Jewelry for Dressers

One of the fun parts about giving a dresser a makeover is accessorizing it with pretty knobs.  Think of hardware as the jewelry for dressers; a way to complete the look and take it to the next level.  When I first started refinishing furniture, I was partial to clear glass knobs.  I bought a huge lot of them on eBay and put them on everything.  In recent years, though, I’ve started to branch out into metallics, colored glass, ceramic, wood, tortoise shell, clay…many different materials and finishes.  Often when I’m working on a piece, I’ll try several knobs to see which one makes the piece sing.  The one I like most sometimes surprises me and I’ve become more bold in the knobs I try.

I recently put together a collection of some of my favorites from around eBay…

…knobs that are chunky glass

 …colored glass...

brass bin cup pulls

…and more.  Click HERE to see the full collection.

  1. Have you seen the kennedy hardware site. kennedyhardware.com
Great place with great reproduction hardware and replacement parts like those little wooden wheels on dressers. Check them out.

  2. I love the hexaganol glass ones on the painted cabinet, they sort of remind me of the glass eyes of the old fashioned teddy bears. I say that as I have one such bear but he has a missing eye.

Next time I makeover some furniture I will have to think about changing the handles. So far I have only done one piece with handles and they were lovely old brass ones so I kept them as was.

  3. Silly question – I bought some pulls and they have super long posts on them. Do you cut those somehow or just leave them? I would prefer to not have them long but I’m not sure how I would cut them down.

    Thanks.

    1. You can cut them off with bolt cutters and then file the ends smooth with a metal file so they don’t snag your fabrics, hands, etc.

  4. I love the yellow paint used on the first dresser pictured in this post! Do you happen to know the name of it?

  5. Very nice! The right pulls can really make the piece. I’m looking for pulls for my antique desk and I find it hard to find the right size and material to make it work. Ebay is a great idea!

  6. Its unfortunate us Canadians who love and follow just the same cant be included in these sweepstakes. Maybe next year?

  7. I just discovered that Hobby Lobby has oodles of knobs and pulls that are somewhat unique and they run them half price all the time! This is not a advertisement for Hobby Lobby lol just a fyi!

  8. I have just started my knob collection…..I bought some gorgeous fleur de lis ones from Pier One for $3.98 ea (a little pricey to me – but so gorgeous). Then, I hit the jackpot with some pretty cobalt blue glass ones from knobdeals.com for NINETY-NINE CENTS each! BINGO!
