I got a great response from my sheet music table and I have a huge stash of antique sheet music, so why not cover a shade with it?
I purchased this figurine lamp from a thrift store a few weeks ago.  It’s been sitting in my basement until inspiration struck.  I then found this small, white shade at Target on clearance for $2.48!  It was the perfect scale and shape for the little lamp and a sheet music treatment would work with the horn-playing cherub figurine.
I brushed Mod Podge directly onto the fabric shade and applied the sheet music, cropping off the extra with a sharp knife.  I finished the shade with two more coats of Mod Podge over the sheet music.  This was a bit of an experiment, but it turned out beautifully…no bubbles or wrinkles.
Now, I had to tackle the lamp.  The shape was cute, but there were too many finishes competing with one another.  The figurine is ceramic, the base is marble, and the connective pieces are plastic.  I think painting marble may be the eighth deadly sin, but it had to be done.  I know it’s wrong and it took me about two weeks to get the courage to do it.  Finally, I taped off the lamp works, took a deep breath, and sprayed on two coats of Krylon Ivory.  I deliberately over sprayed in a few areas to add a “crackle” texture.  The lamp base was finished off with a dark walnut antiquing stain and a spray coat of Satin Poly.
I am so pleased with the outcome (and it sold in my Etsy store already!)
So, am I forgiven for painting marble?  I promise I won’t ever do it again…maybe.

Thanks for the great how-to… LOVE sheet music.

    3. Becky@Beyond The Picket Fence

    4. Annie @ The House That Jade Built

This is fabulous! I love how it turned out! I've been working on some lampshades with fabric, but I'm going to have to test out some old book pages or sheet music now 🙂

    5. Desiree

Wow, I absolutely love it!!! I would love to find some sheet music somewhere to craft with, it's so beautiful…

    6. Crystal

Of course you will be forgiven for painting marble and your lamp turned out fabulous. I can believe it would be sold already. I just love to Mod Podge and the staining idea looks great.

      Have a blessed day.

    7. Jane

I love using old sheet music in projects although I have never tackled a lampshade. Your lamp project turned out great. Better to paint the marble than to have the lamp sitting unused in a thrift store 🙂

The shade looks great!!! I just used some pages from a hymnal (songs that have special meaning to me)…and used Modge Podge to adhere them to a small wooden tray. It's posted on my blog!!! By the way…I'm the one who complained about the small print on your blog…thank you, thank you, thank you for letting me know how to enlarge it so that this old lady can read it!!! Gettin' old ain't pretty..well, not for some of us!! HA! HA! Keep up the good work…love, love, love your blog!

    12. Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions

Deadly sin or not, I think it was the right thing to do! It came out great! Love the idea of putting sheet music on the shade and it really tied in nicely with the musical theme of the lamp.

    13. Jessica @ This Blessed Life

I LOVE your music shade! I used to be music teacher, so I'm a little biased, but still – great job!

I love the lamp too. Who cares about a little block of marble when the results are this great. I think I'll try the lampshade trick. Sheet music and old book pages-I need to think of more projects to show them off. Thanks for the inspiration! Sherry

    22. sissie

I love what you did with the lamp base. To me marble is kinda hohum and the treatment that you gave it
      created some real pizazz.
The shade with the sheet music is so lovely.

      Great job.

      hugs

I am in love. That is amazing. I would have never thought to paint over marble but so many times I have needed it. Thank you, great tutorial and great results.

    37. Wendy @ The Shabby Nest

Really fabulous!!! And, in my opinion, if it doesn't work for you, it doesn't work…and if spraypainting will fix it, then paint it! (hee hee!)

I just read this post. Don't fret about painting marble. Ancient Roman and Greek statuary and architecture was painted bright colors…it wasn't left the pure white marble we see today….
