Painting the guest room is still on the to-do list, and it might be there for a while. As is often the case, decorating the guest room isn’t usually a top priority. I’ve always loved working on the guest rooms in our homes, though. Since I’m not in these rooms daily, I feel I can take a departure from my usual color palette and try something different. The style remains the same, but I step outside my predominantly blue and green palette. In our previous guest rooms, I’ve featured yellow, and I think that will carry into this room as well. I already have the upholstered bed and the pretty gold quilt, so it makes sense to work with that.
This week, I swapped out the rug and made a couple of small tweaks while I continue to consider wall and trim colors as well as window treatments. (Disclosure: The products from the Loloi x CLJ collection were given to me as part of a social media campaign. This blog post is not a part of that, but I wanted to disclose the collaboration.)

Here is how the guest room looked after having the wallpaper stripped, but before having the new windows installed. (You can read about the new windows HERE.)

I liked the rug in this room, but the pink coloring didn’t really relate to anything else. It felt a little off. When I spotted this jute blend, block-print style rug from the new Loloi x CLJ collection, I thought it would be perfect. It’s warm and adds a little texture and pattern without being overwhelming. It feels more complementary to pieces already in the room.

I’m often asked about jute rugs and how they feel underfoot. Jute rugs used to be notoriously scratchy, but with the rise of their popularity in the last 10-15 years or so, designers and manufacturers have been blending the fibers and/or weaving them in a way that makes them soft and comfortable to walk on.

There is a blue/green colorway in this rug HERE, which was very tempting, but I decided to go with the wheat/sage colorway.

I also added the Euro-size Polly pillow in ivory from the same collection.

(The white quilt is the Seychelles Dove White Quilt from Annie Selke. The gold quilt and shams are from Annie Selke as well, but are sadly retired.)
I like adding European-sized pillows (26″ square) to a bed for a couple of reasons. Visually, they provide some height difference from standard pillows. Second, they are a nice size and shape to provide support when you’re sitting up in bed. Even if the guest room decorating isn’t done, I want to provide all of the comforts and practicality I can.

And, I added this antique box I bought a couple of weeks ago when Jeff and I hit some local antique stores. We were shopping specifically for antique frames for my paintings (and we found a bunch of great ones), but I couldn’t resist this antique box, likely from the late 1800s. It’s a little wonky, with some warping on the lid, but it has beautiful wood grain and a great patina. Best of all, it was only $14.

I have a soft spot for old boxes (among other things). They are handsome, elegant, and endlessly useful.

Can I edit that last sentence by changing one letter and then use it in my dating profile to describe who I’m seeking? “I have a soft spot for old boYs (among other things). They are handsome, elegant, and endlessly useful.”
Sorry, I couldn’t resist…
Love the additions to the room. Cozy is as cozy does.
This made me laugh out loud and is a very appropriate tag line for a dating profile! 🙂
Hahaha, that’s classic!
Just wondering if your cats scratch on the jute types of rugs? I worry that it will remind mine of their scratching post & will feel good to sink their claws into? Please advise!
My male cat has scratched an entire spot of my round jute rug in the kitchen. I am heartbroken as there is no way to fix it.
Thanks for responding, that’s what I was afraid of! 🙁
The interesting thing is neither of my cats mess with my jute rugs, and I have several. They do scratch on two of the wool blend rugs, though, so that’s really strange. I think it really depends on the cat.
Love the room! Especially the addition of the rug!
I love the new update. I agree with changing out the pink rug. The new rug is great. I also “get it.”….as even though the room is not a priority it still needs to be “set”. I know some people just shut the door…??? I can’t do that.
Sometimes, that’s just what you have to, but I have pieces to fill the room and make it look nice, so it can be a good guest room without being done!
Marian,
The wheat-sage is perfection. It brings life and compliments the other elements. And, good eye for the $14 box. Don’t you wonder what different items it held over its lifetime?
Hugs for the week,
Diney on Mercer Island
I absolutely love that box and new rug.
Of course the gold quilt is discontinued! It’s perfect for my bedroom. 🙂 The hunt continues. P.S. The link for the white quilt takes you to the Amazon pillow listing.
Oh, I’ll fix that! And yes, I get so many questions about that quilt. It does fade after being washed, so that’s probably why they discontinued it. It is lovely, though.
Please share details on this gorgeous bed!
It is the Vienne Upholstered bed from Restoration Hardware and I reupholstered it in the yellow stripe. Sadly, that model is no longer available, but you might be able to find one used somewhere.
Thank you so much for the info! It is just perfectly lovely!
