Table Before & After

I love it when I finally finish a piece.  This one has been hanging out in my basement for a really long time.  An embarrasingly long time.
The woman who owns “my” shop found this on the side of the road.  Can you believe that?  It’s an amazing piece!  Anyway, she gave it to me months ago to paint to compliment a hand painted cabinet she had in her bedroom.
Here’s the embarrassing part.  I’ve had this table AND her cabinet for months.  I mean months.  I’m tempted to say almost a year.  Yikes.  We had events, projects, new clients, our shop moved, I’d get busy on other things and I just got use to those pieces sitting in my stash.  So, at long last, I finished it and they are going home to their rightful owner.
This table was painted in a custom-mixed blue to compliment the small hand painted chest.  I then added some decorative painting to further tie the two pieces together.
The wood top was so pretty, so I simply sanded it lightly, added some Colonial Maple stain and finished it with wipe-on poly.
This looks like a kitchen work table or desk that was cut down to size.  It’s now a nice coffee table height or would be adorable as a desk for a small child.
I’m so glad I finally finished this piece, but I’m sad to see it go.  I’ll have to arrange visitations for this one.

I posted this to Sarah’s Before & After Party.
PS – Here’s the mix for the custom blue in case any of you just have to have this color.  I’m sure your people at Sherwin Williams or our local paint store can figure this out for you.

  1. Oooh, It's lovely! I am in need of a coffee table, one with storage underneath- I bet somehting like this (with a few bins or baskets under it) would be perfect! I guess I never thought of cutting a table down to a different height!

Love the color- so glad you left the top wood. Very nice details you added to the drawers. I can see why you would be sad to see it go!

  2. That is beautiful, well done! I have just spray painted my first piece of furniture (will be up on my blog soon) and would like to try something like this one day, I think it will take me a while to build up the confidence, though! 🙂

  3. I wonder why I never see anything like this on the side of the road? The other day I was roaming the countryside with my camera, and saw a wheelbarrow. I drove back to get a second look, but it was torn apart. I kept thinking: New fairy garden! But it was not to be. You did a fantastic job on this table!

  4. that turned out beautifully! i love the color you chose and i love that you kept the top wooden- i am so into that look these days! love your decorative details and flourishes. looking forward to meeting you at luckett's in a month!

  5. gosh, once again, another great project. i really love the look of the natural wood on top with the painted part below. in fact, i think if the whole thing would have been painted blue, it would have lost some of its charm. you sure have a great eye for good design!

  6. What a wonderful job! I've just found your lovely blog, and can't believe I've been missing out for so long – where have I been? I'm now following so I make sure I don't miss another thing! K xx

  7. I'm in love with this shade of blue! I live with it in my home and never tire of it. My favorite part of this table – the painted white curvies on the drawers…It's such an interesting piece of furniture. Wonder what she's gonna do with it!

  8. What a lovely job you do with your hand painting. This is a sweet table and I love the blue and the clear drawer pulls… You shame me into painting up that little yellow side table I have!

  9. Hi Miss "M"! I loved this post (right along with all the others, since I have been following). You are so wonderful about all of this. First, I love the fact that you share about the things in storage, that have been desperately waiting in line to get their facelift. I do things for my shop and for others too…I also have that embarrassing backlog! But I really love the fact that you are willing to share information with the exact products, brands, directions, etc…Not all bloggers, I regret to say, are like you. You also answer questions…How wonderful. I recently complimented a blogger on the project and asked a question…Well, my comments weren't published and nothing was shared. So, I just want you to know how much I appreciate all your efforts to get the exact point across and to love the art enough to teach it precisely. I recently did a sand candle tutorial (my first) on my blog…You were an inspiration to me and I tried to illustrate every step and product so the readers could have success. Once again, thank you so much, Karen

  10. Hmm…I might have commented yesterday when I got your post in my email…oh well, if so. I'll say it again…love your post and always love seeing what you do. I still think about the music sheet covered dresser.

  11. I love those two ceramic birds you have sitting on top of the table…where did you get them?? I've been looking everywhere for something like that for my guest bedroom.

  12. I was wondering about your birds, as well. I have the same set I bought years ago at a gift shop, and they are various shades of green, brown, and gold that actually look very nice with our living room colors (I have kind of an eclectic Tuscany thing going on in my downstairs.) They look really stunning in white, too. Getting excited about experimenting with painting glass and ceramics. Very lovely results with the desk. I enjoy your blog a lot.
