I have been busy getting some new things priced and ready for the next barn sale at Chartreuse and for a ladies shopping night at Wild Rose this Thursday evening. I finally got around to giving a few things I bought at the Raleigh Flea Market a makeover, so I could add them to the growing pile
I’m assuming these wooden numbers were once house numbers. They somehow ended up in a flea market and I really loved the shape. The finish…not so much. A coat of red acrylic paint calmed down with burnt umber brightened them up. I finished them with a rub of asphaltum glaze by Valspar.
I was really wishing I had a “2” and a “5” to use on my Christmas mantle, but this was all they had. I did buy papier mache numbers at Hobby Lobby today, though, to use for that purpose.
The pair of doves were sprayed a sorta silver paint color, but it just wasn’t doing it for me. It was, however, the perfect base for a finish coat of German glass glitter. Oh yeah. These look awesome perched on a tree. I wish I had more. Click here for my video tutorial on using German glass glitter.
Speaking of glitter, my husband made a comment a couple of days ago that cracked me up. He said, “Glitter is the new cat hair in our home.” Meaning, it’s everywhere. This brought to mind a tip I read recently in Real Simple’s book.
A lint roller is the perfect way to clean up glitter…especially if you use the tinsel variety.
And it really works!
Oh, and my orange, speckled table top behind the lint roller is no more. I spent the afternoon and evening stripping the dated finish. The wood under the black splatters is just beautiful. I now need to decide if I want to leave it natural or go with my usual dark walnut stain.

The letters and doves look great, glass glitter can turn any ugly duckling into a swan its pure magic!!! and that's one great tip for picking up glitter.Right now everything in my house is shimmering lol.Iguess I'll have to break out the old lint roller and get to work!
Great little makeovers. My husband hates for me to use glitter, it does tend to get everywhere! Good tip about the lint roller!
Your treatments are always fabulous!
"…the new cat hair." Hilarious! The doves look great!
P.S. I strung my N-O-E-L letters (from you) on twine and draped them over my sheet music wreath (inspired by you). It looks great!
I heard once on a paper crafting message board "Glitter is the herpes of the crafting world. Once you have it- you can never get rid of it!"
Love your glitter letters and tutorial. I'm new to your blog but have added you to my favorites. Love the video of your new shop..congratulations!! Can't wait to see more..
I'm sure you have, or can come up with something that resembles, French Hens and Calling Birds to use your 3 and 4 for.
🙂
I love those doves! What a beautiful transformation!
What a great and very simple tip using the lint roller for sparkle pick ups…..
1st time having a look around your blog and I just wanted to say I love the black birdcage in the background of the 3 4 picture…
Have a great Sunday.

That sounds like my husband. He was jsut complaining the other night that it is everywhere!
I laughed when I read the comment about the old finish. I had already scrolled back up (before reading the comment) because I could not believe that such a finish was in existence in your house!:)I am sure it will be gorgeous no matter what you decide.
I love the doves. And what a great idea, having the 2 and 5 on your mantle for Christmas.

What a creative girl you are, Marian! I never would'ave thought of "glitterizing" them! They turned out so pretty! 🙂

I love the doves! And I'm definitely going to have to keep an eye out for a "2" and a "5". What a cute idea for the mantle. And your husband's quote made me laugh out loud! 🙂
Keep the finish natural for a while. If you don't like it, it's easier to stain it darker later, right? Ann
Oh the doves are great! And thank you for the lint roller tip. Sometimes the best things are the simplest.
These doves are beautiful. I would never have thought to do that.
