fun finds & help wanted

I don’t know about you, but the whole “sping forward” thing messes me up for a week each year.  This morning I could hardly keep my eyes open as I made lunches for the boys.  Jeff took them to school and I crawled back in bed.  By the time I dozed, did my workout, showered and ate breakfast, half of the day was gone!  I still managed to get a lot done, but I’ve got to get back on a normal schedule.

Anyway, as I shared over the weekend, my mom and I went out shopping on Friday, so I thought I would share some of the things I bought.

I loved the patina on this handmade wood box inscribed 1865…

…and it even came with the key!

The crackled finish is so cool.

I also picked up a couple of cameras…

…some cow bells…

…a pretty ironstone tureen…

…an ironstone brush box…

…and a really interesting ironstone pitcher.  It has a pretty shape, but it also has two metal pieces on either side of the handle that go through the ironstone.

Any ideas what that is about?  Clearly it was made that way, for any metal inserted through the ironstone would’ve broken it.

I bought a few things for me, too.  This sugar jar with amazing details…

…A beautiful set of small forks and knives that are gold with blue handles.  The set was really cheap and I thought they would look amazing in photo shoots.

…and a brush…

…and this amazing ice water crock.  It’s huge and I couldn’t believe how inexpensive it was.  Usually crocks like these are in the hundreds, but this one was only $48.00.  I think it would look awesome filled with ice and chilled drinks.

For now, I’m using it as a trashcan by my desk.  Don’t mind the cords, unfinished trim and the dust.

I’ll be tagging and packing some more things tomorrow and I’ll take some more pictures.  I will be listing some items in the online shop, but most of these are going in the stash for Lucketts.  It’s not until May, but I feel like it’s creeping up on me nonetheless.

Speaking of, I really think I need to hire some help to get ready for Lucketts this year.  I’m looking for someone to help me with stripping upholstery off of furniture, prepping pieces to paint, pricing and packing pieces, etc.  It would be a part-time position, most likely just until the third week of May, but it could turn into more.  Sewing experience would be great, but not necessary.  I really just need a go-getter who can dive in and help get things done.  Obviously, you have to be willing to drive to Gettysburg, PA for the job.  The hours would be pretty flexible.  If you’re interested, send me an e-mail (marian@missmustardseed.com) and we’ll go from there.

*** Update – the position has been filled! ***

  1. You find such awesome treasures! I live in southwest Missouri. Ironstone is scarce here, but I find pieces here and there. Love the large water cooler! Good luck with your search for help… if only I were closer! LOL

  2. I would love to go shopping with you! Let me know if you need someone to help carry your finds! I’d even meet you half way from Leesburg! :0)

  3. You always find the greatest treasures! I wish we could find that stuff here, maybe I’ll have to drive cross country! Sure wish I lived closer, I would love to help.

  4. Gosh, I sure love to see the things you find when you go antiques shopping. So different than what I find where I am. Wish I knew the answer to the metal pieces on that pitcher. I, too, wish I lived where I could help out. Hope you find someone perfect for the job.

  5. Such great finds…but you always have such luck with that! I love the blue silverware the best! So unique.

  6. My guess is that the ironstone pitcher is a syrup pitcher that used to have a metal lid attached to it. Another great find. 🙂

  7. I too think thats the pitcher is a syrup pitcher because of the metal and the long elegant shape. Good luck with the prep for Lucketts.

  8. Love Love Love the blue handled silverware, Have had a love affair with all things blue for most of my life,

  9. i love it all, but for some reason the cow bells are especially sweet. And the blue handled silverware is beautiful~gorgeous color!

  10. Yes the ‘spring forward” also messes me up every year. It takes me longer to get into the swing of things. Although I do enjoy the longer days. I love all of your finds especially the box. I don’t know what it is but I have a thing for old boxes. I sent you an email.

  11. I agree with the others on the pitcher. I think the metal pieces held a lid. Love all your finds!! Good luck finding a helper!!

  12. Oh how I wish I could work for you. What an opportunity. I’m sure you are going to find someone camped out on your step for the job! Love the blue set. Have a wonderful day

  13. Am I the only one who is itching to paint that wooden box? I know it would probably be ‘wrong’ and obviously you are not going to paint it since it’s already tagged, but every time I see something like that all I can think about is how fabulous it would be with a chippy Luckett’s Green paint job 😉

  14. Would like any volunteer help at Lucketts? We live in leesburg! My husband may be willing to help out too! I’d be happy to help unload, set up, however you may need help!

  15. Hi Marian,

The ironstone pitcher is a syrup pitcher. It would have had a silver or pewter lid with a hinge that pivoted on a metal bar that would’ve gone through though those holes. Even though its missing the lid, its still a gorgeous and unique piece!

  16. I have a pitcher with those same holes and I have always wondered how they got there – now I know – syrup pitcher! How cool!

    1. Whoa, what a great bunch of stuff you found! I had to read the comments to see if anyone knew what the holes in the pitcher were for, and I think Laura must be right! Cool… and i Love the cowbells! I’m so gonna have to paint a cow with a big bell around it’s neck…

  17. Ha! I grew up down the road from Flemington, NJ. They do/did make lots of pottery there.

  18. Brush Box ? with a wheat design on lid? I don’t know but I’m thinking it’s for roll or crackers but you would know best. Interesting how 1hr of time can make a big difference and change our pattern. I’m still in la la land.

    1. Yes, that’s actually what that shape of ironstone box is called. The wheat design is just a popular ironstone pattern, not a reference to its use.

  19. I love your finds! I love all things rusty, junky, and chippy! My husband and I frequent local auctions, and occasional thrift and antique stores. I live in Northcentral Louisiana, and we too have lots of salt-glazed pottery from Marshall, TX that is everywhere. The one item that I drool over in all of your finds are the white ironstone. We don’t have too much of that in my neck of the woods, but when I find a piece I snatch it up. I only wish I lived closer and could have been the one to help you. Wow, I would quit my day job to work for you on your fantastic projects!

  20. Cool finds! I know how you feel about Spring forward. Atleast you get to back to bed! I have to get up at 6:15 to get my kids off to school which does not agree with me in the first place. This week my body has been arguing with me that it is really 5:15 when I crawl out of bed and I am so not ready to get up. I have been tired most of the week.

  21. Perfect finds! And, so jealous you get to shop with your Mother – Enjoy that!! Also, sorry I don’t live closer – I could use the work!! Love the items!

  22. In a heartbeat I’d be there to work! One huge glitch….I live about 1800 miles away! 🙁

I know you’ll get the help you’ll need. Wish it was me 🙁

Love the gold and blue silverware. It WILL look fabulous with your grain sacks/vintage linens, mixed with crisp whites and maybe a piece of furniture in Flow Blue or Apron Strings somewhere in there. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

As far as the time change thing goes…I’m right there with you! Next week will be easier for us, I’m sure. 🙂

  23. Marian, I say I crawl forward! Springing doesn’t happen but I love DST. This year I prepared for it by getting up an hour earlier each day the week before. Has really helped.

  24. Wish I lived closer, I would be your “girl Friday”! I am in South Carolina. Wish you would sell some of these good finds in your shop, I will never be able to make it to Lucketts, to far away.

  25. Oh my goodness!!! If I lived closer, I would just love to help you out with all that fun stuff. However, I live far away. Will you be listing anymore boxwood wreaths in your online shop? I would like to buy a few of those. They were all sold out by the time I looked.

  26. I am so jealous that you found the 3 pronged forks!! I have what’s left of a set from my wedding 34 years ago and haven’t found any decent ones since. When I do find them, the tines are so wide on the end the only thing you could stab would be jello:-) When they’ve outworn their use as photo props you know where to find a buyer!!
So LOVE your site (and your paint :-))

  27. Where do you and your mom target for shopping? Antique stores? Estate sales? Simple flea markets? I’m always amazed with the treasures you find. I think you have more patience than I. I don’t know where to begin.

  28. Love all the ironstone. I wish I could find it as easily as you do. I agree about the pitcher, it must have had a pewter or silver lid attached to the top. Still a lovely pitcher without the lid.
