card room green living room | the “dresser corner”

Yesterday, I finally finished putting the living room back together after painting the room Card Room Green in November.  As I started arranging the plates and antlers on the wall over the dresser in the corner, I wondered why it took us so long!  Did I really procrastinate that much?  Then, I remembered we put the Christmas tree in that corner and made the decision to not hang things on the wall until we took the tree down.  And then I involuntarily started playing virus Bingo.  If I get Flu B or RSV, I’ll complete a row on my card.  Anyway, it felt good to get something done and bring the newly painted room to life a bit more.

Here is how that corner looked before the room was painted…

And here is how it looks against the Card Room Green

For me, this is a case where both wall colors look good.  I liked the original wall color, but both the ceiling and walls needed a refresh and I decided to take this room darker and give it a bit more character.  I really like both versions of this corner, though.

I tried to replicate the arrangement, but I realized I accidentally changed it slightly and scooted everything into the corner a bit more.  My initial reaction is that I liked it better pulled out from the corner a bit more, so I might move it all if it bothers me enough.  I’ve learned that it’s best to live with decisions for a little while before changing something based on a knee-jerk reaction.

The light in this room is lovely in person, but it is hard to photograph.  I’ll have to try shooting it at different times of the day, but this is how it looks in the morning light.  (The windows are north and west facing for those who are interested in that sort of information.)

I know antlers aren’t for everyone, but I love the balance of the delicacy of the plates and the masculinity of the antique European antlers.  With the cuckoo clock mixed in, it all feels very Bavarian to me, which is a look I love.  If you’ve ever stayed in a family-run Gasthaus in the Bavarian Alps, then you get what I’m talking about.  The alabaster lamps add a bit of elegance and tie the wall arrangement to the dresser.

I stacked an antique watercolor box on top of an antique birdseye writing slope.  Artist and writing boxes have become one of my favorite things to collect in the last two or three years.  I have a few I use for art and writing supplies and then a few that are just decorative.  I’ll share more about some of my writing slipes since I haven’t written a post about them specifically.

You can read about my key tassels HERE.  I bought the one on the dresser but I made the one on the writing slope.

The animals were impossible during this photo shoot!  They were running in and out of the shot like they wanted to be a part of what I was doing.  They wouldn’t take directions to get in a cute pose, though, so I gave up and had to shoo them out of the way.

Violet was the only one who found an aesthetically pleasing pose and I happened to snap a shot just as some morning light was hitting the lens.  She looks like a little cat angel.

I wish I could tick this room off the list as completely done, but I still need to put one more coat of paint on the new fireplace mantel and then, when we’re ready, we’ll replace the windows.  It’s come a long way, though!

  1. Both wall colors are good but in my opinion the green is really rich and I do love it with the blue and white. I wonder if it would be worth all the work to move the dresser. Lol You may not notice after a while. Great job!

    1. That is exactly what I thought. I might not mind it too much once I get used to it. If it keeps bothering me, I’ll move it.

  2. I am glad you are feeling better! I love the new paint color as well but have to admit, I’m on team “scootch it to the right a little more.” Those plates against the green along with the chest of drawers are just lovely.

  3. Love the cozy warm colors you are choosing in this house. The rich tones and masculine touches are perfect and bring vintage charm to your home. Of all of your houses (which I loved them all) this one speaks the most to me. ♥

  4. The chest just comes to life against this new wall color. The entire vignette is perfection due to your use of the juxtaposition of elements.
    Swoon worthy Marian.

  5. First of all, I’m one of those that wants to know which direction the light comes through the window 🙂 so thanks for mentioning. The thought crossed my mind just before I read the next couple of lines. I agree both paint colors are nice but I prefer the green. And that wood against the green is just beautiful, even the calico against the green is beautiful 🙂 I hate to say this because I know how much work it is to get the plates and antlers hung just right……but I liked the previous location better. I’m not seeing the whole wall and maybe that would make a difference but from what I see everything needs to scoot right. Violet looks beautiful in the first picture and in the second picture she looks like she’s waiting for the cuckoo bird to fly out of the clock. I do love what you’ve done to this room.

  6. The green is beautiful against the blue and white plates. I have a collection of plates I’d like to display but I want to make sure I do it safely. How do you hang your plates?

  7. I love this warm green color for this room. The dresser is great. I have a dresser in the corner of my living room too! For a while I felt “guilty” about it, like it really should belong in a bedroom or something. But it’s so handy where it is now! And seeing how beautiful and appropriate looking yours is, gives me permission not to worry about the Furniture Police! Enjoy all that fresh painted loveliness and your cute animals!

  8. Your animals are the perfect little helpers – adorable!
    Love the chest and boxes!!!

  9. Soooo Marion….and soooo inviting and tastefully done. Love your “style”! I, too have some antlers and plates on a wall that I love very much. Not everyone gets it and that’s ok with me. Makes my heart sing!!!

  10. I think it looks beautiful. If the location of the dresser bothers you too much, you may want to try something on the right side of it such as a tall plant, a coat rack, a vase or an umbrella stand, etc. Then you won’t have to move anything and the location may look more intentional to you. A lot of times when I try to redo something, I can’t get it right again, so I would hate to have to move all the things on the wall.

  11. Beautiful. I thank you for going ahead and using antlers. It provides rich examples of texture and contrast we can’t find just anywhere now days. There is only one problem with the green color. Now that I see how lovely it is with the plates and antlers, I am thoroughly convinced my living room needs a paint refresh. Hahaha. I was going to paint my kitchen cabinets but think the walls may go first. Lovely. Truly lovely.

  12. Love the green, it makes the whole room look more cozy. I do believe that that dresser corner is going to continue to bother you. (it would me) The space between the corner and the doorway is fairly narrow, and with the balanced arrangement on the dresser and wall, that space needs to be more balanced. The way it is now, makes the dresser look jammed up with the clock. I know that rehanging it all will be a pain, sorry.

  13. Beautiful, I just love your style Marion! Could you please share again the cotton crocheted dish cloth you posted before. I couldn’t find it anywhere on your site and I started the project before a house move…..you know what that’s like. Please send me the directions, I’d really appreciate it!

  14. Your homes just speak to me. I’ve never seen anything I wouldn’t LOVE in my ow home!

  15. Do you still have the light switch on that wall? It might be easier to use that light switch with your arrangement and dresser more in the corner the way it is now… ? Love your decorating!

  16. I like the ivory or white walls but the green has a nice moody feeling. When I saw the photo with the green walls I immediately thought the dresser looks cramped in the corner and wondered if it could be moved. I definitely would move it back to its original location. Just my opinion. I love the antlers with the transferware.

  17. I’m shocked that Sebastian, Esme and Violet were uncooperative!! The shot with Violet is priceless. I really liked the lighter wall color, but I also see how beautifully inviting the Card Room Green is. I have been hoping you would circle us back to the family room. Next to your dining room, it’s my favorite room in your home. I so appreciate your loyalty to staying true to your style.

  18. Love the rich lusciousness of the wall color against that incredibly gorgeous antique chest of drawers.

And as much as I even hate to type this, I am of the team scooch back to how you had it bore. Ugh.
I think it will continue to bug you. Ya just know when it’s right and it was spot on perfect before. Pls forgive me for giving my two cents on it.

  19. So beautiful! I love all the components, colors and textures! I wonder how it would look if you switched the oval platter with the top center round plate?

  20. I love the English Mounts and have looked only to find them in some kind of resin. Share source please
