I put some more time into the kitchen yesterday, but my “honorary moms” who worry about me doing to much, will be happy to know that I took a bit of a break today. I did still get some things done, like editing photos and proofreading articles, but nothing major.
Yesterday, we got most of the range hood completed. I will say that it gives one a moment of pause when sunlight is pouring into your kitchen from a hole in your roof.
There were some tense moments, some screws accidentally dropped down the pipe, a mid-project trip to the hardware store and quite a lot of shingle, wood and drywall dust that needed to be vacuumed up, but everything worked out in the end. We just need to install the pretty part – the front panel and finish painting. It already looks pretty great without the pretty part.
It’s so rewarding to see it all coming together. I do have a lot of little things I need to finish like the trim on the tile, some touch-up painting…
…baseboards in the family room…
…stuff like that. I’m also mulling over some decorating choices like painting the bar stools. It’s amazing that something has stayed unpainted in my house for 6 years, but these guys have made it that long! With the wood floors and the wood counters, I think some painted stools are in order.
I’ve also been taking the time to reorganize the drawers and cabinets. It’s long overdue and it’s the kind of thing that makes me happy. I don’t know why opening an organized drawer makes me happy, but it just does.
I’m also enjoying how pretty my things look in the kitchen now. I’ve always avoided shooting photos in the addition of the home, but I think you’ll see if a lot more now.
We hope to finish the range hood tomorrow and I’ll start knocking out some of those detail things to get the kitchen all ready to be photographed and shared.
While writing this post, I have decided something. Just about anything looks good in front of white herringbone marble. Just sayin’.
I think going back after a renovation and playing/fluffing/moving things is so much fun!
Paint the stools…Go Green!! You’ve got a beautiful combination of textures and subtle colors going on…love the combo of tile, wood, paint, chalkboard, boxwood-beautiful!
I love your tile back splash! I would have to agree that anything would look good in front of that. 🙂 I can so relate to your (not) painted stools! My husband always jokes that if it stays too still in our house, it will get painted! 😉 He is so very right!!
So yes, I think painting the stools is in order!

Paint the stools! I saw them and thought “Now where did those come from? And why are they unpainted wood?” It just hit me funny. You are SO TALENTED!!! I may have mentioned that before…. happy, happy, happy for you and to look at such a pretty space!
I am in LOVE with the gorgeous butcher block counters!! I am actually in the process of a new backsplash and counter top update in my kitchen. I am wondering why you did the backsplash before the counter top install? I am actually going with a butcher block counter as well, and want to see if it matters which I install first. I sooooo enjoy your blog!

Use mineral oil. It is usually in the pharmacy section of stores. I use it at least once a month.
I’ve been “spring cleaning” my drawers and cabinets, too. We have some shops around now called Finder’s Keepers (are they out near you?) They resell furniture and household goods…kind of like an easier Craig’s List. I’ve been taking some of my unnecessary stuff in there and it’s great to get some $ for it. I’ve bought some fun things in them, too. Found one of those big old trophies like you have for $8. Was that a decent price? I live near York, PA, so you may find them fun to visit if you get by here.
Marian, it all came together beautifully. The color of the counter looks great in the third picture. So warm. I agree with green for the wooden bar stools.

I love everything so far, but there is one thing that bothers me and that is the potrack! It just messes up the whole flow of your beautiful room. Of course that is my opinion and I would never have one, thank goodness we can all do what we want to do. I can’t wait for your tutorials.
the tile is a great back drop for photos ;). I think you should pick a color from that fab kitchen rug and paint those stools that color. I started my spring cleaning yesterday I am soooo embarrassed at how unorganized and filthy our house is. But is was theraputic to get started did my counters, wood stove, and floors so far. My garden is a wreak but the wind has to settle down before I start on that. I can hardly wait for the range hood to get done and the beauty shots ;).
Can you give a tutorial on the range hood???? Or will it be featured elsewhere?
I love how things are coming along in your kitchen! Especially since I picked that very tile for our SC home…always nice to see examples ahead of making such a major move. And, anxious to see your hood design and see if it ‘s like the one I designed for ours. I always enjoy your work and everything you share.

Don’t you just love the look of those new marble tiles, the frosty looking geometric ones? I’d do all my bathrooms in that frosty marble if I had the chance. It looks classic. My grandfather’s 1890 Victorian had a marble bathroom sink top like that.

Beautiful kitchen, I am so in LOVE with your butcher block counters! I like the wood stools with the wood counters against all the lighter colors. But I do see that the stools are on the wood floor not on the white tile floor… so I agree, paint the stools!! I can’t wait to see the finished hood, and more pics of your gorgeous kitchen!

You sure have come a long way since you started all the redo’s in your home. Must feel pretty good. You must have a boat load of energy to keep up all the work you have to do, ah to be young. I laughed out loud at the 6 years of unpainted bar stools! That is so true and so funny. I can’t believe you haven’t painted them. The sunlight pouring into your room must have been pretty AND scary. I know it will all turn out beautiful.
I have a huge counter with 4 wood, not painted , counter height bar stools, when we have company I can pull in two painted bar stools, that we use a couple times a month. The painted ones were painted by a professional, autobody shop, cause I wanted them to last….not so, I find myself, touching them up a couple times a year, no biggie, but they are a disappointment and always look, chipped and not in a stylish way. I am thinking about ordering some Tabourte stools from overstock….they are so sweet, or some Limeade metal counter stools, great price and the the pop of color..I would love…I like a bit of wood here and there, but that is me. Love your ideas,

I want to share that you may want to be careful placing untreated metal items on the butcher block. I had a butcher block island. My old kitchen scale left a black stain the shape of its base…a metal tray left a stain. I did not use your butcher block finish so…? Try spraying the metal with clear mat acrylic. It does not show on the metal and hopefully would stop the reaction that could stain you counter.
Everything does look better against marble.
in pic #5 (the pic with the single barstool and antlers hung on the wall), what is that chippy looking rectangle that can be seen through the chairs (on the wall by the antlers)? Is it a cab door? Looks interesting.

I think your stools would look great either a dark mustard yellow or a dark turquoise peacock blue. Either color would look great with the back splash, the yellow would compliment and the blue would be a fun contrast!
