fiddling in the living room

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been very productive in many ways, but I haven’t been able to work on some of the things I really want to work on like house projects and painting!  I try to plan my weeks, though, so they are “front-loaded.”  I have all of the meetings and heavy computer days at the beginning of the week, so I have the last half of the week for more creative pursuits.  It’s a strategy I’ve used for several months, but I am admittedly still finetuning it.  I’m still trying to figure out how to get all of my work done and have a life and quality family time and paint and workout and cook…  I know many of you get it.  Aren’t we all trying to figure out how to fit it all in?

So, after hitting the gym this morning, I carved out some time to fiddle around with accessories in the family room.  Since we got the buffalo check sectional, I’ve wanted to really work on this room.  For the most part, the accessories are exactly how they were placed just a few weeks after we moved into the house.  I’m feeling ready to try some different things.

I used to play in my house constantly…rearranging furniture on a whim and trading one piece for another as I bought and sold antiques.  I’ve enjoyed the stability and calm of putting something in a place and leaving it there, but I also feel the pull to be creative in my home.

So, I played.

One of my readers suggested swapping the horse and the birdcage and I had never thought of that!  I honestly didn’t think the horse would fit, but after eyeballing it a little closer, I realized it would.  It actually worked pretty well and I liked the color the birdcage brought to the wall above the dresser.  The cool thing about the birdcage is it is meant to hang on the wall, so we can do that.

The horse was framed nicely in the little niche (that’s actually meant for a TV), but I didn’t like the horse and the cow next to each other.  I felt like they were competing.

I decided to try a basket, which was my original thought when we moved in.  I put the horse on the trunk behind the sofa to get it out of the way and I sort of like it there!

The basket in the niche, though?  I didn’t like that.  It didn’t fill up the space enough and was too light in color.  (Esmé spotted herself in the mirror!)

But, I have a lot of baskets!  In fact, I just bought one last week that’s larger and darker AND has a lid.  I brought it down from the sewing room and tried it.  I really like the warmth and texture it brings and stacking a few antique coverlets on top adds more color.

And, the longer the birdcage sits on the dresser, the more I like it there.  Jeff said he’d help me hang it on the wall this weekend.  I’ll obviously take those plates down and try something different.

This did leave me feeling like it would be nice to bring some color to the built-ins on the other side, too.  I’m going to play around with some books and even bringing in some blue and white transferware from the dining room.  I think it’ll add more interest to these shelves.  We’ll see.  I do like the visual quiet of the all-white ironstone.

Playing definitely has a ripple effect.  You start moving one thing and then you’re ready to rearrange the whole house!

I hope to chip away at this room over the next few days.

In other house news, we’re making some progress on Calvin’s room.  He’s my youngest son and likes a modern style, but we’re navigating it pretty well together.  Last week, we shopped craigslist and found a great mid-century modern dresser for $80.  It’s in fantastic shape and has the clean lines he wants, but it’s vintage and well-made, just like mom wants.  We also found a navy blue upholstered bed frame online.  It arrived yesterday and we’ll put it together tomorrow.  Now, we need to pick the paint color…

I’ll show you pictures once he cleans his room.  He did not get his tidiness from his mom, I can tell you that!

So glad you are thinking of fine tuning your ironstone side of the bookcases. I love your ironstone but feel it looks too kitchen-y/dining room for the amount on display there. Think it would actually show off more used as accent pieces among warmer objects like the books & other objects you mentioned . I even think all the heaviness of so much sterile whiteness on that whole end of the room makes the darkness of the granite fireplace surround stand out more. Color & softness mixed in might distract from the elements you don’t like on the fireplace; so would Eualie’s old, larger, warmer toned gold frame. It’s a rare day when I think something you’ve done could stand a little tweaking, but you are right, it does take a bit of fiddling at times! Wish I had lots of extra eyes to offer me suggestions – I think! Am sure that is a bad thing too!

      • Marian Parsons

All great thoughts! It is mostly nice to have extra sets of eyes, but it can sometimes be overwhelming or it’s just too much input! I always take it as helpful, though, and well-meaning, even if someone doesn’t like something. There is a comments section for a reason and I’m glad my readers utilize it. 🙂

        • Kellene

Whenever I see you work on projects in your home I feel.so inspired. This is the reason I originally began to follow you years ago!! Thanks!! You are such a joy!

        • Dianne

Just a thought. What about putting a starched print fabric inside your cabinet with the ironstone? That way the brimstone would really pop with the print behind it. I love the brimstone collection.

    2. Mary Anne Saunders

Love your ironstone there as it reflects YOUR style. You could bring in more color by painting the back of the built-ins. (Look who I’m suggesting painting to ?) Always fun to move things around.

    3. lulu

In the niche to the left of the fireplace (where you have to basket topped with quilts) maybe add a shelf in there to break up that large square. Or you could add cabinet doors.

      • Marian Parsons

Yes, I’ve thought of both of those options. Maybe down the road…

    4. Lulu

another thought, take the doors off the cabinet above the empty space and build out both sections with shelves. Maybe it would create a better balance.

      • Marian Parsons

That cabinet is much deeper than the one on the right side, so it would be tough to find the right pieces to fill it. I had considered removing the doors, too. The lack of symmetry is the real “problem.”

    5. Susan

Have you considered painting the cabinets on the left the same color as the wall? I think they would quiet down and put more of the focus on the fire place. Right now it feels like there are too many elements on that wall trying to be the “star”. With the cabinet doors taking up such a large visual space, your eye is drawn there since they are white, and they are emphasized by the white. I don’t think that’s what you want since they aren’t your style. I know you are decorating in stages and the house is evolving as you live in it. And I love being along for the ride. Yet every time I see a photo of that space my brain says “paint the cabinets!” Lol. I only wish my space was as pretty as your’s. Even your transitions are better than my final, and I feel stuck…

      • Marian Parsons

I hadn’t considered that, but I had thought about painting that entire wall white to make it look like it’s all cabinetry, shelving, and wood paneling (adding more trim around the fireplace, etc.) That’s a possibility. We’ll be adding beams and crown molding down the road, so I might consider that then.

        • Susan

Oooh! Painting ALL of it white sounds like s great idea too!!!

    6. peg

I love where you have moved the horse to, and I love the new basket on the shelves with the quilts. You are right, it warms up the room!

      • Marian Parsons

        Thanks!

    7. Kim

I love the shot with the kitten looking in the mirror on the floor…..

      • Marian Parsons

I thought that was cute, too!

    8. Phyllis

Perhaps keeping the ironstone there and adding wallpaper or wrapping paper behind the hem on the cabinet back to tie into the throws on the other side of the fireplace. That way your eye catches on one side and moves to the other for interest and balance. Just another option to consider.

      • Marian Parsons

I think it’s a great idea to back shelves with a contrasting color or a paper, but I don’t think I want to add another pattern to the room.

    9. Jo Ann

I like the basket better there but try folding quilts to be closer in size to the width of the basket I agree with you about the ironstone being too much of the same. Try painting a piece of poster board the Boxwood color and see how that looks as back of the cabinets.
Love anything you do so take all our suggestions with a grain of salt if you wish. .

      • Marian Parsons

yeah, I’ll play around with the quilts. I just put them there as they were folded. I don’t think I’d like the green backing the cabinet, but might be worth a shot…

    10. Nora

I love where the horse is. That’s a great location. I’m with the others thinking that doing something behind the ironstone might make your beautiful collection stand out more. If you have left over fabric from your window treatment maybe you could starch the fabric behind the ironstone.
Not sure I like the birdcage on/near that dresser. It seems to be competing instead of blending color-wise. Both colors are pretty but to me they don’t compliment each other.
Those are my two cents. Now I’ll zip my lip.

      • Nora

The more I look ….maybe if you hang the birdcage above the dresser like you suggested perhaps a pretty green plant in between the dresser and cage would blend the two pieces. Then maybe add some greenery in between the ironstone pieces on the right side of the mantle.

        • Dianne

Sorry I meant brimstone not brimestone

    11. Sandy

I love Lulu’s ideas. Take out the upper cabinet and then add those floating white shelves in the whole space (Amazon). I think it will look amazing. Thank you for being open to our ideas….I love giving advice! lol xoxo

      • Karen

I love the horse where you moved him-behind the sofa.. Looks great! I also love the basket-you are right the darker one makes such a statement! I personally love your white ironstone as is. Such a great collection..& the shelves show it off beautifully. The bird cage is really beautiful. You have great ideas. We read your blog because we are so touched by your ideas. ❤️

    12. Laura L

I think painting the back of the bookcase in the same color as the wall (or maybe a shade darker) would add interest and showcase all of the ironstone by breaking up all of that white.

    13. Arlene

My initial thought, when you got your new sofa, was what if you painted the back of the shelves a dark blue like your sofa? Then your ironstone would really pop! I think the all white look worked better with your beige sofa. What if you took the cupboard doors off above where the birdcage was? Maybe a more open space on that side? I also had wondered about the birdcage and I’m glad you moved it out. It will give it more prominence outside the cupboard. I so look forward to your changes!

    14. Anita Roth

I love the cat looking at himself I the mirror! Too cute!

    15. Debbie NIsson

I agree with all the comments about painting the back of the shelves and opening up the shelves on the other side to match. Since there is no TV you don’t need to hide electronics etc. Hate to say it but I’m not crazy about the bird cage. I was hoping for the mirror!

    16. Melissa

I loved the horse in the niche and his chippy-ness played well with the chippy-ness of the sconces that sit on the fireplace…..but that’s just my 2 cents 🙂

    17. Connie

I think we all putter with our homes. Sometimes I will want more stuff or color then I want cleaner & calmer. But overall I like to mix things up from time to time. I don’t have your gift for display so mine is trial and error but I do know when I finally get it right. Am thankful for bloggers like you to inspire me.

      • Elizabeth

So fun to hear and see your musings in your beautiful home! I love the horse behind the couch like others. Am a bit surprised by the bird cage as well. It does seem rather heavy and boxy with a lot of other body shapes on that corner. But I trust your taste so will be excited to see what you come up with next. I like the idea to add something to the ironstone. Your house is gorgeous!

    18. Teri

I’m not crazy about that birdcage either but it might look pretty if it was crammed with plants, ferns etc xx still love your blog after so many years

    19. Cabrini Rudnick

ever think of painting or wallpapering the back of your book cases? I painted mine a navy blue and really created a nice level of depth and grounded the space and made light things on them pop. I would consider that if I were you.

    20. Lisa P

You are so kind to share so much of your house with us. We all learn so much from your photos and the posts where you explain your thinking. It inspires us to look at our own spaces with fresh eyes!

      Thanks!

    21. Diney

I love the bird cage sitting on the chest. I wonder how you would feel about moving the chest further from the built in and placing a pair of bird prints in warm toned frames above? This might create a lovely focal point on that short wall.
Your new basket brings in wonderful texture and the quilts are lovely as is. Even though I’ve already made a suggestion, I, too agree with Lulu concerning replacing the cabinet doors with floating shelves from Amazon. If it’s not possible right now, you could just replace the top ones as someone else suggested. This would unify both sides and would be lovely filled with books creating a mini library. Using some of your incredible ironstone amongst the books would add interest.
You inspire me everyday and I so look forward to seeing the results of your latest fiddling.

    22. Shelley Humpal

OK Marian I have been reading your blog and watching your growth for years and never commented. I’m a designer who loves antiques. Your’s is one of the first blogs I started to follow. On these bookcases, I studied them and I couldn’t figure out what the problem was until I really looked at them today. You have 2 completely different design elements from side to side. There is no connection between the two. You have all this heavy build on the left with 2 upper cabinets that don’t line up and the tv cavity which is always a challenge. I actually really liked the birdcage in there. On the right you have all the shelves and the arch at the top. Remove the arch and make it straight going across the top. Remove one shelf from each stack it’s just too much and too tight. Paint the cabinets when your shoulder is better the same color as the wall in a satin finish. It will be quiet but elegant. That may be enough to pull it together. The contrast you have now is accentuating the fact that your design elements are different. Yes you could think about going for contrast behind the cabinets but I think if you make that change you will find it to be more cohesive. I am a blue and white transferware collector and love everything you do so definitely take all this with a grain of salt. You’ve got this but sometimes even designers need a designer because you can’t see your own forest thru your own trees! Add books and other elements to the right. I wrote a post about doing book shelves check it out. Oh and I’m also originally from MN. Live in NE now.

      • Marian Parsons

Thanks for your thoughts! Yes, the problem is definitely symmetry and the lack of it. the cabinets are not only a different, but different depths. The problem is that ripping them out or even some of them out (as others have suggested) is a pretty major undertaking and not one we want to do where there are projects that will ultimately add more value to the home. This one is just about preference. So, we’ll be keeping them as is. One thought I had was to paint that entire wall white and add some more molding, so it looks like an entire wall of cabinetry and wood paneling. Anyway, still mulling it over!

        • Rita

You could add a fake backing to the left cabinets bringing it forward to match the right side. It doesn’t have to be permanent by building a 2×4 frame to attach it to. The tongue and groove like you have on the butler’s pantry would look nice. That’s a hard one indeed, but everything you do looks beautiful. It will come to you.

          • Marian Parsons

Based on the configuration of the cabinets, it would still look off and we do use those cabinets for storage. Ultimately, if we wanted to make it symmetrical, we would just redo the right side, but I don’t think that’s worth the investment.

    23. Lisa P

We all love what you do!

      Thanks!

Hi Marion I love all that you do…I always have …you are the first blog I followed your book is the first book I purchased authored by a blogger…you are the real deal! Sincere, genuine, and honest ! Thank you for all you continue to do for us….always inspirational…after Christmas I put all my treasured white ironstone in my butlers pantry with glass cabinet doors and a few beautiful boxwood balls here and there..loved the quiet but little by little my blue transferware is appearing…and there is NOTHING better than BLUE and WHITE ! Thank you , Anne

      • Karen

I love the horse where you moved him-behind the sofa.. Looks great! I also love the basket-you are right the darker one makes such a statement! I personally love your white ironstone as is. 25. Naomi Shelton

Yeah, I’m not so taken with that birdcage in that space, even if it was on the wall. I think it is too rustic and rough-looking for the rest of the room and it seems too large and too repetitive in shape in relation to the dresser. How about a nice piece of white ironstone with a beautiful green plant in it? I think that corner needs a bit of color. I know, but what to do with the birdcage? Since I don’t have a good mental picture of the rest of your rooms I can’t advise, but I know you’d come up with something neat if you decided to moves it.

      Have fun arranging and rearranging!

    26. Jennifer Erickson

I really like the baskets and quilts in the television niche. If you plan to display the birdcage, maybe consider adding some greenery inside of it? That would add a little more texture and another layer to that piece.

It’s always fun to change things up, it cost nothing, and you never know what you end up loving!

    27. Tammy

We moved into a 17 year old home this past October. We have the same type of built-in shelving around the fireplace. I’ve been struggling with the larger shelves ( aka tv spot) In fact, I saw your bird cage a few months ago and have been looking for something architectural like that to put in mine. No luck so far. I tried a basket but it didn’t feel right. Now I’m thinking it just may not have been the right size. What I have right now just isn’t big enough. Thanks for the inspiration!

    28. Martha

I really like seeing these kind of posts. I learn so much from your experimenting and reasoning. Plus your house is dreamy.

    29. jean

So, I don’t know if you are really looking for advice and I don’t want to sound all authoritative or anything but if you leave all the ironstone in the white shelving, none of it stands out- you don’t see their amazing shapes or volume because they melt into the white background. Adding the books creates a little contrast so they are a little more visible but what you see then are the dark shapes of the books and not the ironstone. Only suggestions I have at this moment is to add some contrast to the back wall of the cabinet – maybe not paint – that sounds so “permanent” – but maybe line some b&w photos of nature or some paintings of scenes that are not overly attention getting — something pastoral. I agree that there is a calmness about the tonal quality of the arrangement and for the room as a whole that is pleasing, but the flow of the shapes, the rhythm of the curves is lost in all the value sameness. Even painting some panels to place in the back of the shelving that is the same color as the walls would bring the vessels forward and make them more appreciated.
Agree horse and cow are in competition. agree that the lidded basket is brilliant but for balance on the other side you need some dark elements or the left side of the fireplace will dominate the view.
Just my 2-cents for what it’s worth.

I so enjoy your style and palette and can’t wait for my retirement when I’ll have time to think about more than paying the bills and making sure I have all my clothes on before I walk out the door in the morning!

    30. Kelly

I can’t wait to see your shelves styled with transferware!

    31. Mary Johnson

Plants-greenery of some sort is needed to bring some life to these areas!

      • Marian Parsons

Yep, I’m just working on the bigger pieces and then I’ll add in things like plants, etc.

    32. Carole

The horse looks perfect on the green trunk and I like the darker basket also. Like so many others, I feel the birdcage doesn’t work . It just looks too empty and large on that chest. However, I don’t have a clue as to what it needs. I think you are going in the right direction to add some blue to your ironstone collection. All that white on white doesn’t do justice to the pieces. Sometimes I tweak and move things around for weeks before it comes together, and sometimes I just realize it is time to let something go. I know you will figure it out, and thanks for letting us put in our two cents. It makes your blog feel so much more like friends discussing ideas and sharing opinions.

    33. Jan Hamilton

The horse is PERFECT on the trunk behind the couch. You were right about the cow. The dark basket looks like it was made for the tv space, and it is nice to have the blues in that corner. (Birdcage and coverlets). Can’t wait to see the transfer ware on the shelves. Your eye is faultless. The room is really coming together, and I thought it was great before! ?

    34. Deborah D

I totally love the birdcage ans can’t wait to see ittm hung. Congratulations to both winners.

    35. J johnson

As viewers, our eyes need a quiet area to rest especially when there is so much going on. I actually liked the relationship between the horse and Cow, but good design always dictates forms looking into the “image area” or focal point
instead of directing our eyes away from
It. The basket seems really heavy to me and competes with the dresser. The horse would look great facing the cow, creating a “relationship” of sorts. You have a lot of lovely things, maybe simplify what you present, pare down and you can always rotate your stock!!!

    36. Krista

I always love your eye for design and everything you do, and I’m not one to critique someone else, but I also am not a fan of the birdcage nor the brown dresser below it. Looking at the pictures, I’d keep the basket with coverlets in the niche. I’d paint the background area of the ironstone shelves a dark blue to make the ironstone pop and maybe add some blue and white ironstone, some small boxwood balls or topiary and add some book stacks. Keep the horse on the chest. Paint the brown dresser in your dark blue milk paint color, which I love, and hang the mirror above it. Just my thoughts, but I know whatever you decide will be beautiful!

    37. Jeannie

How about painting your kitty looking at herself in the mirror? That is adorable!

Could you put up a picture of the whole fireplace wall like the one on Jan 22, 2020 to make a side by side comparison? I keep looking between the two. I like the birdcage in the TV opening but I like the larger basket & quilts there also. I like your ironstone collection on the shelves; if you paint there, I don’t think it needs to be really dark. I like the horse behind the sofa. I’d try the birdcage in the back corner where your lady is black is now. And maybe the lady where the birdcage is. Although it may be too dark there.

I haven’t really had any opinions about anyone’s rooms for years! Lucky you, huh? 😉 I love your home, so anything you decide will be beautiful.

    38. Meredith MacRitchie

If I had a niche in the built ins like that, I would be tempted to do something fun to the back of it – pattern or colour. I imagine it is a little bit tricky to work with without making it look like a tv slot without a tv! I have 3 kids and a husband who did not inherit my affinity for tidy spaces!! I hear you!

    39. Ann

      hi Marian!
Just wondering: what color paint did you use in your living room? Is it a pale blue or a gray? I like it!

    40. Kathie B

I really enjoyed this post and your style. I love the horse there and the idea of hanging the birdcage. I think the vintage basket with the quilts looks great in the niche. Experimenting is so much fun.

    41. Kathy

I have learnt over the years…to incorporate what makes my eyes see comfort in. If you scan the room and your eye suddenly stops on a misplaced item..it typically means , remove the item for a calming effect. But experiment and be daring..bring in the unexpected. The horse in the book shelf is adorable..but my thought is..he should be facing the fireplace where the action is and not towards a wall. I would also attach some green grass to his mouth to brinv in a natural element…..Your space will come alive with plants..especially because you have animals in the room. have

    42. Bunny Heppner

You have the Target look down pat.

      • Marian Parsons

I’m not sure what that means. I didn’t get any of this at Target… Hmm…

    43. Tammie Price

It turned out great! Every time I style a space and get it how I want it, I think, I am never going to want to change this up! .. Two weeks later, on a whim, I am changing it all up! Lol…

    44. Maria

Arranging and re-arranging can be so gratifying. Shopping your home for me is fun, challenging and a creative endeavor. You have been inspiring me to do this for many years and I thank you!!! I look forward to seeing what you come up with;)

    45. Addie

      Hello!!!
First of all I LOVE everything you do…..okay so now it comes……. I have always liked the birdcage in the cubby hole. The blue is just the right touch on that side. I personally don’t care for it on the dresser. Kinda misplaced . Don’t care for the basket of blankets in the cubby….doesn’t look natural (?) I feel the blankets need to be addressed as something you would use not just on display, “DO NOT TOUCH” . Don’t like the rocking horse in the cubby or on that dresser. Loved the rocking horse in entry way. However, it may be too tall now with the new cabinet. Do like it behind the sofa!!!! It looks SOOOOO good on the green chest. Which could have been a toy chest at one time. So. it makes sense to me. Also, it really shines next to the new sofa fabric and the green chest. It looked lost/blended in in the cubby.
I love your collection of ironstone. Some have mentioned, “it’s too much” or “it looks like it should be in a dining room”…..
Well, I don’t agree with that line of thinking!!! This is what YOU love to collect and this is YOUR home. It should reflect YOUR interests and loves. I would like to see the backing painted in a blue. Fabric (as mentioned) would be too busy.
Light blue paint would give it “pop” factor.
So now, the thing that has always distracted me. That beautiful, dark and heavy clock by the ironstone. I think it should be by itself centered on that wall. It is a beauty and needs to shine and have it’s glory all by itself. It seems a bit crammed in there with the little silhouettes pics. around it. Maybe, centered with 3 ironstone butter pats on each side?
That way it would connect to your collection but not compete for attention. It needs breathing room.
Now PLEASE hear me….I am NOT a decorator by ANY means. You are!!! You do fabulous things. I am not qualified to make any of these suggestions. ALSO…..You live there and we are ONLY seeing one demential pictures. In person things can and do look and feel differently. Also, you are so brave and sweet to put this out there. This is a fun post and it really helps to know that even experts can be stumped. What the heck do I know!!!! You will figure it all out…..you always do!!!!

    46. Anna Edwards

I would love to see one of your landscape paintings hung (or propped) in front of the large basket in the niche. Just to add a little more color and interest to the darkness of the basket. I always try a hundred options before settling on a choice!

    47. Michele M.

Lookin great! Congrats to the winners of the giveaways! Lucky ladies!!!

Have fun with Calvin’s room – can’t wait to see it when completed!

    48. Lulu

Love your home! You are always inspiring us; nice for the opportunity to inspire you! After studying the left and right sides, noticed that the right cabinets are “set back” and there is counter space as well on that side. Agree with you that things look off balance and symmetry would be nice. Took another look at your butler’s pantry’; love that look. Maybe consider doing the same in the living room but in a shade of blue. Also, this would take some reconfiguring but you could “set back’ the cabinets on the left to match the cabinets on the right. Either way your home is beautiful and always look forward to new posts. Because of you, I sewed my first slipcover, (for an ottoman). It turned out great. You always say go for it, so I did. Thanks!

I definitely like the concept of hanging the birdcage. It is a statement piece. The large basket is a good replacement. I can’t believe how many people comment on your granite fireplace. It’s very expensive to redo and natural stone is just fine. I think they are believing the unrealistic prices they quote on HGTV for replacement. I love how you get the itch to switch things around!

Okay, for what its worth here’s my two cents worth. I think the birdcage should go back in the open shelve and paint behind the book shelves with the ironstone collection on the other side a darker blue that will make all the white ironstone pop. I think the contrast between the blue birdcage and the painted blue on the other side would look beautiful.

I don’t think hanging the birdcage on putting it on a dresser does it justice and it would look too bulky hanging on the wall as well. I really think removing the dresser might look better as well. I think once you hang the birdcage you will regret it but I might be wrong. The ironstone plate collection you have on the wall is too small and gets lost. One last thing that might look good is to place some of your books on the top shelves and remove the bigger ironstone bowl pieces and put some greenery in them for color. Now, I am no decorator by any means and I have to do just like you play around with things until I find the right balance and fit. Good luck.

      I love your living room!
If you’re wanting comments from the cheap seats,
I agree editing the ironstone would look better. My eye also travels quickly to the hits of brown against the white , light and airy. I would white wash the basket or find a much lighter one I also think the brown chest doesn’t tie in and then adding the blue is unbalanced in the vignette ( ie the right side of the room) Anyways it looks great as is and these are things I would do.

Wow, your head must spin with all these suggestions. I agree with painting behind the ironstone but think that a dark color will make your whole room off balance. Instead, I would use your wall color, or at most, would go one shade deeper on the color strip. That way it’s cohesive with the whole room and will still give pop to your ironstone. I’m not a fan of the birdcage but wondered about repurposing it by adding a top to it and using it more as a table. I like the rocking horse on top of the chest and the basket in the niche. I also like the dark color of the basket as well as the chest. Though painted finishes are nice, the wood tones mixed in give the room depth. Finally, what I don’t understand is why people use these large pictures of cows in prominent places much as you would do with a portrait of a family member. What is the message that I’m missing?

I have never jumped in with my opinion, but I absolutely have to say how much I am in love with your living room and the way you have styled your shelves with the blue transferware, ironstone, books, and greenery. I wish I had just a teensy bit of your amazing talent! I have ironstone and Leeds creamware, I have blue transferware, antique coverlets….but nothing comes even close to your stunning displays. Where to start? I will continue to check in to enjoy all that you are doing. As a very addicted DIYer, I am always inspired by your talents and learn something new. I am sooo inspired, I would love to go back to blue/white….if I just hadn’t bought that lonnnggg gray sofa!

Marian, the larger basket looks wonderful. By the way, your buffalo check sectional, is to die for!!!
