Stone Fruit & Previews

A few years ago I was browsing through a new Goodwill near my old home in Virginia. As I snooped through the shelves, I spotted the usual thrift store garb – 1970’s dishes, floral vases, enormous brass lamps with dust-covered shades, you know what I’m talking about. I spotted a bin with some plastic fruit in it and thought I’d see if there were any realistic looking pears or lemons that would be worth buying. To my surprise, I saw this…

…an entire collection of stone fruit. For those of you who aren’t familiar with stone fruit, they are hand painted pieces or fruit made out of marble. The are realistic and beautiful. The person pricing for Goodwill that day had no idea what they had. They mixed them in with some hideous plastic fruit for only $.68 a piece. These pieces sell on e-bay for crazy amounts…up to $60-70 for a rare piece.

My grandmother had a huge bowl of stone fruit on her dining room table and I had always admired it. Now, I had my own collection…and I paid less than $8.00 for all of it. It was a great find.

I’m working on a slipcover tutorial, so here is a little sneak peak for you of the subject. I already ripped the old girl’s frilly skirt off. I like frilly skirts, but think of it as going from a gathered maxi skirt to an A-line. It’s going to be a great makeover and an easy slipcovering method.

And here’s the furniture piece I am almost done with. It just needs a few more details…

I am very excited about the nursery mural I am working on this weekend. I showed this image from Pottery Barn to my client, who wasn’t exactly sure what she wanted, and she loved it. I’ll be rendering this with brown paint on pink walls. Very chic. I am really excited about this one and can’t wait to share the pictures with you.

Make sure you come back on Friday (posted Thursday @ 10:00 pm EST) for my first Furniture Feature Friday link party. I’m lining up some great giveaways for future weeks, so if you’re not ready this week, keep working on those projects!

  9. That stone fruit is amazing! It looks so real…beautiful! I also love what you did with the tall fruit tree thingie. I have one I bought a few months ago at a church rumage sale for pennies. I just painted it white but I think I may have to go back ad add some glaze. Yours is beautiful!

  10. Hi! Congrats on such a great find…the fruit is beautiful!!! I love painting murals, have fun with the tree, it will look so cute on pink walls. Can't wait for tomorrow to see you new feature! 11. I've never heard of stone fruit…very cool! That is really a fabulous find! Funny when the goodwill people mark items without know their true value. I guess it's true what they say: One person's trash is another person's treasure! Thanks for sharing Marian…I hope your having fun with frugalicious Friday!
