Last week was a busy one and we got a ton of things accomplished.  I’m a bit whipped from it and I need to pace myself better, but it feels good to be really productive.

Here’s one of the pieces I picked up and painted this week…

milk painted hutch | miss mustard seed

I spotted it on Craig’s List and immediately texted my dad to see if he could get it for me.

I have been looking for a great hutch or cabinet that could be a focal point of my booth at Lucketts and I knew this one was perfect for that.  It reminds me a lot of the hutch I use in the studio…

I love how that one turned out, so I painted it the same way…MMSMP Mora on the inside and Shutter Gray on the outside.  Here is a video showing how I prepped the piece and applied the first coat of paint…

I filmed applying the second coat as well, so I’ll share that soon.

I haven’t applied a finish to it, yet, and I’m not sure I’m going to.  The matte finish is so beautiful on its own and reminds me a lot of antique painted French/Swedish/Belgian pieces.  We’ll see.

It was so fun to fill with ironstone and other goodies I’ve been collecting to sell at the market.  They really brought the piece to life.

I ordered some antique glass handles for the drawers and doors.  They should be here in a few days and I’ll show what they look like on.

After a busy week, I did have some time to rest and hang out with my family, but we did get a few things done over the weekend.  We installed the toilet in the upstairs bathroom and I put in the stair runner today.  I am planning to get the wallpaper done tomorrow morning and I have several helpers coming on Tuesday to paint furniture and strip chairs.  Things are a-hustling and a-bustling…

  1. I think this piece turned out wonderfully! Oh how I wish I could come shop your booth- looks like you’ve found plenty of treasures! 🙂

  2. It’s so incredibly beautiful, I love the two colors together. It’s amazing without the hardware, but I know the hardware will really make it sparkle.

  3. Hi there,
Don’t want to feel like a critiquing school teacher but thought you may want to change the title on your milk paint video. the one on the picture says, “Applying the SECOND coat of milk paint” rather than FIRST. Keep up all the inspiration! Thanks from New Zealand!

  4. I love that new hutch!! You sound like a busy girl, but extremely productive! I can’t wait to see the stairs runner, I’m sure it’s going to be fantastic.

  5. oh man, how I love this! I’ve been hunting for a hutch like this that the base part is deeper than the hutch part. I want to use it for more of a coffee station. The beadboard backing and the drawers and doors! love it all. Cant wait to see it with the glass knobs

  6. I’m pretty sure this hutch will fly out of your booth at the market as soon as the market opens. It turned out beautifully!

  7. This is such a great look. The colors are absolutely wonderful, really soft and so visually appealing – especially with the blue and the stoneware.

  8. Hi Marian,
Love this hutch! The color combination is gorgeous! I have a question and forgive me if someone has already asked this. You seem to always find amazing things on craigslist for great prices. If you don’t mind me asking, what do you generally search for in the search box? I find that when antiques are posted in my area, people always want a lot of money for them. Unless it just has to do with where I live (south Florida). Thanks for any tips! Kathy

  9. Lovely Paint Job!! Can’t help but think this cupboard was a hoosier in an earlier life; the size of the drawers are each different and the hardware look like hoosier trademarks! Lots of them get separated from their tops, and this pairing with a hutch top was ingenious by someone if that’s what happened in fact! If the bottom drawer is tin inside and the base has a slide out breadboard, than it’s a hoosier for sure. In an event, it was a very lucky find, or should I say Luckett Find!! Awesome!!

    1. It has the shape of one, but it’s not a hoosier. This piece looks like it was custom built by someone all at one time. The scale is larger than most hoosiers and it doesn’t have the tin drawer, bread board, etc.

  10. The hutch turned out beautifully and you only took a week to do it! I had that hutch for 12 years and never got around to re-doing it. I’m glad you got it and took care of it. By the way, how did you get that “varnish” off, particularly the bead-board area?

I have a 75 year old handmade cedar chest that I will be listing soon if you are interested.

    1. Debbie, I was going to e-mail you the “after” pictures in case you didn’t see them on the blog. It is such a beautiful piece and I was excited to paint it, so I got right to it! I actually didn’t strip the finish, but just lightly sanded it and I used the Bonding Agent in the first coat.

  11. This is a great hutch and a wonderful find. I don’t blame you for having your dad scoot over and snatch it up for your. The paint color Mora on the inside and Shutter Gray on the outside was a great choice. I must mention the accessories….the scales (lovin them to pieces), the cutting boards, the blue and white dishes…oh my!!!

  12. Hi Marian,
I love this hutch too! But then again I love everything you do. Question…if you don’t put a finish over it won’t the milk paint just keep rubbing off? I like the matte finish look too, but I thought milk paint had to be finished.

    thanks,
    barbara
