MMS Yard Sale!

Yep!  I’m having a yard sale.  For the past few years, I’ve focused on antique sales and the idea if having a yard sale on top of that was too much, so I’ve just been taking stuff to thrift stores and giving things away.  It’s just easier.  A couple of weeks ago, one of my friends asked if I would like to join her in a yard sale she is having.  I’ve been doing a lot of purging lately, so I decided to say yes.

Here are the details…

The sale will be at an old commercial building formerly known as Distelfink.  (Locals will know what I’m talking about!)  The address is 2710 Old Harrisburg Rd, Gettysburg, PA, which is just off the Rt 15 Hunterstown exit.  (Turn west towards Biglerville.)  My dad put up signs that say “Yard Sale MMS” on Rt 15 at the exit.  And just look for this sign…

We’ll be there from 8 am –  about 4 pm on Saturday, August 9, 2014.

I am not selling a bunch of furniture and ironstone, but I am still bringing some nice things, mostly household items and some antiques.

Lots of fabric and pillows (all with feather inserts)…

I love that “live pure” sign and it’s been hanging in our hall for a couple of years, but I’m making way for a large antique map and a gallery wall.

I’m also selling the felt fringe tree skirt I made for HGTV.com…

…a 98 piece set of vintage Lennox Harvest dishes.  They belonged to my Oma, but no one in the family wants them.

I’m also selling the matching crystal.  I think it’s the Fostoria Wheat etched crystal pattern.

…and some glass glitter that is mislabeled, so it will be discounted.  It’s the same thing inside, just has the old label.  And I’m bringing some MMS and MMSMP t-shirts in an “experimental” light gray color.  I don’t like them as much as the dark gray and it’s just confusing keeping track of different colors, sizes, graphics, etc, so I’m just flushing them out.

…this wall organizer/chalkboard from Decor Steals…

…this wall clock, another Decor Steals piece…

…and a Decor Steals indoor/outdoor jute-like rug.

I’m also bringing some antique suitcases from my Opa’s attic, cranberry glass, lots of mercury glass candle sticks, a large original oil painting of a nest in grays and browns and more.  We also have a lot of books on WWII and the holocaust (I did a ton of reading on that subject as I rode the Metro into DC every day) and some Clive Cussler and Tom Clancy books that belonged to Jeff.  I’m sure I’m missing some things!

We aren’t having this sale to make money, but just to get rid of things.  We don’t want to take anything home, so it’s all priced to sell and I’m willing to negotiate.  Make a reasonable offer and it’s yours!  Whatever we don’t sell will be going to the thrift store, so come at 3:00 if you want freebies (if anything is left.)

Also, while I’m trying to get rid of stuff, we have an antique 3/4 sized rope bed with a custom mattress that we would like to sell.  It is a very old, beautiful piece.  The rails actually screw into the headboard and footboard by the ends, which are hand carved to fit perfectly.  You can see a part of it in this picture…

Can you believe I used to have an orange wall in my house?  We had the mattress sitting on a metal frame, but you’re supposed to thread rope through the holes to hold the mattress.  That’s why it’s called a “rope bed”.  A preview of life before box springs.  It comes with a mattress that was custom made to fit the bed.

It’s $75, if you’re interested.   I have to haul it out of the attic, so if you’re coming to the yard sale and want it, just send me an e-mail and I’ll bring it for you.  If you’re local and just want to pick it up at my house another time, that would be fine as well.  Just send me an e-mail (marian@missmustardseed.com.)

Hope to see you at the sale!

This piece will NOT be at the yard sale, so don’t get excited!  I just wanted to share.  My dad just picked it up for me from Craig’s List.  It’s a beauty and solid as a rock.  I think I might be keeping it for my oldest son, but we’ll see.  He might be a little small for such a towering dresser.

I will be painting it, but before natural wood lovers freak out about that, it’s already painted.  Someone did a beautiful job on it with a crackled finish that allows the darker wood underneath to show through.

 I just love empire-style dressers.

Sigh.

Going to try to make it to the sale 🙂

Sounds like it’s going to be the best yard sale ever! I wish I lived closer! Good luck. xx

    3. Teresa

I wish I lived closer! Hope you have a successful day.

When I saw that “Distelfink” sign I wondered what it meant in German. Its a word that describes a stylized goldfinch and is a symbol of good fortune and happiness.

    4. Rita C at Panoply

Your son will grow into that dresser in no time – keep it!

    5. Kelly @ The Moon and Me

Aw man! Even if I left right now, I couldn’t get there in time! I’d love to come to your yard sale! 😀

EVERYONE needs a towering dresser, especially a little boy!!!! Unless you’re going to sell it to me, Please, Please keep it!!! :o)

I would love your grandmother’s china. That would be my “pick”! But I live in Alabama, too fat to travel. Have a wonderful yard sale tomorrow!

      • Kim

Vicki your far/fat mistake made my day! I laughed so hard I cried. That’s the excuse I could use about any long distance travel. ;-D if only I had the nerve to say it.

    8. Debbie Klausing

Teresa, I think Distelfink means good luck. I did a rug years ago that had two birds on it and it was called “double Distelfink” or “twice good luck”.

I wish I lived closer! Your yard sale is going to be amazing! And that dresser is beautiful!

I have been a long time reader of your blog and have even emailed you on occasion to ask for advice/information. I noticed tonight that one of the pillows you have in your yard sale pile has my initials on it. I am also a lover of red and white. I know this is very much last minute, but is there any way I could purchase the pillow (or even just the pillow case) from you? I would love to be at the yard sale tomorrow, but seeing as though I live in California, I don’t think that will be happening.

I saw the Williams & Sherrill bag covering the fabric and sighed. I lived in Richmond VA for a few years and that was my go-to store for all things home. Oh how I miss that mecca of beauty. Nothing like it in OH. Best of luck with the yard sale…

I would love to buy the clock if you wouldn’t mind selling it before your sale (I would need it shipped to Hamburg, NY though)

    13. Joan

Oooooh…..I would love the china! But unfortunately I’m up here in Ontario! Maybe if they don’t sell, you could bring them to the Home Show when you come?

    14. Jen H

Im dying for the clock but I live out of state 🙁

    15. Pam

I live too far away to attend in person but would love to see the nest oil painting…big on bird nests here! I would pay for shipping. Love your book and website!!

And this is also a huge strategic weakness even for the land of Sun Tzu.
It has a high content of flavonoids which are a group of phytochemicals that have anti-oxidative and anti-carcinogenic properties.
This way you will never again be met with confusion and only be comforted with knowledge
      empowerment.

I have been following your blog for some time now and look foward to each post, love your milk paint and love your style. My question is have you always been so good at purging or is this something you have to work at. For example how do you let sentimental things go do you have a method etc. I know this sounds crazy but my parents both passed away over 10 years ago and I have so many things from their home that aren’t my style but I feel bad getting rid of things they loved so much. I think it’s great that you do get rid of things, I just wondered if you have some great way of letting things go:)

      Thanks for any advice!

MMS, I wish I could attend your yard sale but I live in Australia. You have so many nice items for sale, if I lived closer I would have to bring a truck! Goodluck with the sale

    20. Melissa @ DaisyMaeBelle

You have inspired me! I’m having my yard sale! I too have been just passing things on to thrift stores, but I have too much to haul at the moment because I have been giving every nook and cranny of our house a good purge! Feels good! I wish I could come to yours..but I’d probably fill my house up again! Ha! Life to the full! Melissa

Oh man….I’m from Canada and I just saw this posting now! I was actually in Gettysburg Saturday morning and would have LOVED to come to your sale! Sure wish I had checked your website last week when I was down there. My loss…..

    25. Tracey

Ah, the nest painting! I remember seeing in posts a couple of years ago. I loved that painting and really wished I could buy one like it. And I would have Saturday if I wasn’t stuck at a wedding in mid Ohio. To think, I live in Washington state and got almost all the way to you! I hope the nest found a good home.

    26. Linda Steelman Jarraf

Pure torture that I live so far away & can’t come to your sale. I am pouting. lolll
