Mustard Seed Yellow Kitchen & Updates

One of the amazing things about having a line of paint is seeing what people do with it.  Sometimes people send me pictures of their work and it just knocks my socks off.  When I received pictures of this kitchen by Atelier Du Vieux Pin (I can’t tell you how much I would butcher their name if I had to say it and not write it…) done in Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint…well, let’s just say that I was barefooted after looking through the pictures.

Pretty amazing, right?  I was blown away.  Not only is the space, custom cabinetry and flooring amazing, but the milk paint finish is perfection.   The Atelier Du Vieux Pin makes and designs French Canadian antique furniture reproductions and kitchen cabinets and they are true masters.

Anyway, I thought it was amazing and worth sharing.

Speaking of MMS Milk Paint, I do have some updates to share.  First of all, three of our new colors are available for our retailers to order, so they’ll be showing up in our retail locations very soon!  The first three that we’re releasing are Eulalie’s Sky

Dried Lavender

…and Artissimo, which I haven’t formally introduced, yet.  It actually looks a lot darker than this picture.  It’s a deep navy blue, but I need to paint another piece and take some more pictures that are truer to the color.

Also, we’ve started to carry larger sizes of the Antiquing Wax, Furniture Wax, Bonding Agent and Hemp Oil.  This is really nice for people who paint a lot of pieces (or something large like a floor or cabinetry.  Ask your local retailer to order any of these products for you or order them directly through the Homestead House website.

Lastly, we are still accepting new retailers for the paint line.  We’re looking specifically for retailers who love and use milk paint and want to teach workshops and those who can sell out of a shop they own or one where they have a strong presence.  If you’re interested, just fill out an application HERE.

  1. Bravo mes amis Canadiens! That yellow kitchen is stunning! I can see why you would be excited to see your paint in such an amazing kitchen.

  2. Wow…thank you for sharing and yes they are share worthy pictures. Just absolutely stunning!! I am loving that little stool. I’ve found that I am really loving vintage stools right now..always on the look for them.

  3. Exciting for us to see the kitchen. I can only imagine the feelings you get! That kitchen is GORGEOUS in your yellow! I got chills when I saw the sink area. Is that the true sign of a decorator, designer, artist, crafter, DIY’er? Things like those pictures make you so excited!
Congrats on the intro. of new colors, continueing success, and seeing your dream turn into a reality! The “Mustardizing of America” is depicted wonderfully in those kitchen pics–wouldn’t you agree?? (Mustard yellow and a whole kitchen!)

  4. I don’t think the word love is strong enough to express what I think about that kitchen! It is stunning!!!!

Does your milk paint work on laminate? or whatever that paper coating is on non-wood kitchen cabinets? I have been wanting to paint my cabinets but only the doors are real wood, the sides are particle board with some kind of veneer on them…

    1. I have the same cabinets. I wanted to try chalk paint on them but just can not afford it. I did end up painting them with Sherwin Williams primer and paint. They look great but not sure how long they’ll hold up. The strange thing is the paint is holding up BETTER on the fake part and scratching off just a bit on the doors. I’m curious about the milk paint too – I have LOTS of cabinets that need painting!

  5. Oh. my. goodness. That kitchen has left me speechless. Now I’m rethinking my plans to paint my cabinets white! Thanks for sharing these lovely pictures.

  6. With a kitchen that wonderful and colorful, I would love to see what they have done to the rest of the house.

  7. That kitchen is just gorgeous. I’ve thought about painting mine white, but that seems such a massive undertaking, I can’t imagine adding to that all the distressing and antique finishing. Wow, very impressive.

  8. Wow, just jaw-dropping . At first, I was more taken with the floor, I drool at random plank floors, and dream of having them someday. Then, I started seeing the rest, once the “glow” of floor envy subsided. A work of art. Talented cabinet makers they are indeed! The Milk Paint color is perfect for the space, even if I’m not a big fan of yellow kitchens! We had one growing up, and I’m still not over it at the age of creeping sixty!

  9. Oh, what a gorgeous kitchen! Love the colors! Could you answer a question for me, and sorry if it’s already been addressed~~I want to paint a floorcloth using a canvas dropcloth, would your milk paint be a good thing to use? Of course, I would seal it to protect it, but I just wonder if this process has been used before?

  10. Incroyable! (incredible) Just when I thought I loved white kitchens……I am just in love with
this one. I guess it all depends on the space. Also love the stool and dresser colors.

  11. I can tell the paint is wonderful but I can’t concentrate on that because of that trap door (?) in the floor! What is it for? Where does it go to? Why is it in the kitchen? I’m in southern California and we don’t have basements. Any ideas, anyone??

    1. I can’t say for sure, but these doors in the floor in old kitchens many times went down to the “fruit” or “cold” cellar where root vegetables and home canned goods were kept. It was usually just dug out of the dirt under the kitchen with shelves and bins. It naturally stayed cool in the summer and didn’t freeze anything in the winter. It was in the kitchen floor because that was where the products stored there would be used.

      1. I am surprised at the number of commenters who think the yellow kitchen is an update/remodel from an old kitchen. To me, it screams new construction. That trap door in the floor…my guess is that it is a commercial-type wine cooler. Marian, if someone guesses correctly, will he/she win that kitchen rebuilt in their home??? Congratulations on having your products showcased.

  12. GASP!!!!! what a kitchen…those cupboards need to be on a billboard and then you would have to open a plant to handle the orders and then entire towns could be re-employed and then it could save our good ‘ol american spirit! (well, you DID say to dream big 🙂
i adore miss eulalie’s name sake!

  13. Wow! That kitchen is amazing!
I never thought a yellow kitchen could look that good. 🙂

Well, I do use MMS Milk Paint… and I have an Etsy shop… and there is nobody in South Dakota who retails MMS Milk Paint (to my knowledge). I’ll have to think about this, but maybe you’ll be getting a brand new retailer in SD. 🙂

We just moved here a few months ago and I am still trying to establish contacts, but I already have some of my jewelry selling at the gift shop of the local Arts Center, I have met some people who are into healthy, chemical-free living, and my husband works for a non-profit that, among other things, provides art and craft instruction to people with disabilities. I just have to think about how MMS Milk Paint would tie into all of this. 🙂

  14. Holy beautiful kitchen! I’m barefoot now too. Your paint looks awesome on those cabs. Do you know if they waxed them? The finish seems a little shinier than wax, but maybe they buffed the daylights of it. And to think I was excited to show you my three cabinet lowers that I re-painted in Grain Sack. haha! (You nailed that color. Not too taupe/brown, not too blue. Perfect neutral gray.) Looking forward to Dried Lavender, although presently, I want to just paint everything Grain Sack. 😉 When I have a little physical shop, I will totally retail your paint & teach work shops!

  15. Wow oh wow! What a fabulous shade of yellow, and what they have done with it is absolutely amazing. And, man…. just look at that kitchen!!!

    Cindy

  16. Hello! I live in a southern suburb from Buffalo, NY. Do you know any retailers who do carry your milk paint (and teach classes as well)? I’d really like to have someone show me. (Zip: 14170). Thank you! I have a cherry dressing table and matching mirror in the basement that is just calling out to be the next MMS make over! 🙂

  17. That kitchen is absolutely amazing!!! I’m blown away. It also confirms my decision to paint my kitchen cabinets with MMS Milk Paint! Now just to decide if its going to be Linen or Grainsack. I’m also super excited for the new colors. I entered a contest to win hardwood floors, voting is going on now through FB, IF I win then painted cabinets are next. Please keep your fingers crossed for me!!! Of course I wouldn’t be offended if you’d like to give me a vote 😉 I have more great news… Since I had to cancel my Lucketts trip due to medical issues… I’m now finished with physical therapy and we’ve made arrangements to come see you in Alabama this Oct 19th, which is also my birthday. Gonna be the best gift to myself ever!! Have a great day Marian.

  18. Wow! This is EXACTLY what I plan to do to my own kitchen (new construction).! Very excited to see an actual kitchen complete with MMS yellow cabinetry and wood counter tops. I have looked high and low for inspirational pictures… Thanks!

  19. Thank you for sharing this! I’ve been thinking of using MMS milk paint on kitchen cabinets but wasn’t sure if it was a good, durable choice. Would you mind sharing extra tips for this kind of project?

  20. love MMS milk paint! was impressed to see the kitchen door, window, trim, etc was stained and not painted white, as is the norm lately. i have stained woodwork and hardwood floors and have thought about painting them but then i come to my senses and leave it alone. beautiful cabinets!

  21. Wow!! It is an amazing kitchen! It looks like such a wonderful place to work! A lot of talent displayed in this kitchen. The preservation of the floors is beautiful.

  22. Oh my gosh… that’s unreal!!! Not only the paint, but look at that FLOOR and the beadboard on the walls. WOW.. WOW

  23. I admire what I think was a sorta bold choice of paint for the kitchen, but it’s just perfect for the cabinet style and really plays beautifully off the stained wood trim & floor. I smell a designer at work! And what great exposure for your product. Gonna have to “git me sum.”

  24. Hi Marian love your blog just recently found out about the wonders of milk paint ,dying to try it will it be available in Ireland anytime soon love to hear from you thanks martina

  25. Kitchen WOW! My MMS stockist is already advertising your new colours and I have my order in for Dried Lavender. My new living room is already painted lavender and I’ll be using 3 of your paints for the furniture. J

  26. The mustard yellow is stunning in this kitchen. Could you please let us know their process for painting the cupboards? How did they prepare the cabinets, how many coats did they use, and what sort of protective coating did they use to make the cabinets durable? I have seen a couple of kitchens in real life that were painted in what I assume was milk or chalk paint, but without any obvious wax, since the surface remained chalky. The finish looked authentic in the antique houses, but was very chipped–nothing like this.

I’d love to see more posts about painting cabinets.

  27. Wow- such a gorgeous color and they have used it so tastefully with the lovely contrasting floor. I especially love they dared to use such a unique color in their kitchen- and did so verysuccessfully

    Best,
    Mimi

  28. When I saw the company name I wondered if I was lucky enough to find they were canadian, and not from NewOrleans.I recently purchased an older home that needs a new kitchen, and so often renovations tend to over-improve and take away what was so special in the first place. I absolutely love the job they did. Now can you direct me to a stockist in New Brunswick, Canada? Or a province close by, anywhere east of ontario would do.

    1. Susan, you can click on the link Marianne has at the start of this article. The link takes you to the company who designed the kitchen cabinets. They are located in Quebec and have a toll free number and email address in their Contact section of their website.

  29. Oh. My. Gasp! I LOVE that plank floor…! SO much, I could look past the awesome *yellow* for a moment…but ONLY a moment! It’s gorgeous, and so are your new colors! The entire MMS Milk Paint line is great, and I can’t wait to get into re-painting an old piece that’s just begging for new life w/this paint! I just can’t decide which color!

  30. Marian, I am in love with the kitchen, but am confused after visiting the linked website. Is The Atelier Du Vieux Pin company now carrying your line of milk paints? They are located in Canada and their website states they sell Homestead House milk paint line and it would appear that the yellow kitchen shown on their site is done with Homestead House milk paint. Is that your paint marketed under a different name there in Canada? Their list of colors differs from yours. Regardless, your MMS mustard would be similarly gorgeous. Like many have requested above, I would love to know if technique would be different on cabinets to get such a smooth, minimal chippy but lovely patina.

  31. Yay! thank you for this. We are looking at buying a unit with gorgeous dark wood bench tops and unfortunate mismatched teak cabinetry. I have been considering using your milk paint. I have two ideas. One is to get copper door knobs on them and leave as is and just go with a mixed wood/mixed metal look in the apartment, which has exposed brick. The other idea is to paint maybe gold over the teak and then use the primer for the milk paint and do white over the top and shabby it up. I really don’t want to have to sand the whole thing as there are just too many nooks and crannies throughout the wood surface.

  32. Hi, love your site. I am trying to find the herringbone backsplash that was posted on pintrest.. where is it from??? Im in the middle of my kitchen project and I cannot find a backsplash I love. please help, love yours. just need info.
    thanks,
    Mikah

  33. Hi Marian – my son is building my kitchen cabinets – unfinished – and I’m planning to paint the bottom ones in Grain Sack milk paint. Can I just paint 2 coats directly on the wood? My son uses an oil/wax product called Osmo (I think it’s called Top Oil) and thinks it will work as it penetrates the wood. Any suggestions? Cabinets are silver maple (plywood boxes). Thanks! Stephanie

  34. I would put oil after the paint cures! Unless you want a LOT of chippy! Stephanie Vorstermans.
