This is maybe the most random blog post and tip video I have ever made, but as I am moving, I was asked to share packing and wrapping tips and I always view questions as a great source of inspiration for the kind of content I should create.  (In case you missed it, HERE is a post about why we’re moving.)  Also, I’m spending most of my time wrapping and packing these days, so I don’t have much else to talk about!  We move in a week, so this season is almost over.  Whew.

So, one of my special talents is being able to wrap things very neatly in tight bundles in newsprint. I know…don’t be jealous of my giftedness!  I became aware of this gift as I watched other people wrap things in newsprint paper and it ended up being a crumpled mess that came undone easily.  My superpower is a rare one and I need to share my wrapping tips with the world!  We can wrap better and save breakable things from breaking!!

Of course, I’m being facetious, but wrapping things neatly and securely plays into my fondness for order and tidiness.  It’s a small thing, but it does keep your fragile items more secure and you can fit more in a box when the wrapped bundles are tight and smooth.

I know.  You’re wondering where this gift came from.  Was I born with it?  Is it hereditary?  Did some supernatural event happen to me involving newsprint and shrink wrap?

My dad is actually an excellent wrapper, so you might think he passed his wrapping tips down to me…

My dad was in the Army, so he was trained to do everything tight with creases.  He folds laundry like a champ and tucks in the bed sheets without a wrinkle.  I dreaded it when my mom was out of town and he had to do my hair.  My ponytail was so tight that I would have a headache by lunch.  You might think he taught me all of his wrapping tips…

But, my wrapping skills were not acquired through my dad.  I actually learned how to properly wrap breakable items in newsprint when I worked at Mikasa out of college. Mikasa primarily sells breakable items like dishes, glasses, stemware, and crystal. I worked on the displays and at checkout, so I did a ton of wrapped and got pretty good at it, which has come in handy for moves, shipping, and packing things to sell at an antique market.

It’s easier to show you my wrapping tips than it is to write them out, so here is a video for those who wish to have the same impressive wrapping and packing skills as I have.  You will amaze your friends and family.

See…  you never know what you’re going to get when you visit my blog.

I am an excellent wrapper also and not just for moving items but for shipping the many gifts I send each year to family & friends. For the gift part I line the box with pretty tissue paper then lay down the items which are indiv.wrapped and place more tissue in between. I have received many compliments on my gift wrapping so much so that the recipient does not want to open the gift. My dear friend said she looks at it for days before opening. I am now in the process of sorting out my house so when I come across a piece I think someone else would like I wrap it and send it off via the mail. Everybody loves receiving unexpected Happy Mail package !

After watching your video I realized I am a decent packer, after all. Having moved 5 times in 40 years should equal some savvy about packing. I will have to look into that plastic wrap as that would be very helpful.
You are so calm about this move…something to strive for. I have one more move coming in the near future and I have been decluttering like mad…but also agonizing about it. Calmness beats agony every time.

I can’t wait til I get to wrap something. This was so simple yet why haven’t been doing it this way ?!?!?!
Good luck in the next two weeks.

      Where are you moving too?

I missed the link to your blog about the move. I saw it after I asked the above question. I will be praying for you. I moved last fall and it was very stressful but God led me to a beautiful cottage in Berkeley Springs, WV. I am still unpacking and getting settled, it will take time to make this house “Feel Like Home.” This spring I planted my first vegetable garden. I am planting fruit, and nut trees and many flowers. I also have a long list of decorating projects, that I will be working on in the next couple of years. Making a home is a process.

May God guide you to the place he has set aside for you, Acts 17:26. Peace and grace to you and your family.

Excellent way to wrap breakables! It’s funny, but I wrap my things like that, too, but now I know how to do it better, thanks to this video. I don’t know where I picked it up–maybe an old job or just instinct. I have also always loved to wrap presents, so maybe that’s where some of my wrapping techniques came from.

Great techniques and a very helpful video, but that’s normal procedure for you! Thanks for all your great posts and enjoy the journey of finding your next hope.

Have a safe and happy move, Marian!

Thank you for this wrapping lesson! Now I’m wondering about boxing those things. Do you make “nests” for breakables inside the moving boxes? We will be moving next fall so I’m getting rid of a lot and thinking hard about how to make the packing, moving, unpacking as painless as possible. Your calm, optimistic demeanour is inspiring! Best wishes from Canada for your big move! And enjoy your “nomadic” summer!

Thank you for sharing these helpful tips. I have always placed the item in the middle and wrapped it so I’ll be following your techniques now! Happy moving!
