You girls are so amazing.  I have been laughing so hard at some of the suggested names for my cow.  You’ve also shared some wonderful stories and beautiful names of special women in your lives.  It’s been so fun for me to read.  Thanks to all who have participated.  The contest is open until midnight PST tonight, so keep them coming!  (Just scroll down…)

While I was enjoying the pool and playtime with my kids in Orlando a few weeks ago, I received an e-mail from a reader. She wanted to know if I was concerned about the oil based paint I just used on my kitchen cabinets yellowing. Well, I am now! Thanks a lot! I had just slaved over 52 cabinets and 16 drawers and the thought of leaving bright white cabinets and coming home two weeks later to cabinets the color of butter gave me a pit in my stomach. I started running Internet searches and found forums where people complained about Impervo oil based white paint yellowing after just a couple of weeks. I wanted to call our house sitter and ask him if my cabinets looked yellow, but I refrained.

When I came home, much to my relief, the cabinets were still bright white. A few weeks later and they are still bright white. The cabinets have held up to sticky toddler fingers, scrubbing, spills, bumps, slams and knocks.  Through all of that, the paint has not chipped or scratched off anywhere.  So, after a few weeks, I definitely give this paint a thumb’s up.  The yellowing others have experienced may happen in a few years or it may be affected by light and humidity, but I’m not worried about it at this point. (If you’ll get heartburn over it, Impervo comes in a water based paint that will not yellow.)

This quality Benjamin Moore paint can be purchased at your local True Value

The anonymous commenter who said I should name my cow “Miss Moo-stard Seed” make me laugh out loud.  So funny!

    5. Karen

Whew, I'm so glad they're still bright white. I can only imagine how you would have felt after painting 52 cabinets and all of those drawers if they had changed. Your kitchen looks gorgeous.

    6. lori

She definately looks like a Maxine.

    7. Cortney

The cabinets are beautiful, so glad they have not yellowed! I agree, Miss Moo-stard Seed is a fantastic name! 🙂

    8. Holly

She looks French to me so what do you think of Chantal? Or even Genevieve?

    9. lifespassion

Miss Moo-stard Seed? TFF! Even though I submitted a name, I think, I think, I think I'd have to pick that one!

    10. Farmer's Wyfe

Isn't it a shame when worries follow you on vacation? I bet the paint is better quality and won't be any problems, but if they ever do, I'm sure you can make it the new style and everybody will be painting their cabinets "buttery yellow"! 🙂

    11. The Painted Parlor

Dang, why didn't I think of miss moo-stard seed! That IS funny! I like a name that starts with an E, to click with your other cow, like Eloise or maybe Eva in memory my sweet grandma who passed away 6 years ago.

      Good luck choosing one!!

I think all oil based paint has a tendency to yellow over time but I would not worry about it. It's not going to be butter yellow. It will just make them look creamy. So it's a good thing you went with bright white.

My Mom is a huge fan of using oil based paint on kitchen cabinets and woodwork because it gives you such a nice shiny hard durable finish. She also says to always use white white because it will yellow over time. She painted all her woodwork and beadboard in her house with oil based white paint like 30 years ago and it all looks very nice and white. It might not be quite as bright white as it was when once painted…but you cannot tell…it looks very very good. It looks perfect actually after all these years. So stop worrying.

Low light will have the cabs turning offwhite over time. Most of my interior doors look like that left by the previous owners. It's so gradual, when and if yours do change, you'll never even notice it.

    15. SueAnn

I would have been sick to my stomach as well. Yellowing?? OMG!!!
Thanks for sharing that info…cause I am going to be painting my cupboards white as well. I will choose my paint carefully!!
      Hugs

I have used Benj. Moore paint for years and years and years and I LOVE it….it's the only paint I will ever use in my house! I've always used the oil based on my kitchen cabinets and it lasts longer than the time you'll decide on a new paint job. If you don't paint them for 20 years…and you hold up your pure white paint chip…they'll look a little creamy…but we all show a little wear after that long! Don't worry about them! I love my white kitchen! Latex just doesn't hold up like oil does on kitchen cupboards…especially with husbands and children!!

    17. Lori

Everything changes with time (and I do mean everything). Just enjoy them while they are brite and sparkling. By the time they start to show their age you will be wanting to change them again anyway, right?

      peace

    18. Life In My Nest

I absolutely love your kitchen cabinets and maybe by the time they change color, that will be the "in" color. One thing that I noticed in your kitchen — I have never known anyone who had space above their cabinets with nothing decorative up there! I like it, but has that always been your style?

    19. Anonymous

I am BEYOND thrilled that I made my decorating icon, the goddess of all things pretty, laugh. I don't have a blog, and I have had trouble commenting on your blog, so "anonymous" was the most efficient option. Only my husband and I know that I made you laugh, and it is OK!!!! What a wonderful, fun feeling I had when I read that my suggestion, Miss Moo-stard Seed, amused you. That is reward enough!

If it makes you feel any better, I had the bookshelves painted in our house twenty years ago with Benjamin Moore oil based paint, and they still look as good today as they did when they were first painted. You did the right thing, and I don't think it will yellow enough to bother you if it ever does. By that time, you might be ready to paint them blue! 😉

    21. anne.hunot

My name is Anne and I am writing to you from France.
About your cow, I am thinking of "Marguerite".
A lot of cows here in France have that name and I love it (I think in English, it is "Daisy"). It is
      so charming …
Your kitchen is great, I love the colour. You have made a wonderful work.
      Amitiés.
      Anne

My names are either "Maude" or "Gertrude" or "Gladys" … love them all.

And I love your kitchen, too!

    23. Just Spiff It

I painted our sons kitchen cabinets with Benjamin Moore Impervo in black. They were builders cabinets and now painted black they look awesome and masculine. I did this 3 years ago and to date they have not chipped.
BTW – the white kitchen looks incredible!!

    24. LisaMende

It has been my experience that even though over time the impervo does tend to yellow, it really isn't that noticeable except when you compare it to the original paint color. As for the name of the cow, I think "Nellie" is a good name, especially since the artist "nailed" the look you wanted! Love your blog! You are so creative and so inspiring.

      Grazielle-it's french for Grace

Loving your kitchen so nice and bright. When I put in wood-cabinets I thought I could always paint them white when I needed a change. I guess the problem with yellowing is why so many manufactures offer mushroom color for a lower cost than white in the solid wood cabinets.

    27. Carla63

I had been thinking Charolie , since your cow is a Swiss Charolais…but when I saw Miss Moo stard Seed…oh that's GREAT! 😉

    28. Tiffany @ Vista Trail

I think she looks like an Abigail…

My mother and I have been using BMSI for years now on woodwork/trim. Neither of us have used plain white but have chosen colors a bit softer. They have in fact yellowed with time, but it isn't so noticeable unless it's beside it's original color. Oh well, that's a vintage look to me! Perhaps your true white cabinets won't change at all!

I was thinking Miss Moo-lah would do the trick but I gotta give props to Miss Moo-stard Seed. That name rocks!

    31. suzieQ

I used to drive my poor daughter crazy when she would ask me to help her think of a name for a new doll, etc. My answer was always, Lou-Lou. However, I cast my vote for Miss Moostard Seed. It is too perfect.

    32. Leslie

I've used BM oil-based paints on cabinets, trim, baseboards, etc. for years (and I have the memory loss to prove it). The "yellowing" only shows up when you try to touch up after 20 years. The good news, the paint will actually hold up for 20 years

    33. p95 mask

Your kitchen looks gorgeous. What a unique handle. Best place to attach it in inner doors and wood doors also. Easy to catch. It is very popular in furniture market.

    34. Promosyon

Same dishes I bought from the bargaining market, before two days. It is plain white and some of the dishes are designed with cartoons.
