Back to Megan’s office makeover… In case you missed part 1, you can find it HERE.
Right away, we started talking about what she had in the space and in her basement stash that we could use an repurpose. There’s no sense in buying something new when you can shop your own house!
Since this is an office, the desk chair is an important piece of furniture. I asked Megan how she felt about her current chair. Did she love it? Was it comfortable? She isn’t particularly fond of the chair, so we started talking about what she would like.

She revealed that she had a chair that she loved, but the base of it broke. I decided it was worth taking a look at, to see if we might be able to fix it. Unfortunately, it was broken beyond repair. Two of the casters were stripped, so they wouldn’t stay in place, and the mechanism that allows the chair to recline slightly wasn’t functioning properly. (It was hard to get this chair to even “stand up” for the pictures! I had to have a firm discussion with it.)

I noticed another desk chair in her basement, though. This one wasn’t as pretty and the foam on the arms have been picked apart by her two boys. BUT, the base of the chair was in perfect condition.

You might see where I’m going with this.
Why not take the base of the maroon chair with the chewed-up arms and stick it on the white Pottery Barn chair?
So, that’s exactly what we did. It was a pretty simple process, but here’s a quick video tutorial breaking it down into steps…
I’ve been affectionately referring to it as the “franken-chair”. Both Kriste and I took a literal spin in it and wheeled around a bit to make sure it was stable and sturdy.
You’ll be glad to know that it passed our very scientific series of tests.
I didn’t mention this in the video, but I think the key is making sure the base of the chair is positioned properly, so it is balanced and doesn’t fall forward or backward when someone sits in it. Our scientific testing confirmed the base was placed properly.
The chair isn’t finished, yet, though! It still needs a slipcover. Can you guess what we might be repurposing in the room to make one?
The plan for the room is evolving as Megan has had a chance to digest some of our ideas.
You can see my plan for the space in part three…

Love this! 🙂
Loved the deets and laughter in the video! Thanks! Can’t wait for the reveal
Love where you’re going with this!
Great idea. Most people would have thrown out both chairs. Thanks for showing us how to fix things. This reveal is going to be awesome.
Something about seeing you spin around in that chair,
so fun, so fresh, so full of life! Love this new direction!
Switching out the chair bases was a great idea.
So sad your friday share is gone 🙁 It was always fun to see what others posted and it was a great way to get a tiny trickle of traffic to my site when I posted something good.
The chair swap was a winner! I think the drapes may be getting a new purpose.
Oh, how I LOVE this post. I like the white chair and as a ‘re-user’ of everything with still an inch of life in it, I fully approve and congratulate you on making a ‘new’ chair from the ‘eaten up boys toy’ into a nice and perfect ‘new chair’. I probably would think of using a ‘spare?’ curtain for the slip cover but you might find a ‘sack’ somewhere – it would go very well with Megan’s lovely room. 🙂
That was so clever! Now she will have a pretty, comfortable and functional desk chair!

I love love love what you did with the Franken-chair! That thing is way too pretty not to be used! ps you should have shared a reel of your scientific tests! I would have loved to see that!
There is actually a clip of me rolling and twirling in the chair at the end of the video above. 🙂
