Master Bathroom Progress

We’ve made some nice headway in our master bathroom over the past couple of weeks, so I thought I would show how it’s coming along..

The marble on the floor and in the shower is finished and I finally got to put on the new faucet handles.  They look so classic against the marble subway tile.  They were a bargain find on E-bay for $60.

A part of the tiling in the shower was making these niches for shampoo and soap.  I love how custom they look and the functionality they add.  No more wire shelf hanging from the shower head!

The vanity is in, but the sink isn’t hooked up, yet.  The dark wood and vintage details against all of the white looks exactly as I pictured it in my head.

I even kept the castors on the old dresser.  Little details like that make me happy.

AND we successfully installed the new toilet!  I’ve put one in before with someone who knew what they were doing, but we felt confident enough to try it on our own.  We read the directions and got it installed correctly on the first try.  No leaking!  DIY Victory!  I picked a toilet that had some details that would work well with everything else going on in the room.  Again, this room is small (no whirlpool tub, glass shower or double sinks), so I wanted to focus on making the space look bright, custom and luxurious.  A toilet with a bit more design detail adds to that overall feel.

There is still a lot to do and finish, but it’s getting there!

  1. Great job, Marian! We just finished ours last fall – lots of grey and white marble as well. You will never tire of it:)

  2. This looks amazing, so inspired to redo our small bathroom now, love that it is turning out just as you imagine in your head, love that!

  3. Oh, no! I made a joke when you said you were starting your bathroom renovation about BLOGGING my own bathroom renovation (which has been finished since early last Fall). I said it was my goal to get my blog posts done before YOU got your bathroom done!!
    AHHH! I better hurry up!!

  4. Love the classic & timeless look! Can you share the measurements of the dresser/vanity please? I have been looking for one to use in a bathroom myself, but everything I find isn’t deep enough for all of the sinks I find. Beautiful room!

  5. You are a miracle worker. I think your next endeavor should be a DIY B&B where you invite complete strangers (me! me!) to stay over for a weekend and we can work on projects the whole time. Your hubby can make us French Toast in the morning and bring us Diet Cokes during the day while we labor away making your visions reality and learning from you as we go. It is a win/win in my book. Let me know when you can make that happen! I am open in September…
On a more realistic note, I think you are amazing and I love your bathroom details… one question: did you seal the top of the dresser with a high moisture resistant sealer before adding the sink? Maybe a marine sealer of some sort? I would love to know, since it’s bound to get a lot of water on it. I adore everything you do and in a nutshell, you rock.
    Sincerely,

    1. I’ll be glad to join you at the DIY B&B. Good idea. Mayby some of Miss Mustard Seed’s talent will rub off on me!!

  6. Lovely! Very nice I love the white marble and the old dresser…. great contrast !

    Take care

    1. Love the way you did the tile in your bathroom – love the niches for the soap, shampoo, etc!

Also, the kitchen, it looks like my daughter’s, she has the same sink with the beautiful faucets – thought it was her picture at first.

  7. That tile in your shower is amazing! I love that you kept the casters on the dresser!

  8. No whirlpool, no glassed in shower, small space,a DIY so it takes longer and probably more concessions. But, besides a very lovely bath you have the real prize; contentment. Wow, now that is the real bargain. Congrats.

  9. Gorgeous and don’t you just go “ahhhh” when you walk in there in the morning and see it all shiny and new?
Just one little suggestion…toss out that bar of soap and switch to liquid body wash/soap. I heard somewhere that bar soap was the reason I was constantly scrubbing soap build-up (aka scum) left on the glass & marble tile in my bath. A never-ending battle! After finally getting the hubby to switch from his lifelong brand of bar soap (Not easy. Trust me), I now have much cleaner glass and tile. Evidently the ingredients that hold the soap together in a bar, are the same ingredients that bind the scum to the walls of the shower. Such a little thing made a huge difference. Whoda thought?!

  10. WOW!!! That is looking great! We are in military housing and are just WAITING until we can buy a home to customize it. I loooove that dresser/vanity! 🙂 I can’t wait to see the finished product!

  11. Oh how dreamy! I am getting inspiration from you, as usual, on what to do with my bathroom. We’ve had the vanity made from an old buffet since building our home 3 years ago. However, I haven’t gotten much further with any personal touches. Can’t wait to see your finished product! I concur with Gabrielle ~ you ROCK! Thanks!

  12. Looks beautiful! I love marble and all the details. I think small bathrooms are great. I never understood why anyone would want a bathroom that was bigger than most people’s bedrooms. Small spaces force creativity.

  13. It LOOKS great!! We recently redid our bathroom, we went with something similar on the floor but it was silver travertine. I love it…We left the tile alone in the tub area since it was in pretty good shape,.but looking at yours makes me want to do it. Your are an inspiration!

  14. A little heads-up about discount sink and shower fixtures: if you are purchasing something off-brand and possibly manufactured elsewhere, you may find that the inner workings such as stems, etc., are not a standard size. This will cause problems when you have to replace them from time to time. I recommend a trip to your local plumber’s resource store and grab a few extras before too long, just in case!

  15. Inspirational! Especially the wooden rollers on the vanity and the niches for soap and shampoo. Really special – Thanks!

  16. We have a small bathrm in our home & the one and only bathrm. We remodeled 2 yrs. ago. Can not wait to see your finished bathroom.
The company we purchased our tub , fancy toilet , and marbleen (sp) tub wall surround panels from had a floor model furniture vanity on clearance.

It was all wood, self closing drawers ,had some scratches and they touched up the scratches & cherry wood for $400. The co. that makes and sells them run from $1000.00 up for furniture vanities.

What a difference remodeling an out dated bathrm,. makes in a home,. I really am enjoying mine. Thanks for the pictures and keep them coming as you finish your bathrm.

  17. What a pretty view to stumble into every morning. I wonder if starting the day off with marble everywhere will make every day a good day. So happy for you. I know this was a long time coming.
    The Other Marian

  18. It looks so bright and fresh and pretty! I love those old castors too… and the handles are perfect!

    Cindy

  19. LOVE those tiled niches in shower…totally stealing this idea when I do my bathroom in a few months! Everything, as always, looks superb. 🙂

  20. It looks really great. One day I hope to re-do my bathroom but it needs a new tub so I’d like to just do a double shower instead – something I KNOW I’d have to hire out. Anyway – good going – love the tile!

  21. Dear MMS, Your bathroom is coming along beautifully. Love the shelves in the shower, the faucet handles, everything! Hugs, Anne Boykin

  22. This is fabulous! I know you are no stranger to DIY and you embrace imperfection but does the marble in the bathroom worry you at all? How do you plan to maintain it? I would love to know your thoughts!

    1. I have the same question. We are adding a master bath and I love the marble look but when I googled it I read that maintenance is an issue. I’m a LOW maintenance girl! 🙂

    2. I have marble in my 1/2 bath and it’s been fine. I’m wondering what all of the fuss is about! 🙂 I’m sure there are issues with it, but I haven’t had any issues. Is the maintenance concern staining? I just use steam to clean and disinfect the floors, so that’s gentle. I’ll look for a marble-safe cleaner for the shower, but will probably steam that as well.

  23. Is it possible to have bathroom envy? ( sounds odd, but true! )
The vanity pulls out the subtle brown tones in the veins of the tile floor….Love. Commode/a.k.a. toilet is a work of plumbing art. Niches, heaven. Me, wiping the drool once again….I think I’ve made myself clear. =0))

  24. Wow, I thought your subway tile and dresser/vanity were my favorites, but I’m really loving that toilet!

  25. Looks wonderful! Love your tile ,such a nice clean look. Great vanity. I would like a marble top. Not such a fan of the castors. Great job!

  26. Looking great! Love the dresser and I like the wheels too, Do you need to spray them so they won’t leave rust stains on the floor??? I loves the French kitchen yesterday.. Mine are painted a soft butter yellow. and I loved all of that color!!! Thanks , the wheels are turning!!!!!!

  27. Great Job. so CooL ! Could you post more detail or how to on converting dresser to vanity. Hints on how and what to do. Love the details needless to say envy, envy, envy
    thanks for sharing.

  28. I LOVE this bathroom. It’s exactly what I want. So thank you for posting these photos. I am so going to copy you. 🙂

  29. Looks awesome! You have a great eye for picking things out. Thanks so much for sharing and I love the inspiration!

  30. Looking good !!! love the little niches in the shower.
I want to change our bathroom, but don’t know where to start.
Thinking of a walk-in tub/shower as we use the shower and never use the bathtub. That may give us more space.
    Thanks for sharing.

  31. Beautiful. I love all your classic, elegant details. Perfection.

It may sound crazy, but I prefer smaller bathrooms. The big ones are way over-rated. I say that because I have an overly large one and I think it’s a complete waste of space. Although, since I don’t have a craft space, I actually use my bathroom to sew in! lol Yes, I set up my sewing table and sit in my bathroom and sew. When I’m finished, I fold it all up and pack it away in a closet. So, I guess it’s not such wasted space after all. Can’t you just see the real estate listing? Master bath/sewing room. Ha!

  32. Marian, I apologize if you mentioned this in a previous post … where did you get the shower tiles? I’m a fellow Pa. girl and I’d like to visit the store and copy the look. P.S. I’m excited to catch up with you again this year at Haven.

  33. Hi! I’ve been inspired by your vanity re-do while redoing my own master bathroom. Our bathroom is rather small and I have big storage concerns. Did you lose all of the drawers space for the plumbing in your vanity????

  34. This is visually like my own shower enclosure my family and
i purchased just lately, extremely pleased about it for anyone found on
the fence about purchasing one, do it now, you wont be sorry

  35. This is gorgeous and so rich looking! Can you explain how you did the niche? I’ve been puzzling over how you did the edges.
