Wardrobe Makeover & 2014 Lucketts Recap Day 2

Before I get to a recap of day two at the Lucketts Spring Market, I thought I would show a before and after of one of the furniture pieces I sold there this past weekend.  This is how the piece started…

It was in pretty nice condition and could’ve been used as is, but I felt that paint would bring out the details of the piece much better.  Cari painted the interior in MMSMP Shutter Gray and the exterior in Grain Sack.  I then came in and added Ironstone to the details, lightly distressed the edges and finished the entire piece off with Hemp Oil.

It turned out so sweet and I love the wood details against the painted finishes.

It looked great in the space and sold fast!

And that’s the whole point!

In contrast to the frenzy of day one at Lucketts, day two is more relaxed.  This year, Sunday was a little different, though.  It wasn’t a madhouse, but for the first time that I know of, there was a line to get in the gate Sunday morning.

I think a lot of people who were deterred by the traffic, mud and parking issues, decided to come out on Sunday and it ended up being a pretty busy day.  I was pretty picked over by the end of Saturday, so setting up the booth was a challenge, but here’s how it turned out…

I had too many smalls and not enough furniture to put them on, so I used a card table with hemp tablecloths as a display.

We sold a ton of books and t-shirts, a few smalls and all of the furniture except two pieces – the Tricycle dresser and Eulalie’s Sky Cabinet.  It ended up being my biggest “day two” and biggest Lucketts weekend overall.  Having the two leftover pieces ended up working out great.  Cassie and Sarah of Sweet Clover Barn in Frederick, MD needed furniture for their upcoming sale this weekend and I didn’t want to take those pieces home, so they took them in their truck to sell on consignment.  Sweet!  So, if you’re interested in purchasing either of those pieces, you can get them this weekend at Sweet Clover Barn.  (Although, I know the Eulalie’s Sky cabinet has had a few inquiries, so that might be sold already.)

So, what’s left?  I do still have some ironstone and other smalls, two green velvet chairs, the dress form and a few other things, but not much!  I’ll be listing the smalls in my online shop and will pick through the rest to figure out what I’m going to do with it.  I’ll most likely give the green chairs a makeover and put them up “on the block” again, so to speak.  I’ll share more information about what’s left in the next few days.

For now, I’m still resting and catching up.  After working so hard the weeks leading up to Lucketts, I am totally exhausted!  My neck and shoulders have been really tight and sore, my voice has been hoarse and I’m definitely not up to my usual speed, so I’m taking it easy.  Like, sitting on the couch in my jannies, watching Netflix and browsing Pinterest kind of relaxing!

I am excited to get back to painting, sewing, working on the look book and organizing my house, though, so hopefully I’ll be right as rain next week.

  1. I do so love those green velvet chairs! I wish I had a space for them. Enjoy your downtime! You deserve it.

  2. Can you tell me what you call the clip holder in the last picture of this post? It is exactly what I am looking for….thank you

  3. I thought this was going to be a post on your own wardrobe changes! I have enjoyed those posts along with your furniture posts!!!

    1. Me, too! I thought there were going to be new MMS shirts or something similar! 🙂

  4. I have several, meaning 7, of those rolling “rodded” shelves in the front of your booth space..the ones I have were purchase 28 years ago for $1.00 each when the local skate factory moved production to China…they would place ice and roller skates on them as one procedure was complete then roll to the next area to have next procedure completed…Roller Derby Skate Factory. I have also have taller ones that are well over 6 ft. tall. They are a bit wider but less in depth..make sense.? When my kids were all home they each had one in their rooms made great storage for baskets of GI joes,Ninja Turtles, and of course Super heroes. I still have them used in my shed still organizing…best 7 bucks I have ever spent…Glad you had a successful weekend ..I have dealer friends that do a different Flea Market every week…how they do it I will never know…lots of work and these gals are no spring chickens..gotta love what you do….MM

  5. I was told by one of your retailers that using hemp oil over ironstone or grainsack( your lighter milk paints) would cause the paint to yellow. I have been afraid to try it because of this. I have only used the wax on these colors. I assume this isn’t he case after looking at this piece. I love the ironstone milk paint and would love to use the hemp oil over it if this works without changing the color. Thank you

    1. I do not have problem with yellowing with the Hemp Oil, but it can bring out yellow undertones in the wood that was painted underneath. It can also bring out the cream in Linen, but not Ironstone or Grain Sack. I would suggest testing it in a small area just to make sure, but I use it over those colors all the time and it looks great!

  6. I love the way the wardrobe turned out. The interior and exterior colors go really well together. I can’t believe the green velvet chairs didn’t sell! I would be snatching them up if I were there. Hope you have a relaxing week 🙂

  7. I’ve liked reading about your Lucketts adventures and seeing all the hard work that goes into it. It’s made me tired just thinking about it. Enjoy your well deserved downtime!

  11. marian,
Can you show the final make over on the small white table with spindle legs? It is on left side in your pics. I have the exact one, mine has small drawer and I can’t tell if yours did too.

  12. Congrats on such a successful time at Lucketts. I don’t know if I would consider writing and publishing blog posts “resting,” though. 😉 Are you blogging between Netflix episodes or during them?

  13. So glad your sale went well. Was wondering how the sale of your home is going. Can’t imagine someone hasn’t whipped that up as of yet. Good luck

  21. Someone got a really good deal with that wardrobe! Oh, and I can’t believe the Tricycle dresser didn’t sell! I suppose, not too many people like bright red in their homes…

  22. The wardrobe turned out really well. I do like the way the paint brought out the details. I read two blogs that visited the show. They said they had a wonderful time. Looks like you did too!

  23. Glad the show was a great success and hope you are getting some much deserved R&R. I was bummed because most of the ironstone was gone by the time I arrived on Saturday so next year I will use a different strategy and come and spend Friday night in Leesburg.

I did want to compliment you on your booth and how well set up and organized it was. Your family and helpers were all very nice and helpful.

  24. When will you have more 8″ boxwood wreaths. I really, really, really need one!

  25. Just left you a longer message on your previous post…I am interested in the dress form still! Please email me, maybe somehow, I can get to MD in our move to TN (from MI)!

  26. Couple things…one loving the dress form. Is it still for sale? If so how much is it? I need one with a cage around the bottom.
Second , I really want you to come to St. Louis Vintage Market Days. Tell me how to make this happen!!! 🙂

  27. I really love tricycle and wanted to add a little color to my booth for my next show, just wondering if you have an opinion on some of the brighter colors and their popularity and sales ability?
Also, we are all so blessed by your mentoring and your willingness to share so we can all grow our business’s! Be blessed sister!

  28. Hello, I was there on Saturday…first thing thanks to your suggestion!! It was fun and I loved the frenzy of it all. I came looking for a wooden box, just like the one you have displayed above on the ground with the handle but didn’t see it! Do you still have that one? If so can I buy it from you? If not, how do I get one? Thanks again, it was so nice meeting you.

  29. Oh wow, what a difference in that cabinet. I think grainsack is my new favorite color ! It is so sweet in that color!
You’ve done a million things since i last read your posts!
