When it came to decorating for Christmas this year, I was, of course, most excited about decorating the kitchen. If you missed it, we renovated our 1970 kitchen this year and completely transformed a chopped-up, dated space into an Edwardian-inspired modern classic kitchen. You can catch up on the details of the renovation HERE. But today, I want to show how I decorated our new kitchen window for the holidays…
First of all, I made a garland swag with two pine garlands and two cedar garlands. I then tucked in some juniper sprigs, homemade orange slices, and dried limes. I also used some velvet ribbon in the center of the swag. Sadly, almost everything is sold out this season, but I imagine most of it will be available again in 2024.
To hang the garland, I tapped in nails in the top of the trim so the holes wouldn’t be visible once the garland and nails are removed. I then attach the garland to the nails using florist wire.
For the sconces, I made little swags with the same mix of faux greens. I bundled them together with florist wire and finished them off with ribbon and brass sleighbells.
The sconces are vintage and I found the old silk shades at an antique store this fall. They were a little dirty, but I figured I didn’t need to be too precious about lampshades that were going in a kitchen. They are very well made and I loved the color and design. I think they were also $3.00/each, so that was pretty hard to walk away from! I likely will end up changing these shades with the season. I can see having a plain white set, some pleated fabric slipcovers to add over the plain shades in a cute fabric, and these.
I typically have a fern next to the window, but I swapped that out for a couple of evergreens and just sort of played with what I had to make a little vignette.
I love how the kitchen window looks all dressed for the Christmas season and into the winter until I’m ready to take it down.
In the dark evenings, I’ve been working on some crochet projects including a couple of different takes on a simple bauble garland. I’m hoping to make the pattern and video tutorial today, so I can post it tomorrow…
Lovely Natural Elegance! How delightful to dress your new window for the Christmas Season.
What a lovely work atmosphere the dressed window makes. I have to ask, however, Are these live greens? They look very natural.
No, they are all artificial!
Just beautiful!
I too have a new kitchen window to decorate with garland but hesitated using nails or command hooks. I saw a hack on Facebook using a tension rod. You attached the garland to the rod and then pop it on the window. It worked great for me. I will admit that my garland is probably lighter than yours. I have a shelf above the window so I don’t have access to the top of the window frame.
Just love your kitchen!!
As always, beautiful and classic Marian! You never fail to inspire me. It is always a joy to come visit your lovely home.
I’m always inspired and uplifted by your posts. Even though my color palette is green, gold, rusty, coral your design principles and techniques work for me! I love your generous and gentle nature and learn from you every post I read. Merry Christmas !
I couldn’t be happier that you are having such a great time decorating your lovely new kitchen. I am remembering when you were going from home to home practically couch surfing with your family. How difficult that must have been…
Now you get the reward! Hope you get to stay in Maryland for as long as you desire…close to your family with many antique and thrift stores nearby to haunt and hunt.
Nothing makes me happier than seeing people get what they deserve.
Love, love, love this! The kitchen looks warm and inviting now!
Very pretty and will be pleasant to enjoy for many weeks. I’m all for decorating for a season rather than a particular holiday so I can enjoy all of my hard work for a longer period of time. It is interesting that I would need four garlands and added greenery picks to achieve this look.
Gorgeous. Everything is falling into place with your new home. I’m sure you and your family are amazed at how far you have come with remodeling your home compared to last year at this time. Your kitchen window looks beautiful framed with the greenery and ribbons.
Just beautiful Marian! I love the sconces and tie in to the garland..it brings the whole outside in~ Blessed everything ~ I’ve had quite a medical setback suddenly and look forward to enjoying your excitement in your new home. Thank you~
Marian, I love everything about your Christmas decor and your willingness to share details and how to’s with us!
Will you kindly share how you drape the various ribbons? They seem to be casually looped and attached somehow, as in the garland on your window. I can’t seem to find the right ‘touch’. Thank you!
Yes, they are looped instead of tied into bows. I just drape them in my hands until I like how they are falling and then I’ll use a piece of florist wire to to “tie” them in place. I’ll also use that to attach them to the garland. I have found this works well, especially with a thicker ribbon like velvet that can get a little wonky when tied.
Thanks so much for your reply. I just love the look your method achieves.
Merry Christmas!
So pretty! I don’t have a window where this would work well, so I’ll enjoy yours vicariously.
