the fate of the guest bed

I knew this day would come, but I didn’t think it would be so soon.

We’ve always had a full-sized bed in our guest room and it’s always worked just fine, but we’ve had it in the back of our minds for a while that we wanted to upgrade it to a queen.  I’ll share more on it in a few weeks, but we now have the opportunity to upgrade to a queen, so we’re doing it.  I’m so happy for our guests, especially Jeff’s parents, but my excitement is tempered by the fact that my hand painted bed frame, that I’ve only enjoyed for a couple of months, isn’t going to work anymore.

Sniff.  I know.

So, I will be selling the bed frame along with with the mattress and box spring.

You can read the details on how I painted the bed HERE.

I’m selling the frame, side rails, slats, box spring and mattress all for $350.00.  The mattress set was purchased about 12 years ago, but has always been used in a guest room with a cover on it, so it’s had very light use and is in great condition.  There isn’t any sagging or anything.  It comes from a smoke-free home, pet-free home.  The bed frame is an antique, made of wood.  There are a few places on the footboard where the trim is broken and the veneer is chipped.  The imperfections are cosmetic, so the frame is sturdy and useable and I think they only add to the charm of the piece.

Just send me an e-mail if you’re interested in purchasing the bed.  marian@missmustardseed.com  I’d like to sell it for local pick up only at this point (south central, PA).

So, what is going in its place?  Well, that’s for another post…

  1. I wish I were closer! I have the perfect spot for that bed. 🙂 But I live in south west Missouri… just a little too far to drive… said my husband when I asked! LOL

  2. I don’t know Marian…..this is breaking my heart to see you sell this wonderful bed. How about keeping it for your new house and the extra extra bedroom it may have?

  3. That bed is so beautiful! I have loved it from afar. I think it is underpriced — $1000 does not seem unreasonable to me!!

  4. Wow! Someone is going to get a great price on an MMM original! I feel your pain, but agree that queen is a good choice, when available. Can’t wait to see that reveal. 🙂

  5. Oh if I lived close by!!! I agree with Ann….you have it underpriced…my goodness think of all the artistic talent and work you put into that bed Marian!

  6. Would you be willing to ship just the bed frame via greyhound shipping? Let me know.

    Kim

  7. Oh my Marian, someone will be getting a heck of a bargain and beautiful piece. I think you way under priced this gorgeous piece for all the painting done to it. I have a bed very similar in style (curved bed). Just love them!

I know there is one happy person out there getting a beautiful bed!

  8. Oh my. Do not sell this bed. Store it in your basement, or parent’s home, or something. This piece is so great; I agree with Karen – keepsake! But if you absolutely must, $350 is way too low.

  9. You’ve way underpriced all your beautiful work. I’d pay at least $1000 for that bed!

  10. Selling the bed is so “MMS”! First you are giving someone a chance to buy it at a bargain price. And then you will get to show us how you work your magic on the queen size bed replacement. I like the fact that you are always changing things. I do regret that I live so far away that I can’t buy it!

  11. I just purchased two matching twin beds in the same style and can’t wait to get to work on them. You piece has certainly inspired me!

  12. Oh dear! Marian, you are running a business! The price is way too low. You are not valuing the piece and your workmanship and your labor – it IS hand painted!! Even cheap crappy furniture in low end stores cost more.
I would get rid of the mattress/box spring even it has been used very little. It is 12 years old and no matter what it has accumulated the minute critters that live in mattresses – yuck! Just my opinion, I would never buy or sell a used mattress.
So that leaves the headboard/footboard – at minimum it should be double your asking price.
Can’t wait to see the queen….

  13. Marian I have that same bed for my little girls room and we made it fit a queen!! It took my husband and I a whole lot of engineering and finally bought the full to queen converter rails, used that and it worked! We took out the wooden bars at the end of the footboard but stored them away since it was part of the original bed. I have 4 of these beds right now in my garage if you decide you want it back lol you’d just have to paint it again!! I kept coming across them so I started bed hoarding til I found the perfect one for my 3 year olds “big girl” bed! I will have to send you a picture!!

    1. If you do not mind my asking how did you do your full to queen conversion? We have a wonderful old iron full size bed that we are contemplating converting if humanly possible. For now we use it as is and it works for the two of us. 🙂 Thanks, I appreciate any information you can pass along!!

      1. I bought a full to queen converter bed frame (there are several brands available!!) and you can get the kind with the hooks or bolt on, depending on the type of bed it is, iron or wood. Hope that helps!!

  14. Well you are in the business of painting and selling furniture after all, and change is good ; ) I look forward to seeing the bed from your in-laws, and wonder if it may be a special family piece that you are being gifted. That would be hard to resist. Some lucky person will benefit from your ability to let go. Love your red check drapes in this room!

  15. I agree with everyone who says keep it! You haven’t bought your new house yet–what if you end up with the perfect place for it? I also agree with those who say you have underpriced it. Unless you’re so fast that you can work the kind of marvels you do in a few hours, you are getting too low a return on your labor–not to mention the artistry you put into it.

  16. Oh, Marian, how I would love to have that bed, but being in Georgia, would make it impossible for me to purchase. I have loved that piece since the first day you showcased it on your blog. It has French Country written all over it. Lucky person who is able to purchase it locally. I agree with everyone else, about keeping for your new home. Who knows, you may just have the perfect spot for it.

  17. Marian- I love that bed. I, too, almost choked at the low price. It is so unique and beautifully done. But, I guess you want to move it! I wish I had a house big enough for it- but I have twin beds in my guest room and though not ideal, it works for most people. I do live close enough and the price is so great. I just don’t have the room. We downsized and that’s one of the bad things about getting older and needing less! But, that doesn’t make us want less, does it? Not all the time…especially when a piece of art like your bed comes along…you’ll sell it in no time. 🙂

  18. I agree with Karen Keller-Eyer: you should KEEP THE BED for your new house and the extra room it may have. This bed is SO you! Plus, you spent so much time painting it. Just sell the mattress set and keep the bed itself.

  19. OMG! Your bedframe is GORGEOUS!!! I wish I lived closer so I could come & buy it. I totally agree with everyone else that its worth MUCH more than $350. The paint detail is exquisite.

  20. After reading everyone’s posts before me and you still decide to sell it, what an amazing deal!!

  21. Hi:

I so love the bed, but I live to price. I agree on the price, too low. I was wondering if Ms. Rhodes
could explain how to convert the full into a queen. I have an antique brass full bed that we want
to convert to queen for a brand new mattress we bought. Thanks, and keep changing things is
so much fun to see something new in your house everyday.

    Martha

  22. DO NOT SELL IT, Marian!!!!! It is way too special to part with. Seriously, for a guest bedroom, full is big enough! You will regret if you sell it. Your new house will probably have a room that you will be able to use it in. It’s not one of those pieces that you can make again or will find again. It comes apart, so storing it would not require that much space. KEEP IT!!!!

  23. Goodness gracious…I so want to buy your masterpiece and I am willing to pay more. We live in Wisconsin but my son and daughter-in-law live in Virginia which isn’t that far as the “crow flies” so I know they could pick it up for our guest room in our 100 year old house that is crying out for your bed and your bed only! I’ll be in touch but I already might be too late from the many posts before mine…lucky the person who might already own it. For shame as I have never, ever loved a piece of furniture as much as this 🙂 In the meantime, Nancy will dream on for yet another! Thanks Marian for sharing this opportunity of a lifetime.

  24. I am interested in buying the bed if you can’t find someone local. I am only 1 state over.

  25. I give your much credit! I paint an end table or chair and sometimes I can’t bring myself to sell them, and you can sell this magnificent bed. Do keep it for your new home if you could see the “stuff” we store you would laugh.

  26. Marian,
I want to purchase the bed and will pay to have it shipped to New Mexico. Please contact me at the referenced email.
    Thank you,
    Rhaneve email.

  27. I am extremely interested in the fate of this bed. I have had one almost identical for a few years now and could not decide what to paint on it, or what colors to paint it. I had never seen one like it ever, until I saw yours when the post wwas a few weeks old. I would have missed the lovely work you had done.
I love your colours and also think it is way underpriced. My style is a tad more on the French country theme, but I don’t want it too frilly and overdone. So if you had alternate ideas for yours I would love to hear about that. I am good at florals, but like I said, I think that would be too frilly. I even thought of upholstering parts of it. I am not planning on selling it ever, I just loved the lines and the curved footboard. I also have a dresser to match, but I am not fond of the original mirror. And you’ll love this, I paid 800. For both still needing finishing, and thought it was well worth it! Lol. So keep me posted on it’s journey……… Love your blog!

  28. I think this means you know where you are moving to next? Yes, the price is too low but someone is going to be blessed by your generosity for years to come. If I was closer then Colorado I would be buying it now!

  29. Yes, I think the price is way too low too.
Surely, there has to be a way to make a queen size frame adapted to a full size bed.
Think!!! I sure would hate for you to have to sell this treasure.

  30. The bed is wonderful. I think it will sell at this price. I have 3 antique beds and the full size is very hard to sell. I just shipped a wonderful shabby chic hutch I found on Long Island and shipped it to Seattle from a freight service I found on line. It was very reasonable. The buyer could consider this

  31. Marian,

Your bed is beautiful, please rethink before you sell it!!!! A few years ago, I was lucky and found a converter frame for changing a double bed into a queen size bed. I had a beautiful full size bed which was a Victorian Sampler by Lexington Furniture co. in my sons bedroom. I found the converter frame at a furniture store and at the time it cost about $80. It connects to the headboard and footboard and the side rails extend out enough to accommodate a queen mattress.
The only things that I lost in the process were the wood side rails, which I stored under the bed.
I agree with all the other comments, your bed is too beautiful to part with. I hope this information helps you. LOL Shirley

  32. I am so sorry that you have to get rid of a piece that has such fond memories for you, and I hope that the person who buys it has as much love for it as you so clearly do. 🙂

  33. OK, our Nuts! Keep the Bed! you are moving!!!!! and will need it!!! Store it! I promise you,you will not regret keeping this.

However, if you want to sell your Side board & ship it to NY…I’ll take it.

What ever you decide…were on your side!
    Roseann

  34. Marion, I love the bed and I think it dates from the 1920’s because my parents had a very similar bed on their third floor suite and I remember my mother saying that it was their very
first bed after they got married in 1926. The very lucky person who gets and loves this bed.

  35. Hello, Marian,
I would like to purchase this beautiful bed if you would be willing to ship via fedex to Colorado. I have just purchased a beautiful old Victorian and I have the perfect spot for it.
    Please let me know.
    Thank you kindly,
    Linda

  36. I live across the country from you! Your bed is a piece of art and I hope whoever the lucky person is who purchases it will treat it like a treasure. You sound like you are handling it quite well…I would be sobbing. I know your extraordinary talent Marian and if this bed can be this gorgeous, I can only imagine what you might come up with next. Happy selling!

  37. Dear MMS, Your beautiful bed is quite popular! Of course! I’m sure it will find a good home. Thanks for your lovely blog. Hugs, Anne Boykin

  38. Marian, that bed is to die for. Wish you lived closer. It looks as if you have a buyer.

  39. You are sooooo creative, isn’t there ANY WAY you could still make the bed frame work? It would be so sad to see it go:(

  40. btw: Did you not know that you CAN use a QUEEN mattress on your full size bed frame? In 1969
when we were furnishing several rooms at once with a move we purchased what they called extensions for the full size bed frame. 20 years later when replacing the bedroom furniture I had FORGOTTEN …keep in mind the small difference in size between the full and queen size. Do the math. Your problem could be solved -comfort for your guests and you get to keep your BEAUTIFUL BED.

  41. I don’t think it would work on this bed, because of the curved footboard. It actually curves around the base of the mattress.

  42. That bed is kind of famous now. I would have offered it free to the new homeowners to help me sell my house. My friend once bought a house because the owners said the dining room set came with the house.
