Soooo… I was at a wedding yesterday and then we drove home into the wee hours of the night. I woke up this morning to check on my blog and I see that quite a conversation had been going on about bloggers (me specifically) and sponsored posts. I have been sitting here for a while, trying to figure out if and how I was going to address it. I think in this case, I just need to be a big girl and recognize that putting myself out there means that sometimes I’m going to receive some constructive criticism and that’s okay.
So, instead of making a case for sponsored content, which many of you did already, I thought I would make promises to my readers about how I will approach sponsored posts.
- I know I have gained your trust as a blogger and I take that seriously. I don’t ever want to take advantage of that.
- I will always let you know when the content is sponsored.
- I will only share about companies and products that I really love.
- I will not allow my voice to be drowned out by the voice of my sponsors and advertisers
- I will continue to share sources of products I love even when I don’t make money, like the hemp fabric I like and antique grain sacks.
With all of that said, I actually had an epiphany a few months ago that I needed to take my own brand and product lines more seriously than I have been. A part of that was getting new product photographs, being more strategic, and not being afraid to use and talk about my own products. Another part of that is clearing my plate of a lot of sponsored content, so I can focus on those things. Anyway, I have several commitments I need to follow through on over the next few months, but I’m going to be taking on a lot less in 2014.
There are a lot of exciting things in the hopper…
This has nothing to do with DIY or home decor or anything, but my boys were in my cousin’s wedding and I just had to share some pictures.
My cousin, Ali, was the beautiful bride.
She is the daughter of my Aunt Susan, who brought all of that amazing fabric and sold me her dining room set. She gave me lots of furniture when I first started my business and has always been a big cheerleader for me.
And she’s gorgeous!
She has a special relationship with my boys, especially my eldest…
The boys were great…mostly.
…and walked down the aisle like champs.
You can see some pictures of the reception on Instagram, if you’re interested.
Tomorrow, I need to hit the ground hard to get ready for the Chapel Market. It’s in just two weeks! AH! I have some tutorials coming up too, including how I worked with a dresser that’s been giving me all sorts of attitude…

Wow your oldest boys really looks like you! Looks like you had a lovely day. As far as the sponsored posts go I don’t mind them at all. I like finding out about new products and companies I might not otherwise hear about. Good for you for having such a successful blog that these companies want to work with you.
Thank you Marian! Well said. It’s nice to be listened to rather than made to feel petty because you have a dissenting opinion.
Chris — thank you for being gracious and listening to Marian’s response. I think there’s a lot of folks out there that think of Marian like a daughter or a little sister and were defending her in a way that was almost familial. It’s a fine line that the “big bloggers” walk and invariably there will be days that some of us feel they’ve wandered too far from where we think the line should be. I believe Marian does it as well as anyone.
Thanks, Chris. I do take comments to heart and appreciate your opinion. 🙂
You are a very sweet person to handle this with such grace. We all should slow down and take a breath before we say things.Life is much too short.I look forward to everything you share withus. I am much older than you, and would have loved to do everything you do.It brings pleasure to me when I read of your trips and shoppingtrips.Would have loved to go to theshows whenI was able to travel. Enjoy your life, enjoy your family, and always enjoy the wonderful talents God has given you.
Marian — thank you for taking the high road in your response to the sponsored post kerfuffle AND to sponsorships in general. Nice — both you and your response.
I have only been reading your blog for a little over a year. Those followers of blogs simply need to realize that in order for you to continue doing what you do, as well as the other bloggers that are popular, sponsors are all a part of it. I can say that I am perfectly fine with any sponsored posts and only wish I was smart enough to have caught on to blogging in order to have the opportunity to experience sponsors wanting me to share their product. You are a lovely woman, and I look forward to enjoying any and all upcoming posts from you!
Or maybe we DO realize that and prefer not to follow the blog anymore because it has become more about sponsored ads and less about re-making thrift shop finds.
Of course, MM has a right to post whatever she wants on her blog. But it is my right not to follow the blog any longer when I don’t enjoy it.
That said, I’ll come back next year to see if MM has followed through with her promises. I hope she does. I miss the old Miss Mustard Seed.
Marian- I am so sorry that you were subjected to any negative comments. I read your blogs faithfully every day, mainly because I feel that have a strong connection to the things you like and how you present them in such a beautiful manner. I have been reading your blog for so long and have tried several of the products you have mentioned and always have had positive results. My conclusion: I trust what you bring to the “table” and appreciate that I don’t have to worry about the quality of something you recommend. I also am happy that you save me time and money by weeding out products for me.
I know that you won’t turn this blog into a commercial enterprise only; but I know that you are in a small business to earn a living. My only suggestion is that you turn a blind eye to those that are critical of your desire to grow your business and your brand, and stay true to your objective to bring us new ideas, vintage items displayed in simple but beautiful displays, and the knowledge of how we can achieve those same looks. Your writing and storytelling are what make those products become alive and attainable for all of us. Do not feel shame when you share those good things. Loyal forever-Phyllis
Marion, I haven’t read today’s blogs so I’m not up to speed on the current conversation. I will say that I respect your voice in the market and appreciate your honesty and integrity. I have struggled for months about whether to start accepting sponsors. I personally don’t like the look of a blog that’s covered with ads. But at the same time, I have followed links to find great products that are consistent with my design aesthetic. It’s a tough balancing act. I have always appreciated your honesty about your struggle to find balance. This is just another place to find it. On another note, it is nice to see your boys’ sweet faces. You sure can’t deny your oldest!
Gosh what sweet boys! Your oldest is just like you. Beautiful pictures!
Very gracefully put. And your oldest does look exactly like you. Such sweet pictures.
You know. It really doesn’t matter to me if you do a sponsored post or unsponsored. I come here everyday to read you. To see what you are doing in the new, in the old, or the in between. I have to say that i’m happy with the stuff I’ve purchased because you mentioned it. I’ve read this blog long enough to know that you work really hard, you given us video’s to help us along in making our pieces look great, and really good information on products that are the best to use. And for that I thank you!
We each that have to work make our living doing what we have or need to do. Ads or whatever doesn’t bother me in the least. I pray you succeed in an amazing way and I believe you will and are doing so.
Jake’s a Girl *who totally agrees with Phyllis* 🙂
Gorgeous pictures. Your Aunt Susan was as pretty as the bride. As far as the sponsored posts go, I sure see nothing wrong with having sponsors….it’s a business. And of course you have to advertise for them or they wouldn’t sponsor you. I don’t see the problem. You’ve had a perfect balance all along, I think.
P.S. One more thing….. people that complain about the sponsored posts are probably the same type of people that complain about not getting the shows that they want to watch, when they want to watch them on hulu.com….which is a completely free service. I don’t get it.
Marion, that was addressed with perfect poise.
Oh, blast my clumsy fingers…of course I meant Marian.
I am a fairly new blogger that has been reading your blog now for years {and now a follower} I did not read what was written nor do I intend to.
You have a talent and you built on that, the successes that you have received were blessed upon you because of your hard work.
That being said whatever blessings you choose to accept & promote are well deserved.
Most of us do paint furniture I would imagine {not sure, just guessing} and when one does exceptionally well some tend to have feelings that sometimes are less than stellar.
God Bless & keep doing things how YOU want to do them as you do not owe anyone anything or an explanation as I’ve always seen you conduct yourself with grace & dignity!
Much more success to you!
Blessings…
Vicki
Your boys look very sweet in the photos, and yes, your oldest certainly does look like you! I think that every blogger has the right to do as they wish on their blog. If they wish to accept sponsors, so be it. However, I do see some blogs with pretty high traffic, and I can’t imagine that they actually, truly believe in some of the stuff that they sponsor! That said, we readers also may do as we please, and I find myself dropping more and more blogs that feature way too many sponsors and devote so much time to branding and yearning to be the next Martha or Rachel Ashwell. That’s not why I read a blog. For every brand chasing, sponsoring blog out there I have dropped, there is another new one without all those attachments, which reminds me once again why I enjoy reading of simple pursuits and simple joys. Best wishes to you, but I anticipate I may be replacing Miss Mustard Seed quite soon.
Your boys are adorable..I enjoyed my boys so much at this age, now they are 18 and 20. I hate that you even had to make the last of this post. Keep doing what you are doing…I check in on you at every post Lovely eye candy and inspiration to “do it your selfers”. Do not forget that! Do not under estimate your abiity to inspire some one . Those that complain are missing the blessing do not let it steal your Joy. Hugs..Sheryl
Your aunt and cousin are gorgeous ladies! Your boys looked absolutely darling in their little tuxedos. Your cousin and her husband are such a handsom looking couple.
The pictures are so cute – thanks for sharing. And, congratulations on your sponsorships!! I haven’t seen a link or product I wouldn’t love to have!
Thank you for sharing the photos of the wedding! Your boys are adorable and your cousin and aunt look stunning. As for the rest, just keep doing what you’re doing and be your wonderful self. I trust you to chose the sponsors that resonate with you. I love your products and your blog!
Bravo Marian…enough said!
Wow! Miss a day reading your blog, and you can miss a lot!
Marian, I’ve read your blog from almost the beginning and have been fascinated by your journey — which is I am sure hard-won, and also well deserved.
Bravo to a Mom who’s worked so hard achieve a dream.
To those who don’t like sponsored posts — well, don’t read them.
🙂
I sincerely hope you weren’t hurt by any of the comments.
If you were — consider yourself hugged.
And BTW your boys are ADORABLE, and your whole family looks gorgeous.
All best wishes, Cass
I clicked over to the comments to see what all the commotion was about after reading this post.
I had a very harsh email less than 2 weeks ago from a woman who assumed that I was making thousands of dollars every month from blog sponsors and thought I was lying about our situation (my blog is for those who are struggling to put food on the table–and our situation has been just that the last 7 years, as our income has been cut again, and again, and again). She thought the advertisers on my site must be making me lots of money.
However if she really read my site she would see that I don’t have sponsored posts and I don’t have a bunch of advertisers. Not quite sure where she thought those sponsors were. . . .
I’m in a different situation than other bloggers. My target audience is people who don’t have money. Things aren’t just a little tight for them. They don’t even know how they’re going to buy food. I write to help them, and serving others in our situation is a blessing to me in so many ways–just not financially. Sponsors aren’t calling me, because they know my readers are broke.
I get excited when my readership grows, because it means I am helping more people find ways to put good food on their table, make Christmas and birthday gifts repurposing items that they already had, and giving hope to those full of despair.
I love reading your blog. I have to be careful of reading home décor blogs, because I know I don’t have the money for projects. I know that I can quickly become envious if I am not careful, and I know that envy is a sin–my sin. I have found it is best to limit what I read; yours is the only home decorating blog that I have in my feed.
I’ve been asked why I don’t have a blog that would make me money, where I would write about something else. It’s not what I write. I write for another reason, and I’m okay with that. I get a lot of pushy people insisting that I should be making a bunch of money from my website, but again, they miss who I am writing to.
I’m grateful for the beauty that you inspire in my own life. Thank you for all that you do!
Oh, I love, love the Prudent Homemaker blog! A blessing!
And Brandy has absolutely gorgeous photos too!
Thanks, Brandy. Just five years ago, we were in that position. It was a sweet time of God’s provision, but I had to take a cleaning job (mopping floors with my 3 month old strapped to me) in order to help make ends meet. I understand and appreciate readers who come from that place and I don’t to ever give the impression that I’ve gotten too big for my britches. I still love a good bargain and pride myself on decorating my home with about 85% used stuff or things I’ve traded or traded up for. Anyway, I love your message and I’m sure it’s a blessing to a lot of people.
Tell your Aunt Susan I love her dress!
I have a thing for grey at the moment (I never had a color hit me like this before; it’s been interesting for me!)
Have you ever dyed cotton dropcloths before? If so, did you do anything to set the colors, or where they fine if you later had to wash the cushion? I want to dye them grey; it would hide the stains from 7 children better than the natural color does.
So, THAT’S why you were here in Raleigh yesterday. Sorry it was/is so miserably hot and muggy. Fall is returning Tuesday. C’mon back!
Hi Marian,
I have been reading a lot of blogs for the last year and I must say your blog is one of my favorites. You must be well respected and loved by many of us. I see your decorating influence in MANY of the other blogs. I am in my early 50’s and followed Martha Stewart for many years. She introduced us to Ironstone, painting furniture as well as collecting and decorating. I see you do many things that we older gals have been doing for years but with a current twist. 🙂 As I mentioned, Your influence is in many blogs I read and I know that becasue I see your exact curtains (the blue ones), ironstone, grain-sack items as well as cow pictures/paintings, painted furniture with your milk paint, etc etc … in them. People like to copy your style becasue it is classic and they love your blog and your ideas. You have given me some great ideas and I have found myself getting some of the same things as you have myself. (Joss and Main’s talc, tufted ottoman and some grain sack items.) You have also let me in on some great deals from decor steals, and all the other places that I would not have known about.
So… Keep on going as you have been, there are plenty of us out here that love you, and want you to succeed! Your son’s are soooo sweet they look like little angels. 🙂
Blessings
Marian, I’m an occasional reader but when I pop over, I enjoy every one of my visits. I’m also an occasional blogger but now blog more regularly since I retired. I have no idea how sponsored posts work and I’m way……..behind when it comes to social media. I blog as a creative outlet and a way to practice photography and meet other people who love to paint everything in the house. I’ve seen new bloggers with lots of stamina, great ideas and tutorials grow at an astounding speed. They work hard. For full-time bloggers (so called bigger bloggers) it takes a lot of work, organization, drive and talent to consistently come up with creative ideas and things to talk about. I don’t know what comments people left for you but boy you handled it with grace and style and I respect that. For bloggers like yourself it’s a career (like you said you’re an accidental entrepreneur) Your readers trust you. You work hard and run a household too. What the heck is wrong with writing about a product that you believe in and getting paid for it?
The wedding looked beautiful and your oldest sure resembles you. I think I need to come over here more often for some inspiration.
You have precious boys and I know you are very proud of them. They both look so handsome in their tuxes. I love your blog and your book and have been so inspired by you. Keep up the great work!
Graceful, you are!
And I don’t even know if your intent was this, but I hope it was–You are right, these beautifully personal pics do not have anything to do with DIY, and yet we look at them, and adore them and you for sharing them with us. Just as we adore your sharing of companies that fit with your style.
And by the way, lest we not forget as part of the compensation you received for your post about Soft Surroundings, one lucky reader will also be “compensated” with a giveaway, which is more generous than Soft Surroundings had to be.
MMS – I’m a new reader in 2013 and I really love your fantastic ideas and style. I also have loved some of the sponsored posts like decorsteals.com. That being said, by far my favorite posts are those about your project ideas and products and your home. Like the reader who commented I also felt yesterday’s sponsored post was a little “off” from your usual style. But let me say THANK YOU – for your kindness in the way that readers comments were handled. It’s very rare in the cyber world to hear someone take a criticism that gracefully. I trust your recommendations more so now than before. You ethics make you stand out – I believe that your honesty shines through everything you do and in the end makes you a bigger success.
Marian, I know that it took a lot of work to get where you are today, and I commend you! Speaking personally, and perhaps echoing other sentiments here, I do find that I must be more and more selective in my blog reading because there are so many from which to choose, and there is limited time to read them! I too have dropped some of the “big” bloggers because I just could no longer put up with all the sponsored ads. I would much rather see a blogger post less frequently and have original and meaningful content. Now, I know that is easy for me to say as a non-blogger because original content must be difficult to summon up again and again. But readers can’t help feeling a bit “used” when sponsored content is continually thrust upon them. I am sure you will arrive at that happy medium.
M – you are a star and it would be impossible for you NOT to grow and change. And you’re right, when you’re a leader people are going to want to pull you down. That being said, all I want to add is that I was a little bummed about Soft Surrounding’s prices. Whatever you buy, I buy. You are the style guru. With less free time than ever I’m now willing to buy a piece now and then that I haven’t redone myself and I always nod my head in agreement when you point out the reasons you felt personally persuaded to invest in a good piece yourself. Sometimes, you just have to. But their whole presentation seems far from center for this original, diy on a budget follower. I was kinda dismayed. But I’ll always be a reader. Best to you and geez, while you’re at it, give your Mom a hug. It’s so evident you were raised well. 🙂
wow I don’t always read every comment so glad I missed that one. As readers we are very protective of blogger stars I think, so as many have said you really handled this in the best possible way. Personally I love Soft Surroundings but mostly for ideas way out of my thirft store ,Wallmart, Target price range ha ha . I am not a huge fan of the popup adds that obliterate the content of a blog . But a sponsered post is ok . It’s your dang blog after all. Also a number of yrs ago I was reading comments on a blog and it got really nasty! so address it and move on you are lucky to have such a loyal following. I have never been disappointed. And your boys are dang cute
Marian,
Thank you for listening and your response. Often a dissenting opinion is ignored and dismissed or the individual is belittled. I am happy that you did none of this and turned it into a learning experience and we have moved on.
I am looking forward to seeing more of your product line, your projects and another book (maybe ?).
Vanessa
First of all, your sons are adorable.
Second, I love your blog and wouldn’t expect you to put in all this time and effort if there were no financial incentive. Do we complain that authors sell books…NO!
Third, please keep doing what you do. It makes lots of people happy.
Hi Marian,
I am a long time follower of your blog. To me your blog is about several things, but most importantly, I believe you provide inspiration. For soul, home and family.
You inspire creativity, whether your post is sponsored or not 🙂 Your photographs of your home are inspiration to “change it if you don’t like it or it doesn’t suit your purpose or your style changes”. You’ve taught me I CAN let go of that piece of furniture, I will find something I like as well or better.
Your tutorials about photography, paint, slipcovers, etc… show your generosity
You are an inspiration in faith, family, homemaking and courage. You put your self out there and open yourself up to strangers. There are lots of us out here who feel that you’re a friend and mentor and refer to you by first name.
Although you don’t know me, I am so proud for the successful business you have grown in such a short time. You have inspired me to Move Mountains in my Home. Your message will never be lost through the message you bring, regardless of the ads on your blog.
Keep inspiring and working your magic! Can’t wait to see your treasures at the Chapel Market!
Julie
That first pic of your boys standing there with their hands in their pockets is adorable. They are both so cute!
As for all the rest of that you have nothing to apologize for, nor do you owe anyone an explanation, even though you were kind enough to give one. People need to realize that most blogs these days are geared to business purposes.
My mother always said: ‘If you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all.” I think it’s a good rule to try to live by. Even on the internet!
Maggie
The wedding ~ It all looked sooo lovely! And the church is so beautiful! Sponsored posts ~ I am not minimizing this at all for people who feel so strongly about it, there are just some things I don’t concern myself with if it doesn’t involve me personally. Due to a chronic illness I cannot take on extra stress. So with that said, let me quote my husband when, sometimes, he feels that no matter his answer to me he”ll be in hot water, “I have no opinion.” 🙂
I haven’t read all of the comments, but I can imagine…
People are going to be jealous of your success and happiness regardless of how hard you’ve worked. They are going to say things under the guise of other things, but they really are just envious. You are in an enviable position. Regardless of how much you obtain stay humble and kind. I’m reminded of this when I see a child that’s been given everything and is now an adult and they just want more and more or they are just lazy. In contrast, there are children that have been given what they needed and worked hard. And they appreciate the little things and big things. I think you’ve got all this covered.
I honestly bought a roll of frogtape because of you(I do hate paint bleeds and figure I can go back to the Blue if need be), your blog, your call. I reckon I trust your word but am individual enough to make decisions. Your boys are adorable, and agree the oldest is you, youngest your hubs:) What doesn’t kill you will make you stronger….
I don’t envy you that ride back home…At least you did it at night through DC. The boys are cutie pies! What a perfect day for a wedding! I saw this pillow in Oliver & Rust’s Etsy store & it reminded me of you…

Beautiful wedding pictures and your boys were so handsome in their tuxedos. I like the approach you took to the “sponsored posts” criticism. You handled it with grace instead of going on the defense. BTW…You had lots of fans praising your MMS milk paints at the Marburger Farms show this past week.
Just to let you know that I am a new follower- found my way over here through reading Betsy Speert s blog. I was amazed at the brouhaha I found.Tempest in a teapot?
Feel free to attract as many advertisers as you can manage, as I am pretty sure that I can ignore the ones I don’t find useful.I did like the furniture on Soft Surrounds- and love that chair! You can teach us how to replicate it on the cheap with the perfect paints and fabric .
Marian, you are one classy lady.
Marian! I want you to know that you are a true inspiration to me. For years I worked continuously for people who were hard to work for/dishonest business people etc and wondered why I didn’t quit. After a year of following you and Karen at Redoux Interiors and experimenting on my own, I had learned enough to strike out on my own. And here I am, emancipated from an especially awful boss and working for myself. At 23 I’m still new to furniture refinishing and repurposing and have a lot to learn, but you gave me the courage to strike out on my own. For that I can NEVER thank you enough. My stress level has decreased tenfold. My husband and I get more time together and he helps me with my projects. Overall my life is fuller than it has been, and I thank you for giving me the hope, courage, and inspiration to fully rely oneself and my ability to learn and master a skill.
Great post Marian, just as others have said, you handled conflict with poise and grace. Your blog is one of the few I still follow, you have amazing ideas and are always willing to show us how you accomplish your diy projects.
The wedding was lovely, and your sons are as cute as they can be.
Marian,
I am not sure what this is about, but this is your blog site and I would not worry too much. You do a beautiful job and my day would not be complete without visiting your site each day. I only wish you posted several times a day! Lol! You rock and don’t worry!
How precious are your boys!?! I so wish that mine were young again. LuvU, LuvUr blog.
Marian, so sorry to hear about the negative comments. That stinks. I LOVE your blog and all your milk paint. You are such an inspiration to all of us who love creating and painting furniture. I also have to tell you how cute your boys are. They looked so adorable in the wedding. x
It amazes me the things people write. It’s your blog, your company. You can choose what and who you have in it. I don’t know why people think you wouldn’t get compensation for sponsoring companies. You should be growing i your business.God never said we should always be without or struggle for everything. He wants us to thrive and have abundance.Do not change your approach to your blog. It’s why you have grown..Because of your God given talent. You have a wonderful blog.My favorite.
Rock on Marion!!!!!!!
Marian,
Thank you for sharing the pictures of your sweet boys. My 3 boys were in weddings well over 20 years ago and I still love to look at the pictures…there’s nothing like a little boy in a tux! Now I’m just waiting for them to someday wear a tux at their own wedding!
-Mary
P.S. Keep on looking up and into your heart!
Yours boys are just precious, and they did a great job helping their cousin marry! The pictures of the wedding are fabulous.
I didn’t see or hear anything about sponsored posts but I do want to say that I admire you off the charts for the way you’ve professionally handled it here in this post. Thank you for being a role model.
Mary
What a beautiful family you have! Looks like it was great fun.
About your sponsored content…I think you have always been more than fair. I look forward to your new plans.
Marian,
Just know that you are loved and respected! Follow your heart…I found your blog last year and went back and read every post, and I will continue to read, sponsor posts or not. You are inspiring a generation of young women (and their mothers;) )! Please let the criticism roll off your back…as my 19 year old son says…”Haters gonna hate” and “Don’t judge”; words we all need to remember sometimes! Hug your beautiful sons…they grow into adults so fast!
Great comment, Robin! I also read all Marian’s older posts when I found her, about two years ago!
I love your son’s comments, lol! He is right! People only give what they have!
I have a 19 year old son, too. My baby 🙂
Cheers,
Claudine
Egad! Life has way too much to offer to waste time with complaints. Amen!
The boys, the bride, the groom, your Aunt……….lovely……now things like that are worth a comment……Amen again!!
I love this. Well said, Robin … and son!
xx
Yes, I too say, Marian don’t give the criticism a second thought. I guarantee u whoever criticizes just wants what you have. You are established, cared about and continually blessed and favored. These people are obviously jealous so take comfort in knowing God has directed and is still directing your footsteps. Do not let the criticism take root. We love what you do and, yes, you continue to inspire us all—even the big meanies!:)
Marian,
I rarely read comments, I think it is because I’m most interested in what you have to say. You have had so much impact on me and inspired me to kick start my own creativity that had laid dormant for years. It makes me happy to imagine and chip away at a project in my spare time. I’ve learned so much from you.
I had the pleasure of meeting you in Petaluma and know youare generous, genuine and kind. Good things happen to good people. Congratulations! I’m thrilled for you and can’t wait to see what’s next for you.
BTW ….Love the chair!
I have followed this blog for a long time. What I have seen is someone who is hard working, extremely creative and where MMS gets all that energy boggles my mind. I have seen her blog grow, her business and success blossom. If she reaps some benefits along the way, she has earned them. I don’t know her, but I can read and appreciate all that hard work. Along the way, she has also served as an inspiration to many – myself included, and takes the time to teach us how to do things ourselves.
I have seen a blog or two that seem to just flaunt what they have – material things. This blog is not one of those. Yes, we are shown beautiful material things as well, some of them may be beyond our means (speaking for myself), but MMS goes well beyond that in her blog and the things she writes about. She talks about things have have no price tag and mean so much more.
Marian, when I saw the photos of the chair (before reading the content of the post), I thought it’s one of those chairs that you’ve reupholstered and repainted. Seriously. That just means your work is that good! Kudos for taking all the criticism with a cool head. You go girl!!!
Gracefully handled (no surprise). Well done! You already know that the path to growth, personal and professional, comes with bumps. From what you choose to share here, it seems you are generally finding the formula for balance that works for you and your family and your vision for your products. If it feels right and fits your inner sense of integrity, it will all be fine. FYI, I don’t paint furniture; I value your blog for your creativity and the genuineness of you. The ever-better photos are nice, too. 🙂
I must have missed the conversation about your sponsors… i actually think your whole blog page looks beautiful, great colors, well laid out, and great photography… and i don’t find the ads visually distracting at all. I’ll have to go find and read the conversation.
Your Aunt is gorgeous, i love the color of her dress with her beautiful skin and coloring. Your boys look adorable. The oldest guy looks just like you! The bride looks exquisite, her dress and veil are so pretty and airy. Great photos too… did you take those?
Cindy
Yep. 🙂 I meant to watermark them, but didn’t.
I want you to know that I feel you’ve always stayed very true to your mission which is all you owe us. You’ve stated your mission and invited us in to it. You’ve not used it as a guise or taken advantage of us. You should be commended on how you have handled sponsorship!
I adore you and support you whichever direction you take! I love your posts, sponsored or not, because I know you are always sharing from your heart. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2014!! SO EXCITING! Good luck getting ready for your next market!! ~Hugs, Jennifer
Am also surprised about the critical feedback. You’ve always been forthright about sponsors, etc. Also took a look at the top of the blog, yep, still says Miss Mustard Seed. Your blog, your decision regarding content. I would much rather congratulate you on all that you’ve accomplished. It is easier to pay attention to the few dissenters vs. the majority. That’s human nature. Do not give them a minute more of your time. Persevere. Am waiting to see what’s next. Your talent is an inspiration.
I am really new to you and so excited about your blog and the opportunity to try your products. There is a place near by that will be having classes soon and looking forward to working on two pieces for a den.
I find your blog to be inspirational!
gorgeous catholic church!!!
I’ve learned so much from you. You will always be one of my favorite bloggers!
I haven’t seen the ‘conversation’…probably a touch of the green eye! In a way you can’t blame them for being jealous of you, as your blog is a constant source of pleasure, interest and inspiration, and if I ever visit the U.S. again I’m definitely coming your way. Also, your boys are adorable!
Keep up your good works. Ignore those hateful people. They must be leading miserable lives. I read and enjoy your blog, sponsors or not.
O.K, where are the pictures of you at the wedding? Now
that your are rocking that new body, I know you wore something
great. Please post pics!
Oh Marian….My mom always told me that people who criticize are unhappy….sponsors see how much you inspire people……continue the great work you are doing…And on to the important things…your boys are just adorable!!…and what a beautiful bride and handsome groom…Family is special and I am glad that you have that special relationship with your aunt..I had one too and miss her every day!
To the only “womance” I have…
I’ve kind of been out of the loop and I don’t know what all of this is about and I’m not even sure that I want to research it to find out! You know I think you are fantastic and I respect you a great deal! Ultimately this is your blog and whatever content you choose to put in it is your business and no one else’s!!!! Just keep on being you!
Marian,
You should never have to apologize for doing sponsored posts. Blogging is your living and part of that is doing sponsored posts and advertising. You are always open and upfront about it and that is what counts. Please do not let anyone bring you down. You do an amazing job and have many supporters.
Well I must have missed those comments on sponsorship as well – I generally don’t read comments, just your blog. I’ve been following you for, maybe, a year (time flies when you’re as old as me!)…and enjoy every single blog. I’ve actually gotten more into decorating than I have been for many years – all because of you 😉
Thanks for giving so many of us new dreams!
Marian, I absolutely love your blog and am in awe of your beautiful painting and the decoration of your house. Whenever you have a sponsored post for a product you use and believe in, I think it’s wonderful. You have found something that works well (whether you have tried similar products or not) and I trust your judgment in all things décor, so to my mind you are saving your readers the work and expense of trying other similar products that may not have good results. I would much rather buy a product that you have tested and know works well, than try a product I know nothing about. Also, your readers can’t expect you to continue the blog without making money from it. It is a business, so it is to be expected that you will have sponsored posts. So as long as you say they are sponsored and give your true opinion, I don’t see how any readers can object. Even if I’m not interested in a product, I don’t care if I took a minute to see the post is of no interest to me, because the majority of your posts show beautiful inspiration pieces and/or give tutorials, so your blog is so very worth reading daily. Thanks for your ongoing inspiration. Your blog is eye candy to me and I look forward to seeing more in the future!
My daughter is getting married next spring. Where did your aunt get her lovely gray dress?
I have been reading your blog for many years. Your partially responsible for motivating me to start my own blog (I don’t have it anymore). I have your book, LOVE your paint and I’m a really big fan. To tell you the truth Marian, I’m a little bit green around the edges because I would so love to have the business that you have. I call it a “girl crush”.
My point is, you have an amazing business and great success. There are those of us ‘crush’ on you and then there are the haters. I think the people who wrote the negative comments about your sponsored posts are ‘green’ too – they just show it by hatefulness. Just one woman’s opinion.
Marian,
I found your blog this past summer. Like so many others have done, I went back and read every post.
You have inspired me to do some things I would not have done without your inspiration. My husband was so proud of my work and how it turned out. I found a local shop that carries your paint and love to go in to their shop.
Don’t let what someone says hurt, even though that’s easier said that done. People can be unkind sometimes and it does hurt. Just know you are appreciated and valued by the people who read your blog regularly. Your tutorials are wonderful and appreciated and the work you do is inspiring.
So continue to do what you do so well and your faithful readers will continue to be inspired.
Hi, Marian!!!
Beautiful pictures!!!
Your boys are so handsome!!! They grow so fast!!!
The bride looked beautiful and your aunt, too!!!
Hugs
Claudine
Ditto what everyone else has said. Some people get their panties in a wad about things that are of no consequence whatsoever. The internet has given us the “power” to say and do things we might ordinarily not do, which can be good, but can also be bad, like when our efforts are aimed at criticizing or attacking others. You continue on where the Lord directs, my friend, and ignore the naysayers.
Marian, love your blog – love it all and your gorgeous family. I couldn’t care less if a post is sponsored or not, it’s all pretty interesting to me here in the UK! And I love all the photos. Well done and thanks ♥ ♥ ♥
Marian,
I love the wedding pictures, your boys are very adorable in their tuxs and the Bride and your Aunt are stunning!! Thank you for posting the wedding pictures. I looking forward to your tutorials especially the one on the dresser that gave you problems. I am working on a desk that I am little concerned that the desk top is going to be a problem also. This is my second and largest piece of furiture to date – nothing like just diving in head first. I really have no clue what I am doing, I just keep telling myself it is in the ugly stage and hope for the best. I hope to have the desk finished later this week, and keeping my fingers crossed that it will turn out beautiful.
What a beautiful family and a lovely wedding. Thank you for your inspiration. Please continue on your path with grace and joy. I so appreciate you letting us tag along. I hope you are having a better day!
I wanted to say how much I enjoy visiting here and how inspirational it is.
With that said ,it must say something about the person who shares of herself each day with all of us.
thank-you Marion and thank-you for the beautiful shared moments of your family.
Penny
Love your blog and honesty! I look forward to reading your blog everyday and enjoy it very much. You are an inspiration to many of us. Keep up the awesome job you do, superwoman!
Honestly I don’t mind the sponsored blog posts at all. Because if I am interested I will continue to keep reading or choose not. What I do have to say that is becoming more frustrating is the trend I see with bloggers who will do a project and post that project to literally 7 or more boards they have on their pinterest page. Which in turn clogs up my pinterest feed and that is all I see. I completely understand how some bloggers are needing to drive traffic to their sites and pinterest is a great medium to achieve that. Especially if they rely solely on the income from their blog to survive on. I just question the fact that someone can literally post the SAME project to multiple boards. So that is why I am making the choice to only follow select boards of bloggers. Ok that is my only gripe! Love your blog!
Your boys are precious and the oldest looks just like you! Your aunt(M.O.B.—mother of the bride is a knockout in that gray dress!)….and of course, the bride was radiant….cute groom, too!
Marian, I love all you do. It’s such a shame that you wanted to share your good news and others, well, weren’t happy for you. I didn’t see any of the comments and I’m sorry you had to read those, especially after such a joyous occasion as the wedding. Your boys are adorable and the bride and her mother are both gorgeous. What a lovely wedding! You will always have more on your side than those against you. Saying a prayer for you.
Your boys are so adorable in their tuxes. Hope you took lots of pics.
When my 2 were in their cousin’s wedding at age 10 and 14, we took a special picture of them in their tuxedoes with their “Grammy.’ Now that picture resides next to 2 very grown up young men tux pictures from their senior HS portraits. It’s one of those sweet displays moms look at and wonder where has all the time gone.
Gotta go. getting teary eyed!
Loved the pictures!
Good grief! I think you are great. I am just starting to blog and you were the first one that inspired me.
Bless you, Marian. All I can say is “consider the source”!!! Just keep on keeping on – all of us support you and your way of doing things and look forward to many, many more posts, including sponsors!!!
Wow! I guess there is a lot of negativity going around the blogosphere lately! Another blogger I follow is having a similar problem. I am glad to see that you are handling it with grace. Don’t let people get you down, they are just jealous. Love your blog! Still have to try your paint 😉
lauraj
Love you, love your blog, love being introduced to your sponsors. How else would I find some of these awesome people!
xo,
Debbie
Marian, I have never left a post on a blog before but I felt the need to do so today. I am new to the painting community and your blog has been such a source of knowledge. You offer your tried & true techniques thru your tutorials and are always a source of inspiration. I also did not see the negative comments and will not search for them. I very much appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge and I have grown to love your products. Keep on doing what you are doing!
Hi Marian~~~I’m a follower & I love what you do! Thank you for inspiring me & being so generous with your tutorials~~~giveaways~~~ & honesty. I’m happy your business is growing & successful. Sponsor is not a dirty word!! Those jealous ladies should take a look at Proverbs 31 in the Bible. That woman has a business of her own~~~wears beautiful clothes~~~stays up @ night preparing things for her family~~~& lives her faith. Her husband & children are blessed because of her. She is an excellent wife who is far more precious than rubies. Oh! Sounds a lot like you. :0)
Have a wonderful week.
XO, Linda
PS The entire passage is Proverbs 31:10-31. I think it would be wise for all of us to take a closer look.
Amen Linda, I couldn’t have said it better. Thank you for posting this for Marian and for the rest of us to remember how God wants us to be.
Hugs to all
Michelle
Marian,
I love your blog and I will continue to read each and every post. You are an amazing woman and you inspire me daily to take on new projects. As someone else said consider the source. I check out your sponsors also, and I do buy from some of them too. l Keep your chin up, your doing an amazing job.
Hugs, Terri
I too Love your Blog, Your posts are inspiring and helpful. Today’s post was just lovely and well worded. May God continue to bless you as you follow him and after your heart. Remember, He gives you the desires of your heart. He will lead you in the path you should go. Take the time to enjoy them boys because before you know it they will be all grown up and you’ll wonder how it all happened so fast.
Marian, I love your response. It’s wise and kind. In fact, you’ve always treated your readers fair informing clearly about sponsoring and so on, in my opinion. Also, I disagree with those expressing critisism – for example, for me it was a great visual pleasure to see your new and very inspiring chair. I don’t need to be able to afford something to enjoy seeing it and maybe even want to copy some details. I have a feeling sponsored items you blog about just match your style really well. I’m also happy to observe your creativity and very good taste finding new ways, respect the huge amount of passion and effort you put in things you do and wish you all the best in your business 🙂
And now to some readers: just relax, people. The very fact that someone has different opinion and, unlike us, would like the blog to provide the same content as years back doesn’t make the person hater, jealous or so. Simply, not every blog is for everybody, right? 🙂
Thank you for pointing out that just because someone has a different opinion about ‘sponsored posts’, that does not make them jealous or a hater. Different blogs have different ways to handle sponsors — some don’t review products at all but have the display ads, some show and review items they have received in exchange, etc. My preference is the former — I’m not a fan of the sponsored posts. But I’m not a hater, I’m not jealous. I just have enough advertising in my life and would rather read blog posts about projects, or MMS’s own products, etc.
Anyway, a dissenting view from the majority here today, and just wanted to thank you for your kind words.
~Marian~
I too enjoy everything you share with us, and only wish I could do that !! 🙂
You have a lot of women here supporting you, so keep your chin high! If we all admit it one time or another we all wish we had something, some one else has. We need to be content with our own blessings and be happy for others and theirs!! AMen.
Your boys are too cute! And what a lovely bride, I love weddings !
Take care of YOu !
Paula
In.
Marian I don’t know what chatter you refer to; however it is just ‘noise’.
I think you have one of the most informative blogs on the net.
Your business is blooming not just because you are talented; but because of your generous spirit. Your goodness shines through your words and actions…
Certainly you are blessed with many talents; it is how you use your talent that makes you a special person. Love ‘who’ you are.
The boys are handsome little people. Beautiful wedding.
Sending peaceful thoughts your way.
Marian,
I did not catch the discussion about sponsors and am somewhat new to the blog (3-4 months). I personally do not have a problem with the sponsorship at all. If the sponsors are in alignment with your philosophy, why not?
What I really want you to know is receiving emails from you with links to the blog is a little like a missive from an old friend and Christmas everyday!! I am inspired by your work every time I look at it. Keep it up and trust your instincts. They have lead you the right direction so far.
Thanks for all you do!
Susan Mallios
Your Aunt looked so much like my Aunt Rovella Owen!
All I can say is ditto to all of the comments. Your photos are breathtaking – it says so much about your creativity!! I look forward to reading your blogs and I’m still waiting to see what you do with that French settee that you showed us several weeks ago.
Holy moly! your oldest looks just like you!
I was thinking the same thing! They’re both cute! Er. . . handsome.
Do not get the love for strapless and sleeveless wedding dresses. Why are they so popular now? Your cousin can get away with it, as she has a good figure, but they look so bare, like evening/ball gowns.
Such an unnecessary comment in response to a heart-felt post. And whether or not she “can get away with it” in your eyes is irrelevant; you still criticized her choice. Every bride chooses what she feels beautiful in. And if a bride feels beautiful, does anyone else’s opinion really matter?
I feel the same way. You must have to have thick skin as a blogger. So many unnecessary comments. How sad.
I must have missed the whole issue. Anyway I’d just like to say thank you for the years you’ve been posting and sharing your talent. You’re a kind soul with a great sense of humor, humble, and very generous with your knowledge. And your kids are handsome!! I guess this kind of shows you how successful you’ve become when you start to get nasty comments. C
Cheers

Marion, your older boy is just like you and the younger one is the spitting image of your husband. They are so handsome. You are blessed.
Please don’t let people bring you down. I once had a boss that told me when you run at the front of the pack you are going to get hit with the arrows. Keep your head up girl. You have followed your dreams and they have came true so you are doing something right. I look forward to reading your blog and have tried many products you have recommended, I haven’t been disappointed. Be blessed.
Is there anything as lovely as a wedding, so full of promise. I love!!! Your aunts dress! And her daughter looked absolutely lovely. Your boys are just edible. As for the posts I read this morning while catching up on my e-mail, ( I was away for the weekend too) as soon as I saw a bunch of needless foolishness I used the right we all have and clicked on another of your helpful and informative posts.you know what feels right for you, and obviously many of us who follow you do to. Keep the faith and soldier on.
Adorable wedding photos. Beautiful bride and mother of the bride. And your sons look so very handsome!
I must’ve missed all of the hype, but I wouldn’t worry about it.
You are always up front with your endorsements. You always state your disclaimers. You are very fair.
Your blog is very helpful and informative with great pictures!
Your spirit is pure….continue to work hard, and bless us all everyday with your enthusiasm and talent! BTW…boys.Are.Gorgeous.
Thank you for sharing the beautiful wedding photos. Your niece was a beautiful bride (love the dress and veil). Mother of the bride was gorgeous in that great dress. You have many reasons to be proud of your handsome boys, enjoy them while you can. Time goes by so fast, before you know it they are getting married. We just had a family wedding and I kept
For those of us who have been following you for a long time, we know that you are an honorable, straightforward person and I do not have a problem with sponsored posts from you. Not only do you tell us, but you go back and update us on how things are working. Don’t let the negative comments get you down.
Marion,
You’re response to the issue of sponsored posts was perfect! You stayed out of the drama and kept the focus on your business and how you operate it. I, for one, have always been impressed by the fact that you state up front that a particular post is a sponsored one. It’s so respectful of your readers and very much appreciated by moi! I don’t trust easily but I always trust you and I thank you for your integrity, not to mention all the fabulous content (sponsored or not).
Your boys are so darling and the photos are spectacular! I love it that you share your life with us. The stories of your aunt, your grandparents’ house, your vacation, etc. It makes me feel trusted, as well. Thank you for ALL your posts and for inviting me into your life.
Thank you so much for sharing these gorgeous wedding photo’s. I also must have missed the whole drama about sponsored posts, thankfully! I, like many others, LOVE your blog because it’s YOU! Having some sponsored posts is part of running a successful blog and I certainly appreciate your input on these posts. I do appreciate that you don’t endorse something you would neither use nor like. I’d take little or no notice of the negative comments. At the end of the day, this is YOUR blog about YOU and a great many of us LOVE YOU just the way you are!!!! (((HUGS)))
In a nut shell…….You can’t make everyone happy. But, you DO make a great number of your readers so very happy! We love your blog, keep up the good work. And please tell Ali that she was a beautiful bride! I loved the pictures, did you take them?
Yep, that’s very true. 🙂 Yes, I did take the pictures. I exported them without a watermark and was too lazy to go back and put them on!
Perfect reference earlier – Proverbs 31. You are a beautiful inspiration. Thank you for all your wonderful posts, whether DIY or decorating or self improvement. It is YOUR blog, not ours. It is you the sponsors are sponsoring – your influence because of the talents and gifts God gave you that you are using. We are benefitting from you FOR FREE! You do the work, we get the benefit. Pretty nice arrangement for your readership. I pray that you will be blessed for your faithfulness and your attitude. I’m also very happy that you are able to get items for giving your opinion on them. I think they should pay you even more!:) I will return again and again. Thanks again!
It’s apparent already just how much support you have. Although everyone is entitled to their opinions (and some were less tactful than others), people may forget that this blog is about YOUR journey and not necessarily theirs (unless of course they have invested their time and effort to create a blog of their own).
You made made available a wealth of information for FREE, that which you still provide in an ongoing basis. Information for which we would each in the past have paid good money for via books, classes. Now, the internet allows motivated and passionate people like you to share with and inspire the rest of us via your hard work and dedication. It’s a huge commitment to create a blog and come up with continual content day after day (even tending to it while on holidays).
Being sponsored is not selling out, but merely a natural progression of a very successful blog. Companies know there is nothing more powerful than personal testimonies and the blog world can provide both credibility and the wide audience to do so. Through your recommendations you are providing both choice and experience of a product. I have personally ordered products from here in Australia based on your recommendations, and been extremely pleased with them all. You have saved me a great deal of time doing my own research which is yet another benefit provided by you. Receiving compensation from a company whose products you like and endorse (especially when you are always upfront with this fact) is only fair.
I think when we put this all into perspective, it would be impossible to expect to please such a large and growing audience. Negativity will never take away the fact that you have invested so much of your life in the service of inspiring people to creatively improving their homes (and often their well being). If we stop and think just how much your effort has been the impetus for so many people to begin creating and inspiring in their own lives, and be truly grateful for this, it helps us to be thankful for the opportunities that come knocking at your door, instead of wanting to knock you down.
Dear Marion,
You are a class act! Your children are beautiful, may they continue to be a blessing always!!
I agree with the above comments. Especially the comment about being at the head of the pack …you are! Thank you for giving me an outlet for my creativity and business. Your story is true and authentic. There are always people who are jealous or negative. Continue your journey. It is filled with love and kindness. Your boys are so cute.
As a somewhat new follower I want you to know that I love your work, just purchased my first bag of milk paint and fell in love with the chair you posted yesterday. I want one too. If you had not posted it I would never have come across it. I appreciate your sponsored posts and the opportunity to find new things to love. Ignore the naysayers. Every party has a downer. Keep up the amazing work and inspiration.
Personally, I read your blog to learn about products, what to use and when. You always state when it is sponsored.
To people who choose to criticize, blog reading is kind of like television, it is voluntary, you don’t have to watch television and if a blog post bothers someone, they don’t need to read it.
I do love your blog and have learned lots and lots! Just have to point that out.
I am mourning the death of my father. Believe me, I know what is important in life.
Though I did not see the negative comments made on your blog, it is sad to realize that some are so petty. In my opinion, they are jealous and small-minded. Miss Mustard Seed, you are wonderful. Anytime I have had a question, you have helped me. You are a woman of integrity. You are a fair and wise business woman. Thank you for inspiring those who desire to be inspired.
I want to echo what Helen so eloquently said. Thank you for sharing your journey and your talent even in the face of undue cynicism.
Well your boys are gawjuss and in their tuxes they are so handsome; you’re so right about your aunt she’s beautiful and looks so glamorous as mother of the bride.
Although i love my job as a labor and delivery nurse, this weekend made me wish i could just redo furniture for a living, heck i’d go and help you! Lol
Just keep doing what you feel is right for you and your business, we’re blessed and spoiled to have you as our inspiration!
Love it all… The best..one of the best I enjoy….. Hugs, CeCe
You have her eyes…everything and everyone is just plain gorgeous!
What gorgeous pictures – thank you for sharing. Looking at that first picture of your boys together – can’t you just imagine from that picture what they will look like all grown up? What a wonderful picture!
Beautiful Pictures and your boys are just too handsome ,beautiful light eyes
Just to let you know I recently signed up for your email and I look forward each day to read your Blog , I enjoy your technique and wish you nothing but success and keep up the good work for us who appreciate all the effort you put into your blog thank you
Just lovely!
Your sons are so handsome and look as if they added just the right amount of fun to the wedding.
And nope I didn’t read it, don’t care to get caught up in a vortex of drama, your blog is too much fun and I learn so much here that there is no time for foolishness.
Thanks for keeping it real.
Great wedding photos, beautiful bride , those boys are cuties. And yes, just keep doing what you do best. We love you for who and what you are and do. Keep sharing, God will continue to Bless you. Heck with naysayers!
Thank you so much for sharing your life andthe love of what you are passionate about.
Linda from the OC
Love, love, love the wedding pics – the boy’s are adorable! …missed any negativity about bloggers – I’m just all for you! Your decorating style is an inspiration. If a company gives you a product or a few $ towards a product and you get to show us all how to use it (and beautifully I might add), go for it – cheers to you and all the decorating bloggers – lead the way!
I wouldn’t worry about the complainers – you blog is amazing and it isn’t like you are talking about ads for Depends!!!!!!!! (although if you were a big fan of those I think you would keep it to yourself – ha! – no offense to Depends users – I’m ready for them any day). All your products have been helpful and interesting – especially if a person has no idea about these products or that they are available and if they should spend their hard earned money. Do these people complain about Angies List where information is shared????? You are amazing, your blog is amazing, your boys are adorable, your life has soared into the stratosphere in the last couple of years – all good. This did not just come out of the blue. This was dreams, leaps of faith and hard word. Good on ya!!!!!! PS: where did you see all this negative stuff anyway – I don’t see it on your blog responds???? Confused. Would love to see what the haters are saying for a snicker, good laugh or a sad sigh.
Gorgeous photos ** Thank you for sharing them with us. I wish the newlyweds all the happiness in the world. you have a lovely family XX
I did not see the comments criticizing you, but I think you have been very upfront about your sponsered products. I don’t -your boys are so handsome.have an issue with it . I enjoy your blog and hearing about new products and I believe you would not “gush” over something you did not like.Just consider criticism is part of the price you pay for being successful. Love the wedding pictures
Hi Marion, I am somewhat of a newcomer to the world of blogging, etc. I have been reading your blog for only a few months. But I wanted to share with you that it was YOU that inspired me, through your blog, to follow my dream of someday owning a small shop filled with the vintage items I love to refurbish and repurpose. This is such an overwhelming (but exciting) undertaking that without being able to read about others experiences (good and bad), I’m not sure I would have ever had the courage to pursue this myself. Last week, I placed my items in a group shop. Again, thanks to you! I just wanted you to know that you are an inspiration to so many! You’re beautiful, talented, successful, and humble. That, in an of itself, is surely enough to get people talking about you. I love the saying “keep calm and carry on”, so true! Thanks for all you do! Keep up the amazing work!!! P.S. Love the new camera and photos!
BEAUTIFUL !!!! I know boys aren’t supposed to be called beautiful, but they are. The oldest looks just like you!!! How proud you must feel of them and your lovely family. The bride is striking and they make such a lovely couple. You are truly Blessed… but I’m sure you already know that. And by the way, don’t let the ‘little’ comments from the ‘little’ people get to you. You are successful because of YOU!!!
Your boys are so handsome.
Marian,
I hope you don’t let a few negative comments bother you. While I like your “creative” posts better, I respect that you are running a business (with many expenses) and need to make money. I know that you would never do a sponsored post for something that you didn’t believe in and you are very upfront with letting us know if a post is sponsored.
I have received so MUCH inspiration from you –and I have started a very small business painting furniture (and have sold a few pieces!!!). I love your style and have used your furniture for inspiration.
Keep doing what you do
PS your sons are adorable!!
Marion,
I must subscribe to twenty or thirty blogs through Bloglovin. I don’t read them all every day by any means, but I look EVERY DAY to see if you have posted because I get so much enjoyment and inspiration from your blog. There will always be people who feel that any whiff of compensation means a sellout but I feel that you have always been honest about the pros and cons of any product so I’m good with it. You have to walk your own path; it may not be easy, but at the end of the day you only have yourself to answer to. As so many have said, this is your BUSINESS. Do what you have to do to grow it. They can stay or they can go, but you can only please some of the people some of the time. Congratulations on the wonderful job you’ve done with your business and your family and thank you.
Marian,
I started following your blog about a year ago when I was looking for information on milk paint. I did not read the negative comments but I am agreement with so many others who are supportive of you. I LOVE reading your blog. I’m inspired, I smile, I learn. I like learning about new products and appreciate your opinion on them. If I didn’t, I simply would not follow your blog. Period. Do what you want, it’s your blog. I really enjoy the part of my day when I get to see all your creative ideas. Thank you. By the way, those are two really handsome young men you have. Enjoy them, it’s goes by so quickly.
Marian: Who cares if bloggers have sponsors?? I have been introduced to several companies/products due to their ads on blogs. Let those who don’t agree get a life…
The wedding pictures including your boys are wonderful! They are so cute and so serious for their duties! Isn’t it great when your kids make you proud! Congrats to you.
And to the beautiful bride and groom, too. They look amazing and so happy.
You just continue your wonderful blog and enjoy your life. Do what you want and don’t worry about what people expect. You inspire so many people and I hope you have the time to get some inspiration from others…we all need a pat on the back once in a while. So consider this my pat on the back for you! Love ya! {{HUGS}} Joy
1. Your blog is (and will stay at the TOP #1 -of my daily list of blogs to check). I LOVE your stuff.
2. From what I understand of your career & path ,.. You’re the ‘Madame Currie’ of the paint /diy world. Thank God it didn’t kill you! But you are living to see it’s success & enjoy the benefits.
3. Wrap a burlap ribbon around the haters & gift them to their own misery. You GO girl! Sit in that free chair with a nice cup of coffee and enjoy your building success!
I really appreciate when you share something personal, like your handsome boys, with us. What a lovely wedding!
And I appreciate your honesty about sponsored posts and enjoy when you share new things with us that allow you to provide for your family at the same time. Thanks!
You do a wonderful job on your bog, Marian. I love to check in and get new inspiration. I also have your book! I love it that you love Jesus and know this is all from Him! Be encouraged, He is your defender.
I wouldn’t have read the comments, except that you referred to them. People have a right to express a different opinion or point of view than yours. They should not be accused of being “haters” or “unhappy” because they don’t agree with everything you do. I find quite the hypocrisy in people who write in and complain about negative comments and do it in a such a blunt and “negative” manner in order to shut down any discussion that disagrees with them or you. I am not a blogger and don’t know a lot about how you go about it, but if I understand things correctly, bloggers want lots of comments. I would think that is why comments are tallied. I am not writing in because of how I feel about sponsored posts, but I have noticed lately that when I do read comments, people who are not in agreement with you are ganged up on and ripped into. I have enjoyed reading your blog, but I don’t like everything you do. I think the piece you are working on now was prettier before you started working on it. Maybe it will look better when you are done, but I thought the wood was beautiful before. However, it belongs to you and you can do what you want with it. Another thing I was disappointed about was the nose ring. I think the photo you currently have on your blog looks like the classic, All-American woman, When someone says the word “hip,” it makes me think of just the opposite, someone who is all about the latest fad, no matter what it is, and, from reading your blog, that doesn’t seem like who you are. You have written a nice blog, you have provided a lot of good and free information and I appreciate that, but I do sense a different tone lately. It is your nose, your blog, your furniture, and you are certainly free to do as you wish, and others have the freedom to express a different opinion or even stop reading. It seems there is so much controversy on your blog lately. The problem, as I see it, is just as much with your “fans”, who are hateful to anybody who disagrees with you or them. Maybe some of the detractors have a point, but you certainly don’t have to listen.
It’s the lack of CONSTRUCTIVE in posts like this that bug me. If you don’t have anything positive or constructive to add, just like in person … don’t talk/write. If I wouldn’t like something that a person is working on, I’d be quiet & watch. Nobody needs negativity. I missed the whole nose-ring thing … But again – shush yourself up & go look at Pintrest or something.
You rock MMS. God is taking care of you!
Brenda, I appreciate your point of view and think that the majority of all of this discussion is one of the not-so-fun parts of life on the internet. It’s easy to argue, judge, critique, defend, praise, etc. when you can do so in a brief comment, most likely read by people who have no idea who you are. One can leave an opinion with little or no cost to themselves.
I have learned to take all comments, glowing and critical, with a grain of salt. There are people in this world who know me well, know my motives, know my heart in a way that cannot be written in daily blog posts. I know most of the people who leave comments do not know me in that way and can only judge me on the snippets I share.
It is my hope that those who come to read my blog would be encouraged, inspired and filled with ideas they can use in their home. I want that more than any amount of comments or controversy.
I wish you and everyone who reads and comments on my blog the absolute best. 🙂
First: Aunt Susan rocks! Second: Are bloggers like entertainers? They go out of style when the next “hot” thing comes along? Just wondering how it all works in the blog-business world. If you hang in there, you’ll probably become like the Rolling Stones and end up a classic. Let’s hope, shall we?
Your boys look absolutely adorable! Your cousin is a beautiful bride & your aunt is so lovely, too. I love the shot of her kissing your son’s head.
I, too am the mother of two boys & now I am also Nana to 3 precious little boys! Every one of them melts my heart & I kiss their sweet heads & soft cheeks as much as I can!
Just had to say I am grateful for all the wonderful ideas and good things of life, your blog brings to me. You are so generous even though you are a busy mother, wife, daughter, etc. You amaze me with your good heart and many talents you so freely share with all of us who follow your life…
Thank you for sharing the beautiful personal pictures. You def. are your eldest sons mother!!! He is a spitting image of you.
Stay true to yourself. Do not let the haters get in the way of your precious talent. You are an amazing artist.
Enjoy the day,
Alison
What wonderful photos, the top one of your boys is my favourite, they have that old ‘Rat Pack’ cool look, and your cousin is most certainly a very lovely looking girl, the photo of her in the mirror would not look out of place on the cover of Vogue, mind you, you only have to look at your aunt to see her own real beauty
Love the wedding pics…especially precious little boys with smiles! Beautiful boys!
As for the rest of the feed above…Wow…just Wow! Keep up the good work and the inspiration! And keep in mind what I have learned here in the south…sometimes opinions should be kept at that…just opinions! Some thoughts should just stay inside…especially if no good comes out of voicing an opinion!
Once, long ago I posted something negative on a blog I used to read. I immediately wanted to take it down, but there was no delete button for me. I still think about that because I was having a bad day and just blurted out my comment. I still regret my comment and it always keeps me in check when I find myself reacting negatively to any post.
I appreciate that you handled the negative in such a very effective way. You are successful and that can bring out the envy in others.
I’ve learned a lot from your blog and I know that your work is exceptional. By the way, such sweet boys 🙂
Your pictures are wonderful!!! All looked so beautiful/handsome. Were you able to use your new camera and lens? The boys were so cute and the pictures brought our their eyes.. so clear.. love the picture of your son and the rose… such clarity! It is nice to share your life as you are such a part of mine. Feel like family 🙂
Carry on dear, your future is bright and your family is precious!!! Can see so much of you in their faces… you should be proud!!!
A) Thank you for enriching my life at NO COST to me.
B) I rejoice with you that your hard work and staggering generosity have translated into nice things happening for you, your family, and your home.
C) Please keep sharing all of these things, including sponsored posts, because your success makes me happy, too. I’m cheering for you.
Love to you, you amazing woman!!!
Well said!! Carry on!! We LOVE your blog here in Mississippi!!
Your cousin’s husband looks like Tim Tebow. 🙂
I loved reading your post today. I love following your blog and have learned so much. In life there will always be negative comments…it gives balance and reminds us to focus on the good! 🙂 Keep doing what you’re doing! Thank you for your vulnerability!
So sorry but my son is getting married next year and I LOVED your Aunt’s dress. Could you ask her where she bought it/the brand or anything that may be helpful for me to find it! Thank you SO much!
Hear, hear! Would love to know where your beautiful aunt found her dress!
