Ironstone & an Ektorp Sofa Review

I mentioned I got a new haul of ironstone last week.  Well, here it is…

Not only is it a lot of ironstone, but a lot of really great pieces including this four piece tureen set with platter, lid and ladle.

The details on the handles are really pretty.  I love this piece, but I already have a few tureens, so I’ll be selling it.

Another stunning piece is this large compote.  It’s chippy, but I’m cool with that.

…some sugar jars…

…lidded casseroles, a couple of butter dishes, butter pats, pitchers, small plates…

…platters…

…and a huge footed bowl (behind the pitcher.)  Lots of ironstone goodness.  I need to figure out what I want to keep and put a collection together to sell.  I will list some in my online shop, but let me know if there’s something you’re interested in.  I am a little nervous about shipping ironstone, but I’m willing to give it a try.

In my post about getting a new sofa, several people asked if I would recommend the Ikea Ektorp sofa since I’ve used it for nine years.  The simple answer…yes.  The sofa was $300 when I bought it and I’ve also bought four white twill slipcovers along the way at $50/each.

I removed all of the slips and washed them today for it to be picked up by the new owners.  Here’s how it looks without the covers…

These are the pros to the Ektorp –

  • It’s an inexpensive sofa, making it budget-friendly.  It does get more expensive when you get into the colored covers, though.
  • For an inexpensive sofa, it’s held up very well.  We’ve had teenagers wrestling on it for years as well as our boys as they’ve grown.
  • The slipcovers wash well and look nice.  The quality has greatly improved since the first one I owned.  The slips are still tight after a wash, but they used to rip and tear when I tried to put them on and the zippers would always break.  Now they are much nicer.
  • I loved that I could wash out a stain or spill or grunge.
  • I think it’s comfortable.  I say it that way, because my husband didn’t think so.  It does take a while for the cushions to wear in, so it feels hard at first.  I sit with my feet curled up under me, though, and he sits with his feet propped up, so that might make a difference.
  • It’s versatile, neutral and fits a variety of styles.  Even after nine years, it still looks current.  Even with all of my changes and shuffling, it still works.

…and the cons –

  • The cushions aren’t attached, so they slide out a few inches after “movie night” or a lot of lounging.
  • The slipcovers aren’t super easy to get off and on.  When we didn’t have kids, I only had to wash them about 3-4 times/year, so that was fine.  With kids, though, they have to be washed once a month at the very least and that’s a pain.
  • After years of stuffing the cushions into covers, The foam has started to pull apart.  I was planning to fix them with some spray adhesive and new batting.

So, I think it’s a great sofa for the price and I would recommend it.

Today I had to get out of the house for some errands and Christmas shopping.  And I packed up all of the German glass glitter orders and some “secret Santa” gifts…

…tis the season.

M – I am interested in any ironstone you’d like to sell. I love these pieces. I’m interested in the small plates, tureen, pitchers (collect these like mad), sugars, and lidded dishes.

    2. Denise Shideler

I live in Winchester VA and can drive up and pick them up so no shipping involved.

    3. Brenda

Hi Marian, you talk about your online store, but all I ever see under shop, is tshirts , your book and now some glitter….am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks.

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Yes, that’s the right place. I just haven’t added antiques, yet.

    4. Cathy

I agree! I am interested in any ironstone you are selling!

    5. Kathy Kuta

Very interested in the four piece tureen set! And I too, don’t know where to find your online store. Etsy?

    6. Yuko @ northfield gate

I’m drooling all over your new ironstone collection! They are so very pretty!

    7. Dawn

I too would purchase. I would buy it right now if I knew how. Where will this be located/listed. I’m in need before christmas

    8. Jenelle

I would be interested in the butter dishes, butter pats and small plates.

    9. Irene

Yay, my glitter is on its way! Very interested in your ironstone. Would prefer near perfect pieces. Please let me know how you’ll do this. Hoping to get lucky.

    10. Heidi @ Rustic Barnyard

I’m glad you did a review on the sofa. I’ve eyed them up for awhile. Our current set that I slip covered a couple years ago are ready for new slips and the cost of fabric is almost worthy of new sofas. That’s only because I want to upgrade from the drop cloth fabric i used last time. THanks!

      • Sharon

Buy your fabrics on EBAY !!! I used to have an eBay store and I bought and sold all the best designer fabrics. They were and most still are dirt cheap if you buy in lg qty’s of 10, 12, 15, 20 yds. I used to know all the big regular sellers but it’s been years since I closed my store. FabricGuru is a good one and he also has a website…FabricGuru.com. Prices are unbelievably reasonable.

    11. Kimberly Bruhn

Hey Marion. I’ve been wondering…how do you identify “ironstone?”

      • Patricia

        Thought I’d answer this one!
        Definition of IRONSTONE CHINA

: a hard heavy durable white pottery developed in England early in the 19th century

    12. kristin

I love my Ektorp Sofa! I was so lucky to stop into Ikea and find mine on clearance for 249.00 with a PINK slip cover!
Hope you have a pretty Christmas!
      Kristin

    13. Marilyn

I’m interested in the compote and/or the soup tureen set. Also, I’ve been wondering for quite sometime now – do you personally use ironstone for food or just for decorating with? Just curious if it’s food safe.

    14. cathgrace

My family has had the ektorp sectional for about 10 years and we still love it! I have had a cream corduroy slipcover, the red twill slipcover, and now the navy velvet one (depending on the room it is in at any given moment) and it has stood up to SO much wear and tear. My kids even broke an arm once, and I just split the non-woven fabric open, reinforced the arm with a piece of pegboard, screws, and wood glue, and sewed it shut, it’s as good as new! It has made 3 military moves, (including one to South Korea.) Whenever this one wears out, we will definitely be getting another one!

    15. Jodi

I’m interested in the large footed bowl if you plan to sell it! I get a lot of my ironstone on ebay and have never had a broken piece (*knock wood*) but they go crazy with bubble wrap and styrofoam peanuts. I appreciate it every time!

    16. Susie

Ironstone love, what beautiful pieces. Please add me to the list if you decide to sell. Others are in front of me for a few, but would love to be next in line for the large footed bowl, the small round 2 piece covered dish sitting on the stack of platters, the compote and the egg cups, it looks like you have 4. You can ship or I can drive, I live in Frederick, what ever suits best, thanks.

    17. liz meyer

So what was the new sofa that you bought? I read the blog about it the other day but did not know which one you had replaced it with. We are in the market for a new one and I am going to be very picky about buying a new one and would love some input. It needs to be so comfy and durable (13 yr old twin boys) the top where my head would go cannot be too puffy, it makes my neck hurt. It should be comfortable to lay down on including the arm, not to puffy not too hard. I know, I am so picky but after 20 yrs of making bad sofa choices I need this one last chance to get it right!!!

    18. Pam

Hello – I love ironstone and would be interested in the compote.
      Great pieces!

    19. Katy

      Looks great!
We considered an Ikea sofa many times over. I would have spent extra to get a slipcovered sofa from PB or Ballard Design, but the price of new slips is like buying a new sofa. Thanks for the review it is back on the table for us.

    20. elisabeth

What’s the story on your current dining room table? it’s my favorite one yet and exactly what I want! Did you paint/stain it or is that how it came? I’d love some more info. Oh and thanks for the Ektorp recomment, I’ve been thinking of getting one for a while.

    21. Gina

LOVE THE IRONSTONE!!! I would be seriously interested in any pieces you would be selling.. I know that UPS is a shipping wonder for fragile items. As for a sofa.. I have a MG sectional.. I waited until it was on sale ( and saved my pennies) and bought a canvas slipcover.. It is durable and very comfortable .. I have been told that there is a website that buys “overstock” PB covers and sells them at very reduced rates..
Wishing you a blessed holiday from snowing upstate New York..

    22. Nikki

I would love to have the footed bowl and the little square plates!

    23. Melody Toman

Hi Marian! I would also love any of your ironstone – especially a lidded casserole dish or 2. I had no idea what ironstone was until I bought & read your book! I have whilte stoneware dishes so that I can decorate for any season. I want to thank you for inspiring me, as I’ve made some decorating mistakes in the past and was scared to make any decisions. A year ago we downsized to a much smaller house (a dark ranch), so now I have a different ‘opportunity’ before me. My home is a haven and my goal is to have it reflect peace & joy that the world does not give. I would love for you to post about decorating in small spaces. What a challenge compared to my previous house! Many Blessings to you & Merry Christmas! Love, Melody

    24. Marty Cotton

Marian-what an amazing haul!! I am extremely interested in the tureen set as well as a sugar bowl!! Thanks !!!

    25. teri

I am very interested in any of the Ironstone you would be willing to sell. I have been waiting for the day to see it listed… I love the chippy tureen, butter pats, sugar bowls. Let me know.
I have had many fragile pieces shipped to me — you can do it!!

    26. kirby carespodi

Marian–Like everyone else on the planet, I am also interested in the ironstone. My mother had a wonderful collection, but lost it in a house fire some years ago. I’m interested in finding a few pieces for her–a variety. My mother-in-law is in central PA, so I could pick it up at a pre-arranged location, if you like.

    27. Bea

We bought an Ektorp and a Pottery Barn Basic Sofa 10 years ago. We put one in the living room and the other in the family room. Five years later we moved, and because of the colors, we had to switch. So after 10 years each sofa has had 5 years of heavy use, and five years of light use. The Ektorp is still in excellent condition and with the new linen slipcover, looks really great. The Pottery Barn Basic needs new back cushions badly– looking quite sad, but the micro suede slipcovers have held up like iron. Just some extra info if you are considering a new sofa.

    28. Amber

Is it bad that I’ve never heard of ironstone? I love the pieces you have though, gorgeous! And thanks for the Ektorp sofa review! I am considering getting the love seat sofa bed for the nursery since we still need a guest bed for Grandma’s and Grandpa’s!

    29. Tammy @ A Walk in the Countryside

I LOVE your ironstone! I very rarely run across any in our neck of the woods but if I do, and the price is right, I snatch it up! Thanks so much for your sofa review! I’ve been reading different ones online and just yesterday, took the plunge and ordered one! Hopefully before Christmas, our new sofa will be in the sunroom! Blessings, Tammy

    30. Shari

Really interested in lidded bowl sitting on two platters in next to last ironstone pic!! Will you be selling that one? I have a collection of almost 100 pieces, but not one like that! Plus any egg cups you would part with. Thanks! Shari

    31. Loribeth

Are those egg cups for soft boiled eggs? I might be interested in those.

You’ve made me wish I had a place to display my ironstone. I have a really nice soup tureen that I’ve had in storage for years. Jim wants me to get rid of it, but I know someday we’ll have a larger home where I can use it and display it.

    32. BrocanteuseRose

Beautiful Ironstone pieces! I was fighting the urge to start collecting it as I already have quite a few different collections going on already, but this post just swayed me over the edge. My finacee thanks you. 🙂

    33. Deborah Smith

I’m sitting here looking at a duplicate of your lidded sugar jar that is in pics 4 & 5–the creamy colored one. It was my great grandmother’s that was part of my mother’s treasures. It’s my favorite piece I display. Lots of memories! Thanks so much for sharing.

    34. Ronda Zalenski

      Hi,
I was wondering when you will have more German Glass Glitter to sell. I keep checking but it always says sold out on your shop.
      Thanks!

    35. Marty Cotton

I’m so excited! Have you listed anything yet???? How will you go about selling these ironstone pieces?

    36. Patti Gencarelli

      I love your ironstone pieces.
In the first photograph, to the right
there is a tall pieces with out a lid
      (footed piece to be exact).
      Is that for sale?
Also, I have been looking to see
if you would have some more glitter in
and haven’t seen it back in stock.
      Is that possible to order?
      Thanks so much. You can
      email me at aguhmom2@aol.com

    37. elma

I am interested in a sugar with lid and some butter pats the soup where will you be listing these?

    38. Toni ehle

I would love the pitcher with the scalloped edges. It would be my very first piece of ironstone as I’m just getting started with it.

    39. Jelena

I love those ironstone pieces! Actually, the first two that caught my eye even before I read the post were the tureen and compote. 🙂

Yes, I would be nervous about shipping larger pieces like that, too. If you decide to sell any ironstone pitchers and smaller bowls though, I would love to take a look at them. I am in the market for some, as well as one or two larger platters in good condition that could still be used on a weekly basis (not just for decor).

    40. Winnie

Marian ~ I hope you won’t mind if I add my 2 cents to your “Ektorp”sofa review. I have had mine for almost a year now, and it continues to be a very hard surface to sit on. The seats are too shallow for comfort, due to the back cushions being so deep. The slipcover is a very nice quality fabric and appears to be quite well-made. I believe it will last a long time. If only I felt comfortable sitting down!

    41. Terry

Oh be still my heart! I am interested in purchasing the pedestal non lidded ironstone bowl shown in the first and closer in the 4th picture. Please let me buy!

    42. Rebecca Brovont

Try this hint for putting just washed and dried slipcovers back on with a little more ease. Partially dry them and put them on damp. If you air dry them to the slightly damp stage on the line after a brief fluff in the dryer it is even better.

    43. Helen Williams

Thanks for the review on the Ektorp sofa! We are in the planning stages of getting a townhome in FL, as a second residence. I don’t want to spend a lot of money decorating it. In fact, I plan on purchasing a lot of used and old furniture and painting the pieces. I will be heading to the local Ikea when we’re ready to get one or two of their sofas.

    44. Melissa Adams

I want the “chippy” compote!!!! email me if it’s available for sale!

    45. Tania Russell

I’m looking to start a collection of ironstone, so I would most definitely be interested in some of the ironstone! Can you please let us/me know when you list them online? Thanks! 🙂

    46. Cindy Brown

I have had the IKEA Ectorp sofa and loveseat for about 8 to 9 years now and love them. I don’t have the problem with the cushions slipping at all. I have purchased the red covers that I use during the holidays but purchased the set with tan covers. They wash great and I am planning on purchasing the white set this spring. You can’ t beat the price!

    47. Sandra

Silly question…..where did you get the red and white twine you wrapped gifts with? I would love some……

    48. Marisa Franca

Oh boy Marion!! Looks like you may have to do an auction for the ironstone. They very pretty and I would love to have the four piece tureen but from the interest I don’t think I have a chance 🙁

    49. Nancy

I purchased an Ironstone soup tureen on Etsy (with ladle) and not only was the ladle broken to pieces, the base of the tureen was broken…it totally surprised me because the gal wrapped the stuff so well with bubble wrap, lots of paper in the box, etc. The only thing I could think of was there was no “Fragile” written on the box; luckily I took a pic and sent it to her; got my money refunded but was sad because it was such a great looking piece!

    50. Stephanie

I have two Ikea sofas and have had them for 4 years they still look great to me! I bought the offwhite (can’t remember the color but not bright white)
Tip for the buyer put the slips back on when they are slightly damp they stretch easier. Then just leave the vented a little to finish drying on the cushion. Also, rotate cushions it keeps the wear even.

    51. Cindy

Wow! What a haul of gorgeous ironstone…. and lord have mercy you are putting that new camera to good use, those photos are stunning! You are great at the whole photography/staging thing! It’s also cool to hear your review on the Ectorp sofa. Sounds to me like it was alot of bang for the buck, and it has looked so pretty in your house. Can’t wait to see the new sofa though… exciting!

      Cindy

    52. Louise

I, too, would love to have that four piece tureen set. Please let us know when you list the ironstone. Thank you. Wishing you a joyous Christmas.

      • Jennifer Howard

I just started an ironstone collection and would be overjoyed to purchase one or any of them.
        Blessings

        • Lorraine Nolte

          Hi ,

I love the footed ironstone bowl. Please let me know when you are ready to sell it.Have a wonderful Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

    53. Jan

Is that an invalid feeder I see in that beautiful collection of iron stone? You may already know that it is the oval piece with the long spout. Would love to have it if you decide to sell it! I live way out here in Washington state but would still like to take the chance it would get here in one piece!

    54. Linda Leyble

Hi Marian…After many years of collecting Quimper plates and dinnerware (the French plates depicting peasant life in Normandy), I decided to take a tip from you and get some ironstone. I was in a thrift shop not too long ago and I saw what looked like ironstone – but I wasn’t sure. So, I took out my iphone and looked up your blog post about it – and it helped so much. It was almost like having you there! I was able to get 8 dessert plates and a creamer – for very little money. So, thanks for your postings – and the link you provided for more info.

The ironstone you posted today looks so gorgeous! Makes me want more!

      Linda

    55. Paula Carli

Hi Maria: I am interested in the rectangle platter and a sugar bowl if still available Please let me now, I am a long time lover of ironstone!!

    56. Marnie

Hi, Love your posts. My daughter had the same Ektorp as yours, bought around 9 years ago.
It was great but Ikea has changed suppliers for the Ektorp and the last one she bought about two years ago was really uncomfortable. She returned it and was told they get a lot of returns since the change in suppliers, not sure if they have fixed this recently.

    57. cheryl liberty

Ohh, what a haul. If louise does not take the tureen set, i would be interested and also the footed compote or large footed bowl. thank you. cheryl

    58. Ellen

      Marion,
Thanks for offering to sell some of the ironstone. I would love any of the sugar bowls or pitchers.

    59. Sarah Wilby

Marian – what a great collection of ironstone!! Such beautiful pieces! I am interested in the large chippy tureen, the round covered casserole in the second to last picture and a few of the small square plates and butter pats. If you are going to sell any of these, Please!! let me know – thanks and Merry Christmas!

    60. Rosalina

I’ve been collecting ironstone for lots of years. I’ve always loved it. Have a small collection, maybe 15 pieces. Didn’t know others also collected it until I saw an article in Martha Stewart’s mag. She had a solid wall of it, must have been a good 300 pieces or it looked that way. All the pieces I’ve bought at yard sales, estate sales or thrift shops, I think the most I ever paid for a piece is $3.00 – $10.00. I love the four piece tureen. But I know with all the others wanting it, it’ll go high, but love it. Thank you for your daily blogs and insight and for being such a “real” person. May the new year continue to bring you success and growth. May God’s blessings continue to be on you and all of your family.

    61. Janice Davis

      Marian,

I love ironstone SO much! I found my first piece at the thrift store several years ago. I would like to start a collection of soup tureens, but I only have one so far. I’m absolutely in love with the one you have, especially since it has the platter and ladle. But I’m sure that my budget won’t allow me to purchase it, but I can view it from afar. LOL Thank you for showing us your lovely collection. Christmas blessings to you and to those you love ~ Janice

    62. Ellen

Help! I see one of the sugar bowls in your “shop”, but can’t figure out how to check-out after I put it in my cart.

    63. Kerry

      Hi Marian,

I love the Ironstone. Particularly, the tureen. The details are stunning. What a nice centerpiece that would be at the holidays with some Cream of Broccoli Soup and crusty bread, Yum!

    64. Susan

      Hi Marian,
Love your posts!! I am definitely interested in the turreen but anything that you decide to sell, I want to hear about. Love Ironstone!!

Thanks and Merry Merry Christmas to you and your family!
      Susan

    65. Nanci Hargis

The butter pats are to die for!! would love some of thoes if you ever want to part ways!!
Love the little dishes they are sitting in too.
      THanks
      Nanci

    66. Andrea

Oh how I love ironstone. I am interested in the butter pats…I collect them, but these look square…I don’t have any of those! I also would love to purchase the compote or footed bowl…….if they aren’t already spoken for.

I also need an Ektorp sofa….it’s just a bit of a drive for me!

      Andrea

    67. Karen Renfroe

I Jane a problem and I would love your help. I want to slipcover (have one made) and I’d like to know what you think would be the best, least expensive fabric. Someone said twill, but would that be bottom weight? I want it in a dark khaki color because my dog and I spend a lot of time on the sofa. I was thinking about navy or denim blue piping. Please give me your advice, especially about the best type of fabric…I’ve even thought of duck fabric. Thanks, Karen renfroe

    68. Grisel Levene

Wow, things just sell way too fast! This is a good problem for you to have! I would love to buy some butter pats–so cute! Maybe next time :+)

    69. Marty Philpot

Marian, I am drooling!!!! I had several pieces of antique white ironstone, and, inspired by your collection, I replaced all the other china in my Welsh cupboard with more white ironstone. It is absolutely yummy! The one piece I’ve yet to find is a compote…..I would love to have one and put a preserved boxwood ball in it for most of the year, replacing it with a great old salmon colored mercury ball at Christmas time. If you decide to sell one of them, please put me in line as a buyer! Thanks so much!

    70. Barbara Smith

I would love the ironstone pitchers!

    71. Linda

      Hi Marian,
I’d love to start a little ironstone collection–and am learning how to recognize it. I spy a pitcher (squared) that would be great to begin with. If that’s “taken” there’s another pitcher that’s my second choice. Thanks for all you do!

    72. Carole Crandall

      Marian,

Where do you find all this wonderful ironstone. I never seem to find any here in North Carolina (Raleigh/Cary area). I have a small collection, and would love to add to it.

      Happy Holidays!

    73. Terri Lawrence

      Hi Marian,

I just started collecting and I am very interested in any of your beautiful pieces!

      Happy Holidays!

    74. MaryEtta

I had an Ektorp for 10 years. My daughter took it when she got married and moved into her own house. I replaced it with a much more expensive sofa. 3 years later I gave that one away and bought 2 more Ektorps! I love them!:)

    75. Wandalee

oh foot,,,,I missed the iron stone. My job keeps getting in the way of my collecting!

    76. Cyndy

Reading these comments after today’s posts. I am new to your blog, interested in the ironstone but don’t know how to get to you online shop. ??

    77. Jenn

I just made cushion covers for my sofa to replace the horribly worn out leather ones. while working on it, my Mother-in-law gave a tip for putting the covers on easily: slide a large garbage bag over the cushion with the opening toward the back. Then the cover slips easily over the bag and cushion and you pull the bag out the zipper opening. Easy peasy!

    78. Joanie Ellis

      Hi Marian,

I have been looking for a compote, love that one you posted, and sugar bowls. I would
really love buying those……….I would be so excited if I could get one…………….I had just won an auction on ebay for a platter that is rectangle, but I was so disappointed when it came all in pieces, so I have been looking for another to replace it, like the one you have. That one would be awesome. So many pretty pieces……you really are blessed to live near so many great opportunities to find so many unique pieces of ironstone, not to mentioned all the pretty legged furniture you find!!!! I’m a little envious. I live in California now where the styles seem to differ and I’m originally from New England where there is SO much history and great finds!! Have a great day and I will be looking on your shop to see if I can get lucky!

    79. Katherines Corner

Lovely treasures. Tis the season in deed. Happy holiday wishes!

    80. Roxy

I bought my Ektorp sofas about a year ago and had no prob with the cushions sliping. They have put some kind of grippers on them now. Also if you only dry the covers to about 70%ish you can put them on no prob. 🙂

    81. Claudine

Oh, Marian!!! I would love the butter dish??? Is that a butter dish?
You got me hooked on ironstone… I have a collection, but my pieces are not stunning like yours.
Took two gravy boats to my shop today and sold one.
How about prices??? They are hard to find, but not exactly expensive.
I have a hard time pricing them.
If you are selling, I would love to know about the butter dish.
      Hugs

I’m interested in the lidded, double handled ironstone piece found on the 5th and 7th(far left) pages. It more of a rectangular piece. I’d love to have any detailed salt or butter dishes as well.

Love hearing your thoughts on the Ektorp – we bought one two year ago and for the price we love it too! Although I think we’re about ready for a new set of slipcovers (comes with having two littles). But the fact that I can wash it and easily get new covers? Love.

        Hello!

I am thinking about purchasing the Ektorp. Could you tell me if you purchased the $399 model or the $599? I can’t seem to figure out the difference between the two. I really like the white. How is yours holding up? Thanks!

The difference between the two might be the slipcover? But I’m not sure…there was only the $399 version when I bought mine. It held up really well for about 8-9 years and we passed it along to a young couple who are still using it. I think that’s pretty good for such a cheap sofa. We bought a new white slipcover for it about every 2 years.

      Marian,

I am very impressed with the red and green plaid fabric you showed to wrap your German glass glitter. Can you tell me where you got the fabric please? I also love seeing your white ironstone ware, as well as reading Miss Mustard blog each day . Thank you for sharing

I love all of it – the 4 piece tureen set is off the charts. I’ll wait to see what you put online and will make a decision then. I love those little butter pats and the small plates they are sitting on AND the pieces that are more “square” than rounded. Not sure how better to describe them. I have a few pieces but it would always be nice to have a few more….:)

Love, love, love all of the ironstone. It you decide to part with any of the sugar bowls, I would be interested! Please, let me know. Thanks so much, Kenda

I would love the tureen, the casserole and the footed compote.
