Painting a Brighter Future

As some of you know, I am a member of the True Value DIY Blog Squad.  There are a lot of perks that have come with that privilege (like freshly painted kitchen cabinets) and it’s been a treat to work with such a great company.

I recently was made aware of the True Value Foundation program that supports schools around the country in need of a face lift.   The program, “Painting a Brighter Future,” asks schools in need to apply for a grant that will give them paint to refresh their school.

The Facts
More than 14 million American children attend deteriorating schools
About 30 percent of rural, 38 percent of urban and 29 percent of suburban schools have at least one building requiring extensive repair
Help Your School
Go to the “Painting a Brighter Future” page to download a grant application
The school must fill out the application and mail it to True Value’s headquarters in Chicago before Nov. 30, 2011, so don’t wait too long!
I know the power of paint and I love that True Value recognizes that and is willing to donate paint to make a difference in local schools.

Tomorrow, my husband (Mr. Mustard Seed?), Mini Mustard Seed and I are taking four pieces of furniture, some accessories and lavender down to restock my space at Lucketts.  We’re going to pop in at Anita’s in Leesburg to have a big, sloppy breakfast first.  Mmmm…  Look for a picture of my biscuits and gravy on Twitter.

As a chosen member of the True Value DIY Blog Squad, I have been compensated for my time commitment to the program as well as my writing about the experience.  However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.

  1. I had no idea true value even did that, I have one just a hop, skip, and a jump from me. Love the painted cabinets.

  2. What a wonderful mission for True Value to take up! I love it when companies give back to communities! Wonderful post- have fun and don't eat TOOO many biscuits and gravy! xo Diana

  3. Your cupboards look fabulous, Miss M. I'm looking forward to seeing your biscuits and gravy. It is all very exciting. Honestly, it sounds super sweet…as does True Value's offer to paint schools in need.

  4. Your kitchen looks great but I am mainly commenting to THANK YOU, for being honest and forthright enough to say you are being compensated. I really dislike feeling bamboozled and that seems to keep happening lately here in blogland about other products.. so again, Thank you for your honesty.

  5. Morning Marian,

How great that a big company is willing to give back to the community like that…I commend them for that.

Enjoy your 'big sloppy breakfast' ;->

I hope my little 'hello' is still on your board…I stopped by on my way home from NY…the shop looks lovely.

PS…OMGosh..you really lug your pieces all the way up those stairs????
    Bless you my dear ;->

  6. Maybe you could volunteer at a school near you who needs a pick me up, and get a team together to do the work too, Kinda' like Habitat for Humanity, but for a school?
I donate 10% of my sales [$0 lately, but what can you do, I do not have a Lucketts and the Flea Market was out this summer with my fathers being so ill/dying] to a horse rescue I think goes beyond good works. It's a great way to pay it forward… when I have any sales that is…

  7. Love the painted cabinets. Would you mind telling me where you found the hardware for the cabinets. I have been looking for drawer pulls for a dresser I have recently painted. Thanks for your help!

  8. That's awesome! Thanks for putting that information out there. The little town in North Carolina I moved to a few years ago, has the worst looking elementary school you've ever seen. When i drove by it, i was shocked that kids went to a school that looked like a condemned building with unpainted wood, unkempt grounds, and old rusty windows. Why in the world would we let the schools our kids attend get in that kind of shape? Schools should be beautiful, with gardens and art. It couldn't cost that much, to show kids that we value them, and education. What the heck?

  9. Good for True Value! It puts a small smile on my face when businesses give back a little. BTW your cabinets are fabulous! You have such a beautiful home. I hope you enjoyed your sloppy breakfast, my tummy's rumbling just thinking about it 🙂

  10. Our community is very fortunate that we don't really need the generosity of what True Value is offering, but sadly, it's still very much needed in so many other areas.

I bet the sloppy breakfast was delish! I'm sure you all enjoyed it. Today I went with my daughter and her class on a field trip to an Amish Community that served the best lunch! Unfortunately, nothing like Lucketts nearby to check out. bummer. I might get there someday, depending on how close the Jeep Jamboree is in PA.

  11. I like True Value just for the knowledge the employees have and I always have questions. The big chains haven't quite got that part mastered yet. But any time a company is involved in helping a school everyone wins.
