Thrift Store Makeovers

Here are a couple of simple thrift store makeovers. I found these ceramic birds last week at a Goodwill and fell in love with them. They were pretty as is, but had this weird goldish kind of spray over them, so I decided to spray them a glossy white…

…and here they are 2 coats later. Very simple and low cost. Love it! The question is…should I add an antique glaze? Any thoughts?
Again, this resin jewelry box was fine, but some of the “gold” was chipping off and I’m not normally a gold kind of gal. So, I sprayed it in Krylon’s Oil Rubbed Bronze (one of my favorites!)
And here it is. Very subtle change, but it looks fantastic.
I just finished the aqua vanity that was in my basement and I have several other furniture projects in the works. Lots more before & after pics to come!

  1. I just found your blog, and I'm really enjoying everything. I love the birds. If it were me, I would glaze them. But I like things to look old and distressed. That's just my taste! I'm going to follow your blog. Love it!

  2. Not that I'm as talented as you, but sometimes when I do a project I live with it for awhile before adding to it ~ especially if I like it as is already. The birds look very fresh right now. I like them white, but I guess it depends where you are putting them and what else is going on in the room.

  3. Wow-this is wild!
I found the same birds @ a thrift shop this morning. I found 2 big & 1 little and they were already glossy. I LOVE, LOVE , LOVE them!

  4. I like Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions comment – live with it and see how you like it. I like them white 🙂

  5. I normally like things distressed but these birds look like they should be glossy white….I vote for keeping them the way they are….they look beautiful.

  6. The birds are darling. I wonder if you'd want to do some drybrushing on the oil rubbed box? I love the patina of oil rubbed bronze. It would be so pretty with some more depth, maybe? I'm not a pro at this, so I defer to you. 🙂

  7. I like what you did with these and would love to know how you prepped them and what kind of paint you used. I have one very like these that I’d love to paint. Thanks, Madmairgread

This week started with the loss of power from a storm.  It wasn’t really the storm that knocked out the power, but the wall of wind that came right before the rain.  It took out trees, limbs, power poles, and made a general mess of our yard and pool.  Jeff
