting.  Over the past few months, I’ve come to the realization (a lot of that has been going on lately) that I need to take my business more seriously than I am and this new video camera is a part of that and I’m really excited about stepping things up in that area.

Back to the boxes.  My poor husband could hardly get them opened before I’m looking over his shoulder, asking him to break down the boxes and throw all of the trash away and basically get everything out of the room I just cleaned ASAP.  Please.

AND I’m finally designing a little something for a MMSMP t-shirt…

I was going to hire someone to do it, but was really inspired to just start doodling and designed it myself.

It seems to be one of those seasons where I feel very inspired and excited about all of the things I have on my to-do list.  I love those seasons.

See you tonight for FFF!

Just a few more…. Francine, Franchesca or Penelope.

        Sorry, wrong post!

    2. Kelly

I am truly curious. Does your husband have any say in decoration of your home? Or do you just do it without any thoughts of your husband design likes?

I am extremely mindful of my husband’s taste in decorating. After all he lives here with me and in this house that he pays for. We do basically have the same taste and I always run by him first before I make a huge purchase. I wanted to put up white subway titles in our kitchen and my husband vetoed it. I didn’t do it out of respect for him.

I have seen some bloggers just plow threw this house with then own taste without any input from their husband. I often wonder how do the husband feels about that.

      Have a great weekend.

Yes, I do take him into account. He really doesn’t care about decorating, but he loves my style and trusts my taste. He’s unsure of a few things (like the cow head over the range), but he doesn’t make a fuss about it.

I’m mostly mindful about him in what I don’t do. I know he doesn’t want a bunch of junk on his night stand and doesn’t like pillows on the family room sofa and wants chairs we sit in regularly to be comfortable, etc, so I work around that. He balances me out well, because I would probably be totally impractical!

        • Kristi

Wow. What a great question and insight! My husband is the same way. He has no design sense or opinions other than functionality issues. I have learned to not even beg for an opinion because usually it just upsets me that he really doesn’t care.

In my macabre moments, I sometimes think what if something happened to me and he was left on his own with the kids? Would he keep the “home” I’ve created as a continuity and familiar space for the kids and himself? We move around so much as a military family, would he even be able to put together a house in the way I would to keep that familiarity and sense of home? And heaven forbid if he had to make a sofa purchase without me!! What would he do? So many questions….

    3. Kristen

Yes, I completely agree about buying for bloggability! When I scour antique sales, etc., I’m drawn to things I can photograph and use as a prop more than anything. I actually caught myself recently, as I was picking out fabric for new curtains, wondering if my readers would like this “different type of fabric” vs. just choosing it because “I” loved it! It’s hard to open up our homes and design choices to the world sometimes, but still fun and enjoyable.

I love the new cow painting… I’ve got to get Cindy to paint my favorite childhood cow one of these days!

    4. Sylvia Marie

I think she would like the name Eunagene, or Evette 🙂

    5. terri

I like the name “Holly”, just simple “Holly”

    6. Talitha

Thanks for keeping it real! My house also looks a lot cleaner and tidier when I expect visitors. Not trying to pretend, I actually like the extra motivation to get things done! So who determines what’s ‘real’ or ‘normal’? It’s really helpful to check from time to time why we do the things we do! So, thank you for your honesty! Such posts are for me the best… more than a look into your home it’s a look into your heart that is inspiring.

    7. terri

I am still on the cow names, sorry. Here are a few others that I like, how about: Wynona, Aggie, Abegail, Wanda, Ada or Wendy

      Marian:
I love reading your posts and always get design inspiration from the way you display and arrange your treasures. Can you give me suggestions for hanging china on a wall. I have some lovely Quimper pieces and want to display them, but they are valuable and I want to make sure that they are secure. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!
      Phyllis

I’ve been reading your posts since first seeing you in Better Homes & Gardens “Christmas Ideas 2012”. It’s funny to me just how much you’ve influenced my own personal sense of style. I love so much of what you do…not absolutely everything…but the very vast majority. Now…when hearing that….I wouldn’t want you to think that I am insulting you or anything, because that’s just the nature of design. Some things appeal to a certain niche, some things don’t. I think that you’ve been so successful in what you do because the selections that you make appeal to a broad base and you have a true talent at making appealing arrangements out of things that others would never think of. That is what makes you an INNOVATOR! That is why I look to you for design, because my DNA is missing that ‘innovator gene’! I can paint and tile and build all day long, but when it comes to arranging furniture and accessorizing I am sadly lost. In the last year, I have refinished my first dresser…and purchased a french provencial table and cane chairs that I am planning to do like your old set. I plan to emulate your table settings from last years Christmas magazine. Don’t worry….when everyone “oohs” and “awws” I am totally going to take all the credit. LOL That’s why you’re doing what you’re doing, right? To help a girl out and to bring a little joy to people’s lives? Bring on the design ideas girl….I’ve got people to impress. 🙂 BTW…thanks for what you do!

    10. Rhonda

I love your interiors and they inspire me although my palette is more green and creamy. I love seeing that you have some natural wood pieces mixed in with the painted pieces and that you have a red toned rug. Never noticed that before. My rugs are all semi antique from eBay and the more affordable ones are red.

I have a couple of questions that I would appreciate knowing the answer to. 1) what are your go to whites for wall and trim paints? And, 2) what is the best way to wash antique linens (I.e. tapestries and needlepoint pieces)

      Thanks

    11. At Rivercrest Cottage

My favorite part of your post was the missing curtain! I literally thought…”welcome to my home.” Thanks for this post. it was one that made me think.

    12. Louise Davis

“Bessie”–growing up we had a Holstein who provided our daily milk (in the unpasteurized days) and she was “Bessie” She looks just like your painting but then don’t most Holsteins look alike!

    13. Shelly Powell

      Marian,

I love your new dental cabinet! I was worried that you might paint it! 🙂 I like the shabby look of it very much and it is perfect for your space and ironstone! Thanks for keeping it real, I know that is one of the many reasons we love your blog. I am glad you had a good time at Chapel Hill.

      Blessings

This post reminds me of when I kept seeing design blogs w burlap pillows all over the place and I was like- who wants to cozy up to a piece of itchy burlap?? I think things need to look good but be comfy and functional. Sometimes my vignettes/displays start overtaking all my surfaces and then I realize- where in this room can someone set down their drink, put up their feet, put down the mail, etc? If the answer is nowhere, then that’s a problem! I just read a quote by a blogger who said (speaking of fabric)- “If I would t wear it, I won’t decorate w it. ” I think that’s a good rule of thumb. And btw the grain sack pillows I bought from you a few years ago are super soft and comfy and get used regularly!

    16. Rita C

Keep it real and you’ll keep having followers, Marian. That’s just one thing I love about you.

As a relatively new blogger, I’ve at times wondered, “are these [blogger] people rearranging rooms and crafting just to have something to say or what??” And just yesterday I was in Lowe’s and the very helpful guy at the paint counter was offering to mix up a few more of the Fall samples for me, noting that light grey was very popular right now, to which I said, “I know, I read a lot of blogs and a lot of folks are jumpin’ on the wagon.” (I did not buy grey, btw). I mentioned I hated painting, whether I was actually doing it or someone else was doing it for me – it’s like moving twice and going nowhere – and all for a new blog appearance? No thanks! I think I’m just beginning a new collection with redeeming all these sample cards in my subscribed magazines.

Your taste and talent are evident in your home, Marian, and your providing instruction and visuals to others (as well as your product) is the heart of your business, your niche. The fact that you are also a picker and refurbish finds with your product and talent are bonuses to the rest of us, whether it’s through inspiring tutorials or actually being able to meet you and buy one of your great remakes (I still want that channeled chair!). Whether you decide to change something in your home, I hope, will always be because YOU love it. And even if you think you do but later don’t, you can always sell it. That’s what we pickers do. Your home will always look great because your basic decor is classic, timeless (and even your basement looks great – I love it, even if it did rain in there. :/).

      Best,
      Rita C. at Panoply
ps – I think your tutorials are fine with the equipment you’ve used so far, but a little perk for you and your business partner is worth a lot – it’s like receiving a bonus for jobs well done, and you both deserve it. 🙂 But it doesn’t mean you have to become any more an expert photographer or your husband an expert videographer. Look how far you gotten without the new camera & video equipment! But knowing you two, you’ll certainly grow your talents as you use them (no pressure in that comment, huh?). Seriously, I hope you have fun. Enjoy your holidays and family time.

    17. Peggy Thal

Francesca ! She is such an elegant cow.

    18. Betty Stapleton

      Prudence,

    19. Pat

If she were mine, she’d be named Sophia. Hope you like it, too.

    20. Linda Evans

I love your home and style…….I just love plates on the wall and the ironstone on the white wall….awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    21. Jessica@The Junk Nest

While I was reading your words, I was thinking to myself…”I do the same thing” when decorating my house lol. Will it photograph well? I don’t even have magazine deals and I do this! Or continually switching my decor out to stay current…it is totally happening here as well.

    22. Laurie

I like Sue or Stella 🙂

    23. Nancy Whitson

      More cow names..
      Poupon
      Lucinda
      Adelaide
      Gudrun
      Hildegarde
      Eloise
      Katrina
      Imogene
      Signe
ERNESTINE…sorry, my iPad kept changing it as unbelievable? That’s why I was forced to use capitals…

    24. Nola

Loved reading your post as usual, love how you always seem to keep it real. I have been very inspired by you and your beautiful home-i have told my daughter I want your book for Xmas and can’t wait to read it.

    25. Susan

Marian, I think that as long as you are mindful of your decisions, it will work out.

I suggest Eufa, (I had a Great-Aunt Eufa) or Eubanks if the critter happens to be male! I love these paintings.

    26. gina

clearly you do what you do for you and your family is out of love. There is nothing wrong about that.Clearly you have planted a seed and are growing, again nothing wrong with that.Great blessings come with growth.I think your doing fabulous work and love watching you grow as it inspires me as well.

    27. Kathryn Davis

I would call her, Eugenie. Very English!

    28. Susan

MMs I know what you mean! Sometimes I hang things in my house because they made a great blog post project but I don’t really want it hanging in my house… I don’t need it, it doesn’t add to my family’s happiness… it’s just there because I made it and blogged about it. I think you’re right… it is the nature of what we do.

    29. Patti

Marion, I love that you can inspire me and keep it real in the same post. Thanks for being such a down to earth chick that doesn’t aim to make the rest of us feel “less than” lol!

    30. Jodi

Can I make a small suggestion about the photo with the ironstone on the left and cabinet on the right? It seems like that one small square piece on the left is making it off kilter. I Totally LOVE the look of all the plates on the wall though, great idea!

I totally get what you mean about the reasons for buying something. I often buy things to complete a ‘look’ and wonder if it’s really me.

    31. Jodi

Just realized I totally overused the word totally!lol. Totally unacceptable!

    32. Cheryl Johnson

      Lola Mae or Ruby Sue

    33. Jill Flory

I think it goes with the territory Marian! As a blogger/DIYer it is part of the business! I have been redesigning some things in my living room in my head – and it does revolve around some things we need for practicality but I’m also thinking about how it will photograph! Even if our homes were never in magazines, as bloggers we do our own photography and it’s nice if stuff is easy to photograph!
I love how your home has evolved and I love that you are getting better gear for videos! I follow you all the time even though I don’t have time to comment much anymore!

    34. Tavia

Your pretty neat Marian! You were fast in getting that white cabinet home and filled with ironstone lol! I reeeeeally love that piece!

    35. Janet

      Buttercup!!

    36. Lisa

She looks like a Trudy or Priscilla to me!!

    37. Teri

You may not think your boys care at all about how you decorate, but everything that is familiar in your house is what is “home” to them. I had to really temper my urge to constantly rearrange things because it seemed to matter to them. And my older son, who has a family now, wants all our old furniture that I am replacing.

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Yes, someone wisely pointed that out to me a couple of years ago. While I do move things around, there are a lot of fixtures in our home that stay the same and I have many family heirloom pieces that I won’t sell.

I grew up with a lot of change, since my dad was in the military and we moved a lot, but my mom was mindful of our need for stability in the way our rooms were set up and having things that were familiar around us. I think it gave me a sense of adventure, but I like to be grounded, too. Hopefully living in the same home, but switching around some furniture and paint and accessories will do the same for my boys!

    38. Maria (Magia Mia)

You’ve brought up a very important point, and one I keep prominent in my creative process. It is important for me to remain authentically “Me” in what I create, whether it’s crafting, painting, or writing. If I ever drift towards creating something trendy or wiith the goal of “getting noticed” by magazines, etc., the design process stops being fun, and suffers from trying to please others, rather than pleasing myself. It becomes contrived, rather than inspired. I appreciate you being open about it…:)

    39. Glo.

      Love your honesty.

    40. Kelly

Talula or Talula Belle… You definitely need a girl with some southern roots 🙂

    41. Judi

I love the older style names. My mom (sole survivor of 13 siblings & of German heritage) grew up on a dairy farm in Kansas.

      My suggestions:
      Dorothy or Dottie
      Luella
      Winifred
      Elta
      Minnie
      Dicke (surname)

    42. tricia @ little cottage on the pond

I like that you are keeping it real in terms of honesty and how evolving your business does in fact change how things are done. I struggle with that too, but on a much smaller level. Ultimately, your look is you, regardless of the reasons you choose what you do.

    43. Michelle

      Its as simple as this…………
you are who you are and that’s because of what you are doing in your day to day life. Your tastes will change as all our will. It can’t not change with all the thing you have going on. So if you pick up a bowl because it will photograph well, Well that’s ok because if you think about it you would have never given it a second looks if you didn’t like something about it to begin with.

I think you are doing an awesome job at being a real person/women/mom/wife in this blog world. Your doing what you love and that will only make you better In every aspect of your life.

When I read that there were no curtains I cracked up! That’s real! That’s why people relate to you so well. The first thing I thought of was shoot I have 3 windows in my bedroom right now. 2 that have brand new sexy blinds on them and one still has the old yellowed throw away paper one from the owners before us! It would be ok if it was a couple month but girl its been 2.5 years now! Lol. Seriously though that’s life. I’ll get to it! hahaha. I mean shoot we gutted the house and started fresh but I still have no trim either! That’s ok though I’ll get there too!

You keep doing what your doing because you are doing a fantastic job!! 🙂

    44. Shannon [Our Home Notebook]

Thanks for sharing what’s been on your heart. My guess is that it’s probably completely normal to think about how something will photograph in your home when you do it everyday. As long as that wish doesn’t over ride what you and your family love, then it’s not taking over what you buy, only adding another consideration to it. I think your home is beautiful and seems to have so much of you and your family in it. Thanks for making me think today too. It helps me so much to think about the why of things to refocusing and remind myself why I do what I do.

    45. Sue at Blu

Whether you shop for photos or comfort…you have a great eye and have developed the perfect sense of what works!

Funny you mention the “changes” of furniture, etc. and how children react. I find my younger children do not like change…they like things the way they are. My boys especially. The girls are more open to refreshing things. We are in a change mode right now so we will see how that goes!

I am looking for the perfect spot for the beautiful European grain sack you so graciously gave me at The Chapel Market. I must find the perfect spot! LOL!

    46. Wendy

      Here’s my favorites!
She looks like a BEULAH — goes well with Eulalie
Southern roots and biblical and the name of a beloved Aunt with whom I share a birthday–(April 1 also significant as April Fool’s day. ) A few years later we acquired a neice with the same birthday– April.
      other choices:
      BESSIE BELL

      MABELLE

      LULABELLE

BETSY– The name my Pennsylvania Dutch grandfather, born circa 1893- would call everyone of his cows

    47. Donna

Tallulah or Gertrude. Love your blog!

    48. Karen Wheeler

My friend’s little brother back in Maryland had a cow named High Arbor Lida. She was “High Arbor” because of the farm where she was raised, and “Lida” was her individual cow name. I think this is somehow material, though I’m not sure how. Does your house have a name?

    49. Nancy

Don’t every worry about why you are decorating a certain way or the decor you are choosing. Whether its because it photographs well or it is a functional item for you or your family you are still doing/purchasing something you love or that brings you joy regardless of the reason. You are focusing more on photography and video now so naturally you will start to see things thru the eyes of a photographer, everything around you is a potential photo shoot or still life! I just call that appreciating the things around you or how things can be used or viewed for their rusty charm or beauty that others take for granted. Just keep doing what you are doing because you are an inspiration for us all!!

    50. Wendy

Decorate your way. I love what you do, but YOU need to pick what speaks to YOU as you and your family.
What works today might not work for tomorrow. Legos disappear after a few years and electronics take up more space.
      Change is inevitable everywhere,

    51. Sherry

I love what you do Marion! I am totally with you on your colors too! The dental cabinet is awesome! And…..I love the design your working on for your tee shirts! Maybe you should create some fabrics with all those swirls and the flowers you paint on the furniture. I think they would be great sellers!

    52. Krist E

Well, Marion, I think your house looks wonderful and anyone who follows you knows that you don’t live in a fantasy world anymore than the rest of us. That’s just the way our brains work…if your a photographer you see everything as it would look through your view finder, if your are an Artist you see the world by colors and shapes and shadows or whatever your genre is and if you are a Hair Stylist you notice the slightest changes in peoples hairstyles, etc., I have worked in several different creative areas in my life and w/each one of them I have notice that’s how I tend to find myself seeing life around me. Anyway, your home is beautiful, comfortable and very livable and inspiring and we love it. You are so lucky to have a business that you can do what makes you happy on a daily basis and still be able to include that important/precious time with your loved ones! BTW LOVE LOVE, LOVE that Dental Cabinet and you are so right…it is perfect there!

    53. Carolyn

I think it’s great that you take time to step back and reflect on things. Your design choices have really been spot on and I really like your t-shirt design! bravo

    54. Krist E

ps…when you don’t have those feelings and inklings of retrospection, that’s when you need to become concerned that maybe you need to take a step back and reprioritize. I think I can speak for all your followers when I say that we are very happy for you that you are having such great success.

    55. Harriett

I love the dental cabinet even more filled! I tried to leave a comment for the green tinted Mason jar pendant on the Décor Steals website. I don’t think I could. Nothing matched 🙁

    56. tonya nagle

I love and appreciate your honesty Marion! It’s nice to hear some real thoughts about what your house is like to live in while it’s working so hard for you all! Keep the real life stuff (as it relates to your business – or anything else that seems pertinent to you) coming! It’s helpful on a personal and professional level 🙂

    57. Cindy K

Thank you for being so open and honest, sharing your thoughts and ideas and marvelous talent with all of us. I’m late to the party, having found your blog only a couple of months ago while looking for paint resources. Serendipitous! I look forward to your post each day, it’s like a letter from a friend.

The picture of Legos lining the furniture made me smile. My three boys are grown now, and their thousands of Lego pieces have now passed down to my granddaughters who spend hours playing with them with their dad. Memories aren’t only built with home furnishings.

      Shared Blessing!

    58. Cindy K

And, I’d like to suggest Serenity for the beautiful little lady’s name. She just embodies it, doesn’t she?

    59. Stephanie Colorado

To thine own self be true. Those of us who have attended your presentations have appreciated that you are who you present yourself to be. Don’t become someone trying to fit into someone else’s box.

      • Lonnie Harms

so agree with this Comment… Do what you love ”if you can”.. and your life will flourish indeed~~

    60. Peggy

…and everything does look great in the pictures!

    61. Heidi

I love your blog, you’re very inspiring! We all need our occasional reality checks and…do you get deliveries nearly everyday? We do…sadly? I love coming home to my new “presents” though! I need to be sure to give those folks a great big thank you this Christmas. Keep up the wonderful wonderful work!

    62. Siggie

Besides your lovely decorating style, your honesty is probably the main reason why I love reading your blog. I thouroughly enjoy your book and blog because you make it sound so possible for everyone and that is the greatest inspiration one can give and receive. Thanks for keeping it real once more!

    63. debbie craig

I love the blue and white, serene, comfy and not too casual at the same time. I have a question about the milk paint. I have a really old dining table that needs help. It is a really dark wood color, not sure what wood it is. I want to paint just the top to cover scratches and knicks. Any suggestions for a dark color that would coordinate, it’s a mahongy color you would say? The chairs are a black painted wood. The walls in the room are a pretty gray color. thank you..

i thought about your post all day and a couple thoughts come to mind. firstly, i was also a military kid and i grew into a woman all about her home, especially giving it a sense of history. even though i have moved many times in 40 yrs of marriage i treat each home as if it is
“the one” because i like that stability and feeling of permanence. so i think my past informs my choices somewhat. secondly, you, your business & your home have a relationship and like all relationships we have to decide how much power we are willing to give the other party. once that is settled a lot of the issues fall into place. maybe these thoughts will be helpful to you. enjoy your weekend.

Ok, I so loved this post. There are so many times when i’m fixing up my house or moving around furniture, and i realize… where are my kids…? ( who are grown, but not really) and why am i doing this? For them, for me? Pretty much for me, i think… The same with painting, who am i painting for, am i painting what people like, or what i want to paint. It’s pretty hard working full time, and then having only the weekend to be creative, and having so many ideas, and being on a limited budget. Although, there is a blessing in having a limited budget, it makes me more creative with my choices, which can make things more interesting. I can’t even imagine what it would be like having all the money in the world to fix up a home with… I don’t think I would even know how to decorate that way… Anyway, don’t mean to go on… but this post really touched at my heart, and addressed some of the things i think about too….

Love the “real pictures.” And I think most of us have that same “but I just cleaned that response.” My husband just walked into my freshly-scrubbed-top-to-bottom kitchen in his hunting boots. He was quickly “shooed” out as I reached for the dust pan. Have a great week of inspired happenings.

I do love your home, but think you should do what makes YOU and your family happy. I think you can do no wrong when it comes to decor, but the biggest reason for that is your human honesty, flaws and all. Keep on keeping on because you never cease to amaze me! Love ya Marian!

I think the fact that you have realized this is going in is huge! it gives you the power to consciously choose where you go with it from here. The Lord is enlightening your mind to help you make the best decisions. Such a good sign! And He just wants you to be happy, so do what makes your heart smile as you decide what goes in or out, here or there. If it’s a photographing season, and pretty pictures are making you happy, go with that. If you need something functional right then, go with that. You are so good at thinking thinks through with an eye towards keeping keeping harmony in all arenas of your life, that I never worry. I think you have a marked gift for that, dear lady.

I can relate to this. I find myself running out to the store to try to find one specific thing because “it would really make the picture”! I remember this dang offset spatula in particular. I NEEDED IT. But I couldn’t find one with a wooden handle. I couldn’t have a “tacky black handle” in my picture with my lemon bars! I ended up ordering one, paying 4 times as much as I should have for it, and then….the lemon bars turned out like crap and I never blogged about them. I’ve never used the spatula. I have to bring myself back to reality sometimes when I’m thinking about doing something just for the sake of blogging about it.

I can see how that would become a problem, and I’ve noticed it in a lot of blogs – people constantly rearranging things for the sake of a post. I guess it does come with the territory, especially the bigger your blog becomes and the more dependent on it for career purposes. That being said, I don’t think your home ever comes across as not “lived in”. It always looks cozy and beautiful, but the story behind the photograph comes through, without being photographed. If that makes sense….

hi there – I totally love everything you do, and all the stuff you have. I used to have an antique & resale shop, and still have some antique furniture that is beautiful wood. I’ve had it for years now, and have contemplated painting it. If I send u a pic of a dresser with a matching vanity, would u tell me if you would paint it?? I need some advise.
      thanx so much…..Wendy
