And the house we bought is…

That little guessing game we played yesterday was so fun!  And, what I enjoyed most about it, was hearing your thought process in the comments about why you thought I picked certain houses.  So many of you understood the tension I felt in deciding between some good options and hoping to pick the best.  Ultimately, we picked the home that was best for our life, which is how a home should be selected.  Not for pictures or decor, but for the life you want to live there.  And the decor will come.

The house we bought is house number two, which so many of you guessed right.  It’s the brick rambler built in 1970. Even though we had a few historic homes as viable options, let me tell you why we selected the one we did.

As we were casually looking at houses when Jeff was going through the interview and candidating process at the church, I started flagging homes I would want to look at.  I looked at everything from total gut jobs to newer homes with traditional floorplans. Of course, I was most excited about the ones that were built in the 1800s.  I flagged a limestone farmhouse, a stunner with a staircase and trim for days, a historic home in a small downtown area with Rufus Porter-style murals and everything.  But, as we looked into the details of each one (and did a few drive-by reconnaissance missions), we crossed them off our list.

One had been turned into two apartments and the interior staircase had been completely removed.  More than one was located on a busy road with construction sites or gas stations right across the street.  (Noise and resale value were mostly the concern with those.)  One was huge but didn’t have central air and, even though it made my heart race, I couldn’t imagine my boys enjoying that house.  One had rooms so small that I was pretty sure we wouldn’t be able to fit our bed in the bedroom.  And several were a half hour or more away from the church and school.

The commuting issue wouldn’t be a big deal if Jeff worked a 9-5 job or even one that he drove to, worked, and then drove home.  We have both done commutes that were over an hour when we lived and worked in the DC area and you just get used to it.  But most pastors don’t work set hours.  The needs of the congregation as well as events on the church calendar often dictate the hours worked and when they are worked.  If our house was closer to the church, it would allow Jeff to come home between his work day and an evening meeting to spend some time with us without being on the road for two or more hours each day.  It’s also easier to have families over.  Hey, we’re just 15 minutes down the road, come on by to have dessert with us!

The other issue with a 30-minute commute to the boys’ school is that Calvin, as a Type 1 Diabetic, sometimes needs us to pick him up for additional medical support or it can be a pretty big deal if he leaves a bit of kit or even his lunch at home.  We need to be close enough to his school that we can get there in a reasonable amount of time when needed.  For these reasons, we limited our search to about a 15-minute radius of the church and school.

When I first spotted this 1970s brick rancher and showed the listing to Jeff, he initially didn’t see the potential I did.  I could see that this was a great house and it just needed some TLC.  I walked him through the images online and told him my ideas.  We talked to his sister, who flips houses in the Raleigh area, and she said, “Oh, brick ramblers are the best.  That is a winner for sure.”  So, we reached out to the realtor about seeing this house and a few others.

Unfortunately, the 1970’s rancher received an offer that day and I didn’t want to get into a bidding war that early in our house hunting process.  We would just let it go and keep looking.  But, a couple of weeks later, the house resurfaced at a reduced price, so I asked if we could take a look at it.  The house is U-shaped and all brick, sitting at a Y between two neighborhood roads.  The yard is lined with large, old maple trees that provide shade and privacy and are just beautiful.  Inside, you can tell the home was once inhabited by someone who really loved it.  Intentional decorating decisions were made in every room from the wallpaper and coordinated painted trim to the light fixtures.  The decorating choices were dated, but good design can still be recognized even if it’s not the latest and greatest.  Everything was quality.

The backyard is pretty awesome.  I’ve never had such a nice outdoor space.  Of course, you have to imagine what it will look like with some sprucing up!  Right now, it’s a large concrete hole.  (I get so nervous walking around it!  I’m momming everyone, telling them to watch their step so they don’t fall in the hole!  We don’t need another broken bone in the family.)  But, next spring, it will be ready for swimming, floating, pool parties, and dipping our toes into.  Gardening in the heat of summer will be a bit more enjoyable if I know I can run and jump in a refreshing pool.  It’ll also be great fun for the boys and an excuse to invite friends over.

(See the sweet autumn clematis peeking over the fence?  That is one of my favorite vines!)

The home had been vacant for several months and, prior to that, we learned, was inhabited by a widow whose expressed wish was to live out the rest of her life in that house.  So, even if she was once hanging all of the wallpaper and trimming all of the hedges, time certainly takes some of that energy and ability away and a once pristine house gets a little tired.  I admire her family for carrying out her wishes and supporting her.  I’m sure they did a lot for the house like cutting the lawn, cleaning leaves out of the gutters, and fixing odds and ends.

We are excited about being a part of the next chapter of this home and I can’t wait to share some of my ideas for the house with you.  Naturally, I’ve already been making sketches and lists and we have a couple of projects lined up to start on right away.

I’ll share more about our first day in the house, the house itself, upcoming projects, and more, but I wanted to end this post with the best note you can receive from the seller of a home.  The note was full of little tips and tricks about the house, but it finished with a line that filled my heart…

“Thanks for buying my mom’s dream house.”

It was like one final confirmation that this house, while unexpected, was the right choice.

If you know me at all, you know if anyone appreciates a note like this, it’s me.

This is so exciting! I cannot WAIT to see all you do with this house and that note is precious. You were the perfect buyer for this lovely home.

    2. Kim

Wow, at the outset, that house doesn’t seem anything like you! So this will be a fun transformation to watch! The outside might have some traditional aspects, but going on the limited photos so far, the inside seems more mid-century modern to me. The backstory of the house’s previous owner is precious for sure.

So, when do you move in?

    3. Colleen

We once lived in a ranch style home and they live large! I think the reason is that there is no square footage dedicated to stairs. Much happiness in your new home!

    4. Carol Jansson

Ooooooo, kidney shaped pool, my favorite. And autumn blooming clematis on the fence! Lovely!

      • Carol Parks

HOORAY! Thank you God. It will be soooo lovely when you all are finished.

    5. Alice Hanson

The note just sealed the deal it was the right house! Congratulations and I will be watching ?.
      Smiles, alice

    6. Beverlee

Well, that note made me cry. I am so excited and feel as if this will be wonderful for your family. Prayers for quick and blessed days in this home

      • Elena M.

I don’t know why, but it made me cry, too. I can almost imagine the widow being my own mom.

Marian, congrats on your new home, I’m sure it will be magazine worthy in no time. I guessed correctly on your choices yesterday, only because I imagined you both giving your two children a pool to enjoy in this part of their life, they deserve some fun, because moving for children is sometimes hard (I know personally it was for me). Here in Miami, a pool can be used basically year-round and it does make the summer almost bearable. Enjoy and happy decorating, I can’t wait to see new pics!!

        • Tracy

Can’t wait to see you do your magic. It will be exciting to hear about your plans. On a side note for some reason empty built in pools just give me the creeps.? My son currently has one at the house they just bought.?

    7. Leslie

Oh my goodness! I cannot wait to see how you blend your unique style with a 70’s rancher. It will be so exciting to see the transformation.

    8. Winkoo

I love this story. House hunting is such a trial but so fun. I can’t wait to follow your new adventures.

      • Patricia

We have a 1980s brick rambler, so I’ll be really really interested in what you do ! I love the way you give tribute to the previous owner- you are always so kind when talking about the new things you bring to a house . And now onward to the next adventure. Marion, sometimes I think you move just to enrich all of us !

    9. judy

Oh i am so happy you chose this house. It reminds me of the house i grew up in pool and all. That is what i did all summer as a kid swim and ride bike. My mother was quite the decorator with the wallpaper matching carpets and curtains. must have been the thing

    10. Suz

Congratulations on your new home! It looks like a lovely, welcoming house with lots of potential and a great heritage. It will be great fun to watch you put your own vision into it in its next chapter!

    11. judy

Oh I am so happy you chose this house. I grew up in a house like this with a pool and all. My mother also decorated where the curtains ,carpets, wallpaper everything matched. Can not wait to see what you do to it. Good luck with your new home.

    12. Betsy

When my husband and I downsized we moved into a small 988 sq ft. home. It’s a ranch style, something I swore I would never have. It’s worked out perfectly. I’m still trying to come up with design ideas so that fact that you choose #2 has me excited to see what you choose design wise.

    13. Anita

What a smart choice for your whole family! Can’t wait to see where you will begin. The line from the seller’s note is heartwarming for sure. It nearly brought tears to my eyes. Such a nice beginning for the new chapter of your lives.

    14. Marie

The photo with the drapery, wallpaper, and wood floor reminds me of the ending of Driving Miss Daisy, where the once lovely and homey home stands empty and ready for the changing of the generations.

    15. Danièle Monette

Man, that note made me cry!

      • donna williams

So happy for your family. I knew you were picking this one and I agree with your choice. You will make it perfect. My mom has a brick ranch and it works perfectly for her. She orig didnt want 70 style but the location was perfect. She added character with molding andbeautiful landscaping. Your kids will love the pool. We added a pool 22 yrs ago and its great for entertaining. You should check out my IG acct to see my outdoor pics of my pool. Its an outdoor oasis. Lots of roses, arbours and plenty of potted plants. I will be following your journey with much excitement!!!!

      • Irene Kelly

Congratulations ! One of the very first projects you need to do is get water in that pool before it pops out of the ground. We have had a Sylvan inground pool for over 50 yrs. And we get it painted new coping etc & maintained every few yrs. At least get a pool company to come out and look at it and find out how long it has been empty. And all our friends have inground pools so speaking from a lot of experience. Cannot wait to see whst room you will start on. My guess is the kitchen.Much Luck with all your orojects !

    16. Nicole

I was pulling (pooling?) for a house with a pool for your kids. Love this house. Such good bones. I consider this a ranch style which if the floor plan is laid out correctly you can have bedrooms in one part of the house …private and then living area seems even more celebrated! Looks like it’s going to be a great house to make into your home.

    17. Vickie White

This house just feels right for you. And I can’t wait to see how you make it uniquely and classically yours. Last one in the pool is a rotten egg. May you all be blessed in your new home….

    18. Trish Woods

Neat!! This will be a wonderful home for your family!! I guessed right!! Blessings.

    19. Leslie

Congratulations! Can’t wait to see it all you do unfold.

    20. Debbie

I picked the wrong house yesterday…but I am glad you are able to see the potential in this home. It will be fun to see if you use any of your former home’s ideas in this home? Congratulations!

    21. Sara

It’s perfect! Welcome to your new home.

    22. Linda

I thought this was the one – location aside, it sounded like a great family house – just right for this stage in your lives. Plus, I can see the potential and can only imagine what you have already swimming around in your head.
It’s great to walk into a home that already reflects your design sensibilities, but it’s really more of a challenging and creative exercise to completely reimagine a home and make it exactly what you want. I cannot wait to see this process unfold!

    23. amy Mogish

cannot wait to see all your dreams and projects! Congrats!

    24. Kristi

Absolutely love a u shaped house. I’m from Texas so I’m partial to brick ramblers. It’s going to be amazing. Excited to follow along with your design.

    25. Christy Keyton

So excited to see what you do. We just finished renovating my husband’s childhood home- a 1957 brick ranch last year. We love how it turned out. Happy decorating days ahead for you! And what a fabulous outdoor space!

    26. Linda Kuehling

Congratulations ! It’s going to be great ! Can’t wait to follow the artistry that will come .
      Ranchers are the best .

    27. Emily

Omigosh that note is so sweet! ?

    28. Laura

Congratulations!! It’s a lovely house and I can’t wait to see you add your touches! Welcome to Maryland from the Eastern Shore!

    29. Nora

      Welcome Home!!!!
This will be fun to watch you work your magic. It’s going to be fantastic.
The very best of luck to you. May you make many happy memories here!!

    30. Theresa

      Awww! The note❤️❤️
      Congratulations Marian!
Can’t wait to see the magic happen as you put your touches on each room and space. So happy for you and your family. Many blessings!

    31. Laurie

Some of your recent shares have included some “modernish” styling. I’m not surprised you chose the rambler. I know you will make is special for your family. ?

    32. Cheri

I would have chosen this home in a heartbeat! I’ve always wanted a rambler — but you know Rochester — the home of the split levels! Looking forward to watching you make this home your own!

    33. Becky

This is absolutely a fabulous choice! With your touches it will feel like you in no time, at all!

    34. Tracey

Our home is so similar to this! Almost an identical dining room and living room! We bought a 1967 rambler in NC in Oct 2020 and I don’t think one space has been untouched – we’ve worked hard to preserve much of the original character. Just less paneling and shag. ? Can’t wait to see what you make of it. I could use fresh inspiration!

    35. Paula

I cannot wait to see all the transformations of your new home. I knew this was the one you would pick!

    36. Wendi

Well you stumped me but after seeing some of the pics I so get it!! How exciting and I look forward to sharing in your new chapter!!! Btw that pool area is way cool!!!

    37. Kathy M

I’m in love with it already. I can see why you love it. There’s a feeling of warmth and home that radiates off even the few pictures you shared. Looking forward to see all the love you add to it.

    38. Angie

I am so excited to follow this new house journey. I love your decorating ideas and style!!!! Bring on the inspiration ???

    39. Jennifer W

Yay! I’m so HaPpY for you and all your family Marian! I see how God worked to the good for you again! I already see the fireplace and built ins like your old house so something familiar already. And it looks very roomy! Congratulations and wishing you all so much happiness! ❤️❤️

    40. Nichole

Our first home is a 1964 brick ranch. It’s so opposite of my preferred architectural style but we chose it because it checked all the boxes for our family. It’s been a fun challenge to decorate with antiques and vintage items while trying to stay true to the home. I can’t wait to see how you incorporate your style into the new house!

    41. Melissa @ The Inspired Room

As someone who just moved from a 1950s brick rambler I wasn’t in love with at first sight but saw what it could be, I can feel the creative wheels turning!

So much potential here to bring what you love into this style of home. You chose well and for the right reasons.

Can’t wait to see how you make it your own, I already picture it! Welcome home!

    42. Vicki

I didn’t get to yesterday’s post until today so I had to bypass the latest post and see if I could pick the house. I was torn but finally decided it had to be #2. The bones were good and if the bones are good, you could may it fabulous. It is exactly the kind of house I would love. My aunt had a similar house and I absolutely loved it. I can’t wait to see what you do with it. Have to go now because that note turned me into a sobbing mess. So sweet.

    43. Rebecca

We bought a 1956 brick ranch in an older upscale neighborhood right when the pandemic hit. We love it and are remodeling some spaces still. It has the best quirky character and we love not having stairs! The closets are tiny and we’ve really had to adjust to a small master bath but that’s ok. Painting the brick a dark grey with black trim has been a huge improvement! Can’t wait to see what you do to make it yours!

    44. Isabel Z

So very happy for you and your family and wish you many joyous years in a home that was meant to be. I LOVE the note and would frame it–what a special thing to have. I can’t wait how you make the home your own.

      • Lisa

I was hoping it would be the rambler Can’t wait to see how you decorate it!
        Congrats!

    45. Betty

I knew that house was perfect for you! You will work magic. Hope to see you at Lucketts !

    46. Melissa

Congratulations! Excited to watch as you put your vision, design, and touch into this house.

    47. Rita

I didn’t guess the ranch. I mean no staircase. Don’t know if this will be your forever home, but I have appreciated having everything on one floor. Can’t wait to see what you end up doing with it to make it your own

    48. Roberta

Congratulations! May God bless you home. ?

    49. Elaine Good

Sounds perfect! God knew all along where He wanted you to live this part of your life.

I think the sweet note was an affirmation.

Enjoy the journey and embrace the memories and moments you share in your new home.

    50. Lynn Rollins

I LOVE a brick ranch, I grew up in a brick ranch. They’re well built and easy living. AND A POOL?? Be still my heart. They’re great for kids being 1 level. I’m in my 60s and don’t do steps so a 1 level is a must for me. But for a family, laundry, cooking, etc, so many less steps to take. Love it and I know it will be spectacular, you have so many gifts and talents too numerous to mention. Best to you! I know it will be a home filled with love and community visiting often!

    51. Tiffany

It’s so pretty! This is truly my favorite style house and I hope to live in one someday. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to seeing what you do to yours. Congratulations on a new job, adventure, and home! God bless!

    52. Joanne

What a lucky house to have your family calling it home!

    53. Teresa

Before I did some detective work, which didn’t take long given the fact you had disclosed the realtors name, the county and closing date, I guessed #2. I knew the older 1800’s home sounded more your style but the longer commute, the busy highway, etc kind of ruled it out. You bought my favorite style of home besides a tudor. The classic brick rancher is a great home and ranchers are usually older homes in my area (Chester, VA) because builders have smaller lots to work with today and a two story takes less land.

Your SIL is right that ranchers are a sought after homes in many areas and I cant wait to see you make this home yours. I would image the pool will need to be re-surfaced and I was even wondering if you were thinking about vaulting the ceiling in the family room. Of course, you will be busy removing lots of wallpaper….lol. Congratulations again on your new home adventure. I think it was the perfect choice! BTW…..Marco Polo!

    54. Teresa

Love your process of picking this house. Also so kind in describing the house and the previous owners love for it. The note brought tears to my eyes as both my parents are gone & loved their home too. Her family found the right new owners who will love it too❤️Hope they can follow your process making it your own.

    55. JACK & POLLY

You picked a beauty, a brick ranch with a pool= fun!!

    56. Patricia Kasparian

I love this house, Marian. All I see is potential for renewed greatness here! Congratulations!!

    57. Betty Bashaw

So excited for you! Congratulations … and have fun making this house your home. ❤️

    58. Jacqueline

We bought a brick ranch 18 years ago that was very similar. It has been a great home for our family to grow in, and I love it more today than eighteen years ago!

    59. Becky

Awww, I guessed correctly! I didn’t think you’d want to be far from church or school or choosing a house that might be too small! Four years ago, we moved from a 1930 home we loved for 23 years to a 1957 traditional red brick home in a beautiful neighborhood. It was not the age I dreamed of, but it also had good bones, a great yard, and has been so much fun to redo! I thought you might be thinking like I was! Congrats—can’t wait to follow everything!

    60. Tammy

How exciting for you and the family. I look forward to seeing your stamp on this place. The fun part of shopping and furnishing it.

    61. Cindy

Oh that’s wonderful! I love brick ranches. They are so cozy and have so much potential. Plus you’ll eventually be happy not to have to deal with stairs! This is going to be massive fun for all of us to watch fix up this charming home.

    62. Gina

Congratulations! Wishing you and your family many years of happiness and good memories in your new home! Can’t wait to see what you do!

    63. Lorraine

Congratulations! My dad was a builder and I grew up in ranchers (that’s what my dad called them) that he built. It was his favorite style home… and I’m a fan also.

    64. Kemberly

So excited for you guys and look so forward watching the journey of you making this into your family home.

    65. Addie

Congrats!!!! The boys must be crazy with excitement for the pool. We had a pool when my boys were growing up and it is the best memories. I bet you are just itching to get in there and get busy. I can’t wait to see the “before” of the kitchen. You will transform this home to it’s former glory.
I am a bit confused about yesterday’s pictures. #2 appeared to be the home in MN that you blogged about..??? I am now thinking it wasn’t so much the pictures and more of the writing!!! I love a good guessing game.
That note is just precious. I kinda got a tear over it. I hope they live locally and can see how you revive and put all the love back into it.

    66. Terri Biggers

What a great house! It has so much potential and I know you’ll make it fabulous.

    67. Marybeth

How fun. I am looking for this exact same house. I’m tired of stairs and I want good bones. I’m excited for you to add your style. It will be wonderful!!!!!!

    68. Jen

Oh my goodness…the note at the end brought tears to my eyes! Can’t wait to watch you make this house your home.

    69. Krista

Congratulations! Can’t wait to see all the updates you make with it! The note is so sweet. If their family follows along on your blog, it will do their hearts so good to see the home become beautiful and loved once again. I grew up in a 1950’s ranch and my mother felt the same way about staying in it till her passing.

    70. Deborah Raney

I love all the reasons you chose this house. I feel almost as excited as if it was MY family that was moving. 😉 I can’t wait to see what you do with this wonderful place (I love ramblers!) and I’m so thrilled that you finally have a place to put all your amazing creativity to work!

    71. Teri

Congratulations! Love your new home. We bought a bungalow in a town full of old Victorian houses because I wanted quiet and cavity walls. It’s more of a challenge to give character to a newer home but more fun xx

    72. Jessica

It looks like a charming rancher with great bones. After you work your magic I’m sure it will be exactly to your taste a style! Congratulations again and looking forward to seeing it all come together.

    73. Marilee Reyes

Lovely. And it comes with a blessing.

    74. Kathleen

We had a similar listed, removed, back on market experience. I think that just tells you it’s meant to be❤️ The deep front porch, the pool, the autumn clematis and that note definitely the one. Oh what fun it’s going to be following along as you make it a home❤️❤️❤️❤️

And yes I guessed #2 was the winner?

    75. Jeanine

You will love not having stairs! Also, that beautiful sweet Autumn clematis would be almost enough to seal the deal for me – love it!

    76. Jessica

I LOVE brick ramblers! We moved from a beautiful two story home that needed nothing to a genuine fixer upper 1959 brick rambler. My husband wasn’t keen on the idea but I’m in love with it! Now if that other house will sell, I can get moving on the fixing upper part! (It’s in the Raleigh area, wouldn’t it be cool if one of your sister in law’s clients bought my house?! ?) Enjoy your new home!

    77. Becca

Oh, how wonderful! You can tell it’s a really lovely home and it will be beautiful with your touch! Sweet sleep and blessings to you and your family!

    78. Maria Grimanis

What a wonderful note to get! It’s so very nice when seller’s provide information about the home, something that rarely happens anymore, but that last line makes it all the more special. I would have cried.
I hope the house fulfills your dreams for it and your family settles in happily.
I can’t wait to see what you do with it!

    79. Sandy

      Yay!
Will enjoy watching your imagination for each space in this home take shape. Also the outdoors will be so much fun for your whole family.
Enjoy the process. Rooting for y’a!
What a sweet note for the owner’s family to leave.

    80. Rita C at Panoply

This is AWESOME. I noticed the clematis right off the bat when that photo came through on my scroll reading. A rancher is what all us older people want and cannot find (although we were lucky enough to snag a 1938 two-story adapted to single floor plan living last year, yay!). Your resale value will always hold, and if the pool is no longer wanted due to maintenance, that’s an easy fix. Congratulations! I can already see your diamond in the rough being transformed into a real gem with your talent and skills.

    81. Terry

This house seems perfect for the stage your family is in and will provide your blog with SO much material. Can’t wait to follow along and savor all your idea’s of transformation.

      • JoAnn

Number two seemed to be the clear choice due to location proximity to your school and church. I’m anxious to see which town you are in, as we have traveled I’m that area through the years.

    82. Karen

We were fortunate a few years ago to buy a ranch house very similar to yours. It also had a pool in the ground in the backyard! A retired military couple owned it and she had custom drapes that matched the furniture, a Tiffany pendant lamp over the kitchen table her husband bought her, and so many custom details. I was lucky enough to meet them both and we hit it off immediately during the walk-thru. It just made buying her home so special to me. It was destroyed in 2009 during a horrific Easter tornado. Now it’s just an empty lot and so heartbreaking to look at for me. I wish you many, many years of wonderful memories in your ranch rambler! I can’t wait to see all the updates and changes you all make! It looks like a house with a lot of potential!

    83. Tracy in MN

I’m a believer in Kismet (not just because my aunt Penny was the former owner of the Rochester show, Kismet). Your story about this house, every bit of it says to me, “It’s kismet.”

And perhaps I did a little looking at properties in Washington County where you said you landed, and happen to screen shoot this very home, thinking, “Marian would see great potential in this home.”

I’m excited for you. And, I cannot wait to see where you take this.

    84. Carolama

I love the respect you have given to home! As one who cares for my aging mother in her own home, I understand the importance and that has seeped through this woman’s home. I know you will turn it into your own beautiful home. Yes the final note you shared, brought a tear to my eye. God bless.

    85. Faerie Pabich

It will be SO exciting to watch you transform this amazing home into YOUR dream home! That sweet note will be your inspiration. That pool bring empty makes me nervous because where I live in Texas, an empty pool can come up out of the ground if it rains a lot or temperatures change quickly. Check and see if you need to fill it right away! Congratulations on your choice!

    86. Karen L.

So many of these comments are like my thinking–you have the perfect house for you and for your family’s future! May many years of happiness there be your blessing. He has indeed blessed y’all. Enjoy your new church, too, and may Pastor Jeff feel at home there as soon as possible.

    87. Bonnie Kilgore

      And a decent front porch!

    88. Kimberly

Last year we sold my Dad’s old Victorian house. He had owned it for 65 years. This year the buyers took cut flowers from his yard and brought them to his grave. It makes such a difference when you have the right buyers. Congratulations!

    89. Sharon W.

This looks so similar to the house I grew up in, in STL. I hope you have many happy years there!

    90. cate

WOW!! This will be a lot of fun to work on. Great bones. Minimal backyard work, minus cleaning the pool…which will be super relaxing and great exercise. Marion, thank you for all the posts leading up to this. You’ve taken us all on a journey and kept us all quilte entertained and guessing. I hope you know what a relief it is to know where you all will be and that it all worked out so well for you and your family! Best to you all. Am totally excited to see what you do with this one!

    91. Linda Greiss

Marion, How wonderful for you & your family! I have been following you for years & wish you the best in your new home!

    92. DianeH

      I knew it!
Your concern for the needs and wants of the rest of your family come over your wants, and as always, you will turn this house into a house that “Feels like Home”.
The photos you shared of the rambler are a flashback to the first view of our 1967 ranch house here in CA. The trim and wallpaper are so much alike. It took me 25 years to finally get our house to really feel like ours all the way. I’m sure your journey will be much faster, but a home is always a work in progress, it should never be stagnant.
      Happy homecoming!

    93. Deb Lande

And “His MOM” will be so delighted as she sees what you will do to make the house beautiful. It will warm her heart.

      Congratulations to your whole family!

    94. Liz

I can absolutely relate to the note. It made me cry also. My wonderful husband and I live in our home we built in 1970. It was and still is “my palace” And I hope to spend my last days here, but not anytime soon.

    95. Bea

Well this time I guessed correctly. I think you and your family will love having the pool! And that note from the family of the owner touched my heart. You had good reasons for selecting this house and I’m sure it will be just right for all of you. I will be very interested in following along with your projects that will turn the house into a unique home.

    96. Michele M. / Finch Rest

My VERY best wishes and prayers that your next chapter – in a beloved house with good kharma – is fabulous.
I cannot WAIT to be with you every step of the way as you make it YOUR dream house. That pool is going to be
awesome and a great way for the boys to make lasting friendships. And for whatever it is worth, that note that was
left for you? I burst into tears. Boy, how can it be the wrong decision with getting someone as tender as that?
May that dear mother of theirs rest in peace knowing the perfect family will be moving in. Whoo hoo!!!! Love it!!!!

    97. Angela

Yes yes yes!!! That pool!! It is going to be so much fun watching this transformation. Our house is a 1970 rambler (we call them ranchers around here). We bought it to grow old in. There is not ONE stair necessary in the house. You made such a happy choice, and the note is so beautiful. Love this!

    98. sandi m

This is so great for you and your family. Lovely scenery around you, too, to paint! I can envision your easel out near the pool.
My sleuthing found the listing photos and must say you’ll have a ball stylizing the rooms to your taste. Especially can’t wait to see how you redo the kitchen. 🙂
That sweet note is precious, worthy of one of your gold frames…
Let the fun begin. All of us readers cannot wait!!

    99. Connie

I love it, can’t wait to see the renovation, but first where do you start. Are you able to move in and do it as go living there?

    100. Pam

Yay for #2! That’s what I guessed. It sounds like the perfect solution and challenge for you.
The note was icing on the cake and gave my goosebumps.
      I’m so happy for you!

    101. Helen

#2! I guessed correctly! So happy for your and your family. I’m excited to see how you make this house your dream home.

      • Dalita

Ranch style or rambler homes are wonderful for raising children! I sure miss ours. Cottage living has its advantages, but I think a rambler is PERFECT! and you will have your stamp on it in no time….and I can’t wait to follow along!!!

      • Barbara Zuleski

You certainly have you have your work cut out for you! But if anyone can do it, you can!

    102. Laurie

I can’t wait to watch you fix “her” up! Seems like you can use the knowledge of several things you did at your last house in this house and make speedy headway in a few rooms!

Another plus for the boys is being able to meet kids in the neighborhood through having their school in the same neighborhood. As a kid I did not have that and only knew kids 2 years younger because they were the ones close by. That’s not good.

Am really curious about why the pool was left that way and if that damaged it. Are you going to cut up credit cards to tile the pool like that old Martha Stewart commercial? Maybe painting it a deep blue is enough!

    103. Amanda

How sweet to have them write such a note. ❤️❤️
I am excited to see what is ahead!
But IMAGINE how excited her family will be when you document and share all your ideas, options and progress via MMS blog and they can see how you reimagine their old home. ❤️❤️

    104. Kris

We have a ranch home–I know they aren’t the most visually stunning homes on the block, but they can tick all the boxes in terms of function. I love how you said that a home is for the life you want to live there. I feel like that gets forgotten these days. Congrats and I’m looking forward to how you love it up! (and I LOVE the note from the family member).

    105. Tracy Harper

I’m thrilled that you’ve moved further South! That is a good change for all of you! The Raleigh area is very nice with good schools, too.‘I’m in Murrells Inlet, below Myrtle Beach. Think the family will love the South! Can’t wait to see what you do inside and out!

      • Doreen Sargente

I thought Marianne is moving to Maryland, not Raleigh?

      • Heather

I believe they moved to Maryland. Sis is from Raleigh…

    106. Mary S

Oh wow!! A blank slate. I’m anxious to watch what you do with it.
I would start refinishing the wood floors b4 there is a lot of furniture
in there. Then, it’s good to go! So excited to for your family.

    107. mary

It’s the one I was thinking was your choice and seems like the best overall “family fit”!!!! I see a lot of paint in your future and you are the paint pro…excited to see what you do to make it Marion Marvelous!

      • Jennifer

Congratulations! I think you’ll love the rambler style and I know you will make it amazing. I’d like to suggest you get the pool inspected by a pool professional. This is our third summer in our home with a pool and each year we’ve been surprised by expensive repairs that were not caught by the realty inspection. Enjoy making your new home your dream spaces!

    108. Lorraine Oh

What a beautiful house, Marian, and that note! It filled my heart too.

    109. Cheryl

Marion, I know that what ever home you bought you will make it your own! I like brick ramblers. You will love creating the home you want and need. I hope you take us along for ride! Enjoy creating and good luck! I love the note, it brought tears to my eyes. ?❤️

    110. Fil

I love the note from the seller. When we sold our home in Sterling, VA to move to Raleigh, I left a booklet for the buyer, tips, hints, information. I entitled it Guide to Things That Go Bump in the Night. Congratulations to my son and family.

    111. MARY-ANN (FROM CANADA!)

So happy for you, Marian, Jeff and your boys! I look forward to seeing all the personal touches you incorporate into this home. Even though it will take some time, I know you will love making this house your precious home! May God continue to bless you all! Marian, that note is so special and I know that you will be including it in your home somewhere! How nice!

    112. Helene

We moved across the country to follow my husband’s dream job. We went from a 3 story Colonial style house to a much smaller 70’s ranch. We didn’t really have a choice, it was the faculty housing that the College gave to us. It was a huge change and adjustment and it’s a style of house I never would have chosen for myself, but it is such a blessing for the family. I think you will find this kind of house/pool/neighborhood style living to be just what you need as you enter the “older kid” stage. I have done many things to give this house a traditional New England interior with pops of MCM here and there to keep things fun and fresh. After a couple years of living here rent free the College offered us the opportunity to buy the home. We just closed July 6th. So I am very much along with your journey. Can’t wait to see what you do! You guys are amazing, don’t forget it! Thank you for your ministry and life’s work 🙂

    113. Sandi from Wisconsin

Congratulations on this lovely home and yard, with so much potential! I am going to enjoy following you, Marion, as you make it your family’s special haven.

    114. Susan

I really love the note from the previous family. That truly means a lot. I know whatever you do will be beautiful and that you will be very happy there. Being close to family is such a blessing and you are such a blessing to all that follow your story.

    115. Cindy

So exciting and it will be great for the boys. I can’t wait to see tge transformation.

      You make your homes beautiful!

    116. Jessica

Yay! Was hoping you’d chose the 70s ranch. We have a similar style home we purchased 5 years ago and I’m excited to see how you transform it. (Our pool was filled in before we bought it. Wish we still had it for our family of 6.)

    117. Martha

So happy for you! I guessed correctly. It will be a great house. And so nice that it comes to you having been well-loved and cared for.

    118. Terri Spencer

Yea!! I chose that one. The best part is that it was meant to come to your family, you all were given an obstacle and seemingly handled it with grace, thereby being able to receive “your” home at a reduced price! Sometimes rewards happen on Earth…Excellent news and thanks for the fun game. That house has all the potential in the world to be gorgeous, charming, classy and homey, all at once!

    119. Carolyn Kellam

It is going to be so beautiful! So happy for you and your family!

    120. Carolyn Dietrich

This wasn’t the house I thought you bought, but I know that when you get through with making it yours it will be stunning like the one you moved from and I can jhardly wait to see how you change it to make it your own.

    121. JC

Congratulations! I knew it was #2. Location is key. The house you can make your own. Have fun planning and dreaming! Can’t wait to see the results!

    122. Jen C

Congratulations! I’m sure you are anxious to get started with your plans on making your new home a haven for your family. You have a great touch so we all know that it will be beautiful and cozy. We lived in an older home, moved to a ranch due to my husband’s job, and then retired in a colonial bilevel with open concept. I’ve always wanted an older home but this home works for us and our family when everyone is home for a visit. We have made changes to make it our own. I was surprised that our antiques have fit in beautifully. Thank you for including us on your journey. Best of luck.

    123. TAG

Congratulations on finding a house that works for your family! Welcome back to the Mid-Atlantic! The perfect place to live! We all look forward to following along as you transform it into a home that reflects your style. Most people cannot have their dream home and you show us how to make any home special. We have been in our current 1980s center hall colonial home 30 years and made timeless renovations and furniture purchases we continue to enjoy. To keep things fresh and updated we continue to makes small changes.

    124. Connie

Good choice, We live in a 1960 brick ranch house. Well built with nice size bedrooms and lots of builtins and storage. We added on sunroom and minor updates to kitchen. New flooring.
Look forward to watching you work your magic !

    125. Amanda

I am excited to see what you do with this house to make it your own. I also want to bless you for choosing a house with such a practical mindset as to considering location and family. It’s not always easy to do that when it seems like the dream house is also in the picture, but is truly not a practical choice. I think yall will love this house and have lots of great times there!

    126. SueA

Great choice! And the pool will become a teen magnet through high school so you’ll be able to keep a healthy eye on them during those wild years! Enjoy!

    127. Blessings ~ Donna

What a blessing YOU will be to this loved home! Congratulations to your family. I can’t wait to see your magical transformation!

    128. Shirley Graham

So glad you have found a home for you and your family!! Congratulations!!

    129. Frances K.

Congratulations! It’s not the house I thought you would pick but I so get it now. The part of the note you shared brought tears to my eyes and I know your family is the perfect one to live in, and love it.

    130. Nancy Cox

So excited to see what you do to it. This was such a sweet post. You certainly made the past owners family feel good.

    131. Kathie B

This home will be great for indoor/outdoor living and I think you’ll will be pleased not to have to climb stairs to the bedroom especially with your foot. I can’t wait to see the chances. Congratulations on this exciting step. God bless.

    132. Esther Shafer

Based on the note- you should name her “Dreamy” Excited to watch the makeover.

    133. Babs

How exciting! Can’t wait to see what you will do with this wonderful house.

    134. Suzy Linger

Love that this home reappeared on the market; it was meant to be yours. My dad was a home builder in the 60’s/early 70’s in Montgomery County, MD and built several ramblers. Definitely good bones! Can’t wait to see what you do. Hope the sweet widow is watching in delight from heaven.

    135. Ramona

I am giddy! I love to see your journey as you transform a house into a home!
My mom and dad built our first house Ranch style house in 1970, red carpet, avocado appliances, shag carpet. Their mortgage was $14, 500, 30 year loan. Yes! Can you believe it?
I will be checking your blog everyday and following!
      Home Sweet Home!

    136. Cheryl

      ♥️ I understand…all of what you’ve shared here??

    137. Amy

Oh my, I know that house in Hagerstown. ?
      Fabulous lot, yard & house.
Wishing you & your family much happiness & joy in your new home.

    138. Mary

That handwritten note is your homes legacy-of-sorts. A testament to deep, long-standing love poured over all its surfaces, inside and out. Please consider show casing that precious piece of history, connecting like a ribbon from the former family to your own. With your talent, I know you could do it justice in a display. I grew up in a 60’s rambler in TN. and forty years of tender memories never leave me. Thanks be to God for this blessing for your family.

    139. Amy

My dream is to put a backyard pool into the ground at our place. It gets HOT in Nebraska, and my hubby and I work hard. I’d love to have a cool pool to jump into in the middle of the day! I’ll be following to see how you restore this place! It’s beautiful.

    140. Bettsi

Ohmygoodness! That little note made me cry- how perfectly sweet. It is a dream house. It’s obvious what a good quality home it is. The great thing about ranch houses is they’re comfortable for families and empty nesters. They’re great houses for a full lifetime. Congratulations, Parsons Family!

    141. Jane Willard

Wanted to welcome you to Maryland! My hubby and I met you and your Dad a few years back when you crashed your friend’s yard sale in PA. We had a lovely time chatting with you and I bought a painting (and lots of other stuff).
