Recreating Costume Jewelry

This project is super simple.  Like, “embarrassing that I’m even showing you how to make them” simple, but I’m going to insult your craftiness and post a tutorial, anyway.
I love vintage costume jewelry, but I’m not about to don my rhinestone clip-ons and mink shrug for a day of furniture refinishing.  (That image made me laugh.)  But, I find it a sad thing to leave them sitting in a jewelry box.  Why not use the clips for something else?  Clip-on magnets is what came to mind.
Gather broaches, clip-ons, belt buckles, pins and any other pretty sparkly thing you can glue a magnet to.  I purchased mine from a great yard sale for a quarter each.
Buy a roll of magnet from a craft store and cut the magnet to size.  I purchased mine at AC Moore for under $1.00.  Use some super glue or Gorilla Glue to adhere the magnet to the back of the piece of jewelry.  Allow glue to dry.
The clips are great to hold business cards, pictures, postcards, reminders, etc.  They will bring a little bling to your fridge or any magnetic surface.  (Except one that is painted in “magnetic paint”, which does not work at all.  I’ve tried it…don’t bother.)
I’m off to do some gold leafing and painting.
Back in the saddle again.

I MUST steal from your creative genius and do this!!!! I have an extensive collection of costume jewelry that was passed down to me by three grandmothers and one aunt and while I do wear a few of the bigger pieces on the lapel of my navy peacoat in the winter, most of them sit in the jewelry box untouched. I have always been at a loss as to what to do with them! Thanks for posting this!
      PS~ I have a mink stole too! 🙂

THAT IS a great idea! One thing I've learned is always turn the piece over and see if it has a halmark or a name and look it up and see if it's worth anything. I did that and found out a pin is worth about 50 bucks and I paid 2 for it. Plus a ring I bought at a church sale for 1 dollar is worth about 170 bucks, turned out it is real silver!

These are beautiful! I will have to make some with old costume jewelry that I have. Love & blessings from NC!

This is a great idea, Miss Mustard Seed–you've inspired me to look through my mother's jewelry boxes to see if there are some pieces I might be able to put to good use!

I am not insulted at all, lol…I have a pile of these that belonged to my grandmother and they mostly stay stored away…you have given me a reason to get them out and a way to enjoy them every day. I lol'd at the image of you distressing furniture in your mink shrug and clip ons, hehehe

I love this! I have even thought of decorating my bed pillows with my old brooches. Sort of giving a little bling to the bed. And that will let me enjoy them year round as well. Thanks for a great idea!~Ames

such a great idea! I remember playing with my grandma's clip on earrings, much like the ones you have on here. Love it- great use for a pretty item.

I've been keeping an eye out for some great vintage pieces to do magnets for a while now but I've not gotten lucky yet. However, I would have NEVER thought the clip-on ones could be used to hold things. I probably would have tried to break the back off. I am so glad you showed this! Your blog is so inspiring. I get so excited when I see a post by you in my Google Reader.

    19. Erin

No offense taken here! I am actually glad to see this, my oldest daughter would love this! Guess I'll have to look for some clip ons eh?
