It’s time for another 10 minute decorating idea! I partner with a few other bloggers, once a month, to bring an idea you can complete in a few minutes…while dinner is on the stove or as the kids are playing happily.
I tend to work on projects that take a lot longer than 10 minutes, so it’s a challenge for me to think of something quick and simple. Sometimes all we have is 10 minutes, so it’s nice to have those ideas up our sleeves.
As I was thinking through what I had on hand and what project I could work on, I remembered a pack of moss I recently purchased for another project. I’ve always loved topiaries, so I decided to make teacup moss “topiaries”. And this is more of a 2 minute indoor plant decor idea than a 10 minute one! (You can keep the change.)
Don’t blink or you’ll miss how to do this.
Just stuff moss in a teacup. Literally.
You can leave it a little wild or shape it into more of a mound. I tried one of each.
It’s a simple and quick way to add a bit of greenery and life without any maintenance or commitment.
They are a nice accent to live plants…
…and can add some texture to a china hutch or cabinet.
I also like the idea of using them in a room that gets little or no light, like an interior bathroom.
I used a handle-less teacup for my indoor plant decor, but you could really use anything! Silver bowls, sugar jars, eggs cups, mustard crocks, terra cotta pots…whatever you have on hand.

Sometimes the most simple ideas make the very most impact. Cute idea!
So clever! Looks really nice. Where do you get moss like this? Is it dried, fresh, does it need to be watered?
i’m curious about this also…
Such a simple and cute way to add greenery to a room with poor natural lighting.
Great and simple idea. But more than that, your photos are amazing today! 🙂
Love this idea – perfect for the series and one I may just use!!
Simple. A ten-second project, really.
Thanks so much for that great idea! I have been shuffling a couple lenox candle cups around for a few months trying to decide what to do with them. This is perfect!
Keep the 10 minute idea segment! I love it. 🙂
Marian! Are you in your minivan driving down 95 south past Richmond??? We just blew by you!!!
LOL, yes, we were! We were headed to Raleigh to visit family and then go to the beach. Was I napping? 🙂
Hi, Marian. I have a question unrelated to 10-min. decorating. Where can I find info about purchasing ironstone? I have looked a lot on Ebay and have purchased a couple items there, but I’m never sure if the asking price is reasonable, a steal, or exorbitant for the piece. Do you have criteria that you use when purchasing? If there is a better way to contact you on your blog, let me know. I didn’t find any “contact” information. Thanks.
yeah, I actually wrote a post all about it… https://missmustardseed.com/2014/06/ironstone-201/
Love this moss! Have never seen this. Is it available at garden centers?
what a sassy, simple idea. I have plenty of “inherited” stunning cups & saucers ….off to get the moss today.I know what gift everyone will be getting from me! thanks for such creative ideas & beautiful photos.
Love this new “10 minute” idea for your blog. Will you be doing more of these from time to time?
That’s a cute idea, but like several others asked, where do you find the moss? I’m assuming it’s faux moss, not a living plant as you mentioned it being good in low-light spots. Would places like Michael’s or JoAnn’s have it? I’d really like to try it in a couple spots where live plants don’t do well. And I think if you don’t count the shopping, or interruptions to let the dog out, I could do it in five minutes! Thanks for the idea, Marian!
Actually, Kriste picked it up for me, I think from JoAnn’s. It is real moss, but it’s preserved.
Ok, thanks. I’m gonna look for it.
