First of all, thank you so very much for all of the amazing ideas for color names. I was blown away with the creativity, thoughtfulness and just how many of you pay attention to the things that are important to me. It was touching. I wish I could express it in a more articulate way, but the words are getting muddled. So, anyway, thank you.
The color name I decided on was…
Apron Strings
…in honor of Diane’s grandmother’s “company apron.” There were so many names I loved, but this one fit so well with the rest of the names in my line and those two words immediately evoke a feeling or memory. Neither of my grandma’s had aprons this color or even wore aprons, but I can imagine a grandmother mixing some biscuit dough or crimping a pie crust with beautiful coral apron strings hanging down the back of her skirt. It says, “vintage”, “homey”, “feminine”…all things that fit this color perfectly.
I have my other new colors named for now, but if I need help naming a color again (and maybe even if I don’t), I know who to ask for help.
The three newest colors (Apron Strings, Trophy and Curio) should be available in October. Fingers crossed!
Now, to the “What is it?” contest. The very first person to guess, Tammy (Tammyt145), was right! It’s a fog horn.
The reed needs to be replaced, so it doesn’t make the sound, but it’s otherwise in great shape. It would be awesome to hear how it sounds with the reed in. Maybe I’ll look into that some day. Thanks for playing along with the guessing game.

Fun name!! Thought you might want to know that your title says “Apron Stings” instead of stRings. I love aprons & use them often!, so this color’s name definitely evokes a lot of memories for me. 😉
And what is “diane’s grandmother’s “company apron?” I tried finding a reference for it in an earlier post but couldn’t fine one. Was just a little confused.
Thanks!! Love all you do……

Feminine name indeed! It fits perfect. I need to find an online source for your milk paint so I can order it try it out. I love the chippy look it gives furniture.
Wishing you well!

I dunno if my comment went into spam as it had a link to an auction house but one sold for over $2000! Quite cool for something no one wanted!
Love that name!
That’s a great choice! My grandmother always wore a apron. When I was about 20ish, I made her, her “company apron”. Definitely brings back sweet memories for me 🙂
I’d love to see Apron Strings and Tricycle in the same photo so we can compare them to each other. I think it would be neat to paint something in Tricycle with an Apron Strings wash… that might be an awesome effect. 🙂
I love the new color name! My mother, grandmother, and aunt always wore aprons when they cooked. My mother had several neatly folded in a drawer just like the dishtowels, cloths. They weren’t the bib-type aprons, they had a sash that tied around the waist.
Blessings!
I love the name “Apron Strings.” It does evoke the sweetest of memories for me too. I still have the homemade vintage aprons of my Grandmother and Aunt. This reminds me too get them out of storage and use them. <3 In fact, if I remember correctly, one in particular has patterns with this wonderful color.
Great choice Marian!
A foghorn without a reed would be a good thing in my house with young children. 🙂
I love the name of the paint…great choice.
Marian,
You responded once before with suggestions on how to create a hammered worn (means with some black) copper look I still desire for either an occasional table, perhaps nite tables vs. nite stands since I want them tall for the higher mattress. Now I see your Apron Strings (red) color milk paint and with my copper idea, think this color would be great. Is there a a color I call rust that might compliment the copper in your line? I’m so frustrated in finding the pieces and the look I desire – please open a retail space. If one exist, where is it? I’m in the Bethesda, Md area.
oh yes!!!! LOVE that name “apron strings”…….. I might have to buy some paint in that color because I LOVE that name……..honestly, it is wonderful !!!!!!!!!!!! and yes, I will have to buy some paint!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love “apron strings”, I’m thinking you must use “Fog Horn” as a name someday…
Love, love love the name Apron Strings for your new paint color!
These names of colors are so unusual and romantic, that they are able to inspire. I like to fancy too and to give different unique names to objects. By the way, I like the bedside table on the picture because I adore all the objects of vintage style.
I named it Grandma’s Apron so I was close. My mom and grandma always wore aprons to cook and bake and I remember the feeling of seeing them in the kitchen with their pretty aprons on getting ready to create wonderful treats for the family. Love the color and look forward to trying these paints as I’ve never used them before. Thanks for the fun contest. 🙂
I love the name for the wonderful color! I just can’t wait to get some!!
Love the name! Actually, Grandma’s Apron was my first thought – Apron Strings is much better. I still have, and use, my Grandma’s aprons; they bring back wonderful memories.
The name fits the color just perfectly … love the color and looking forward to using it if I can find it near me.
Thanks for this color.

People people….how can you cook without an apron!!!! An apron helps you to think….keeps you clean, allows you to have a dishtowel wrapt around the ties to wipe your hands as you cook….Can’t imagine even setting foot in the ktichen without an apron on!
APRON STRINGS!!! What a GREAT name! I LOVE it!
Hi Marion, me husband plays the bagpipes and the chanter has a reed in it, so perhaps a shop that sells bagpipes would have a reed you could use to hear the fog horn. We live in Cape Town and often I lie in bed at night and listen to the fog horn from the lighthouse. It would be really cool if you could get it to work, I wonder how far the sound would travel. I really enjoy your blog and am about to buy milk paint for some furniture, am looking forward to the waxes. We only have Annie Sloan paint here in SA, I have been reading your tutorials and really enjoy them so hopefully my first project will be great.
I love the name! It gives great imagery…I can see my grandmother in the kitchen with her “apron strings” the perfect peachy, pink/coral! I can’t wait to see new colors in your line and hear their names.
Oh, Apron Strings is perfect! Great choice! I can just picture one of my favorite Anthropologie aprons with coral apron strings that has all the sensibility of vintage- grandma-femininity. Congrats to Diane!
When I first started reading this post, I thought you were naming one of your paint colors “FOG HORN”…keep in in mind…
Can’t wait to try one of your paints on a very old cabinet I have. I think you just came up the a wonderful name for a new color and didn’t even know it……”Fingers Crossed”. I think that would be a great name!
