family room reveal

I was going to show how we installed the engineered floating hardwood floors today, but I did a little photo shoot with my family room and I decided I would share the pictures and some of my reasons for picking this floor.

This is how the room looked when we first moved in…

We ripped out the fireplace a little over a year ago and I’ve been waiting to rip out this carpet since the day we moved in.  After 6 1/2 years of living in this house, we finally ripped out the carpet and replaced it with 4 3/4″ wide Heritage Hickory (a floating engineered hardwood floor) by Virginia Mill Works.

The color on the walls is Glass Slipper by Benjamin Moore.  I love this color.  It’s a soft blue, but it’s still sort of neutral.

Having wood floors means that all of the furniture is on felt sliders.  Having all of the furniture on felt sliders means that I can move furniture around on my own at my every furniture-rearranging-whim.   It also means it’s easier to scoot the furniture away when I’m going to kick some tail playing Just Dance on the Kinnect.

I set up a desk in the corner for my computer.  (Surprisingly, that French chair is very comfortable.)

The wool rug I’m currently using in the room matches perfectly, but it’s too small.  I definitely need at least an 8 x 10 for the space, but we’re going to wait a while before getting one.

So, why did we pick these floors?  First of all, what are engineered hardwood floors?  They are not laminate, but a wood veneer over an MDF base.

Why did we choose engineer hardwood instead of solid hardwood?  Initially, I had my heart set on solid wood.  Actually, I had my heart set on reclaimed hardwood, but my husband talked me out of installing AND refinishing floors in the busiest part of our home.  My options were limited to pre-finished floors.  Going into the store we had a few picked out that we liked.  Once I got to the store, though, I wasn’t sure what I wanted.  We were willing to get solid hardwood floors, but Heritage Hickory caught my eye.   I literally saw the sample board and right away said, “This is it!  This is the one.”  I then inspected it and saw it was engineered and I was okay with that.  It was cheaper, easier to install and still comes with a 30 year warranty on the finish.

I like that this flooring is a rich, medium toned wood that’s not too red or orange.  It has beveled edges and a pretty grain.  It also has a bit of the hand-scraped look, but it’s not overdone.  It’s subtle.  The minor imperfections, dings, dents and saw marks are ultimately what captured my heart.  I also like that the finish isn’t shiny.  It just has a nice satin sheen to it.  My dad walked in just as we finished installing it and he said, “It looks very Civil War-ish.”  I think he meant it looks old.

The downsides?

  • Well, it’s definitely not as comfortable as carpet.  That’s an obvious one.
  • It’s a little slippery.  I almost went into the splits stepping out of our bedroom the morning after we installed it.  That was slightly painful since I was already waddling like I was pregnant from my sore muscles.  We’re all getting used to it.
  • It does show threads and crumbs and stuff like that.  I bought a white kitchen floor, though, so I’m obviously okay with cleaning floors frequently.  I figure the stuff is there, so I’d rather see it and clean it.
  • It’s cold.  Well, colder than carpet.  A bonus is that it prepares me to step onto the freezing tile in the kitchen!  It probably would’t be cold in most situations, but our basement workshop is underneath and it’s not insulated well.  It’ll probably be a bonus in the summer, but I find I’m using a blanket more than usual this time of year.
The boys have enjoyed running around on it and it’s perfect for building Legos and Lincoln Log houses.  All in all, we love it.  I can’t give testimony for how well it wears, since it’s only been installed for two days, but I’ll let you know in a year or two…

Love the room! The rug is beautiful. Why not layer it on something neutral and keep it? It’s so perfect in your family room.

    2. jaclyn

hi, i love the curtain print. what fabric is it?

    3. Linda@Coastal Charm

I have this type of flooring (they are 2 years old) and we are still lovin them.

      Blessings,
      Linda

    4. elma

Wow the whole room is amazing!!! Still need a dairy sign:)

    5. Sharon Cowell

We put engineered wood in our home. Its been almost 2 years now and we love it. It has not scratched at all (and I move the furniture around frequently). Also, our refrigerator/freezer had a large leak and pool of water on the floor did not damage the floor at all. If we had real wood the floors would have had to be replaced completely. Ours is a cork core (highly sustainable product) so its eco-friendly which is an added bonus for me. Highly recommend!

    6. Audrey

Wow! What a huge difference that has made! It’s absolutely beautiful, y’all did a great job. I can’t wait to get hardwoods. Sigh

    7. Stephanie Hobson

Hardwood floors are like having a giant piece of wood furniture… shows dust like nobody’s business. You just have to learn to stay on top of it. Your room looks beautiful.

    8. Christy

I just want to come lounge, is that ok? Every surface of your family room looks so comfy and inviting!

    9. Brenda van riper

These floor are very pretty I had nasty carpet in my house when I moved in I lived with it for 18 months and thought about getting hardwood floors went and looked at some found some I liked came home to look under the carpet to see if I needed a sub floor I have a older house, and behold I had original hardwood under the carpet! I was so excited my ex husband came down pulled up all the carpet, sanded the living room and hallway floors, varnished them and put a top coat on them I couldn’t be happier I love them 80 yea rold original hardwood. yes it is colder and not as comfortable as carpet and dig hair shows up everywhere! but.. they are beautiful!

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Yay! That same thing happened with our house. Beautiful hardwood floors under stained, musty carpet.

    10. Lorretta from NH

You can say what ya want but I am in love with that rug. The colors are perfect…for my living room. If I lived near by I’d come over and take it off ya hands in a heart beat, size be darned. No, seriously the room looks great. It so compliments your life, furniture and style to a tee.

    11. Darcy

OK…I’ll bite and ask the question: where did you get the rug? Because I love the pattern and colors. Plus, since I have small boys & a chocolate Lab – it won’t show dirt as quickly.

      • Heidi

Just to try and save Marian some time I’ll tell you it’s from Target. (at least I’m pretty positive). I have the same one but in fall colors (browns, oranges, yellows). I’ve seen it at the store but I bought mine on line when it was one sale with free shipping!! 🙂

        • Darcy

Thank you Heidi! I looked on Target’s site, but didn’t see it. Perhaps I didn’t use the right search perimeters though. I’ll try again tomorrow. Thank you again.

            • Darcy

              Marian, Sharon & Heidi,

Thank you all so much for helping me with this! I really appreciate it. Unfortunately anything with a cream or white background is out due to a toddler, a baby & the aforementioned Chocolate Lab – I know I couldn’t possibly keep it nice looking. That said, I’ve got some ideas now and am looking around. Thank you again!

P.S. Marian – I am loving your book. I was a gifted to me on my birthday by a dear friend. I try to fit in a few minutes after the babies are asleep & I collapse, to read it before bed. I’m savoring it it and learning so much.

    12. Heidi Ferguson

Looks beautiful! We have engineered wood floors in my kitchen, I didn’t choose them though. I like them but YES they are very slippery! My kids have slipped many times on them. Also I wish ours had a bit more character because you can’t even see the planks definition hardly–it could be plywood for all you know. It’s nice to see that someone with such amazing taste would get an engineered hardwood because it makes me feel like yeah, it’s OK if not everything is 100% “authentic.”

    13. Jeanette

Love the floors we are doing the whole house in wood this year. Our old house the living room was over the crawl space and we put insulation in the rafters and it helped.

    14. Erin

Beautiful job on the entire room! Can you share where you got the area rug? We are wrapping up a similar project and I need rugs!

    15. Anneke at This, That and Life

The floors are a great choice and the entire room looks just beautiful! We have a full supply of felt sliders ourselves! 😉

    16. Lauren

      Beautiful!!

    17. teresa

I remember the first time we had wood floors in our home….lots of sliding around. But I still loved them.

Your home is perfect! I’m not jealous …. I’m inspired =)
      Happy Day

    18. Merle Turner

We ripped up our carpet many years ago, it is cooler but living in Australia that an advantage, easier to keep clean and pet smells don’t linger around. When they were stained they were polished in matt not so slippery.
      Merle……

    19. Lesley

Gorgeous! I especially love the daybed near your desk. I really want a small one for my living room.

    20. sherry hicks

congrats on your beautiful new floor we chose Engineered over real wood cause here in Texas the contractor said real wood swells with humidity and it is not used often my color is very close to the color you chose we did it five years ago and I would never ever ever go back to carpet and it seems so much more sanitary than carpet. Enjoy your flooring it is lovely!!
      Sherry

    21. Emma Kate at Painted Style

We’ve just done ours too and believe me, our carpet was far worse than yours! It was the original bad 60’s carpet!
I recently bought a little wooden thingymabob like you have and I had no idea what to do with it. It’s in the garage waiting for inspiration. And now I know! It’s a rustic remote control holder! Love it! x

    22. Kristine

Ahhh, just lovely. I adore the colour scheme and the floors look fab.
The rug is so perfectly suited. You could make it work by layering it over a larger natural jute or sisal base rug.

      • Miss Mustard Seed

        Yes, that’s a great idea!

    23. Debbie~refreshrestyle

Your floor is beautiful! Love everything about it 🙂
      Debbie

    24. Susan Bailey

I think that the floors look great. I have all hard wood floors in my house except one room that we put down ourselves. But we had someone else refinish them. I would now like to have that one room with carpet replaced andI don’t want to go through the mess of refinishing hardwood. I like what you picked out and I think it would blend really well with what I already have. I will have to check it out.

Also, loved your book. I let my daughter read it and she has not returned it yet!!!!!

    25. Michele in IL.

wow, this is just gorgeous! So many great details, textures and the blue!!! Love the plates around the tV!

    26. Karen Holder

The room is Beautiful!!!!! I want one of these in my house..LOL I cant get over how bright it is…Mine is so dark…Love all the colors..How do you keep all that white clean?

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Well, you have to keep in mind that I can make the room look brighter than it is with the developing and the way I expose the picture. It’s a nice room with good light, but it’s not quite a light-filled as it looks in the photos. It’s north-facing, so it doesn’t get a lot of direct sun.

The sofa and wing chairs are slipcovers, so I wash them when they get grungy (and they do!) I have a little 6-year-old footprint on one arm right now.

    27. Sarah

What a beautiful home. Anyone can buy new and have decorator perfect decor. It takes a master to make a silk purse out of a sows ear. I call it serendipitous decor….having the eye and patience to use what you find. So much fun and no one has a room quite like yours. Thanks for the eye candy and example for working hard toward a goal. Smiles today, Sarah

      • Miss Mustard Seed

I agree. Six years in the making and I’m still not done. What’s cool is that a lot of things in this room were free or very cheap. I have a few splurges, but this was definitely put together on a realistic budget.

    28. Dawn

I absolutely love the warmth of the room. One of my favorites is how you incorportated “tool” box with all the remotesand game gear! Love your site! Thanks for sharing!

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Ha, yes! We have a number of remotes, so the old caddy is a perfect way to keep them controlled, but still accessible.

    29. Lorene Halfmann

Absolutely beautiful! I really enjoyed seeing a full room shot as well! I love seeing pictures of all the bits and pieces, but seeing it all come together is awesome. I “study” each picture to learn more 🙂 Is there a story behind the little dresses beside the window that I missed? Thanks for inspiring me each day!

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Good eye. Yes, one is from my husband’s great-grandparent’s attic. It is the most amazing lacework I’ve ever seen. The other one was discovered in my friend’s barn. I actually talk about it in the book.

        • Lorene Halfmann

Thanks so much! Yes, now I do actually remember that story in the book. BTY, the book is wonderful. I was thrilled to get my copy and have really enjoyed reading it.

    30. vintageshabbychicks

OMGoodness Marian…I love your new makeover!! I especially like how you incorporated painted furniture with natural wood furniture…simply gorgeous:)

    31. Jacqueline

The family room looks fabulous! I only wish ours was attached to the kitchen like yours. We just finished installing reclaimed barn wood for our floors that we got for free. Best thing ever since we finally removed the hideous green carpet.

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Oh, I bet that is gorgeous!! And for FREE!!! Good for you. 🙂

    32. Sherilan

Love the room! We are thinking about tearing out our fireplace also. I have a question about that. What did you do to the outside wall where the fireplace was? Ours is brick from the patio up to the chimney. Thanks

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Ours was a gas fireplace, so it just left a small hole. We weatherproofed it and still need to patch the siding.

    33. Beverly Dyer

Congrats on the beautiful floors. The room is beautiful, inviting and warm. I lover the colors. I just purchased that green bird pilllow for an area of my home office. I love all your french chairs. Did you re-uphosletered all your pieces your self? The lattice curtains are to die for. I have been looking for some ready made panels for my breakfast nook area and have not been sucessful. I am in love.
      Beverly

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Yes, I reupholstered/slipcovered all of the furniture in this room by myself. I still have one chair left to do (the twin to the French chair in the floral fabric) and I plan to do a video tutorial on that.

    34. Beverly Dyer

Curious, you have little ones, how do you keep your light furniture clean. I want so badly to have my furniture in my formal living area this color or slightly darker but I am afraid becuase I have a small dog, a cat, a 23yrd old and a Hubby. The room is absolutely beautiful. I am in love

      • Miss Mustard Seed

The sofa and wing chairs are slipcovered, so I can remove and wash them. I will admit, though, that it’s a pain. I love the look, so I deal with it.

    35. Pam

It’s so nice to get something you’ve been working for, congratulations! Hard floor surfaces are the best. When I saw what actually accumulates everyday on my cement floors (talk about cold 😉 ) my carpeting upstairs totally starts creeping me out. Get one of those big industrial dusting mops you’ll be so happy they work wonderfully.

    36. Tonya

It looks amazing, Marian! Not only do I love the floors, but you have inspired me (once again!). I have a similar shaped family room and keep trying to figure out how to configure furniture, as our crate and barrel sectional is in desperate need of replacing after 12+ years of “love”! 🙂

    37. Becky

WOW! STUNNING! just my style, comfortable and livable. I must have been living under a rock! I had no idea that the kitchen was open to the family room. LOL! Great house great blog.

    38. Jennifer Longenecker

I’m so glad you are happy with your new floors. They look great!

    39. shawna johnson

Beautiful! Just one question, we are in the finishing stages of building and I need to pick out floors.(3,000 sqft. of wood flooring) We are on the fence whether to use milled hardwood and have it sanded/ finished on site OR an engineered floor/prefinished. I’m worried with 3 little ones and 2 large dogs a stained hardwood floor wouldn’t look so good after a few years. I was told the engineered/ prefinished flooring has a more durable top coat. Any advice considering you live with both? Thanks so much!! Have a wonderful day!

      • Miss Mustard Seed

I have heard good and bad about both. Engineered hardwood is supposed to be better for areas with moisture issues, like a kitchen. The finish on these has a 30 year warranty, so I felt pretty comfortable.

My only concern with having floors finished onsite is will they be covered under a comparable warranty?

    40. Kat

Love the chair fabric on photo #9. It would make great curtains in my house.

We tore out the avocado green carpet in our large living room and there was another layer of thin brown carpet underneath it. Then the padding underneath that was almost dust – we had to use brooms and shovels to get rid of it. The process was so gross, I never want carpeting ever again. I’d rather sweep and mop and get the floor really clean, than vacuum and have it only “look” clean.

    41. Brenda

I agree with Kat. All that durt and hair end up going through the carpet, with a wood floor you can see and feel whats on it. If you have allergys carpet is hard on them! In your book, you mentioned putting fabric on the walls with liquid starch. Can you tell us exactly how to do this?

    42. brittanyMakes

I love it! I absolutely love it!

    43. Terry

I love your new floors. We put in solid walnut hardwoods and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Up in our master I chose hand scraped elm. Looks a lot like oak. By the way, my daughter received the Pay it Forward sign from Lucketts that I won for her and she loves it. It will be perfect for her first home while she is finding herself in life and the saying, “If We did all the things we were capable of doing we would literally astonish ourselves.” I think it’s inspirational for her. Thank you so much. And thank Lucketts.

    44. Krista

I love this room – perfect balance of blues and whites. Would you be willing to share the name of the fabric on the pillows on the two French armchairs? It appears to be a white paisley on a pale blue ground. Many thanks in advance!

    45. Cindy

Marian, your room is so beautiful! I LOVE the floors, and all the charming chairs and colors you have in the room, everything looks amazing together. Thanks for explaining your reasoning for choosing this style floor, that helps me understand the pros and cons!

      Cindy

    46. Jill Flory

Your floor is gorgeous Marian! We have hardwood or tile everywhere now but 2 bedrooms. I will never install carpet again! Tearing out our carpet and seeing all the grime and grunge that had been ground through was gross. Some of the carpet pad was completely disintegrated from all the sand and dirt that was ground into the carpet. Yes, the dirt might show up more on hardwood – but you can clean it ALL up! One room of our house we did put reclaimed hardwood. The rest is solid hardwood. My parents have some engineered flooring. Hands down my fav is the reclaimed with the solid hardwood right on it’s heels. I do think though, that what you got sounds and looks much better than what my parents put in a couple bedrooms. I’d love to use what you have in my bedroom when we redo it!

    47. Ashley

      Nice floors!

I agree with you – I’d rather see my dirt (so I can clean it) than obliviously live in it (with carpet).

    48. Trac

      Marian,
The floors, and the whole room look fabulous! You have done a great job of making your house a home. I have one question about your slipcovers. I love the look of them, and I know that they are washable, but I have white hand towels in my 1/2 bath, and I have 3 kids. After some time, even with bleach, I can’t get them bright white anymore. They just seem dingy and grayish. With body oils-esp. in summer, that is my fear with the slip covers. Have you noticed that with yours at all? Do they come clean even when they look dingy and gray? Thanks!

    49. Pendra

Your home is so beautiful and such an inspiration. Your floors are amazing!! I just adore all your slipcovers and homemade curtains (especially cuz you just cut instead of hemmed) and all the little details that make a house a home…you didn’t miss a thing! We just bought a house and after closing we walked in for the first time and saw it empty and realized all the first floor carpet had to go (they had an estate sale and had covered all the spots very well), but it was an unexpected expense all at once so we had to do, what we had to do and went with a medium grade carpet…but some day!!! A girl’s gotta dream!
      Hugs,
      Pendra

    50. JESSICA SHELTROWN

Just wait till your boys figure out that socks + wood floors = sliding at high speeds on feet and knees:) If they haven’t already.
We installed laminate several years ago in livingroom/diningroom and while I love the look it is definitely louder and colder than carpet. Hoping to install some carpet tiles for a floor rug on the livingroom side soon.
Personally I hate how often my floors need mopping but I love not having to freak out over stuff getting spilled on them. It is easier to wipe up milk on a wood floor than on carpet:)

    51. Mitzi

I love that you put a before picture. It shows what you truly have done on a small budget! I have a coffee table similar to yours but in a lighter finish. I would love to have it darker like yours. Any suggestions to get it that way? Thanks!

    52. Denise T

The flooring is gorgeous! Love this texture, finish, etc.. Glad you are enjoying it .

    53. Sherry

I love the paint color on your walls! I’ve had the BM Glass Slipper paint chip in my file for years. I will be using it now! Thanks. Your floors look great, and you are so right on the “downsides”! Love your room.

    54. Jan

Marion, it is absolutely wonderful. There is something about wood that is warm even it is cold. Snuggling with blankets is an added bonus. AND I agree about seeing the gunk, junk and grime on the floor. At least it can bee seen to be cleaned. It made me realize how much dirt and nastiness was under my feet on the carpet.

    55. Dawn

Really loving your new flooring. It looks so good with all of your furnishings. Your mix of contemporary fabrics and colors with the vintage/country style furnishings is just beautiful. Well done. Have you considered maybe layering your current rug on top of a larger natural fiber rug? I’m on a mission to do that in our family room. I currently have the jute rug and am on the hunt for the perfect pattern to layer on top. Just thought I’d share.

    56. Julia

I love the lightness and airy feel when looking at the pictures of your home. Beautiful and thanks for sharing.

    57. Denise McCurry

Where did you get the small wreaths on the hutch? Floors look great, very authentic!

    58. colleen

sooo looks good but would it work in a bathroom? we still have gross carpet upstairs .

    59. Yvonne @ StoneGable

Beautiful!!! I also loved the old floors too… but these are such a gorgeous neutral wood! so happy for you!

    60. Melissa

Looks so great! As much as l love the feel of carpet underfoot, hardwood floors and area rugs are the way to go, especially with pets. We have three cats, three dogs and three guinea pigs, and it the only thing that can hold up to their hair, accidents and whatever other animal fluids appear. When we got rid of our carpets, we were amazed by how much cleaner the house smelled. But the floors show every little dust bunny since they have no where to hide. I swear I can create an entire small mammal with the amount of pet hair I collect! Anyway, looks great!

    61. sharon mccullough

EVERYTHING is so pretty. Job well done. I would just like to say that i like the pop of color in the little paisley like print chair and I like the cabinet in the one corner. I am always on the prowl for one like that. Just want you to know I enjoy seeing what you have accomplished and to Thank-You for all the inspiration you and your family are to other. Sharon in North Carolina

    62. Susan

Beautiful room and the darker floors really set everything else off so well. Love the little floral chair and “mismatched” but perfectly paired graphic ottoman. 😉

    63. Beth Morrow

It is beautiful! We replaced our carpet with hardwood and my only regret was that I didn’t do it sooner! I’m not as brave as you and I’m older too so I had someone else install the floor but I think I could do it…maybe my next house!
Love the pics of your lovely home!

    64. Carolyn

Looks really beautiful! you must be very pleased, and proud for having done it yourselves.
I have very similar floors going on 2 years now and absolutely love them. It’s not as cold here during he winter so coolness isn’t that much of an issue. But, I can tell you it did warm up quite a bit when we got our larger area rug…cuts down on noise too. Enjoy!

    65. Sarah @ Cozy.Cottage.Cute.

Wow! Now that is a space I could curl up with a good book. It looks soooo cozy and comfy.

The floors blend in perfectly with the rest of your décor. Really lovely choice!

    66. Petria OReilly

I could move right into that beautiful room and feel right at home! Lovely, warm, inviting, relaxing, interesting…I could go on but I won’t. Just want to say that I had real wood floors in my last home…the finish was shiney….and I always wished that I had the engineered wood floors instead. I think that you made a wise decision.

    67. JessicaD

Please come help me finish feathering my house/nest. IN SW Grandiose Green and Nankeen and vintage Harvest gold. Thank you in advance.

    68. Janet Lawson

Your floor is beautiful..It makes the room look so much bigger..
      Have a wonderful night..

    69. Danielle

It looks so lovely and all your beautiful furniture and decorating stands out on the warm hued floors.

    70. Nancy

      As usual, perfect!

    71. SemperNova

Love your floor…make me want to rip my carpet up right now!!

    72. virginia weathersby

Love the floor! I suggest you get a pair of yoga socks they will keep your feet warm and prevent you from busting your bum!

    73. Corinna

White, brown, blue, and green is my favorite decorating color combination. I love it!

    74. ArtSnark

looks fantastic! your changes really opened up the space & love that paint color

    75. Donna

Love the floors and your style! Love, love, love the chair next to the sofa with the blue pillow. I have my Granny’s sofa in the same shape with wood edges. What paint combination did you use on the wood trim to get that look? Please share!

    76. shirley@housepitalitydesigns

Love the floor, really the whole room! We are building house with a very large great room, and I have 1 traditional navy background. 5×8 rug. Any suggestions for adding more rugs to the space? I’m not to good at mixing unless I see it somewhere. ( that’s why I really love your posts!)

Coincidentally, we used the same flooring, in two bedrooms, & office. It has proven to be fabulous and quite easy to take care of. I use a dustmop, spray some endust to attract the dust bunnies and viola, easy peasy! You are so inspirational and love your decorating & projects.

Love, love, love…..I could move right in!!! All my favorite colors!! I must ask, where are your drapes from?

Best thing you can invest in when having hardwood floors is SLIPPERS!! 🙂

Beautiful! I love your dad’s remarks. 🙂 I agree. It looks rich and sturdy and like home. Wonderful! ~k.

It’s funny reading about the reasons you chose this flooring. Sounds just like the reasons I gave! It was love at first sight for me, also. Our first room done was the music room (I give piano lessons) and wow! It is loud! Even with the new rug. Guess I will just have to get used to it! I know you are a busy mom, but here is the link to my blog if you want to see our room.

I just read your part 2 of laying your floors. I must say that I am super impressed! I think I perhaps would like to try and lay floors, however, I am not sure my marriage would surrive ;-). I love your family room make over. It is so fresh and inviting! I love the color scheme you use too of the french blue and white with pops of green. Thanks for the wonderful tutorial as well as the inspiration!

What a lovely transformation! Just beautiful! Thanks for sharing this just as you do all of your other lovely projects and transformations. I look forward to ending each of my evenings with a visit to your blog. I like to end the day with a dose of “pretty”!

Everything is gorgeous! I love your style. I want the material that you used to cover the chair that’s sitting next to the blue and brown dresser. It has a footstool with blue and white material in front of it. I would love to cover an old chair of mine with the same material. Would love to know the manufacturer and pattern name. I just watched your milk paint tutorials and can’t wait to try it on an old dresser.

Bravo, Marian! The entire first floor looks sooo beautiful . . . absolutely put together and very “you”!! May you have many happy times in your lovely space with family and friends.
*A few words about hardwood floors : 1) buy cozy slippers for all; 2) purchase two (2) Swiffers, one for each child ~ set the timer for 5 minutes and see who can cover the most floor space OR collect the most dust. Amazing what fun they think this is, and it’s easier than vacuuming!

      Hi Marian,
Absolutely LOVE the new floor and your overall aesthetic in the living room….Bravo!!! Had an idea for you since my aunt faced the same problem with her wool carpet area rug when she moved…. the flooring/carpet experts matched up a solid to her wool rug to create an approximate 8″ border of sorts; they bound the outer edges of the solid color rug and cut a rectangular area in the center of the solid to lay down her wool rug and voila….larger area rug to accommodate her new space! I think your area rug would be perfect in that same scenario…..maybe the apple green color for a border or the light wedgewood blue center of the flower? Whatever you decide, I’m sure it will look fabulous as always!
      All the Best,
      Gloria 🙂

Marion – I love your wool rug. It would go perfectly in my tiny house. Who’s it made by and did you get in fairly recently? Thanks!

I love it all! It’s so beautiful and I love how there’s this perfect flow from one side to the other….Perfection! One of these days I’ll makeover my space and will use you for inspiration!
I love how you have tons of raw furniture…Where’s the cut off? how do you stop yourself from painting everything? I have a tendency to just paint away…Thank you so much…being here is like therapy 🙂

A fascinating discussion is definitely worth comment. There’s no doubt that that you need to publish more about this subject, it may not be a taboo matter but typically people do not speak about such subjects. To the next! Best wishes!!

What is the color of the stain on the floors?

    94. Jessica

Hi! We are considering purchasing and installing this same floor, but it is such a big decision trying to decide on which one we like best. I was wondering, now that you have had this floor for almost a year, how is it holding up? Does it seem durable so far? Any drawbacks? My husband is hesitant to go with engineered clic, but I think it is a good option considering it’s price point and ease of installation. Any feedback would be much appreciated!!! Thank you so much for your inspiring blog posts!

      Hi,
Your house looks beautiful! Your choice of floors even helped my boyfriend and I decide on the Heritage Hickory for our own place. I was curious, however, how your floors were holding up. We have a contractor scheduled to come in a week from now and have been reading a few negative reviews on the durability on Virginia Mills products. I would really appreciate hearing your experience with it. Thank you!

Hi Marian, I don’t know if you will see this but I would love to know how the floor is holding up. That is an engineered floor that I have looked at in the past – even have samples of it. We didn’t wait until we were ready to install hardwood at our house – we pulled up our carpet and painted the subfloor with porch paint but hardwoods are in our future. I’ve considered getting unfinished pine from Lumber Liquidators and giving it a distressed stained finish but it would be challenging to manage while living here. That’s the appeal of prefinished flooring. It would be great to get your perspective on that floor after having it this length of time. It looks beautiful here. Thanks!

Hi Marian! So, it’s been ‘a year or two’.. how’s the floor holding up? I was looking at that particular floor on the Lumber Liquidators website, is that where you purchased it? I’m wondering if it’s a good place to buy from.. Thanks!
