Before I start, the winners of a $50 shop credit to Copper & Tin are Betsy C and Melissa Boyce. Enjoy shopping!
I’m constantly asked about introducing new milk paint colors (and I’m working on that…slowly), but I wanted to explain a bit further why I chose the twelve colors of the original line. First off, these are colors I love and use in my decorating. I also wanted the colors to be very saturated, so they would be perfect for mixing either to lighten or to create new colors altogether. I know mixing colors doesn’t come naturally for everyone. It does involve some knowledge of color theory and some trial and error.
Well, one of my clever retailers, The Purple Paint Lady, has developed a virtual color mixing tool to help remove some of that guess work!
With this tool, you can select any two or three paint colors in the line and mix them in different ratios to see what the end result would be. Here are some mixes I came up with while playing with the tool…
Fun, right? And addictive!
I love that this tool will allow you to play around with color without buying a bunch of different paint colors and mixing for hours. Obviously, the color isn’t 100% accurate, since monitor colors vary, etc., but it at least gives you a good place to start.
Thanks so much to Steve and Tricia for developing this. (Have I mentioned they’re clever?)
Today was another day of HGTV.com projects and I feel like the finish line is in sight. Over the last week I finished butcher block counters, made angel wings, a bomber jacket, tutu’s, a witch’s broom and more. I still have quite a few boxes to check off my list, but I’m making great progress. I managed to get two ruched shams and the tutorial for them made today, despite having a (sort of) sick kid at home. I’m definitely not the greatest seamstress, but I was pretty impressed at what could be made with some simple white cotton fabric and a sewing machine. I’ll share pictures tomorrow.
Lastly, I wanted to share a giveaway that’s being hosted at The Junk Bonanza and Flea Market Style blogs. They are giving away 2 VIP tickets to the Spring Junk Bonanza, a copy of the spring/summer issue of Flea Market Style and a little shopping money to spend at Ki Nassauer’s store at the Bonanza. Don’t enter here, but click the links to visit. Good luck! I wish I could go…

That is a super cool tool – amazing! Now, if only I could get my hands on some of you paints and play away!
Thank you so much for the credit to Copper and Tin. I’m so excited to start shopping!!
How awesome!?! I know what I’m going to be doing when I’m procrastinating on folding all our laundry! It now gives a whole new meaning to creative avoidance, huh? 😉 Jesse @ Scout & Nimble
That is SO cool! I’m definitely going to have to give it a try!
Marion,
I am redoing a side table with barley twist legs. I just lightly sanded it and applied a darker stain. I wanted a really dark finish. I’m thinking of leaving the top of the table the natural stain but painting the legs with your milk paint. What I’m wondering is if I should wax over the stain before applying the paint, or apply a varnish topcoat first, or neither. I’m wanting the chippy look so I didn’t know which would work better.
Thanks so much.
So nice! I have a couple samples of your milk paint that I just ordered. I haven’t had a chance to try them yet but can’t wait!
I LOVE to mix colors … what a cool tool for mixing they came up with!
I love that tool! x
This looks like a great tool! I have played with mixing different hues for my furniture and had lots of fun. But, I had a problem with the grain sack milk paint… mine was hardly gray at all. I wondered if it was mislabeled? But… with mixing a little typewriter in I was able to get the color I wanted. Happy painting to everyone!
What a fun and useful tool!
I am only a couple of weeks away from my interstate move, and was planning to paint and stencil my bedroom dressers once we get them to our new home. Now, I can mix colors for the stenciled design with confidence.
Wow, what a cool idea! I have to locate some of your paint in Canada! Congratulations 😉 You’re one talented lady!

I’m so glad to see this on your site…I had gone to my (somewhat) local MMS supplier, and asked about mixing your milk paint colors to make my own (love your colors but we have different colors in our home)…she told me it couldn’t be done. I left w/o buying any milk paint at all, when I had been so excited that someplace fairly nearby was now stocking your product. Boo! I’m heading back over there this week, and grabbing some milk paint for sure, yay!
Brilliant! This will be very helpful. Thanks! — Pauline
I love this tool! I was freaking out when my retailer actually had Kitchen Scale in stock. I had to do a little mini project with it last night.
I <3 MMSMP!
This is a great tool! I cannot wait to use the paints on some projects I have on hold until I move. Your blog is FANTASTIC. I really appreciate your expertise in so many areas and your beautiful design sense in amazing. Many thanks. 🙂
