Oh, The Joy

I am over the moon this afternoon because my husband was able to install the half canopy I made for our bed.  I have wanted one of these for years and have never had the guts to put that much fabric into one project.  I’m not sure why…but at long last, here it is.  French country is my thing and the toile fabric and the style of the canopy really emphasize that without being over the top.
Don’t mind the pillows.  I just wrapped some extra fabric around them for the picture, so there’s still a lot of sewing ahead of me.
The fabric makes the bed feel so cozy and gives the room a clear focal point.  I hope to find a queen bed frame that I’m in love with at some point that will look perfect nestled under this.  I have also added a high boy or wardrobe style dresser and a pair of night stands on my hunting list.
This is the wall the bed is up against.  We decided to cover up this door that leads to my office.  It’s not necessary and makes arranging furniture a challenge in both rooms.  So, why not get rid of it?  The door is still behind the curtain, so we can easily change things back if we ever want to or we sell the house.   I had originally planned on having my hubby build a headboard that would hide it, but after further thought, I was afraid it would look too bulky and overwhelming.
I still need to do some smoothing and adjusting, but I just couldn’t wait to share it with you.  If you’d like to make one of your own, check out the full tutorial here.

  1. Love, love, love it…I did this a few years ago at our old house. I loved it!!! It really makes a great focal point!! Great job!!!

  2. Gorgeous! I'm drooling over everyone's bedrooms right now since I too am working on mine. I did quite a bit of sewing this weekend too for my room.

You take such great pictures. Any tips to pass along?

  3. Looks absolutely gorgeous! Can't wait to see the rest!

Worked on my German sack feeder today and just wasn't happy with it – I'm going to do another this week! I'll keep you posted!

  4. Ack! I love it! You did such a good job {hubby, too}. How great that you were able to do this AND cover up the door at the same time without actually doing any construction. I hope you'll have a tutorial on this at some point ~ I'd love to try something like this, even if it's only in my little spare room.

  5. I think you were right to do the canopy instead of a headboard, too! It looks amazing! No one would ever know that there is a door back there….well except all of us, but only because you showed us! : ) It's genius!

  6. I love it! Very well done….great way to cover a door that's not in use. We have a random door in our bedroom that leads to the backyard that we never used – we covered it with a curtain to match the one little window we already had!

  7. No wonder you are over the moon! You SHOULD be button-popping proud. This bed treatment is so beautiful and elegant and sooooo very french! Your choice of fabric is traditional, yet the mix is very fresh. Wonderful job. I would love to see just how you did it.
    Kudos to you!!!!

  8. The canopy is a great idea. I love the fact that you didn't demo the door; but instead thought of a way to live with it while NOT living with it.

    such a great idea.
    And very pretty too!

  9. Fabulous darling!! Great job! And what a perfect way to camouflage that doorway!!! I love it! And the colors are delicious!

  10. LOVE it! And inspired by your boldness to not be 'boxed in' to the fact that there's a door there…just cover it up! Great idea. You did a beautiful job!

  11. This looks like it turned out really well. What on earth is that printed(?) fabric bit draped over the very front pillow and where did you find it? I LOVE it!

  12. Wow, this turned out great. This look like a lot of work to me 🙂 But it looks well worth it, I never thougth about covering a door to rearrange for a headboard.

Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.
