I picked up a charming antique pine cabinet at the Lucketts Spring Market and, because the house was in upheaval from the kitchen renovation still, it went straight into the garage. It occurred to me today that I haven’t properly shared where it ended up here on the blog, so that’s what I’m doing today.
I was looking for a wardrobe or cabinet that could replace some of the storage we were losing during the renovation and there were a lot of antique pine pieces that caught my eye at the market. I would ooooo over them and decide to walk away and think about each piece. I’ve learned that walking away helps me make better buying choices, especially when it comes to larger pieces. I am eager and ready to fall in love with pretty much all beautiful antique pieces, but that doesn’t mean the piece is going to be right for my space. Walking away helps me shake off the heart eyes and see the piece with a bit more clarity.
As with several other antique pine cabinets, I loved this piece when I first spotted it. The size and configuration of it was perfect for the foyer and it was about half the cost of the other cabinets I was considering. As the cherry on top, it came with a working key, which is always a perk in my eyes.

I still walked away and thought about it for a few minutes before going back and pulling the tag to make the purchase. A part of my consideration is I had to make sure it would fit in my rental van! I had already purchased a hutch for the kitchen as well as the antique baker’s table for the kitchen island, so I was a little nervous about this large piece fitting in as well, but I played a little van-organizing game in my mind and I was pretty confident it would all work.
And the piece looks lovely in the foyer. It’s just perfect!

I also replaced the fixture in the hall with a vintage chandelier I’ve had since our PA house and added some silk shades I found at an antique store for a bargain! I think they were $3.00/each or something like that.
I haven’t fully organized the pine cabinet or figured out how to best utilize it, but I have some overflow storage of shipping supplies for paintings and things I need to photograph for clients in the top and we keep shoes in the bottom. Anytime anyone leaves shoes hanging around the house, I’ll collect them and put them in there. There is a shelf, so it works perfectly. It’s resulted in a lot of Mom-where-are-my-shoes calls, but they are learning that the default answer is to look in the cabinet in the foyer.

Remember how this space looked at all, you may notice I installed a chair rail and picture frame molding (tutorial for that HERE) and painted it all in Farrow & Ball’s Light Blue. (As a reminder, HERE is what the foyer looked like.) I told you I’ve been working on other things in the house! I still need to put a second coat on the closet doors (louvers are the worst) and hit a few spots with some touch-up paint, but it’s almost there. I’ll be hanging a gallery wall of black and white family photos in the hall soon, which will add a lot.

I’m also planning on slip-covering the seat cushions in the French barrel-back chairs, which has been on my list forever! I have a bunch of sewing projects to work on, so I’ll put those in the lineup when I have the machines out and I’m making a mess of threads.

- It’s just hard to beat antique pine pieces like this. They are classic and always stunners.

As I was photographing the foyer, I thought how nice it is to start to share some other corners of the house! You’ve been seeing so much of the kitchen over the past few months that you may have forgotten what the rest of the house looks like. I hope you’re enjoying this little reminder…

Oh that piece is a BEAUTY!! You’ve come such a long way!
You’ve done a fantastic job ! Don’t laugh but I can’t wait to see how you decorate for Christmas. I love your style.
Me too, Betsy!
Beautiful!
Your animal paintings are wonderful, your missing poor Sebastian though!
I hope you will show us a tutorial on making the slipcovers!
Did something happen to Sebastian ?
I think she just meant that she was missing an oil painting of Sebastian. I sure hope so!
I thought the same thing. Sebastian was looking at the dog picture saying, “that’s not me!”
It’s a dream come true! Such a nice fit and all of the charm and elegance an old piece brings to a space. Hope it serves your family well for years to come. The light fixture looks just right beside it. Lovely.
Just love the furry photo bombs, made my day!

The pine cabinet is fabulous and looks great in the foyer. Did you stain it or oil it to change the color a bit? Or is it just the lighting? Anyway I love it, and love that you proudly display paintings of your fur babies.
I was wondering about the same thing as to the ‘finish’ on the pine cabinet. I’m sure Marian will tell us…
Absolutely stunning!!! I love it so much. And the cat and dog portraits are perfect there! Well done as always Marian!
This piece fits perfect! I met you several years ago at the Luckett’s Market with my niece. You were selling and your booth was wonderful. I hope To revisit.

I can’t wait to see that cabinet that we can see in the dining room. I believe you bought it recently too. It looked beautiful in the photos you’ve shown previously.
I think it’s lovely! One question—where do you shop for your beautiful frames for your paintings?
The pine cabinet is wonderful-I also absolutely love the mini chandelier. I don’t remember seeing that one in your last house…
I didn’t hang it in our last house! I was going to hang it above the tub, but it was against code, so it stayed in bubble wrap the entire time.
Do you have a picture of your foyer coming in from the front door. Curious on how that would look in my house.
It’s beautiful. I love, love, love how the animal potraits look hanging there.
Hi Sebastian!! Love the armoire. . . Just beautiful but the
Paintings on the side of the cat and dog are the stunners!
Much Love Marian💚
Very pretty setting and inviting furniture arrangement !
Very Very Nice ! And very pretty & inviting setting in your entrance hall.
The pine piece is a beauty! Is it two pieces?
Better, in my opinion, are the two Chandler s. I want one so badly!!!
Any hints on where to pur base or what price I should expect to pay for a small one? Love your family one you just hung.
I can’t recall if you showed us the complete floor plan. I have lost my orientation of how the house is laid out. I would love to see the floor plan. Love the pine armoire. People must be really shocked when they come INSIDE your mid-century house !!! Fabulous job!
You have an amazing eye and talent for transforming spaces!
Part of what makes that particular pine cabinet so lovely is that it is lighter in color and not that usual orangey type of old pine. Just a perfect catch-all to keep stuff hidden! It looks like it fits there with plenty of space to get around, so you must have wide hallways!
