Desk & Ottoman Transformations

I’m always ramping up for something, aren’t I?  What was a “down” retail time for me last year is craziness this year.  Every February, The Old Lucketts Store holds their biggest sale of the year…The Ground Hog Day Sale.  Brilliant, isn’t it?  So, instead of taking a little time out, R and R, and work a little on my own home, I finished four pieces of furniture in the last two days.  Whew!
This desk and slipcovered ottoman are the latest projects.  I just dropped them off this evening in the room I share with Karen
This desk was black, beatup and missing a drawer.
The ottoman was…well…ugly.

I stripped the paint off the desk top to reveal a beautiful wood grain.  It was then finished with dark walnut stain and a coat of paste wax for protection and luster.  My husband made a new drawer and I added vintage style glass knobs

The base was painted in…you guessed it…Creamy by Sherwin Williams.  ProClassic is my favorite.  I didn’t want to distress this piece, since it was black underneath, so I hit the edges lightly with a dry brush and antiquing glaze.  It gives the illusion that the edges were sanded to expose natural wood.

A light dry brushing over the entire piece brings out the imperfections and celebrates them.

I covered the ottoman in drop cloths with the same gathering technique I used on my French chair.  I won’t be repeating the double-ruffle with canvas any time soon.  I broke four needles on this skirt!  I love the sort of slouchy, yet chic look I achieved, though.

I bought the lantern at 85% off due to three missing panes of glass.  Sometimes compromising on a piece isn’t compromising at all.  You hardly notice they are missing.

The skirt on the ottoman is a little wonky, but I think it sort of fits with the slouchy/chic look.  Let’s hope someone else thinks so and buys it at the sale this weekend!
Make sure to come back tomorrow night to share your “Copy Me” challege projects.  The post goes up at 10:00 pm EST.

  3. Oh boy, I too learned my lesson with sewing thick layers of drop cloth fabric. I only broke one needle, but I managed to break it into 4 pieces and had to borrow hubby's magnetic thingamig to fish the pieces out of my machine. I did learn that with a drop cloth you have to use a heavy duty denim needle, and if it seems to be struggling, change the needle to a sharp new one. It seems to dull the needles faster than denim. You might already know that, but if not, maybe it will help next time!

  4. I think it is great when you are able to bring out the imperfections of a piece and "celebrate them" – I love the texture of both pieces together; I'm sure they'll sell quickly!

  5. LOVELY….you're so talented, I would love to team up with you!!, it would be so fun!!….I too love collecting junk and turning it into fabulous updated items ^_^ right now I'm renovating my home, as I go to my local thrift stores I have to pinch myself to keep from buying big items…I must wait until my new home is redone so I can turn to furniture *_^

  6. HI!
    I just discovered your blog. It's fabulous…
I love what you did for this desk and ottoman. It's always wonderful to see something restored and made useful again.
I'll be back for more visits ~ thank you for the inspirations!

  7. Wish I lived near your shop! The desk and ottoman pair are just what I need. I don't see any reason why they wouldn't sell right away! You are so talented!

  8. Another lovely chic-cycle Marian.

My drop clothes are bleached, the paint and sprayer are ready and if I bring one more "to do" piece into our garage I may lose my happy home. I told hubs "its not my fault, Donna and Marian won't stop posting inspiration!" what's a re-haber to do?

  9. Absolutely love the transformation of the desk. If I lived near by I'd be at the sale and buy all 3 from you. Gorgeous!
Girl – my heads spinning with so many ideas I've gotten in the short time I have gotten acquainted with your blog.

  10. Morning Marian,
Headed out the door to check out the Ground Hog Day sale. I will be leaving a little gift at the front desk for you..just a small "happy to know a fellow blogger" gift.

Be well and have a great weekend.

  11. If I could be there, I'd RUN for the cute little desk! I'm afraid to admit that I may have passed this one up at first sight (unfinished). You have a great eye. Oh, and I happen to love the wonkiness of the ottoman….my middle name is Wonky!

  12. Although I'm not a ruffly curly cue kind of person, I gasped when I saw this! 🙂 I love the unexpected added details to BOTH pieces. They'll sell so fast you'll wish you had made 3 of each.

  13. Really nice job, love the table. And thanks for the antiquing tip a
    (on the table). So easy.
And I don't blame you a bit on the tarps, I was a painting contractor and those buggers are heavy! Pull those around all day! Great exercise.

  14. Fabulous ! I love love love that desk, you completely brought it back to life, well done as always my friend. Bravo!!! I'm sure it will be snatched up in mere minutes!

  15. Morning! I love all of your projects!! I have a small desk that you have me thinking about AND I must find an ottoman to cover! I was thinking of you last week when we were trying to get home in the awful storm; I ended up sitting at the intersection in Luckets where the antique shops are! I sat there staring at the building for 2 hours and was wishing it was open so I could check out your projects first hand!!lol I can't wait to get back there! Sincerely, Jeannette

  16. can I ask a question? I am wanting to paint a piece of cherry finished furniture but I want it to be a darker color brown. Do you have any paint/glaze suggestions? It's a shelving unit piece with cabinet on the bottom and shelves on the top that my husband picked up at a sale, not solid wood.
    thanks.

  17. I picked up a similar sized table a thrift store last month, and I've been trying to decide what color to paint it, black or white. After seeing yours, I'm going with white. Thanks!

  18. I would soooooooo buy that fabulous ottoman with all it's ruffles! The whole grouping is amazing! You are super talented to take those pieces and make them look like a million dollars!

    Cindy

  19. I'm seriously amazed by every post you make. You are by far my favorite blog to read everyday. Your work inspires me and I learn so so much from everything you post! Love it! Be blessed!

  20. What? Almost 50 comments? Now that you are famous from Blissdom, am I going to have to wade through over 50 comments every day? Well, I bought a drop cloth per your advice. It has plastic on the back. 2000 miles west, six days later, I bought another drop cloth, bigger, no plastic. I washed it, but it never got lighter. Should I just quit now? I must have missed something. I have upholstered several chairs in upholstery class, but this DIY stuff has me stumped. Maybe I would be better arranging cogs and nuts. Ann

  21. Nice work on the desk and the ottoman. I WANT THAT LANTERN!!! I am just SICK that I am nowhere near you to shop that sale! good luck!!
