Today we loaded all of the things I’ve been shopping for and working on for weeks. Here are some of the pieces we packed…
This is my mom’s favorite dresser. We actually have a three-way wager going on which dresser will sell first. We’ll see who’s right…
Here’s the channel-back chair. I must say, this is a piece I patted myself on the back for. I was actually giggling as my mom and I finished the cushion last night and set it in place. I couldn’t believe that I did that!
Here’s the French settee…
…and some other things…
I just finished this dresser today and I shared a snapshot on my Facebook page and it blew up! (In the figurative, social media definition of the word.) It was so fun to see the positive reaction, especially when this was a piece I really struggled on (hence finishing it at the last minute.) It was in the ugly stage for a long time, but I saw it through and it is definitely my favorite piece this year. The piece is actually already sold, though, and the new owner has knobs for it. I’ll show you the room I painted it for and will beg for a photo of it once the coral Anthropologie knobs are on. I’m going to have to do another like this again…
I hired some of the guys from our youth group to help load the truck. It’s always funny bringing them into my weird little world of antiques and blogs where I’m “semi-famous” among a tiny circle of people. They laugh at some of the things I’m selling and laugh harder when I tell them someone will buy it. They say things like “the bottom of this box is a little sketch” and play with my typewriters and pose for pictures when I’m trying to snap a shot of something before it’s loaded…

(His mom reads my blog and will enjoy that, I’m sure. Can’t you tell he’s shy?)
So, a good portion of my stuff was outside as we waited for the truck to arrive. Clouds started to gather and we could hear thunder, but it was still sunny and looked like it was just going to miss us. The truck arrived and we loaded the dressers as I nervously watched the skies. It looked like we’d be okay. I went to the basement to remove the top from the farmhouse table and I hear pit-pat-pit-pat-PIT-PAT-PATPATPATPATPAT. It took about half a second to register that the pit-pat sound that grew faster and louder was rain.
I knew the dressers were in the truck, but a vision of my French settee, that I had worked so hard on, sitting outside getting rained on, ran through my brain. I sprinted up the basement steps and around the house screaming, “Get the French settee into the truck!! GET IT IN THE TRUCK! THE SOFA THING! GET IT IN THE TRUCK!!” I know those teenage guys don’t really get my world, but they heard the desperation in my voice and scurried around to get anything waxed or upholstered into a dry place. A few things got a little wet, but the rain stopped after a few minutes and we were able to dry it all off before packing the rest of the truck. Those guys were awesome.
When I calmed down, I realized this was a great reminder to me that it’s just stuff. Yes, I worked really hard on it all and I don’t want it to be ruined, but a few raindrops aren’t a big deal. It may be upholstered in Hungarian grain sack, but it’s still just stuff. Maybe I needed that rain shower…
So, I’ve been really behind on other things as I’ve been working on Lucketts, so the giveaways I usually hold have crept up on me. I was going to post them tonight, but the day got away from me and I really need a shower and some sleep. I’ve decided I’ll run the “I’m sad I can’t come to Lucketts” giveaway after Lucketts, but the time is ticking for me to find out who is traveling the furthest to come to shop this weekend. (Donna, you don’t count!) If you’re coming a good distance, calculate the mileage from your town to Leesburg, Virginia and leave it in the comments (make sure you leave your e-mail in the contact field.) The winner receives a $50 credit to spend in my booth at the Antique Market. I’ll e-mail and announce the winner on Friday, May 17, 2013.

Your items look fabulous! I wish I could come to the sale. Once it’s over and you’ve had a chance to rest I’m hoping that you will do a tutorial on how you upholstered that channel back chair! Please, please, please….. I have one “in waiting”. I’d love to have some pointers on how to go about reupholstering it. Your’s looks great!
I have a petite chair with a channel back too. We have had the fabric for 10 years and finally the chair and fabric and place for it all have aligned. Your tutorial is the last thing :).
Just found your site and am still catching up.
thanks
rick
I’m SO excited to meet you in person this weekend, Marian! I just looked up the mileage from my town to Leesburg and the shortest route is 501 miles! I’ll be flying, though, so I’m not sure I could take anything with me anyway. Well, maybe some paint and wax! 😉 See you soon!
Everything looks beautiful!! Someday those boys will love it just as much (one can hope) hehe. I especially love the channel back chair!! Just gorgeous!! And exactly what I was looking for. Next year will come quickly I hope! Please take lots of photos!! And remember to just breath. 😉
The boy lounging on the setee reminds me of a teen cersion of those Ryan Gosling graphics! “Girl, I don’t mind giving up my recliner. I know how hard you worked to reupholster this beautiful setee”
Ha! That’s perfect.
LOL, that’s absolutely hilarious! So true!
I’ll be in Upperville for a wedding this weekend. If we have the opportunity, I may swing by Luckett’s. If not, I’ll be thinking of you all. 🙂
That is so funny! I was trying to explain the “Hey girl…” thing to my mom and we were cracking up.
Oh it’s going to be so fabulous! I wish I lived close enough to attend. I’ll have to plan a “road trip” some time so I can experience this great show place. I can’t wait for more pictures of it. Have fun.
Traveling from a small town a (little south of Pittsburgh) Connellsville, PA
190 miles! Bringing my copy of your book hoping you will sign it!
Can’t wait to get there! We are traveling 214 miles from Roanoke, VA.
Everything is soooo beautiful. I would have croaked if I had worked so hard and my gorgeous pieces got rained on. That is way too much hard work to get ruined. I’m so looking forward to seeing the pictures from Lucketts. Have a great time and best of luck!
I just cracked up at the idea of you running and screaming to get the settee in the truck. I could see myself doing that too!
I am going to enter on behalf of my boss, who is traveling 447 miles (one way) plus a 30 minute ferry ride. She’s bringing a trailer & truck so if she wins I am going to have her pick out a dresser for my house – fair trade right 😉 Have fun this weekend!
I love the dresser that is your mom’s favorite. I like it so much that I am going to do something very similar to my grandmother’s dresser. This is a huge deal because I am finally feeling embolden enough to paint the only piece of my beloved grandmother’s furniture. You have a lot to do with me being ready to change this piece. Well, you and my grandmother saying in my head, “Suzie – it’s just furniture. Make it pretty and I will love it.”
I’ll be traveling 150 miles and can’t wait to see what everyone brings this year.
Traveling from Greensboro, NC. 279 miles. Woohoo can’t wait!! I’m coming to your booth first and have a truck to carry our finds!! We are Luckett virgins…first time!! Haha!!
We are driving 561 miles from Kittery, ME with our 2 boys ages 5 and 2 yrs! Wish me luck!
You have worked so hard, each piece is beautiful. Thanks for sharing a small part of your world, can’t wait to see and buy Saturday morning. I don’t think your booth is going to stay full long. Safe travels in, excited to see you, your family and friends.
Hi! I may have a good shot at this one….I am traveling from Tequesta, Florida…according to my iPhone it is 1030 miles to Lucketts :)…. I can’t wait….packing now ….see me smiling…. 🙂
So gorgeous!! I absolutely love the channel back chair, the chest with floral detail and the one your mom loves! Would love to be there. Lucky are the people who get to purchase your items! Best wishes for a rain-free, successful weekend (either or wouldn’t be a bad thing, right?!).
Rita C.
I loved all that you have shown us!!! I sooooo wish I could be there at the sale! You will be left with an empty space thats’s for sure! Beautiful stuff!
K
I know my travel distance won’t be the further but I’m coming from Maryland – 87.38 miles. I’ll see you there!!
Someday, some. day. I will get to come to Luckett’s. Everything is just so beautiful and so perfect and that little blue and white chest speaks to me every time I peek at it…..sigh, someday….
Whew! I’m tired just reading about all you’ve done. I love the two pieces with the blue, especially the one with the white accents. It’s so unique! Have a great weekend.
Coming from Fort Knox, KY, 610 miles. Can’t wait!
I briefly contemplated jumping in the car on Saturday at 5 am (mapquest says it is about a 4 hour drive for me). But, that would throw my family into a tailspin…lol. Maybe I can plan now for next year instead. The last dresser with the decorative painting awaiting new knobs from its new owner is my favorite. Can’t wait for more inspiring photos to come. Have a great sale!
As an aside, my kids and DH gave me your book and some leisurely time to read it for Mother’s Day. I really enjoyed it and am inspired to make our house reflect the family who lives here. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for sharing all of the details! I am always bowled over by the painty goodness! That settee! I can only imagine how great a nap would be on that grain sack!
Thinking of you as our skies here in Ohio cloud over and the occasional raindrop falls here too! I am loading up in just few more minutes and I so hope the rains hold off!
40.5 Miles! Thank God I live in VA!
May I ask how much fabric did that settee require? I have a very similar one that I need to work on. Thank you..Super Excited about Saturday!

Just wait til that cutie boy on the seatee marries a girl who ends up just like you do!!!! Talk about pay back for “making fun of you”. 😉 Bawahahabahaha!!
I am in love with that highboy dresser, you didn’t mention the name of that paint color, care to share? Thanks!
See ya on Saturday morning, expect a huge Deaf Chick Hug from me! xoxo
Wow you sure have been working hard! Your items for Lucketts are beautiful! It’s suppose to be a lovely weekend here in New Jersey so here’s hoping you get the same in Virginia!
My husband gave me your book for Christmas. I’m going to bring it with me, and maybe you’ll have time to sign it for me?! This will be my first visit to Lucketts, but I’m sure it won’t be my last! Cant’ wait to see all your delicious things! I’m sure I’ll go home with at least a couple of things! Praying the weather holds for the weekend!!
Oh how I would love to win some money towards your dreamy wares:)
Thank you!
I wish I could come. I would TOTALLY win haha! Or would you disqualify me? It’s even more than Donna. I calculated it and it’s almost 4000 miles flying distance. Can you believe I was in Gettysburg last Summer, meeting with a friend from Leesburg? I was one of your followers already but didn’t know where you were located. I’m going to send him an e-mail about Lucketts fair. His wife loves antiques! I assume she’s already going.
I love it all. Wish I lived closer.
Marian, I’m so jealous of everyone who will be at the Lucketts sale. I live over 9 hours away so it’s just too far for me to travel, at least this year! Would love to come just for the experience and to see your painted pieces and finishes in person. Someday! Have a great weekend.
A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.! Sleep and a shower? Why, you lazy thing 😉 I live in FL but my daughter in VA is hoping to be there. May God bless all your hard work and sacrifices!!
Marian, you have stepped up your game to a whole new level. Those dressers are absolutely outstanding. I can’t imagine anything lasting more than a few hours. I wish I could be there, but will be in spirit. Have fun.
325 miles! See you in a couple of days!
breida
ps. i think i want the piano bench. . .
1,252 miles and it will take 18 hours and 46 minutes to get there and believe me – I would be there if I could!!! Wishing you the best of luck with selling your ‘stuff’ and I truly like the last dresser best of all.
Love it all, especially that French settee, which I picture strapped to the top of my Jetta for the 273 mile trek home! I was totally scoping out that photo of signs for a little glimpse of a sign with dried lavender!
What a lovely collection! I esp like the dresser with the floral painting on it.
Do you ever do tutorials?
Thanks for the opportunity!
Everything looks amazing! I hope it goes really, really well!
Everything looks great and the dressers are just stunning. Wish I loved closer. Have a great time!
Great job, Marian! One of these days ill make it to Lucketts. 🙂
What paint color is that on Mom’s favorite dresser? Anyone? I know Marian will be too busy to answer this. Thanks! 😀
Maggie
My journey will be 8,563 miles (or 13,779 kilometers for the converted, sounds further too!) and I’ll be going to Luckett’s
In spirit 🙂
I have been reading your updates via e-mail for weeks about Lucketts and am so so happy to say I will be there Saturday morning!! I absolutely love the yellow dresser (any ideas of the price) hoping to be able to get a good look at that plus a whole lot more of your things. Hopefully bring some home! 🙂 you are so talented and such a lovely home you have!
Only coming 150 miles from Harrisburg PA!
Oh how I adore your talent! It’s always been my dream to search for great finds to redo for a living! Maybe someday!
I live in Mill Creek Washington, so won’t be driving down… but I am painting a cabinet today in Luckett’s Green!!! Have a great and sunny sale.
Waaaaaaaa! I just clicked on Joss website & I the sale has ended! I am so sad !!!!! I wanted those drapes so bad. Is there anywhere else I can get them?
Guess I’m not gonna win this one. I live about 3 miles from the Lucketts Store (you’ll pass my house on 15 on the way to set up). Hope to stop in on Sunday! Enjoy!
WOW! Everything looks awesome. I really do not know where you find time to do it all. And do it so well. So, about the channel back chair……….how -did- you do it? Have a great time at Lucketts, alas, I am in illinois .
Fabulous job on that chair…fabulous!
Although, I’m sure we aren’t the furtherest, my family is traveling from NW Ohio, near by Toledo. We will be driving 475 miles. But every mile will be worth it to see all of the amazing items, furniture, and displays. I’m eagerly holding my breath to be in the company of so many talented people. About a year ago we opened an antique booth in the local Amish area, which is rich with visitors. I’ve learned so much from you via your blog. Thank you for all your hard work and your kindness and light which shines through your blog and your beautiful creations. You have been an inspiration.
Everything looks great! I am sure all of your hard work at crunch time will all be worth it as everything flies out of your space at the Luckett’s show. Good Luck!
Just wanted to wish you a wonderful, fun time at Lucketts! Looking forward to reading all about it (and all the posts on the amazing pieces you have shown lately!).
The chair is GREAT !!! The settee is GREAT !!!
I’m sure you will do GREAT at your sale. Sure wish I could be there ;(
Take pictures to share !!!
Hi!
Everything looks so wonderful!!! My sister and I were seriously planning on coming to Lucketts but when I looked at the date again decided not too….. It is PROM weekend and I have a senior and a sophomore going so thought that I should stay home for the weekend… We are both sad.
I hope that you have a wonderful show and the weather holds out for you! I LOVE all of the things that you are taking and only wish that I could be there to see them in person and meet you as well!
Good luck with your sales!
Tracy in Ohio
I have a channel back chair EXACTLY like this. It was recovered last year and it looks like the twin sister to yours! Now if I could just find a settee like yours:)!!!!
I am not able to attend but I sure wish I could. Everything you have shown is beautiful. You are very talented and have a wonderful eye for what looks good.
Best of luck at the show. I bet your booth will be cleared out in no time.
It all looks so beautiful and I totally get the rain shower thing! Good luck! Can’t wait to see some photos of the event. x
That floral dresser is absolutely gorgeous!
You gave me an idea now what to do with a tiny little dresser I got at an antique shop today…
Hope you sell out at Lucketts… Or maybe not. Maybe you should bring some items back and sell to us online folk who can’t make it to Lucketts. 🙂
I am sooooo excited to get to see your beautiful items!! We have traveled from WV and actually are already here in Leesburg, VA. It’s our anniversary weekend and my husband is a history buff and I’m crazy about anything for my house that is unique and pretty, so no better place for us to be this weekend. Touring DC for a few days and then Lucketts spring fair! Can’t wait to meet you!!!
Jena
I am a newbie to your realm and admire your work so much! I’m getting ready to order my first batch of MMS Milk Paint and try it out. Can’t wait!
Your humililty is admirable but you really do have such great talent, and I hope to meet you, pick your brain, and marvel at your work in person… some day. REALLY wish I could make it to Lucketts, but cannot this time as I cannot get away from southwestern Indiana this month..
Wishing you a successful and joyful time at market!
I am traveling from Brentwood, Tn. to Leesburg, Va….645 miles. I”m so excited to see Luckett’s, attend the sale, and meet you, Marian. I’ve stopped in Rockville to see my son/DIL, and g/son who are in missionary training at the International Learning Center. See you Saturday.

Does coming from Europe count ? 🙂 I wish ! Love your stuff and would buy the channel back chair in a heartbeat! Best of luck and here´s sending sunny wishes your way for a great weekend from Portugal
Hi Marian,
You have been working hard! You really inspire me to get working on my projects at home. You are living proof that IT CAN BE DONE! Way to go! The best of luck to you at the market. I have a friend who lived in Virginia that is down the road from me and she has been to Lucketts before. Someday I am coming to Lucketts!
Thank you for who you are and the good work you do! Like you said it all begins with a seed of faith.
Sadie from Idaho
I love the blue piece with flowers! Is it a dresser? Wish I could them all in person!
I love posts like this! I’m nodding and smiling and saying oh, yeah, uh-huh, while I’m reading! 😉
First, I know exactly which coral knobs you are talking about, since I was just on their website yesterday looking for knobs!! Those will be so pretty on that dresser. I love the instant feedback on furniture thanks to social media!! I always feel like when I post stuff on IG before a show, or bringing it to the shop is an indicator of how fast it will sell.
Second, I feel weird saying this, but I love that I finally got to see if you paint the back of your furniture! I have had discussions about whether or not to do this with other vendors, and I always wondered if MMS see does or doesn’t! LOL Photo lurky, I know.
Last, your signs are amazing. Love the shadowing you did on that gray French sign. So subtle, and so well done. I am desperate to do some more, but my printer that I use for fancy fonts is broken. 🙁
Good luck at your sale, not that you need it. Looks incredible.
Wonderful job on the settee. Love the free hand painted dresser! Looking forward to following your trip to Va!
Wish I could be there this year 🙁 I’m so sad I will miss it!
The settee and chair are great! I love the fabric you chose for them!
OMG! Now I know what my chair is called! I have a channel back chair that I need to have upholstered, but I didn’t know what it was called. How hard was it to do the upholstery yourself on that chair?
I don’t know how I missed this! Daniel told me about this post…I had to see his “mug!” He is a mess! Glad he was able to help out with the boys…hope you didn’t come home to too big of a mess! Also, glad to hear that you had a successful weekend!! You’re an inspiration!!!
Uncle Deuce is the new favorite sitter and he did a great job. Thanks for letting him help out on our big weekend.
Marion, I love your stool. Blue and white has been my favorite forever. I would love to be chosen for the entry with Pine Cone Hill. That would be fantastic.
Yolanda
It is probably a little late for comments here, but could you point me to the original post of your mom’s favorite dresser? that is also my favorite dresser!
Me too, I love it!!
