Sutton Place Designs & a Frosty Fern

One of the amazing things about this blog world is getting to know gifted, talented, awesome entrepreneurs.  Not only have I gotten to know some of them, but I’ve had the privilege of partnering with some of them.  One of those ladies is Ann of Sutton Place Designs.  I got to know her a few years ago when she introduced herself through e-mail and then sent me two big boxes of “samples”.  Pillows, runners, stockings…everything was so pretty and I was sold on working with her.  That has materialized in a lot of ways.  I’ve bought things from her to sell at Lucketts, I’ve sent her fabric I wasn’t going to use, she has sponsored my blog and she has sent me goodies now and then.

Well, I just got some more goodies from her…

I saved every little scrap of grain sack fabric from my sewing projects and sent them to her to make mini stockings for me.  I now have 24, so I can make an advent calendar with them next year.

…and I wanted a grain sack apron to match the beautiful one’s Maria (another talented lady I’ve partnered with) had her models wear when shooting my MMSMP products…

…so I found a grain sack with my first and middle initials on it and Ann made one custom fit for me.

She even made some sweet ornaments with some of my scraps and some of mangle cloth from her own stash.

I’ve been saving all of the scraps from my recent upholstery work for her.  I know she’ll put them to good use!

This isn’t a paid feature post or anything.  She’s generous to me and I want to be generous to her and give her lots of link love.  You can tour Ann’s beautiful home HERE, get to know her on her blog HERE or shop her Etsy shop HERE.

I think it’s been well documented on this blog that I don’t do well with plants.  They come to my house for a slow death.  Well, I know that and I still put these sweet “frosty ferns” in my cart at the grocery store.

To my three little frosty ferns…I apologize in advance.

  1. Teehee I bought the same ferns to put in a Wardian case and they are thriving! Gods luck and Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  2. Help, Miss Mustard Seed and Faithful Readers! I ordered an antique silver tray from Pottery Barn for my dearest friend for Christmas. It was just the perfect gift for her. Alas, when it arrived on Saturday the monogram was off-center. Pottery Barn graciously agreed to a return on the item (no questions asked) but it is backordered until February. I need a great gift and I have very little time to shop for it. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’d like to keep it less than $40–and I’ve already given her Miss Mustard Seed’s book. Input, please. And thanks in advance for your help!

  3. Hi Miss M. Re your ferns, re-pot them with miracle grow potting soil, it is the best. Usually those little plants are pot bound or close to it when you purchase them. Get the soil wet and let ii sit awhile before you pot up. Then water thoroughly and leave them alone until the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry again. You can mist them lightly in between. Most plants die from over watering. Use your index finger to determine when to water, both dry and over watered plants show signs of wilting….hope this helps.

  4. Why not just buy an antique tray at a local antiques store and have it personalized? We have a local trophy shop who can also do trays, etc. I would think something like that should be able to be completed before next week.

  5. Thanks, Lorinda, for the suggestion. I should have mentioned that I am in a very rural area–nearest antique store is 50 miles away. I really need to find something on etsy or some other vendor. This wouldn’t be such a big deal but she’s been my best friend all my life and her gift to me this year was handmade. Bummer.

  6. Pam, I have a vintage shop on Etsy (www.copperandtin.com) and I’m still shipping for Christmas. Please take a look and see if there is something that would be a good gift for your friend. Cheers!

  7. Oh, those ferns are so pretty! Hope they prove you wrong and survive way beyond Christmas.

I will also have to check Ann’s shop and blog out when I have a moment. Looks like she has some pretty things…

  8. Those decorations are so cute. They would be great additions to a package. You are right about the ladies who I’ve “met” in bloggerland seem so genuine and generous. I feel as if I know all of them. They, and you especially, are role models for how we should treat each other.

  9. I also love Ann Sutton and her beautiful home, ideas and handcrafted products. I have ordered from her and just love her quality and the beauty and class of her items. Merry Christmas!

  10. Love the little ‘ferns’. Though it’s been many years since I’ve worked in the plant trade, my first thought was, “that’s not a fern, it’s a Selaginella!”..Selaginella is a club moss, which is a ‘moss like” plant ( best not to get into botanical definitions that I don’t even understand!). I googled and I was right! It has to stay moist at all times but should never be standing in water. My past experience tells me that if the soil dries out, even for a moment. this plant is a goner. It also needs high humidity, so putting on a saucer filled with stones and water, along with frequent misting, will keep this plant happy. All in all, not a particularly easy plant to keep, even for a die hard plant lover like me. Pretty while it lasts!

  11. oooh, i LOVE those little mini stockings. Its great to find things to use all those great scraps of fabric. I am also in love with your apron, and now I want one, but I would be too afraid to paint in it and ruin it!!

  12. My suggestion to keep your plants alive is to involve one of your boys. I have a son who loves to earn money towards his hobbies, so he’s always asking me for paying jobs. Watering plants definitely classifies around here. Teach him how to check with his finger if they need water and show him how much to water. He’ll be sure to keep his income source alive! Who knows, it might turn into a horticultural career.

  13. I love, love, love, your style and everything you do! I dream about my own home looking similar to yours someday. Can you tell us where you buy all your grain sack fabric? I’m having a hard time finding anything similar where I live. Thanks so much and Merry Christmas to you and your awesome family 🙂

  14. I just love the generosity of fellow bloggers…I see so much of “pay it forward” …Ann is a gem and so very talented…love the goodies she sent you and I am sure she loves the things you send her too….such a sharing of “love”…

  15. My frosty fern lasted about a year, and it drank a ton of water! It wilts when it needs water which was like every other day. I have repotted it several times. Right now it is pretty crispy with a few green spots – trying to revive it.

  16. Here’s a thought for the frosty ferns: enjoy for Christmas and then give them away to a good friend with a green thumb! The lovelies from Ann are perfect.

  17. That made me laugh out loud – at least you apologize to them before they die! I KNOW, fresh green plants are so yummy… and then as they slowly die they just make me feel guilty!
Those little stockings are just darling! and love the apron! It’s so cool that you have one with your initials!
and you know Marian, it is just so freakin amazing how you take the time and thought to share other people’s creations… I don’t even know how to thank you for what you have done for me by showing my work on your blog. Every time i see one of my paintings in a feature i am touched, and i know that many times you do it on purpose, because you know it gives me exposure. Sooooo… i’m just saying, … you’re amazing, and you know i thank you each time i get a call for a print, and a sweet complement from someone.

and now i’m gonna go check out your friend’s site! Her work is adorable!

  18. If you want some green in your home but need it as an easy to care for plant, try a jade plant. I have had one for several years now. It is a slow growing but always looks great. I only water it twice a month and it still looks great! A “mother in law’s tongue” plant is also easy to care for and looks good. Take it from me, not a green thumb, these are good plants to have and grow.

This week started with the loss of power from a storm.  It wasn’t really the storm that knocked out the power, but the wall of wind that came right before the rain.  It took out trees, limbs, power poles, and made a general mess of our yard and pool.  Jeff
