back online & a photo shoot

Boy, I have really missed having internet over the weekend. I had plenty to keep myself busy, but it was such a bummer not being able to post or check my e-mail.  It’s such an outlet for me and it was tough not having it.  Anyway, we got a new router today and we are back online!  Technology is such a blessing!

We’re getting ready to go to Raleigh, NC for Thanksgiving, so I had several things I needed to finish before we leave.  Aside from the usual things…laundry, packing, cleaning a little, etc., I needed to do a project and photo shoot for the February issue of Cottages & Bungalows magazine.  The project was for a bedroom, so I restyled my guest room for the shoot.  It was amazing how different the room looks just by changing out some of the pillows, fabrics and accessories.   Here are some pictures from the shoot…

Those of you who are scared of sewing are going to love the project featured in this issue.

Next Saturday, I am going to hit the flea market and some of my favorite antique shops in Raleigh, NC, so let me know if you’re in that area and would like to come along (or know of a good place.)  I’m meeting up with a few other bloggers/readers and it should be a great time. Send me an e-mail if you’re interested in joining us.

Just know that I will take you down for a well-priced piece of ironstone, so come if you dare.

  1. The guest room looks great, glad you’re back. I have a coverlet just like this that my mother-in-law made for us when we were first married. Cannot imagine the amount of work that goes into these. I’m thinking this is called an Anniversary Coverlet, because of the 52 pieces that are fitted together! Have a great Thanksgiving! xo

  2. Hahaha! Love your last sentence! The green looks great in your guest room by the way. I wish I could join. Maybe I can show you around in Atlanta next year. Or just tag along if you guys go to a few Flea’s:)

  3. Hey Marian… Oh my gosh, you’re going to be so close to me! My friend has a darling little shop in Hillsborough, that’s where i sell my paintings… and she goes to the Raleigh Flea Market all the time!, sometimes i go with her… it’s about 30 minutes away. There is also this place right near the flea market, called Ben’s Bargain Barn… you might want to dig around in there… I wish i had some paintings i could send back with you, but i’m pretty much sold out of most everything right now… I’d love to meet you in person, if all the stars align… and you should check out my friends shop, she has some amazing stuff right now … i’ll ask her about shops and let you know… because she knows all the good ones around here…

    1. I’m glad to hear you’re sold out! That’s a great thing, but I do wish I could take some of your paintings back. Your cow is one of my very favorite things. You are so gifted!

    2. Cindy-I used to live in Hillsborough. Miss it dearly. Is your friend’s shop near the post office in town?

  4. I love all the green in this room! So pretty. As a side note, my husband and I were watching Extreme Makeover: Home Edition last night and my husband turned to me and said, “If we were ever on this show, I’d tell them I want Miss Mustard Seed to come decorate our new home.” Haha right?! But seriously…we totally would tell them that!

  5. The room is gorgeous! I love how you put a ‘dimple’ in the top of your pillows… I never noticed that before 🙂 I’m going around my house right now and giving the tops of my throw pillows a good karate chop to fluff them the way you do!

  6. I no longer live in the area, but my parents do. Loooove the Raleigh flea mkt. This isn’t your typical Miss Mustard type of thing to hunt for, but check the sea salt/spice seller out inside one of the buildings. Her pink himalayan sea salt is an absolute staple for us. My parents are coming up for the holiday and bringing me some because I can’t find one I like equally well from anywhere else.

Beyond that, no specific sellers but that market’s a great one IME. Love the coverlet on the bed.

  7. It’s a little bit of a drive from the Raleigh area but I HIGHLY recommend a trip to Cline’s Antiques in Mount Pleasant, NC. I assure you, no junk lover will be disappointed. (Nor will you come away empty-handed!)

He is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8am to 6pm (though he’ll be closed for Thanksgiving). His “shop” consists of several old barns filled literally to the rafters with piles of old furniture, architectural elements and tons of wonderful old junk. But I warn you – you’ll want to rent a trailer or something to take with you to haul back all your amazing “finds”! 🙂

His website isn’t much but if you wanna check it out, you can find it at http://clinesantiquesmpnc.com/.

Hope you have a safe and happy trip!

  8. I absolutely love the room! I now have “coverlet envy”, that coverlet is absolutely beautiful!!! I am so inspiried by the work you do. Recently I visited a store in North Tacoma and had a lovely conversation with the owner who is also a huge fan of Miss Mustard Seed. It is so much fun to mention your name in a casual conversation and watch the other person’s eyes light up! You are awesome!

  9. Oh what a lucky guest to stay in that lovely room. Just wanted to take a minute to wish you a very happy Thanksgiving!! I do not comment enough – but I do read (and very much look forward to) every post!! Thankful for all your lovely work which inspires me!!

  10. Marian, did someone in your family crochet that beautiful bedspread? It is gorgeous. My grandmother crocheted a bedspread or tablecloth for each of her children, and unfortunately our house burned down when I was a child and my mother lost her bedspread in the fire. I had it on my bed at the time.
    You styled this room beautifully.

    1. Marian’s great grandmother did crochet that bedspread for my Mom – Marian’s grandmother – Marian ended up with and Marian’s great grandmother would love the fact that she treasures it and uses it.

  11. Marian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was junking this weekend and found something to send to you…not brass butterflies but…brass leaves…from the same brass family. My grandma had some butterflies, but when mom packed up the house, she put them into storage. As soon as spring comes along and we can spend some time looking through the boxes, I’ll send them to you as well. If you want, just email me your address and I’ll get you those leaves if you’re interested. I figured you can do something amazing with them.
    P.S. your room is beautiful!

  12. I am in love with that coverlet…just love anything in cream that was handmade…so lovely! 🙂

  13. The room is beautiful! Can’t wait to pick up the magazine when it comes out! You’re last sentence made me laugh. So wish I lived in NC so I could join in the fun. If you ever come to central Ohio, let me know. Would love to meet & shop. Have safe travels and a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  14. Love love loveeee the bedding! Did you make the pillows? And where did you get that awesome blanket? I’m redoing our guest room with green cream and light blue!

  15. What a great look. I’m really inspired by the green with the touches of blue. White and creams are such versatile backgrounds for change. I painted our living room and hobby room/studio white and love them. Next up is our basement guest bedroom. Safe travel to you and yours, and all your readers, this American Thanksgiving weekend.

  16. Ooooooooooooooooh Nooooooooooooooo! The first time in 10 years that I am going away alone with my husband and you are going to be in my town!! I didn’t know that you had connections in Raleigh, but I am going to make sure I make no plans next Thanksgiving weekend so I can stalk you in person! 😉

We went to the Flea Market two weeks ago and there was an abundance of goodies. Some weekends are definitely better than others! Saturday is supposed to be a nice day, so you can shop until you drop! Hopefully your local blogger friends will help you find lots of great places to dig through.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and I will just have to wait to see you at Haven~

  17. Marian, I live in Charlotte, I might be able to make a day trip to Raleigh if you let me know when you are planning. I agree , Cline’s is a great place to be.. Whatever you can think of, it is there, here are several shots from a recent trip there:

If you want to make a trip down here, we would be happy to meet you there as well 🙂 Just need to check if he is open this coming weekend.

  18. Love that room. Would love to know Marian where you came upon your bedspread? My sister has been looking for a really nice chenille bedspread and they are hard to come by, especially for queen size beds. Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy your trip!

    Gorgeous!

  20. I love how your bedroom turned out..Have a great Thanksgivng and enjoy your shopping trip in Raleigh..

  21. Marian, I totally love the room especially the touch of green. If I ever make it up that way to visit I’d like to book that room if possible..Don’t worry I am easy – pb&J and we ‘ll call it good.
I just emailed you about maybe getting together while you are down my way .. Raleigh.

  22. Hi Marian! I wish I could meet you at the flea market but I am going to an NC State game Saturday, it is right next door to the flea market though…maybe I will skip over there and if I spot you I will say hello! Hopefully you will have good luck. I was also going to suggest Ben’s Bargain Barn, it is very close to the flea market and has good furniture finds. If I remember correctly you wrote about going to Suzanne’s Antiques before in Raleigh…I am pretty sure I had a conversation with Suzanne about your blog 🙂 I really like the Thieve’s Market too, its more of a consignment shop but they have good stuff. Have fun! And have a Happy Thanksgiving!

  23. What a pretty room! It’ll look extra pretty in February when we are in FEETS of snow! The green pop of color will make us all swoon for spring real fast!! Happy Thanksgiving! Safe travels with your little ones.

  24. I usually find all kinds of great finds at the Thieves Market in Raleigh. It’s a consignment shop, but they have all kinds of neat things. A lot of accessories in my home have been found there. Happy Shopping!!!

  25. Raleigh!!!! YAY! That’s my hometown! We now live in an old farmhouse out in the country (just outside of Raleigh) I don’t know how long you are staying but I can give you a TON of cool places to check out. I am always hunting down “treasures” for our place.

  26. I love the wood slat wall. Will you please let me know how you did it. LOVE your blog. I’m trying to start one of my own, but have very little time to work on it each day. So it is coming along slowly.

  27. Boo hoo hooo 🙁 We moved from Raleigh to Oregon a little over a year ago and I miss it so much. At least we’ll get to visit for Christmas.

I’ve never heard of all the places that have been mentioned, except for the flea market. I just became interested in vinatage stuff recently though, and that happened through your site. I don’t know how I came across it, but boy am I glad I did 🙂 I hope you have a great time visiting and shopping in my home state.

  28. I just went through your pics on HGTV for the simple Thanksgiving Entry (i think) and i realized how beautiful your photography is. You’re really talented. Thanks for the lovely pictures. I just love your
    blog.

  29. oh my, you are awesome. just plain awesome. i love everything you style. ok, can i just live in your house? i’m sure if we swapped and you lived in mine, you’d have it looking fantastic in no time 🙂
    seriously, you are awesome 🙂

    happy thanksgiving, too.

  30. I live in Raleigh (right off of Wade Avenue). I moved here 3 years ago from Atlanta, to be closer to family, my parents live in Chapel Hill. There are no diamonds in the rough in actual Raleigh. However in Burlington, which is about 40 minutes from Raleigh, there is an amazing antique mall called “Granddaddy’s Antique Mall”. In about an hour or two my mom and me are going to The Mill at Gibsonville, which is basically in Burlington, to pick up our order of chalk paint. We will also be stoping at Granddaddy’s Antique Mall and would LOVE to shop around with you (were only like your biggest fans)!

    1. Maybe you have not been to SuzAnna’s Antiques off of Durant Road in Raleigh? I am the owner, but Miss Mustard Seed loves to shop with us when she is in town! You should head over Miss Hannah!

  32. Hope you have a chance to see us when you are in town!! Two more shops have opened in our Vintage Village and I know you will love them too!! If you can let me know when you will be around!! Happy Thanksgiving!

  33. I’m probably too late to the party, but I’m just now seeing this! You’re in my hometown! Would love to catch up with you if you’re still in the area. We just got floors! (well… for part of the house) Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving! Can’t wait to hear what your new opportunity is about.

  34. i know this post is older now, but i second that mention of suzanna’s/vintage village in raleigh, & there is a similar, smaller place called sweetpea’s garden & antiques in wake forest, about 15 minutes north on capital blvd from raleigh. i’m a raleigh native living in wake forest & love it! lots of cute places here, i rarely drive all the way downtown for the flea market.
